Fed up with Android, lags, bugs, etc - General Topics

I have a sensation which, spec-wise at least, should be a powerhouse, dual core, loads if ram, bla bla but i am FED UP WITH LAGS, CRASHES, BUGS, for a device with that much power i expect FLAWLESS performance, and not to f*cking crash!! Sense crashes constantly (i only get a week or two without crashes if i factory reset the phone, but i dont think that is the point of having such a powerhouse!)
Apps are buggy, there will always be something, im not saying it happens always but it IS HAPPENIG, today Gtalk wouldnt start, it kept returning to the menu (solution:close background data, open gtalk, it will prompt u sth, enable background and it works) but guys this stuff shouldnt be happening at all.
I am a DIE HARD iOs hater, but dammit, that thing newer has lags/crashes/bugs... It just... Works.. f*uck.. i hate to say that but its, true, it just works
(And the roms and stuff are great, but still there isnt any rom that is 110% working)
I hope things will change in the future, or i will start considering to shift to the Cupertino based company..

It sounds like you have a faulty phone. Why dont you get it replaced under warrenty?

I've read posts here, and contacted support, they told me that sadly, that was normal. Here is the article on engadget regarding the topic (it is short and worth reading )

Flash a no-sense rom in that case or try an ICS rom with sense. ARHD seems to be a popular one. Just don't give up that quickly

Ill give the stock ICS a go in a week/two, after that ill start flashing and hopefully it will be better..

I'm with hungry81. Faulty phone. That is not normal and if support tells you that is normal, I say you tell them that if that is normal, it is unacceptable and you want your money back. My sensation does non of these things. It did shut off on me today, but I've had it since September, and this is the first time it's done that to me using stock ROM. It could be a corrupted memory card. I had my defy get real fussy like that, so a backed up and reformatted the sd card, then loaded everything back on, and have had no problems since.

How bout WP7
Well, if you don't get your problem dealt with, might I recommend a WP7 phone? Spec wise it is inferior to Android, but many ppl don't realize that a 1GHz single core is plenty of power to drive a WP7 phone. The GUI is as smooth as butter, no lags, crashes, etc. You should really try one of these phones and see what I'm talking about. And since it is being continually developed, it will probably catch up to iOS and Android in the specs department. But AGAIN, I stress that these phones don't need all that power. Try one out and you'll see what I mean

I think it might be that fual core chip, if I had to guess.

I would try the non sense ROMs.

Yeah, your best bet is to ditch sense, and go with stock. Therefore your problem isn't actually android, but HTC..
Sent from my Desire HD using Tapatalk

I have an epic 4g touch (samsung galaxy S II line)..and i've had none of the problems you've described.
Maybe you should try a non-HTC Sense phone before condemning the entire Android OS? It's not like it's HTC Sense or the highway. There's AOSP, Touchwiz, Motoblur, etc...lots of options.

The saddest part is that I've bought the sensation MAINLY because of HTC sense.. it was the only reason I didn't go sgs2, so removing sense would be like, an uttermost humiliating defeat for me...
I will try all the stuff u said and keep u posted with the progress by updating this thread...
Oh and seriously guys u know what I was talking about, I am not criticising android, Iove it with all my heart, but iOS is the most stable thing I have ever seen. Did u ever hear of it crashing or lagging? No.. and that goes for ipads, macs, etc, again, as much as I hate apple and that scumbag Steve Mobs, I really envy that aspect they have... :/

Post of the week
Onto the issue at hand, a lot of reviews for the Sensation report unexplained lag. Other dual core and similar spec'd phones don't lag like the Sensation does. If i had to guess it would be an improper build of HTC Sense.
Try a nonsense ROM can help. Get ADW launcher and beautiful widgets and you will hardly notice a difference. ICS should be able to offer other improvement. Most alpha builds reports night and day improvements with ICS.
If you don't want to use a ROM atm, avoid live wallpapers, turn off flash, avoid using too many widgets. Basically everything that makes an Android worth having, avoid until you can figure out the source of the lag.
Get a task manager and see if killing the tasks help, if it does then it is a memory issue either by a rouge app or (again) probably caused by the memory hog that is Sense.

