How much data are you using each month? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

Go to att.com and pull up your past data useage and post it up!
Mine. I just started using my wireless whenever I'm at home. So it's less than it could be for the last month or two.

Past usage and for this month...

I download about 100 gigs a month on my home internet. Less than 2 gigs a month on my phone. I'll watch streaming videos on youtube, cnn, and such once in a while. If I want to watch something whole movies or tv shows on long trips, I'll just put it on the phone.

My highest was 1.8 GB last November when the skyrocket launched...probably all the speed tests I did! I feel like I am on the phone all the time, but there is wifi about everywhere I go...may sell the skyrocket for the GNote if the battery life is decent.

Right now I have sprint and get unlimited data. I'm switching to AT&T to get the skyrocket next month.
Once I switch I will only have 3gb of data.
Can anyone confirm rather or not there is a way to set the skyrocket to download updates to apps only while connected to wifi? Or maybe a way to set it to only download updates from like 2am to 6am? (while I'm at home sleep and connected to wifi)
Thanks!

Yes, there is. You can set that inside the settings/preferences within the Market app. That's the same across the board with the new Market App on all android devices. Presently, I have mine to only update when on wifi, so that saves on the data use because I'm still on the 2gig limit.

Man, I am WAY on the other end of the spectrum from you guys.
I use consistently less than 100 MB. It's really all the garbage and bloatware backgrounding data that will kill you. I turn data off when I'm not using it, and mostly use it for web/forum browsing and GPS nav when I'm away from WiFi, and a lot of times I'm as low as like 30MB for the month.

Man, you guys use so little data.
I mean, I use quite a bit, but usually not more then 6GB, and that's a lot for me on mobile data.
I still wonder how AT&T compresses data, because I watched a 2 hour live stream on LTE, and only used 200MB of data... insane.

Thank you for this...
I have always wondered how much data is being used when watching Netflix. Based on your post about 100MB per hour... So a 30 min show would be about 50mb.
Question: where are tou streaming from? Netflix? Crackle? Some others?

On average I hit anywhere from 15-28GB a month... Yeah I know...

I have a 6 gigs monthly limit..... used 4.6 gigs last month

I tend to use a lot of data. I stream from Pandora at least a couple hours every day. I could use wifi more at home, but LTE is still faster than my 15Mbps home connection. I wouldn't say I abuse it (I tether very little), but I do use every bit I can of my "unlimited" data.

Wow seriously 100gigs.. I guess my question is how to you guys feel about the amount of usage? Part of me says cmon its a digital world of course people will use more data, these days even young kids have cell and tablets.. But then I feel like damn how much do you really need? Abuse or is it advancement I'm just not sure how to feel... I use about a 1g a month but then again I use wifi at home school the coffee shop, mall wherever I can get a single just to save my data.. I think he said 100 gigs on his home internet. I am sure I use at least that much, probably more. We have a desktop, three laptops and 2 ipad plus two phones and 2 rokus. I have Verizon Fios Internet with a 50 down 20 up and we do a lot of streaming on our home connection!
On my phone however, I have not gone over 2 GB since wifi is everywhere. I will usually use wifi even if it is in a place where it is slower than LTE. I do not think I have ever streamed over LTE except when making video calls with my kids.

less than 200 MB

haha yah i did so many speedtests when i first got my skyrocket. That was the most i used in one month...1.7GB. There really arent many places i dont have wifi tho so it was surprising to me that i went that high

There is an app that you can set scripts based on time location. Depending what you script it to do depends on you though. For the life of me I cannot think of the app name( found in market). I have tried them before. Neat idea.
I also got throttled first month with skyrocket. Moving to new house...internet wasn't hooked up yet...so if course tether my phone to my PC and create a bridge to cat5 going to supply my Xbox. (No wireless adapter yet]. And downloading movies from demonoid. But not illegally I might add

Htc data usage

Im coming up on 24gb of data usage on my thunderbolt and still have 15 days left on this billing cycle. Has anybody here passed this amount of usage and has verizon tried to limit the data after too much usage.
thanks
The fine print says if you are in the top 5% in data usage they will throttle. But I asked sales rep and manager at my Verizon store and they said unlimited means unlimited to them.

