Hi all, I am keen to get a port of CM7 to this phone after having just taken delivery of one. If anyone else has any interest in this and/or has previous experience in porting CM7, I'd be interested in hearing from you!
You will need root and custom recovery first...
Sent from my HTC ChaCha A810e using XDA Premium App
you may want to run z4root first if you have one on hand...
Would be great to have CM7 on the ChaCha; lets hope that DEVS find the ChaCha interesting enough to start creating custom roms ....

any1 managed to root it? want to know before i try ...
I have interest, given that the bootloader is open. Another issue is money, so I guess you won't be seeing me around anytime soon around this parts, but I might buy the device eventually sometime later.
Edit: Try z4root, gingerbreak and superoneclick to root. If you are able to root it, there might be hope for y'all.
Oh yes please, custom mod or something to be able to change the "facebook button" functionality!

Ditto...
A Vanilla rom with Launcher Pro etc and ability to assign button would be amazing.
I love my ChaCha but I think it would be even speedier with a vanilla rom.

Just install Launcher Pro and set it as your default home screen - I have and it's brilliant.

its has a msm7227 so the kernel, give or take the board files, is there
i'm also using launcher pro on my chacha now, much better than sense

If you root the phone somehow, (anyone tried gingerbreak, superoneclick and z4root?) Cm would be possible. A fake recovery hijack could be made, allowing you to retain your real recovery, eliminating the need to have an s-off device. Root it and you'll see cm7.

tried z4 but didnt work ...maybe i did it the wrong way
Had a quick read of Koush's guide to creating a new recovery image - feels fairly doable so I'm going to press on with attempting root. A bit short of time at the moment so it might be a few weeks before I report back...
tried universal root, z4root and gingerbreak - no luck perhaps root via USB then - superOneClick is next up.

Its not possible to root with any of the tools used here.
Just dont Work. What about discussing how to root in one thread, not in all?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1141380
makes sense to use that thread!
I'd like to know if there is any software available to "pre-test" the basic functionality of a self cooked ROM before I flash it and test it on my phone?
Thx for suggestions
Isn't there an android emulator within the sdk? Can't you run rom in that?

Do not know. I'll check that out. Thx.
You can create an AVD - Android Virtual Device - within the dev kit and define different parameters such as SD card size, screen res, hardware options, etc.
Good luck

I've never tried the emulator myself. but, if the VM/emulator that you create has some sort of config files associated with it, then is it possible that you could upload yours? so that we don't all have to go to the same setup process plus that way I'll be able to test my hacked (well edited) version of your great ROM on the emulator and not my precious PHONE!
Thanks
I tried the emulator today. Is it possible that people need to do specific changes in any rom to use it with the emulator? Cause even stock htc roms doesn't boot, but the one that comes with the SDK does?

You won't regret this device, trust me ... It says 800mhz on the box but I run at 1ghz and most shifts are overclockable to 1.8-1.9ghz. Sense isn't too bad either, i.m.o, way better than blur. Look forward to seeing ya around the forums!

Since you are on 2.3.3 you will have to downgrade hboot and root from froyo. The link I posted goes to a post with links. The first link of that post is the one you are looking for...

Like Drob said, to be able to get full s-off you'll have to downgrade your Hboot using one of the above mentioned methods. Or you could upgrade to 2.3.4 and use HTC's half ass unlock tool.

I guess technically you dont have to use sdk/adb.. Im sure you could use terminal to temp root and push the misc.img, then use ShiftRR (an automated root for 2.2.) once you have ruu'ed.

Yes, but in the long run it's going to be better to have all that ISH set up anyway .
Just a question and please dont take it the wrong way, but how does one plan on working on deving/porting miui or anything for that matter without the sdk/adb? I feel it is VERY important to have adb setup.

