[Q] How big should a data plan be?

I've searched the forum before posting this and couldn't find a similar thread, so here's my question (2 actually):
1)How big should a 3G data plan be, for the Nexus S?
2)Also, is there a way to allow only a few apps to connect to the internet through 3G, while the rest use only wifi?
I want to use it for checking mail on 2 accounts, send/receive about 40-50 messages daily (through whatsapp), a little navigation on Google Maps, 2-3 clips on youtube and checking a couple of webpages each day. In my country, unlimited data plans are a rarity and the most common are 50mb, 250mb and 500mb.Thanks!

I'm in the US and use my phone for just about everything all day so I eat up about 100 MB a day. I use wifi anywhere I don't get 4g coverage as well. I would say to be safe go with the 500 unless it is a major price difference. If you have access to wifi regularly and keep track of data usage a plan with even 250 MB should be OK. Hope this helps a little.

Agree, but it depends on your usage, for me 250mb is enought, but some months i push the limit (what costs 6 cents for 1mb, not a big deal).

I'd recommend if can to get the 500 or if possible 1gb.
I'm using my phone for about the same plus surfing the net and my monthly usage is about 600 - 700mb.
Try the app Call meter 3g so you can keep track of your usage. It doesn't count wi-fi traffic.

Well, after some intensive reading over the internet, I think that I could settle for 500mb. In the android market, there's an app called Droid Wall (needs root) and that should make sure the only apps connecting to the internet through 3G are those I want. Thanks for your help!

EDIT: also, I've found something called 3G Watch Dog, so it's easier to keep an eye out on the data traffic over 3G.

even if you don't use a firewall (like droid wall) stand-by usage is not that big, the problem is YOUR usage, you can easly take a month with 20mb if you only let it to stand-by, but if you watch 3 youtube videos, 20mb is gone!" =o)

Wow... I go over my limit of 5gigs almost every month I guess I am one of Those heavy data users I have been hearing about.... Too bad we have this terrible bit shortage I can only Hope the carriers stumble onto a new rich source of bits to satisfy my need

Well I think 5gigs is far.. I mean FAR from what I'm capable of over 3G. Whenever there's a wifi hotspot available, I prefer connecting to the internet through it. The 3G connection is just for those areas in which there's no wifi in sight.

500Mb is sort of like the minimum where I am. The quota usually comes in 500Mb, 1G, 1.5G, 3G, 5G...
For me, I will stay under 500Mb if I don't use services like Google Maps or Waze, if I do, I will be around 700-800Mb a month.

I personally only used 4GB and received the message.
I signed a contract for unlimited data with AT&T . Not a "limited unlimited data plan". They state that once an "unlimited data" customer is among the top 5% of there data users they will "throttle" the users data speed. Apparently once a user reaches 2 gigabytes of usage they slow down the speed. NOT once they become one of the top 5%.
If you search the website for "AT&T" there are some other petitions you can sign as well. But the one above has the best letter and most signatures so far.

I always wondered what their criteria was for finding the top 5%. Do they measure it at the end of your billing cycle and compare it to other users? Or measure the amount of data you use so far at a specific date? Or gauge the rate that you are using (ie, 2gb/wk= 8gb/mo)? Obviously everyone has different billing periods, therefore data resets at different times of the month. Does anyone know what I'm talking about? Or am I just overly confused?

Lol... I called ATT about something else a while ago and brought this up in the conversation.. the answer was that the guy had no idea WTF was going on.. I think .. idk. It's so confusing.

It is worth a shot to try. What they are doing is wrong. How am I in the top 5% when I only used 4GB, some people have gotten the message using a lot less... and I see people on here claiming they are using 10+ GB!!! I am not going down without a fight... If nothing happens... then of course I will be left with no choice but to find a new carrier.
I can't seem to get that APN setting to work... I am going to use my data as normal and see when they decide to throttle me this month.

Yes, I agree that it is worth the fight. Not saying that you are wrong there bro. I manage to never get the letter so I haven't tried to force those apn settings but I would suggest trying a different modem or a different rom.

They're sent to the top 5% in your area. In other words; it's extremely dependent on where you're at. If you live in a small town where there's maybe 300 people with an unlimited plan, chances are you're gonna be in that top 5% a lot sooner.
Personally, I think that scrapping the localisation on this would do a lot of good for AT&T's image. Right now, there's people who can pull 50+ GB of data off their plan, while others who pay the same amount get throttled at 1.2 GB. It's ludicrous. Having the throttling happen based on whether or not you're in the national top 5% of data users would make far more sense..