$30, I hope unlimited data from Verizon meant unlimited data, no gab after certain amount of usage. I am at about 20GB "finger cross"
I'm lucky to push 5gb. What am I doing wrong?
I got the Thunderbolt on March 28th. My first billing cycle ran from that 28th to April 6th. That time, I hit around 30gb. So far from April 7th to now, the 29th, I've hit 77.974gb with my bill cycle May 6th. So far, no throttling, nothing like that. When I noticed my internet went out during the big, nationwide LTE crash two days ago, I thought at first VZW cut me off for high usage. I was relieved to go onto this forum and find I wasn't the only one.
I don't want to brag about it, but since I haven't seen any negative actions so far, you should be good to go. I don't know if I get preferential treatment due to being a VZW employee though...
And for those who are curious, all that usage is from "Internet Connection Mode", USB tethering to my PC, downloading PC games from Steam and some torrents.

When I tether my 4G connection and download torrents I only get about 1 kbps down! Do you change your settings in your torrent program for tethering?
Wow. 72GB?
I noticed that the first 7 days of use, my usage shot up to about 4gigs. Then it seems to have slowed to about 5.5gigs total in the next 14 days, and now i stand at 5.7gigs. Got 1 more week left on bill cycle.

I haven't made any modifications at all. I simply connect my Thunderbolt to my PC, it asks me what option I wish to choose, I choose "Internet Connection Mode", wait a few seconds and I am connected. The fastest speeds I have gotten down so far are 2MB/s, the fastest upload around 500KB/s.

If they going to limit the data then they need to remove the word unlimited. Whether you are the top 5% of their users or not. Not many people read the fine prints. When I login and see a big word stating unlimited. So I beleive I have unlimited.

Netflix data usage

Hi,
So like an idiot I "upgraded" to the new T-Mobile "unlimited" plan with the 2 GB limit. At the time, it made sense to switch; I'd save money on minutes, and I'm not a heavy data user. Right now I use ~200-300 MB a month. At most, I've used 6xx MB recently. My data heavy data apps right now are Pandora and Sling player. And, I'm on wifi when at home, and on campus.
However, I have now started to deeply regret my derision now that Google has announced their new cloud and music services, Netflix has finally launched their app for select android devices (including my N1), and T-Mobile announced free Wi-fi calling on new devices. I'm not asking for pity or reticule, but I need some questions answered.
Does anyone have any idea how much data the new Netflix app uses when using 3/4G? AT&T iPhone users, some of you use Netflix with similar caps, how easy is it for you to reach the cap? Those of you have gone over the 2GB limit on T-Mobile, how badly did they throttle you, if at all?
Finally, I thought I'd share my two cents worth on data usage and caps. I'll gladly stay a capped customer on T-Mobile if such moves allow T-Mobile to return to profitability without the likes of AT&T. Data is data, and data caps on home internet service are abominations. However, bandwidth is not free, and broadband cell service is one of the most expensive last-mile solutions to maintain; it is also primarily a supplemental form of connectivity for most customer So, I have no problem with T-Mobile trying to make a buck and stay afloat, so long as they maintain their current levels of quality and customer service.
those are some good questions. I do know that streaming video takes ALOT of data. So you would be able to do mabe 2 full netflix videos a week would be about my guess. but then again you stream audio too so in doing that, I would say maybe 1 video a week.
I have a friend with the SGS4G and he got put on that plan and hates it. He was using it alott, mainly bc he came from crappy verizon service with maybe 1mbps download to this phone which he hit 21mbps. anyways, when he went over 2gb and got throttled down to just under 2mbps. now that its later in the month, it seems to be they are slowing him down more. He lately has only been getting .06mbps
So yea, it sucks for him. reallly bad.
Well, that answers my throttling questions thanks. Video streaming is done using a variable bit rate, meaning that data usage can rise and fall along with the quality of the video. I'm sure Netflix takes data usage into account when streaming the video over cell. They recently had to preform similar actions for their Canadian costumers, many of whom are subject to ridiculous caps on their home internet connections. I also think that I will rarely watch a full-length movie entirely on 3/4G. So, I'm not too concerned as of yet. I'll experiment once my next billing cycle starts, track my usage, and report the results an a new thread.
I would be willing to bet your friend did a fair bit of tethering?
Let me get this straight. The straight up "Unlimited plan" is even more limited than the regular unlimited 4g web??? Wow, some of that att mentality is already creeping up into that dump i see....