My HTC Vivid on gingerbread + official sense 3.0 and unofficial sense 3.5 is buttery smooth. Just saying.

No idea why everyone is saying use a Senseless ROM, Sense it at fault.
That's utter crap.
Try flashing a custom ROM, you'll find it makes a big improvement to speed and overall reliability

iOS multitasking + other problems
Well, I read that iOS 5 drains a lot of battery for the simplest tasks. On top of that, there are other issues related to web browsing (like crashing browser) and other issues. I'd say look into this before setting your heart on iOS. I mean, it could take them a long time to fix it.
And yeah, a lot of ppl have love for Nokias since they were so good. I'm glad they're making phones with WP7. But for now I'll stick to my HD7
Rootin' for the underdog (WP7)

I am enjoying my Nexus S for the peace of mind it brings: knowing I'm running stock Android and that I'm going to get future updates first.
Having said that, I do wish the experience wasn't marred by issues and glitches (specifically with the random ringtones, and the occasional, yet nevertheless frustrating, screen scrolling and icon issues). I'm looking forward to the next bug fix update. Fixing these issues I predict will go a long way in making me really happy.
I'd like to add: One aspect of the phone, and of Android in general, that I feel sorely about is the keyboard. No matter how one twists it - for example, one might say it's improved over previous Android keyboards, which is true - it pales in comparison to the accuracy and response of Apple's keyboard. This is not to start some immature Apple vs. Google flame war; anyone who has typed extensively on both platforms will understand the difference. It's also a shame Google seems insistent on copying even Apple's mistakes, for example, the lack of customization and custom auto-correct features. I can't wait until Blindtype is implemented. It's sorely needed.

I don't understand your keyboard issue? Will you elaborate? I have used an iPhone extensively and still can't figure out how to make it do Swype...
Regarding your glitches, I recommend an exchange - I have none of those issues...
I use NS rotate with MT4 on main line (has 4g web attached), but I may upgrade 3rd line to preferred 4G web in order to use along with MT4.
NS and MT4 are great phones, and probably they're the best phones for T-Mobile so far.
IMHO I think its common for new phones to have some sort of fault, its not perfect but of sure is a great device.

I'd agree. I was an iphone user for nearly 4 years and it is one of the most difficult parts of switching to Android. The iphone keyboard did seem to be much more accurate (Or maybe after years of typing on it, i was just REALLY used to it). I did originally download the swiftkey keyboard, which seemed easier to get used to originally but i had a problem with SMS that could not be solved any other way but a factory restore. And since then i've given the stock keyboard a bit more of a chance and after a couple of weeks i have to say it's not nearly as bad as i originally thought.
Love it just like did the nexus one
Great phone

Ironically, i'm still spending more quality time with my I9000M than with the Nexus S
the SNS works out of the box, almost perfectly, there is no major flaw, nothing to FIX
in the other hand the SGS it is full of PROBLEMS, and in a weird twist of thing, it's fun to FIX it
it'll be horrible though if that was your only phone, and you need it for business.
as a DEV toy, it's fund
I can finally go all out, trying all kind of crazy things on the SGS to fix it, and make it work better, now that I've got a reliable SNS to use for my daily business
I love my phone too! I can't wait for the development to get to a point where the N1 is. I love modding my phone, I just wish I knew how to do some development myself.
The only thing that made me regret the purchase was the HD2 getting NAND two days after I bought it.