I personally have not gotten the message, but I would surely feel as strongly about it as you do if I had. I most certainly would consider it to be an outrage, mostly because I use about the same amount of data as you do. (around 4gig)
Props also go out to those that have figured a way to bypass the throttling! I'm not currently running a custom rom at the moment, so I don't see all the options available to do so. I've made the settings that I found, but unsure of the impact.
Despite the outcome, this should be fought on principle alone.
On a side note I've often wondered how it is that AT&T is able to charge for 3 services when it all breaks down to sending a data packet? Voice = data packet. Text message = data packet. Data plan = data packet. In my mind this is also a travesty, unless I'm just blatantly wrong. I realize what's inside the packet may change, but in the end it's still a data packet. I imagine this is why all these companies have arisen providing unlimited everything plans for $50 a month, and I think I'm headed that way soon.

I understand its gauged locally, but how is it measured? Everyone is on a different billing period. Mine starts on the 1st while yours starts on the 15th. By the 30th, I've used 5gb and you've only used 2gb. How do they compare your usage with mine and get an accurate (I use that term loosely) estimation of who's in the top percentage at a specific time when they send you that text? The only thing that makes sense to me is them monitoring your usage after your period ends? Or unless it like what op said; random warning texts @ 2gb or so.

I signed it. I haven't gotten the letter because I'm always on wifi, but at&t's throttling people for such low amounts of data is wrong. The throttled speeds seem to be unusable too.

I couldn't even access the market when they throttled my speeds.

I switched to Sprint. Got tired of throttling. I do miss the speed when I had it. Albeit for the week of 3G. But sprint is doing me good otherwise.

This would explain why I have not gotten this and I have had near 5gig months because of Pandora at work and they do not have Wifi on my floor. I live in the Chicago market. Guessing there is some very high users in my area.

I have 2gb of data a month, I never use more than 400mb a month. Wifi is all you need!

You honestly don't expect everyone else to use data the way you do. I use wifi whenever I can, which is as soon as I get home or when I'm in class. The remainder of the day I'm at my office, or driving around using maps/navigation, emails, browsing, Facebook, words with friends, etc. So I don't have wifi. And no, I'm not gonna hunt around for a Starbucks or Mc Donald's just to hook up to wifi that has lower speeds than my 3G; its just ridiculous.

In my opinion It's Stupid to stream any type of media while your away from your house on a Data connection! You know it's gonna use a ridiculous amount especially if your gonna sit there and stream HD videos over Data! Why wouldn't At&t have a right to throttle your usage, Pure waste. Using GPS and and other type of map software is a less of a waste. Most of you with 16GB sd cards and higher know better! Store all your music and videos on it, that's what its for. Facebook, Email, and some of your multiplayer games use **** for data, nothing barely gets wasted. With your facebook, email, and multiplayer games you shouldn't even go over 1GB of usage a month. Also Note for those sitting their listening to Pandora on their Data connection. Each song is between 3mb-6mb. How many songs do you listen too now multiply that and see how much your wasting.

I've dl'd a few torrent clients and am learning how they work....question is....is there a particular one that works better?
I went to dl a movie and it showed that it would take 28weeks and 5days to complete,lmao.
I'm also finding that the sites with higher seeding dl faster,but what is concidered a high count,for the numbers I'm seeing aren't all that high.

I use utorrent for both my PC and my phones client. As far as seeds and leaches go remember you can pull from both to get parts of the DL. A seed has the whole file while leachers have just pieces until they finish the DL at which time they become seeders. As long as their are more than 5 seeders(big generalization here) you should be fine. Remember that it's considered torrent etiquette to seed after you receive the DL. Always try to share to a ratio of at least 1. Also remember that torrents are packages with many pieces so you will see slow DL speeds until you get a least a few pieces to share. As soon as that happens your DL speeds will go up fast. I usually get at least 500kb/s down on a well seeded torrent.

It's best if you pick torrents where there are more seeders than leechers. You'll get better speeds that way. On a lot of well seeded torrents you can have your download speeds start at your full connection speed.
Remember, seed:leech ratio is what will control download speed. Normally a torrent that has a few dozen seeders will net you the most speed since a lot of torrent clients have a concurrent connection limit (the number of connections you can have at once) of less than 100 (utorrent, transmission) and you won't gain any more speed from torrents with more than 100 seeders.

I typically use my phone to remote access my home PC and download torrents directly to my home PC. I usually get about 5 MB/s down (even though I have 30 MB plan). I can then just remotely send everything to my seed box and allow uploads to others for a minimum of 2 days.
Since I do not have unlimited data, this avoids me exceeding my data cap and I get better download speeds than using my phone.

I did around 12gb the first month I had unlimited. I need to play with Dosbox and play over battlenet to see what that uses.

Its becuz of people like me that got throttled every month.....that they finally now offer true unlimited data.

Nexus 5 on no data / low data plan.