Here is my experience..
I'm on t-mobile with the MyTouch 4G. I haven't used netflix as of yet, but I do stream a lot on my phone with other various apps and websites to watch TV shows. I do accounting so I'm usually in my office alone through the day and I have the capabilities of watching shows on my phone, since accounting is extremely boring and i need something to keep me going.
Anyway, on average, a regular TV show (like friends), runs about 25 minutes. And in that time, I use anywhere from 70 - 100mb. Fortunately, I still have t-mobile's "unlimited" data which caps at 5gb.
I have reached the cap once, and for 2 days, they limited my throttle to edge speed! It was ridiculous!
There are a few apps in the market that help keep track of the data you are using. What I personally did was calculate how much data I could use per day and limit myself to that. I could check the apps to make sure I wasn't passing my limit. It's been working pretty well so far.
I hope this helped to whoever needed it!
Thanks are appreciated to all that this helped!

you can also get Movie Stream app off the market. its pretty sweet. Watch movies without a monthly payment. it just streams them from a few different sites. Same Developers as TV Shows Stream app. pretty cool stuff d-('.')-b

Your actually pretty lucky dude. Edge speeds really are not that bad in comparison to GPRS/1G/whatever you want to call it. Most of the time getting throttled means getting 1g speeds. I do know that if you go into networks and change it to edge only networks you can get edge speeds, but somehow you were lucky enough to get them off the bat.

That's probably for desktop streaming, not mobile. Someone I know who uses it on the iPhone said it uses ~200-300 MB/2 hours.
looking at the quality of the mobile movies/shows I'd say about 250mb an hour

[Q] How big should a data plan be?

I've searched the forum before posting this and couldn't find a similar thread, so here's my question (2 actually):
1)How big should a 3G data plan be, for the Nexus S?
2)Also, is there a way to allow only a few apps to connect to the internet through 3G, while the rest use only wifi?
I want to use it for checking mail on 2 accounts, send/receive about 40-50 messages daily (through whatsapp), a little navigation on Google Maps, 2-3 clips on youtube and checking a couple of webpages each day. In my country, unlimited data plans are a rarity and the most common are 50mb, 250mb and 500mb.Thanks!
I'm in the US and use my phone for just about everything all day so I eat up about 100 MB a day. I use wifi anywhere I don't get 4g coverage as well. I would say to be safe go with the 500 unless it is a major price difference. If you have access to wifi regularly and keep track of data usage a plan with even 250 MB should be OK. Hope this helps a little.
Sent from my SGH-T959V using XDA Premium App
Agree, but it depends on your usage, for me 250mb is enought, but some months i push the limit (what costs 6 cents for 1mb, not a big deal).
I'd recommend if can to get the 500 or if possible 1gb.
I'm using my phone for about the same plus surfing the net and my monthly usage is about 600 - 700mb.
Try the app Call meter 3g so you can keep track of your usage. It doesn't count wi-fi traffic.
Good luck

Well, after some intensive reading over the internet, I think that I could settle for 500mb. In the android market, there's an app called Droid Wall (needs root) and that should make sure the only apps connecting to the internet through 3G are those I want. Thanks for your help!
Now reading about rooting the NS
EDIT: also, I've found something called 3G Watch Dog, so it's easier to keep an eye out on the data traffic over 3G.

