I had the issue of downgrading the NEW out of box 2.3.4.... I was given this link by neidlinger. I had to edit the ending of it to get it to work but it worked, and is working great. Here is the link, and below it is my edit of them.
P.S. MAKE SURE YOU USE THE LINKS TO DOWNLOAD THE PROGRAMS YOU NEED....IF YOU ALREADY HAVE THEM DOWNLOAD THESE AND REPLACE THEM.(JUST TO BE ON THE SAFE SIDE) It wouldn't work for me until I re-downloaded and replaced them.
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/HTC_Glacier:_Full_Update_Guide
Downgrading to 1.17.531.2
If the HTC Glacier is running a Gingerbread firmware (2.xx.xxx.x) (Settings » About Phone) you need to downgrade the device first in order to root. If the HTC Glacier is already running 1.17.531.2 or lower you can skip to the Rooting the HTC Glacier section.
1. You will need ADB on the computer to proceed thru this process. Follow the Android SDK guide, to get the ADB shell on the computer.
2. Download fre3vo, misc_version 0.2 & the 1.17.531.2 firmware:
o fre3vo: Download
md5: 010e076a4a93be876579711bf8934c70
o misc_version 0.2: Download
md5: 1f40aaf88d1bf15775631a58c4361218
o 1.17.531.2 firmware: Download
md5: 49d07f0ee7de1765a6a84cb12fa53110
3. Unzip the fre3vo & misc_version packages to the same folder as adb (the /platform-tools folder within the Android SDK folder).
4. Make sure the filename of the firmware is PD15IMG.zip exactly or it will not work and copy it to the same folder as adb.
5. Connect the HTC Glacier to the computer via USB.
6. On the computer, open terminal and run the following commands:
adb push fre3vo /data/local/tmp
adb push misc_version /data/local/tmp
adb shell
chmod 777 /data/local/tmp/fre3vo
chmod 777 /data/local/tmp/misc_version
/data/local/tmp/fre3vo -debug -start FAA90000 -end FFFFFFFF
adb shell
NOTE: You should have the "#" sign instead of the "$". If you do, you have temporary root, and can continue on. If you have the "$", then the exploit has failed, refer to xda developers, RootzWiki, or #G2Root for further assistance.
/data/local/tmp/misc_version -s 1.00.000.0
exit
7. Now that misc version has been downgraded, the HTC Glacier is ready to have the firmware downgraded. On the computer, open terminal and run the following commands:
adb reboot bootloader
8. Use Volume up/down keys on the HTC Glacier for navigation and Power key for confirmation. Select Bootloader to flash the 1.17.531.2 firmware.
( IT MAY AUTOMATICALLY START )
Once finished you can Root the device by following the instructions on this link…..

I always use the instructions on theunlockr.com actually just did it last week to a vision which is the same process. Make sure u follow directions exactly and don't skip through.

Does anyone know what causes this issue? Or does anyone have an alternative way for gaining temporary root? I spent the evening looking around but haven't found any strong leads.

Here are the directions and files used to fix this problem (do not type any of the "quotation marks"):
1. Download the .zip file from here: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=YUYEMJNM
and put it on the root of your sdcard. (Do not unzip the file). Then rename it to PD15IMG.zip .
2. Download the miscnew file to your computer (uploaded as attachment to this post). Unzip it and place the miscnew.img file that was in the zip onto the root of your sdcard. You can delete the .zip file after you do this.
3. Boot your phone up like normal and connect your phone to your computer.
4. Make sure your sdcard is NOT mounted (but make sure those 2 files were copied to your sdcard).
5. Go into adb and type "adb shell"
6. Then type, "su"
7. Then type, "dd if=/sdcard/miscnew.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p17"
8. Once this is done after about 5 seconds, turn your phone off and unplug from the computer.
9. Once the phone is off, hold down the volume-down key and the power button until you arrive at the bootloader. Once there, the phone should automatically start checking that .zip file you downloaded to the root of your sdcard. After its done checking, it will ask you if you want to continue, and just follow the prompt to say "yes" and YOU'RE DONE!
This guide was made by travisjames and was just put into my own words. His guide was a derivative of Apache14's OTA and Radio downgrade guide for the T-Mobile G2.
Also, thanks to Clarknick27 for tipping me off on how to get back into my phone after it was unbootable.