Anyone here use their Nexus 5 on a prepaid cellphone plan that has no data or low data?
I am thinking about switching over to h2o's Unlimited Talk, Text and 500mb plan to save money and become less dependent on my cell phone. I find myself using about 5 GBS a month on straight talk but its nothing productive, just downloading the latest roms or downloading an app only to delete a few minutes later or checking facebook. I think I could get by fine just using wifi and then the 500MB to check email or use my GPS.

Sorry but... Hobby can be phones, it depends of your point. Maybe because you are on stock non rooted (as I read if I'm not wrong) doesn't mean other users do not have their phones to test kernels, roms, tweak their phone as a hobby.

For testing purposes?
Like you download an app just to see or to test, you can download a rom and flash it to test, right?
That being said, for the OP, not sure a low data plan will make you less "dependent" (maybe good for money), if you have access to wifi? You can always download all the last roms via wifi
It will depend of your real use apart downloading rom, maybe it will be enough with only GPS (again it depends the frequency of use, GPS can be a huge consumer of data ) and email...

You stated in your OP that you think you download and flash too much and you want to cutdown on your plan. If you download 5GB of data and its usefull its fine, but if you delete most of it its a waste of time. I mean dependent in terms of using the phone when I am out in about in public where wifi isnt available. I have no guilt about using my phone when I am sitting at home on the couch watching TV but it will deter the urge to browse the web when I am out with friends or something.

Telling someone they need to find a hobby usually implies that you think someone doesn't have a life.
PS it takes literally 5 minutes to download and flash the latest nightly of cyanogemod. I am not downloading a miillion different roms each month. Just staying up to date.

Only issue I can think of is that most of the Google Now voice commands seem to require an internet connection to work.

I am also on a limited data plan (400mb /mo) and find it kind of limiting. What i use is DS battery saver which turns off your data while your screen is off and turns it on every 30/45/60min for updates. It saves me some data and some battery so it's a win/win for me. I tend to limit my data navigation to mail/facebook and messaging apps and keep the cat gifs/videos for wifi/pc.
Another app you can try is onovo extend (it compresses the internet traffic trough their servers) but i found it a bit fiddly (never know if it's working or not and need to check it constantly) and i suspect it interferes with some apps (had a problem with my maps app but dont quote me on that).
Opera browser also compresses traffic for reduced data use.
Other than this, only your common sense and self control can bring your data use down. Being prepaid can't you buy more data anytime if you need it ?

I don't download much but still using 2gb a month - maybe go for 3 gig and see how that goes? 500mb is nothing nowadays.

I think unless you actually turn the data off, you'd struggle to stay under a 500GB a month allowance. Having seen what mine does on a day when I Fine really use it, id be concerned. You'd definitely need to tweak your sync settings and/or turn off data. Possibily even use opera browser or similar to compress your web pages.

I have a voice and text only plan using WiFi when I need the type of downloads you describe. If I want to watch videos or listen to Music I carry a Meenova OTG micoSD card reader (check the N5 accessories section) and preload the files I need. I consider most of the data plans to be a huge consumer ripoff and am not willing not shell out the bucks for a minor convenience. My comments are definitely personal choice and there are so many WiFi hot spots around the impact of not always having Internet access hasn't hit me yet.

I consider most of the data plans to be a huge consumer ripoff and am not willing not shell out the bucks for a minor convenience. My comments are definitely personal choice and there are so many WiFi hot spots around the impact of not always having Internet access hasn't hit me yet.

I think this comes down to region too (pricing I mean).
In the UK you can get 200 minutes, 5000 texts and truly unlimited data for £12.90 a month (sim only). £15.90 if you want 600 minutes.

Why do you have to download ROMs and apps over 3G? Don't you have wireless at home?
I can easily survive a month with 500MB, while checking my e-mail a few times a day (about 10 e-mails over 5 syncs), checking a few tens of articles over feedly and reading at least 5-10 of them, playing 8 Ball Pool (by Miniclip) at least on hour, using Waze for at least half an hour and other occasional searches. I only install apps over 3G on rare occasions (once a week at most), and when I cannot wait until I get home. And sometimes I'm wondering how could I wisely use more data, not to pile it up at the end of the month.
But that's just me...

Both me and my wife manage fine on a 250mb monthly plan. Over 3G we only need the odd update for the weather app and the usual Whatsapp photos and videos, from other family members. Whilst the photos and vids do consume most of that meagre allowance it still works out fine. The videos will get downloaded when at home and using the wi-fi connection.
Knowing that we are "restricted" on a tight data plan (but managing fine) it does tend to discipline me to no longer bother about using the phone more "frivolously", in terms of data usage, and I suppose when I'm at home I'll use my tablet or PC, much bigger screens etc.
Neither of us feel restricted in our use, and it works out much cheaper, but it does focus the attention away from the phone and the habitual data usage which was neither important nor needed.