even if you don't use a firewall (like droid wall) stand-by usage is not that big, the problem is YOUR usage, you can easly take a month with 20mb if you only let it to stand-by, but if you watch 3 youtube videos, 20mb is gone!" =o)

Well I think 5gigs is far.. I mean FAR from what I'm capable of over 3G. Whenever there's a wifi hotspot available, I prefer connecting to the internet through it. The 3G connection is just for those areas in which there's no wifi in sight.
500Mb is sort of like the minimum where I am. The quota usually comes in 500Mb, 1G, 1.5G, 3G, 5G...
For me, I will stay under 500Mb if I don't use services like Google Maps or Waze, if I do, I will be around 700-800Mb a month.

I found that Play Music sent over 185 MB in background data in just 1 day! I disabled the option to download any song while not using Wi-Fi and it still used 185 MB, so I disabled all background data unless it is on Wi-Fi. My carrier plan only has 700 MB available per month. Apart from that, everything is normal.
I concur. Over 2 days play music ate 800mb of data, right at the beginning of my cycle too. If you have it, make sure all the boxes pertaining to caching are off.

Lazard, biggies culprit is Google Play Store, sent about 661MB. Then Android OS with 385. Dropbox with 276. Path also used 229 so I just uninstalled it. Google Play Music used 186 but hasn't changed and Memedroid. But yeah no Netflix streaming or anything, Google Play store sent about half of gig of background data.
I'm glad I have unlimited data. I'm always on wifi when available but I'm concestently getting close to 5 GB every month.

I'm on unlimited as well. At this rate though, AT&T will throttle me down in no time. /:
Your data usage is under 2gb they said... you will be fine with 2gb they said... WRONG! Using my old Galaxy Q my provider (Rogers) tried to tell me that I am using around 1.5gb a month maximum. What they didn't get through their head was that was on the lowest model phone and on internet data E! The slowest one..
I kept my 6gb when I signed a new contract and I think I used maybe 5.5GB this month. But that's with downloading all the new apps etc, lots of navigation usage, and songza etc. Probably pipe it down a notch when I use my wifi more often.
No problems at all here. I have used 3gb of my 4gb plan over the last bill cycle, but only because we had a tornado rip through here and I was without power for almost a week. I have wifi at home and listen to Pandora almost daily in the car.
I don't see how you guys are using that much network data.
This is my weeks mobile data usage. I guess I just use WiFi more than most.

You should know that streaming music is going to eat up mobile data...

i stopped using google play music while not on wifi. That app tears through data like no other.
I use 4GB data per month!

Does anybody feel like this phone just rips through data? I set my 2GB data limit and it ripped it a new one in just 3 days of having the device. Anyone else having high data usage? I'm running stock just rooted if it matters.

My biggest consumer is tethering to my laptop at work. Aside from that i use WiFi as much as u can or when I remember to switch it on. Right now I'm close to 4 GB and my cycle is a 1.5 weeks from renewing. Half that use is hotspot, then slacker radio 800mb then android os at 180mb. Everything else is like 40mb or less...

I'm on my 3GB plan monthly. it's been about 10 days of purchase and I've gone through little less than a gig. only because I just got this phone and tried out LTE speed and download stuff more than usual. but my data usages seems not any different than my previous atrix 2 phone.
Up 9 GB so far this month..

On my S2 I would have to stop doing almost everything data-related on my phone for the last few days of the month. I have 6GB and I think I have used 1.5GB in 4 days with my new S4. I don't know how anybody manages on less than 6GB! I think LTE is part to blame, given that youtube videos may be fully loaded before you realize it's the wrong one.
Thw day i got my S4 i went through 2.9gb because my girlfriends wifi kept going out but now I'm fine no issues.(I was downloading rom's and such lol)

So its not just me? I used over 5 GB of data this month with this phone, I have limited data so my bill is going to suck. I dont know why.
Maybe too much youtube to enjoy the screen idk.
I have a 3gb data monthly cap on my current plan(which I need to change) but imagine if I didn't have Wi-Fi, I'd be paying a lot of overages on my days plan!