I suppose everyone's experience is different, but I find when typing on an iPhone (or even an iPod), the keyboard response and speed is superior to Android's - I find myself typing far more confidently. (Anybody else constantly type "km" when trying to type "I'm" with stock Android keyboard?)
I'm using Smart Keyboard Pro already, and it is indeed a step up from stock Android keyboard. However, it seems to not be optimized for Gingerbread. I've reached out to the developer but haven't heard from him yet. It seems to especially miss space bar taps, so I'll often get words likethis; it also seems to miss really fast presses, especially when letters are close to each other. A common example is "you". I'll try the iPhone emulator keyboard that someone suggested and see how that goes. Thank you.
Edit: It looks like the iPhone keyboard, but it doesn't type like the iPhone keyboard. I'm not sure if this is software related or hardware related, but something about the Nexus S screen is almost too sensitive - you can hover your finger over the screen and it'll register presses; this might be making the typing experience worse than it should be. I don't know. I'll stick to Smart Keyboard Pro, which is as responsive as it gets typing on Android. Plus, it has no-brainer features which I don't understand why Google/Apple don't implement into their stock keyboards (like custom auto-correct - this feature goes miles in improving typing; or long pressing for second key symbols).

Favorite part about your rom

This is not a best rom question, but I'm curious what subjectively is your favorite and why? Every Rom thread seems to have at least one person chiming in with "tried them all, this is the best" comment, but surely there are some roms that just don't work out for people.
I'm running miui right now, and I love the level of customization and the little tweaks. One of my favorite features is turning on the flashlight from the lock screen, just a little tweak, but so useful. I also really liked honeysense, but I couldn't get it to stop sucking my battery 5% every hour. What do you all think?

I like cm7 for tweaking the auto brightness settings, customizing the power widgets in the notification bar, and customizing the haptic feedback settings.

When I was looking into buying a phone, I told the guy I was waiting for the iphone5 before making a decision. He then told me that's stupid because no matter what, you're still stuck with ios. I was a little offended because I had jailbroken my iphone and had tweaked it with lockinfo, five icon dock, sb settings, themed with winterboard and more. I showed him my phone thinking I would shut him up, and then he replied that I was half way to android. I couldn't believe this, but the more research I did, I realized that even jailbroken, I was still not able to do everything I wanted to on my phone.
One of the biggest reasons I went Inspire over Atrix was the number of Roms available and the XDA support was much better. On a spec sheet, the Atrix has Inspire beat in almost every category, but I believe the user experience is better on Inspire. Can't be happier.
Finally, for those of you on Virtuous Unity, how would you compare that ROM with RCmix3D? I really liked RC, so I'm wondering what the differences are.

I keep hearing about the RCMix ROM. I will put that one on the list. One issue some of us did find the last day or so is we are not able to connect adb. Weird. I am just waiting for my phone to charge to 100% and I am going to re-flash the ROM full wipe with no apps restore in an effort to see if the issue is the ROM or something in my settings.
Edit" This was fixed with a full un-install / re-install of the Android SDK. Wjy the previous install worked on other ROM's and not this one is unknown. Totally enjoying Virtuous OC'd at 1.4M. I have delved into the built it CPU frequency management scheme and it blows away cheesy CPU apps. Totally elegant.
Running LeeDroid v3.2.1 with full sense 3.0/3D add-on and it's arguably the best rom I've ran to date. The battery isn't the greatest but I keep it plugged in at my desk for the most part so it isn't really an issue for me. I love the visual aspects and animations of this rom like the 3D UI/3D widgets, the lock screen with the Lord of the Rings modded ring and the Photo grid widget.

I was on gingerbeast for a good two weeks, and it is a great rom. The one thing that I couldn't get over was the lack of tap to focus on the camera. as i know,cm7 and the miui are the most rocking rom in android, but im wondering that why our sensation forum is not ?isn't cm7 performance can beat over sense?
CM7 and Miui are great add-on fir Sensation, I buy HTC for Sense UI ,smooth scrolling, great email apps, navigation and great widget. Screw those who said Sense is slow. If I want AOSP I would've get Samsung. To me AOSP sux balls and boring.

i've tried both and didn't like them at all
here's the bottom line. Sense is cooler looking (except the ICS sense 3.5, to me it looks like ****. seriously. wtf. ). It IS slower. People who said it isn't are in denial. Sense is just really heavy due to the framework and ****.
Aosp is boring. as EpSix said. but, it's fast. muuuuch faster than any sense rom. Doesn't matter what "aosp" rom it is. CM7, MIUI, CM9. It's all faster than sense. Problem is it doesn't look as good out of the box. The customizations are endless when a stable build comes out. Just take CM7 + ADW Launcher + Theme chooser. it's heaven.