The EFF conducted its independent*tests*and found that T-Mobile throttles every video download (including streaming) to 1.5Mbps, which means YouTube will effectively play only at 480p quality. You can turn off BingeOn by logging into your tmo account, navigating to Profile, then media settings.
I have a 20 buck grandfathered unlimited plan and I checked and I had BingeOn enabled

Just checked, it was enabled on my account as well. I also have an unlimited plan, not sure why I would want anything throttled. Thanks for the heads up.

Its a good deal for users that do not have unlimited but it was just kind of implemented in a shady fashion.
I will say videos I couldnt get to play on 1080 (without tons of buffer) are now consistently playing with no issues since turning off BingeOn

Thanks for the heads up. I was frustrated this morning trying to stream YouTube videos this morning with all the buffering even when my speed test was pulling 20 down 10 up

Binge On is turned on by default to all customers no matter what data plan they have. As far as the EFF is concerned they have not finished their investigation. The article written by Android Central writer was bias and bull ****. Binge On is a great service for many customers. My sister watches Netflix and Hulu all day and not charged on her data plan. The Quality of video is damn good. I have unlimited data plan so I checked out of Binge On the very first day it went live. My T-Mobile service is great, super fast data, very strong signal, 5 bars all the time inside my house. Thank You T-Mobile, Thank You John Legere.

Whoa whoa no one is trying to tear down the Supreme Leader Legere. Simply spreading knowledge.
Problem is unlimited users do not need to have BingeOn activated, there is no point. I will say since turning mine off I have noticed a huge difference in the traffic pushed through the Youtube app. I literally could not stream anything above 720 on my mobile signal. My automatic would never default above 720 if I was lucky. Yesterday I let it run for about 5 videos each one defaulting to 1080. HTML5 sites I had to let buffer forever now have no issues for me.
As far as the article you are talking about, haven't seen it. I cited the article from BGR talking about EFF.
Liking a company doesn't mean you need to implicitly agree with and blindly follow everything they do.
It's a great functionality (for tiered data plan users), just implemented in a poor way. If they are truly charging a premium for bandwidth then they are becoming what they accuse everyone else of. Not to mention it sets a dangerous precedent for the internet overall.

It's not about knowing how to turn it off as much as knowing that it would throttle data from sources other than what t-mobile is partnered with. If it didn't throttle other video data what need would anyone have to turn it off?
The instructions were included just in case.

So one thing I figured out, not sure if anyone has already mentioned this but I just got Chromecast but the WiFi I use at home is a Comcast open hotspot so Chromecast won't work on it. In order to use Chromecast I have to use my wifi hotspot on my phone but I noticed if I cast Netflix from my tablet while using the hotspot it doesn't go against my data. Has anyone else heard of this?

When Binge On was first advertised T-Mobile said YouTube had a problem with the technology T-Mobile used in telling what bandwidth was being used by YouTube Videos. That was the reason YouTube didn't join in on Binge On right away. That was a work in progress. I have no problems with this being a Net Neutrality issue, nothing is forced on the customer or charged extra to the customer. T-Mobile has changed the Mobile Industry in a very short time. Most of the complaining is coming from people who aren't even T-Mobile customers. Trolls from the other Carriers are running as far as they can with a very small hiccup in this service. It's a very funny world.

No one is trying to talk down the character of T-Mobile. And even if anyone was, they are big boys and have lawyers that can defend their honor. Your bill wont get cheaper by white knighting for them.
If you want to turn off BingeOn then do it, if you don't then then don't. It's really that simple.
There is a saying about the government, if you aren't upset then you arent paying attention. I equate that to just because you are in favor of something, doesn't mean you should be naive about it.

No, I'm not even rooted. It's been hard, I've been dying to root but I love Samsung Pay so until someone finds a workaround or something I'm stock ?

I'd only imagine the Binge On also applies to tether, and maybe even a work around if you ever needed to show Netflix or another Binge On participant on more than two devices.

I do know that if you have unlimited data, when you tether your phone netflix etc. Won't count towards your tether usage

I think that's awesome for someone like me, because not being able to use Chromecast without a secured network basically ruins the idea of it if I have to use all my tethering data just to watch stuff with it.

I'm not seeing my Netflix data included in my tether usage, but my rom is modded to hide as much as possible, short of user agent detection....i also have unlimited, but without BingeOn, netflix can and will eat all 7gb of tether data in one night streaming. I've fallen asleep with it on and awoken to text messages from tmo telling me my hotspot allotment was GONE....yet Netflix still playing in 1080p as I'm reading it lol its because use agent detection can detect the platform Netflix is running on and if it's not mobile and BingeOn isn't enabled it'll eat your tether allotment almost immediately
Soooooo....yes, BingeOn does seem to be included on the hotspot data as well....but even if you exceed it and get throttled, if you use chrome and set it to mobile user agent, it'll still stream 1080p because it'll think it's mobile.....assuming you've used the unlimited tether mod that's been heavily discussed