Ignore/Wrong thread...
two questions-
if i used gfree, do i need to undo gfree 1st? (you make no mention of rooting techniques, and if this undoes all those or not)
second, my phone, about a month ago, lost data connectivity on the usb port-- in other words, it charges fine, but i can not get any computer to pick it up any more to transfer files are use adb, which is a royal pain. -- can i use terminal emulator to accomplish your commands, or am I SOL ?
thanks
Yes, you need to undo Gfree.
Yes, you can run the commands from Terminal Emulator.
Added to Wiki.
thanks jack,
would the syntax be exactly the same as above via term em?
Yes, just skip the "adb shell" command.
Is this to undo 2.3.4 GB update and take it back to 2.2.1?
How do I undo gfree? And if I just run the pg15img will I keep root? I need a way to return to stock but rooted.

First question, Here is the thread you need to undo gfree (get s-on) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=858996 (about half way down OP)
Second question, no you will not keep root
witch stock rom do you want rooted, stock 2.3.4 can not be rooted right now
So... to summarize, this would be to revert back to Android 2.3.4, sense 3.5 STOCK, without root, eng. hboot, or s=off.
In other words, if you purchased a MT4G now, or received a replacement MT4G with 2.3.4.... Following these steps will give you this new gingerbread stock state (approximately).
Please confirm. Thanks!

Yes...check the 3rd and 4th post of this thread....
Just curious, so if I flash this ROM in recovery, will I lose root, s-off, etc.?
What I'm trying to do is flash the phone to the MT4G stock rom (which I assume this is), use gfree to sim unlock it, then revert back to my nandroid backup, so I wanna make sure this will not interfere with my root access before I proceed to flashing it. Thanks in advance to whoever answers me~!

You don't need to type adb shell because you are on terminal emulator.
Just type su to gain superuser access.
Then type dd if=/sdcard/miscnew.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p17
Make sure you have the file miscnew.img in the root of your sd card.
Absolutely Perfect
I have looked and looked all over both XDA and the Interent in general. I was trying to restore my Glacier (MyTouch 4g) from stock 2.3.4 to stock 2.2. NOTHING worked. It got to the point that I didn't even remember everything that I tried. I followed this guide to the T. PERFECT!!! I am now back to having my phone exactly how I left the Tmo store with it.

Sorry, a complete noob to "gfree". I'm a new convert to GSM as I was with SPrint CDMA for 10 years until a couple weeks ago. I've rooted Samsing phones but never an HTC.
Anyways, I just purchased a MyTouch that had been rooted and loaded with Virtuous ROM. It's for my wife and she wants it back to stock. I tried all your directions exactly but still will not work. I'm assuming it's this "gfree" issue. I followed the link to the other thread but it's not clear on exactly what I need to do in my situation.
When I run the bootloader, it says bad or no such image... I have confirmed I have PD15IMG.zip and miscnew.img in the sdcard root directory.
Can someone please show me in simplified terms. Thanks!

If you are new to this rooting stuffs, i suggest don't go with methods, that have potential to brick your phone.
Just do this simple method, Follow the link in my signature, you will see a Rooted version of the stock 2.3.4 rom.

5. Let it do its thing

8. Reboot into bootloader where it will flash the "PG06IMG.zip" and reboot.
9. Get visionary like we did at work and hopefully you can live with temproot till i get the permroot down.
to everyone else this would be the correct way right? Of course double checking before i touch my friends phone.
Ok then im missing the ruu and 2.2. That would be the misc correct? So i think i need frevo again. I mightve gotten a bad one.