I dont know it either. I didnt do anything. It still shows I used a few hundred MB data. Did ATT calculate it incorrectly?
my old HTC Windows mobile phone used very small amount of data. ..........
N ow I turn off the mobile data when working in the office.

Tutorial- how to tether ps4 unrestricted

Would anyone be interested in having this? If there's support I'll write it up, but if not don't wanna waste my time...chime in if you think this would be a good tutorial.
Edit- i want to be sure to give credit on this to the original tmo upsell page that i can't seem to find now to link at the moment smh that's what made me investigate after reading reports in that thread that it no longer worked, but seems it does, the major difference- i think- being to specify another user agent, don't just strip it null, and I'm working on tweaking the setup because fiddler4 isn't handling the certificate requests quite right, which causes you to have to babysit it in the case of large downloads where the same http tunnel has to be opened for an extended period of time, so once i have the links out I'll post the planned "tutorial", and i think in the meantime i might just document my process on getting the glitches out of fiddler4- errr should i say, adjusting it's handling of such- for the sake of someone else who may be in my position and want to use a wireless connection for their ps4. In the UK tmo had signed agreements with Sony to make data available to people who purchase the system because Sony knows how important it is to have data access. No one wants to shell out 500+ bucks on a system and then find out that system could eat as much as 300gb of data in a month. Even how cable service in some places have caps in place and throttling- like if you're unfortunate enough to have hughesnet smh not that 1st person stuff is gonna run with 1500-2000ms ping time averages, but there are still games that aren't as ping intensive that'll work fine, and the large file downloads are much better than years ago, onboard routing on the birds has made lots of difference. It's still inherently ping challenged, but other than that it's really pretty good- but the usage caps are miserable, along with others who have dsl or other smaller regional providers, it can get excessive- buy 3 or 4 60 buck games in one month and see if updates alone don't cost ya 50gb+! So the idea, yes, is to swap out all the http headers on the fly so that not just browsers from a pc are able to spoof the packet header, but ALL traffic, irregardless of its' source- so even your ps4 or Xbox one- as long as you have a pc (I'm sure a mac could probably be used, but I'm using a win10 pc, so that's what I'm writing on) to put between the console/tv/pc/bluray player/you get it and your wireless device you can replace the header of every packet that passes thru and make tmo's systems see the connection as an android chrome device instead of, say, a PS4
More to come.........

Alrighty, well give me a bit to type it up with all the links etc...it requires you to connect your device to your pc via USB and enable the tether, then connect your ps4 directly to your pc with a crossover cable, bridge those two connections, run Fiddler4 on the pc with a few settings enabled that strip the user agent string from every http header and replace it. It's basically an update to the thread that already exists that explains how to do it using the old fiddler 2...but i guess people no longer were able to make it work for whatever reason, but i got the new fiddler 4 running great! I'm currently in excess of my 7gb of hotspot data by about 80gb and i hadn't been able to get the ps4 to download the black ops 3 update for like a week- Netflix would work on the ps4, but downloads from the notification page would get throttled and there wasn't any good way to get around it without getting rid of that user agent string. Vpn is too slow and/or expensive, so I'm thrilled i found this workaround still works with some updated software! i haven't been able to play black ops 3 multiplayer for over a week because i needed this 9gb update and couldn't download it! Smh lol but all is well! Fiddler handles it like a champ! Not the most convenient thing to have to connect everything with wires and put a laptop between the ps4 and the device, but it sure does work!

What kind of plan do you have with T-Mobile? I have only 1GB of data plan at the moment but if I tether anything over 1GB of data then I'll be throttled down to a very slow speed.

Yeah, it doesn't really help you unless you have unlimited device data and only measured hotspot data....

Well I've got to tell ya, it's been REALLY hit or miss, fiddler 4 WILL remove or replace your useragent string in the ip header but that's only getting you past the automated checking, but post analysis may still get you dinged depending on what exactly you're doing....