Its also super fast now on this rom Elegancia 2.1.6, maybe not quite up to Aosp speed, but close enough.

I'm sorry if I have offended you in any way, but I am a more minimalistic person. I do not like fancy neon colors. to me it's an eye sore. but that's what sense gives. so I guess my point wasn't valid. it's up to the user, but to me it's ****.

I just seen it as a way to show off my device, and what can be done with sense. And the fact that you say sence is cooler looking.
Everbody has the on way, other wise we would all be using the same rom, like sheep.
The only thing that i dont get. Is why people buy HTC to use Aosp roms.
Im sorry if my post came across as being a little agressive.
Steve
I bought HTC because it was between the Sensation and the S2. The S2 woud've cost me 65,000won vs the Sensation's 56-57,000won. (In Korea, you don't buy the phone outright unless you want to drop 850,000won. So you pick a plan and a phone and pay off the phone in installments.)
I liked Sense but wanted ICS already so I flashed a custom ROM.

Why shouldn't they? Unless you buy a Nexus device you're going to get a manufacturer GUI, whether it's Sense with HTC, Touchwiz with Samsung, Blur with Motorola, etc.

The nasty clock. The ****ty outerglow on all the icons, the ****e textured background and the horrendous weather icons.
Installed CM7 and MIUI and never looked back. ICS is awesome too!
the last good Sense was 3.0, which is why I'm still on it. 3.5 and 3.6 feel clunky and I haven't met anyone who prefers the soft gray over 3.0s hard grays and blacks.
AOSP roms offer the best battery life and smoothest experience, but there aren't any rock solid ones for the Sensation yet.
as for MIUI, it has always been very slow and laggy. maybe if it were GPU accelerated, but no goddamn way is that going back on my phone.
Sense for apps and widgets.
Miui for iphone look
Aosp for plain look

Sense UI sucks!
First of all the calendar app doesn't even show titles of events on the boxes(you have to click on them to see it), which is USELESS if you use calendar. You might as well take an actual, physical wall calendar and just mysteriously draw boxes for all your appointments, because that's all you get with Sense calendar.
Personalize button stuck on the main screen is also retarded lol, who the bloody hell is changing their wallpaper/ringtone that frequently to need it stuck on their main screen! Calm down with the uber personalization, I just want to use my phone!
The USB cable screen is a hulking behemoth of steaming poo, why are there like THIRTY THOUSAND OPTIONS FOR USING A USB CABLE?! The first time I saw it I had to change my undergarments. Stock Android just has "connect to pc" and then.....what do you know? "disconnect from pc."
And on the dialer screen, god help you if you decide to call someone you don't have a photo for. The giant huge ass green Android that pops up on the screen with a white background will blind you and scar your eyes forever with its obnoxious ugly huge size. Jesus phone, calm your ass down, I just want to make a call!
Want to use secure lockscreen? Good luck! You can't even see who's calling you, because they are so desperate that you use their nifty HTC lockscreen. You have to use two lockscreens! What a bunch of ****!
I also always hear people talk about their HTC widgets. Well who the bloody hell in their right mind would want a huge ass clock taking up half the screen? Not to mention you already have a clock(look at the top right corner of your phone) but why buy the Sensation and have a big screen just to put a clock that takes up half the screen on it?! I guess you can look "cool" to your friends, but I prefer a useful home screen!
Not to mention it's LAGGY!
I am currently using CM7, I was using VQ but couldn't stand the reboots. Waiting for a stable CM9 release.

I don't think it's that big a deal. For 'normal' users who may not know about long pressing the home screen and going to the settings Menu it could be fairly useful. Besides, I believe you could re-assign it to something else if you want, at my old Hero could.