I don't know how to help with temp root as it's basically just copy and paste once you have temp root just download the RUU and the misc posted in the thread (if you don't know the thread ill get a, link) and put them on the root of your sd card. then my personal reccomendation is just do the rest from terminal emulator on your phone.
Type:
su (then allow superuser permissions
Then type the command posted in the thread (there's only one)
Then flash the RUU in hboot by turning the phone completley off (no fastboot) and holding down volume down and power at the same time a screen should come up and it will load the zip.
During the process the phone might reboot once just don't touch it. It automatically boots back up into bootloader

I have adb set up correctly and drivers installed. When I use command prompt on Windows 7 64 bit and type in "adb devices" it lists a string of letters/numbers and after that it says device. When I type in adb push rage /sdcard/ the command prompt moves the cursor to a new blank line and I can't type anything in. Is this normal? Phone is HTC EVO shift 4G running stock 2.3.3 and HTC sense 2.1. Again comp OS is Windows 7 64 bit. Yes the rage file is in the /platform-tools folder. Any ideas on if this is normal/alternative rooting methods (excluding ShiftRR and other comp programs. I checked them all. No apps either. They don't work, I've tried them all.) If it helps I'm following the guide at: wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/HTC_Evo_Shift_4G:_Full_Update_Guide
1) Rage doesnt work on 2.3.3, it was a froyo exploit. I suggest either using the script I made to automatically do it for you if you want or you can do it manually.
2) The auto root method that I created is located at the link --> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1277793
3) Manual method is in general section.
Thanks bunches. I'm going to try your script next time I try. I'm usually kinda busy. And does your script need any additional files? This is gonna sound like a n00b question but it's because I AM a n00b. What the heck is RUU? It sounds like an EXE file I dl on my comp and run. Correct or not? Sorry if this has been asked anywhere else but I have been searching since August trying to find a rooting method and now that one is close I'm impatient.
It includes everything you need. Just extract everything to a single folder then run Fre3atlast.bat
An RUU is an official way to "update" firmware on your phone in either PG06IMG.zip or .exe format so you were correct. The script even gives you a link to download the format of your choice.

No there is currently no one touch root tool for the shifts that are on 2.3.3 because you have to physically push an image to misc.partition, but once you get it downgraged then you can use like ShiftRR and let that root for you,hit up the stickie section for all the info needed
If the downgrade thread by scary isnt a stickie yet it needs to be and it would be located in development section....btw thanks for not starting a new thread

Wait, if the .zip file can be used to "update" a phone, why not put a custom recovery.img and everything else in it and update that way? Sorry if this is a stupid question just don't flame me please.
It's not S-off, just doesnt version check. It needs the signature to be verified and without the HTC private keys, that doesnt work.

His script will temp root and push the exploit allowing you to use the RUU which will downgrade to Froyo. Once you run the RUU use either the CM wiki or use THIS guide to root.
Where do I start the guided at? Since the script temproots, does that mean I start the wiki at flashing the HBOOT?

Ok, so my phone got an OTA update, and I updated. Then I went to downloads, and redownloaded it. Is it still signed? If it is, is there any way I can use that to root my phone? I can upload the file to 4shared if need be.
1) until you can verify that you can root again after taking an OTA, you NEVER update. 2) Just try and run the script again, then try to downgrade.
1: I thought it was ICS
2: I mean modify the OTA update zip file.
Well, I'm writing this thread because I happily have a root method that doesn't require HTC unlock and you can downgrade to 2.2. Let's get into the information about it:
Required:
ADB
PG06IMG.zip {Downgraded version}
misc.img * {md5sum = c88dd947eb3b36eec90503a3525ae0de}
tacoroot *
*included in zip file
Instructions:
Alright, for this you will need to run the following commands:
Code:
adb push tacoroot.sh /data/local/tmp/taco
adb shell chmod 755 /data/local/tmp/taco
adb shell sh /data/local/tmp/taco --setup
[COLOR="Red"]YOU NEED TO Hit Vol up + Vol Down + Power all at once after it goes into recovery![/COLOR]
After it reboots type:
Code:
adb shell sh /data/local/tmp/taco --root
and then you use
Code:
adb shell dd if=/sdcard/misc.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p17
Pull your battery after you check the md5sum of the img by using adb shell md5sum /dev/block/mmcblk0p17
and then reboot into hboot to downgrade

Im considering reporting my current shift lost and sending it to you.
but after I get money to pay for a replacement lol
guys, look on the bright side: If I have a donated shift, I can also try to develop a root for the rom instead of having to downgrade. I already have some ideas but I need to test on latest version. :|

... I happily have a root method that doesn't require HTC unlock and you can downgrade to 2.2.