Bit big of an exaggeration there ! There's only 5 options (On ICS).
Once again I do think it makes things like Tethering a bit quicker to use. I don't use HTC Sync but I can definitely see why it's on the cable screen, people who use Outlook may need to sync their Calenders every day or so and this just makes it easier.
And on the dialer screen, god help you if you decide to call someone you don't have a photo for. Me! Although, I didn't buy the Sensation just for the clock.

I think it was always quick and smooth, didn't notice any lag on Stock Gingerbread.
With ARHD it's quick, the only thing that could be a bit quicker is the Settings Menu, but it's beta so that's a non issue.

This is my third Android Device. Two of them have been from HTC and the other from Motorola. I buy HTC not because of Sense, it does provide some 'eye candy' but its not for me. I go with HTC because of their great build quality and the fact that they are so developer friendly. With the number of ROMs under development, its hard to not find one that doesn't work for you.
AOSP CAN be boring, but with a few modifications, you can make look just as good as Sense:
Check out ADW EX as a launcher replacement. Tons of themes to choose from and easy to swap out icons.
I use Beautiful Widgets for a 'sense like' clock. IMO, it runs circles around the stock sense clock widget, much more customizable.
I do use the Calendar quite frequently. Pure Grid Calendar Widget is just as good as the sense calendar if not better.
Bottom line: to each their own. Some like a minimal look. Others like a flashy setup. Find what works for you and enjoy it. =D

IF This isn't enough to hold us off 'till unlock I don't know what is!

Slowly but surely we r getting some serious upgrades without s-off or bootloader unlocked. Custom Roms are out now that dont use recovery. I'm scoring 5400 on Quadrant 2nd run with my Overclocked 1.8ghz De bloated, ultra fast rosie, de-odexed, zip aligned, advanced power menu, Free Tether havin themed HOX..This is for sure enough to hold us over till we get a real unlock!! Devs just started doing it like this...
It's only going to get better! Everyone wanting to return their phones because we aren't unlocked yet should think twice! What more do you want in the 3rd week after launch? Most of these new tweaks and roms have come out today. Wait till the end of the week and see how much better this is gonna be..

The devs are certainly doing a great job considering the state of the bootloader.
I'd like to see a CPU spy report of the OC module to see if it's utilizing other clock speeds effectively.
What about a Passmark Performance test? Those seem to be very thorough in their tests.
On my stock HOX I was getting somewhere around 2200-2300.
So, you get this beasty phone that beats all benchmarks, yet you can't do much on it, because everything is being FC...how ironic is that?

I personally havent had any negative effect of the multitasking issues if that is what you are referring to. If you are saying apps are FCing as in having errors, havent had any problems with that either. So what are you talking about? So far i can do everything i want to do, everything i was doing on my sensation which was OC'd to 1.7. it felt like a 5 year old device compared to this one. If it isnt working for you, return it. Its doing fine for me. Best phone i've ever used. The multitasking issue will get fixed. The International version is already significantly better with their first update. I stream music daily in my car and have never had the service stop. i also use minfree and v6superscript which both help the mt woes.

Welcome to XDA! I did have issues before running minfree. I could start a text message, exit with the home button, re-enter the app, and it would start over. Running minfree has resolved this issue. I'm not a big gamer on mobile, but I did test the before and after with Angry Birds Space. Before, it would completely refresh when exiting the app and re-entering, but now I can open several apps before it completely refreshes. It's not perfect, but has made it very tolerable. Also, I have either disabled or removed any of the AT&T or HTC bloat.

I know this isn't the place for this question, but : I know changing bootloaders (if it were unlocked) means you won't get updates from AT&T, but does rooting have the same side effect? Or can you still receive OTA updates from AT&T after rooting?

That I'm not sure about, but you can run the 1.82 RUU again which will remove root and the tampered flag in the bootloader.

When entering landscape and exiting landscape on the LG launcher it force closes for some reason.
Some LG generic icons show till a reboot happens ( first boot only )
LG Music widget isn't working ( looking for an easy fix or removal ).
*Tweaks*
There are some tweaks too like long hold of power while screen is off activates torch.
Pressing the camera button while screen is off and music is playing will pause/play current track.
The rom looks like cm9 other than launcher so I dunno if you would consider it a port lol...