Thanks for this! I was able to use the temp root to "adb pull" the entirety of the (kernel visible) flash, as well as the /boot, /system, WiMax, and /data partitions (after remounting r/o). Because of that, after I'd downgraded (which seems really unnecessary JUST to get to a flashable HBoot, but that's another topic), I was able to flash back the new radios and touchscreen firmware (as seen in another thread), then flash the CWM recovery, which let me reflash /system and /data from my previously-unlocked Shift (and Nandroid that for future use, as well). After modifying the stock 2.3.4 /boot to set ro.secure to "0" then flashing that with fastboot, then pushing Superuser.apk and the "su" binary, I was exactly back to where I was before (which was VERY important to me, I didn't want to have to start over from a clean wipe), except now I have root- so I was able to use TiBu to move stuff that was ordinarily marked "Phone Only" to the SD-Card, freeing up some space (which along with how slow this phone is and how little memory it's got are my major gripes with the Shift).
(TL;DR: I now have root and didn't lose anything I had before I started).
It's nice to have the TiBu and Nandroids, too- despite the glowing reviews I read here, I seriously dislike this handset, but I hear there's ROMs out there that make this thing usable. So, now I get to try 'em, and always go back if they're no better after all.
[Edit: This requires s-off currently.]
Superboot is a boot.img that when booted, will root your device the first time you boot (installing su and the superuser APK). No need to flash any partitions, no need to mess around with ADB, no messing with the contents of your data partition, no overwriting the shipped ROM on your device, just boot the boot image using the instructions below and you're done!
APPLY THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK!
Superboot r1 - DOWNLOAD - MD5: ab9dc381d81f91ce311bd021339b5577
How to use Superboot - Windows, Linux and OSX
Download the Superboot zip file above and extract to a directory
Put your device in bootloader mode - Turn off the phone then turn on with the 'volume up' button pressed to enter the bootloader (see note below)
WINDOWS - double click 'install-superboot-windows.bat'
MAC - Open a terminal window to the directory containing the files, and type 'chmod +x superboot-mac.sh' followed by './install-superboot-mac.sh'
LINUX - Open a terminal window to the directory containing the files, and type 'chmod +x superboot-linux.sh' followed by './install-superboot-linux.sh'
Note: You need to unlock the bootloader on your device before you can enter bootloader mode - use the htcdev site to do this.

Without messing the data partition? Damn. Should had this before last friday. Any way for getting back calculator, teeter, torchlight, sound recorder and ringtone trimmer?
Will this work on Unlocked Bootloader with S-On?

Your best option would probably be to create a thread asking for someone upload them for you.

Best question yet : Does it work with bootloader locked (out-of-the-box)? That way we can backup with Titanium before applying a custom rom?
Thanks!

It does work. But I see a problem there. Doesn't Titanium backup need root? Doesn't root need an unlocked bootloader?

You could potentially attempt to use tacoroot (universal HTC exploit) and backup your entire /system/app and /data/app folder and then post all of that up so people can get it after they unlock bootloader
But other than that, unless you can find a security exploit that allows you to inject root, then no
Re: Superboot - HTC One root solution
Doesn't Carbon backup offer a non-root option?

I think the most importend question is if you can get root without HTC dev from this..

No, it can be rooted. Use the toolkit, or do it manually like you should be xD
Toolkit: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2183942
Manually (if you wanna have some fun): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2182792
Also, have more respect for this forum (not saying me, just everyone in general), the link in your signature links to a website of fools who clearly haven't used XDA properly imho.

Thanks, just rooted, CWM installed, working fine.
Yes, the link in my sig is for all the fools in a forum I used to be in (gt i9000), every day there would be a new "ROM" with "super tweaks, battery saves, ultra super mod" etc, where the only difference would be a theme and some settings changed. I.e., not a real ROM. Kids.

OK Paul my HTC bootloader is unlocked by HTC method. I can get to the Recovery and want to install your Superboot but the options are diferent to what i have seen on the Galaxy S. On the HTC One the options for recovery are 'apply from SD.....' etc there doesn't seem to be an option for 'Install from SD.......'
I am quiet new to rooting phones and don't fully understand the tech jargon but it's a learning curve eh!.
Perhaps you could be kind enough to help me root my HTC One.
Dont mind at all getting my hands dirty.
Have a good day.