I just want to be sure before I get to deep with it. And like I said I don't have much info other than what's here was pulled from an LG ICS leaked system dump. It was done for the evo shift and I talk to the dev all the time so I'm going to see if I can help him iron out his issues along the way of this one because I also support that phone with a different ROM/kernel. I don't want to get ahead of myself, I'm busy till Sunday but wanted feed back on the idea. In the mean time I'm going to run what I have just to get a feel for it and the bugs it has. Once I get a chance to look at the dump ill be able to see if there are little pieces left out that could/would be causing the force close issues with a couple things. Or they could just be broke that's why its a leak anyways I'm off to bed for a change

Anyways a Work in Progress is already considered as development right? So I don't think that would make it offtopic.

Sense is heavy and bloated. I really hate that about it. What really draws me to this is that its based on Cyanogenmod. CM has really nice tweaks and features, some I've come to feel I can't live without nowadays. I don't think there's a device I could get and not use CM on it. I'd love to take a look at that one myself Strapped. Looks a bit different. Seems to have some visual enhancement to it too but I can't quite put my finger on just what.....maybe something about the app drawer icon shading. And to be honest with you I've always been a bigger fan of CM9 derivatives than the original. No offense to the CyanogenMod team tho..........
Love to see YOU get your hands on this one! :good:
Yeah I def need to figure something out. Its a port from a system dump, to the evo shifts cm9 rom, then ported from that device to ours. Its running the LG launcher and also the motoblur ics launcher. Of course the LG widgets won't run on the MoTo launcher but there are no MoTo widgets. Hopefully I can find parts around the net for both lauchers to be complete(high hopes). I will say its a def change from the standard cm ROM. Last battery only got about 10 hours with 3 hours screen on but I'm thinking all the youtube videos my daughter watched today played a big role in that, so after a full day of running no new bugs have popped up. And since this is gonna get atleast some usage I can have the mod lock/delete this soon and just start a dev thread for the ROM once I get it up

That already sounds VERY promising! I'd be happy to apply as an "Orkin Man" on the project for you if you need anyone. It looks to be a VERY different ROM from what any of us are used to seeing!

It sounds to me like you're juggling chainsaws right now.....even more than I realized. I don't know how you keep it all straight in your head! When I take on more than one project at a time it reaaally messes with me.
Anyway, just wanted to let you know how much we appreciate yours and the other developers time & efforts that call the DS "home". And I also understand that even though you have a perfectionist living inside you, this is a very nice ROM even with the few issues that are haunting you. I guess I've just gotten used to using a few very easy workarounds to the point I hardly notice them anymore. When you decide to, this is going to be one that people like myself appreciate more than some others will. Being that, there really is a minority group of us that just likes the derivative ROMs generated from the CyanogenMod code really better than the "original" in most cases. Even though it's mostly just a launcher change in your mind....this is definately one of the ROMs. :good:

Well in that case..... I got some cabinets to hang today, and measure to downsize a Window and once that's done I'll upload.......
And the bigger issues I can see coming faster than I could have imaged. I have a windows hd now thanks to you. And it will boot up just fine with the slave attached, but Linux will no longer boot with thee slave attached, it actually freezes because I have to hit esc to enter my boot menu to choose what drive to boot :banghead:

I'm glad to hear that! And very soon there will be lots of us that will be glad too. I run it on a pretty regular basis myself simply because the things I use regularly do work so well. Besides, over the past couple of months we've had several programmers with varying degrees of abilities move in here with us that I can forsee them wanting to see if they can figure out those very few issues that you really just don't have the time to right now. That is, if you don't mind. We DO have a very healthy community attitude here for the DS ya know.
I wish I knew something to tell you about your slave drive issue though. Would physically setting it to "drive select" instead of "slave" with the jumpers have any affect on it?