There's no need to use the unlock bootloader thing from htc, Indirect (over in the dev section) has a root method for 2.3.4 (if you choose to update to 2.3.4 anyway) that doesnt involve using the unlock tools

Well if your taking it to Sprint. Upgrading it to 2.3.4 is probably one of the first things they'll do. Before they even trouble shoot it . if you end up keeping the device, and they upgrade it. you can use the method suggested above. The link is below.

i took it to sprint they didn't give me a new phone sigh... and they did some stupid test whitch i know i could have done myself being a hacker and all.. i noticed phone freezing lagging like crazy my epic at the time was wonderful.. but they didn't upgrade firmware at all.. so i guess how would i upgrade to 3.4 ??
Setting>system updates> firmware update.. rooting does solve all the problems that the phone has

Released this morning. Easy as pie and is working fine for me
Suuweeeet!!
but the bootloader is still locked and we can't flash custom roms right?
Will we be able to flash custom ROMs? Or will we only have root access to our current ROM?
We won't be able to flash custom roms just yet.
But it's great to use some of my favorite apps again now that it's rooted.
This method worked flawlessly on my ATT OneX. Win7 Pro x64...just install HTC drivers, plug in as Debug, and run the root.bat. I didn't have to kill any processes or disable sync or anything.
Only thing to watch out for is that the phone reboots multiple times even after the script stops running( like 4-5 times), so make sure its completely finished and you are at homescreen before you unplug it.

Doesn't the kernel have to support overclocking for it to work? Root is great and all, but without a kernel that supports overclocking SetCPU isn't going to do anything will it?

Are there any skins for our mySense 3.0 roms. I want to do a lot of customizing but I dont wanna do any thing that requires root and stuff like that. If there isn't are there any apk files to make our mytouch devices look newer in the software dept.
I wasn't able to find any. I think the doubleshot got played with this mySense crap. It sucks so bad its not even funny. If we could have gotten Sense 2.1 I would have been happy because that's far more capable than anything I've seen a dev do with mySense. Just my 2cents though

It is because of the Genius system. From the original MyTouch, the whole line incorporated the Genius system, which is a modified (and more powerful) version of Dragon Naturally Speaking. HTC and Nuance developed Genius, with HTC modifying Sense to provide hooks for Genius to work with, giving it many more capabilities than it could have by being just a slap-on app. That is why you can't take Genius and just install it on another phone, the necessary hooks in Sense aren't there.
So I guess the answer is no. I also want to ask will gingerbreak work on this device? If not is there a good one click root app for our device?

The only way I know to root this phone is by getting S-Off, or S-ON Unlocked. Then flashing a SU Zip.

I installed HTC Sync to get the drivers
I used HTC's unlocker steps found here:
http://htcdev.com/bootloader/
I used Hasoon's little PC app to get the clockwork recovery, root, and to flash superuser. It's not the only way, and it's not much easier than other ways, but the app has useful instructions in it that helped a bit.
I used fastboot to flash kernals that I pulled from rom zips, and ROM Manager to flash the actual rom. Rom manager first, then fastboot.
here are some useful links;

http://theunlockr.com/2011/09/09/ho...mobile-mytouch-4g-slide-revolutionary-method/ (all links for fre3vo are dead, so use hasoons app. revolutionary doesn't work for newest hboot so S-ON unlocked flashing is only possible.)

The original MyTouch was AOSP, it shared everything with the G1 except for more internal memory and RAM.
The MyTouch 3G slide was the first to use the Genius button (never used it when I had it).

Just an FYI.....the standard Revolutionary method is only 3 steps and very simple. If you take that plunge, there are dozens of people here that are more than willing to help you out.
I've tried the Rev Method twice and still didn't work and I need to know the meaning of flashing something and I want to use a live wallpaper from sense 4. What I really want is the HTC One S but as you all can tell I have a two year contract....so I want to get my phone as close as possible to sense 4 and that's what I will do. I will try doing that SU zip thing and then see what happens if not I guess imma just rely on apks and widgets and WidgetLocker

Try using different launchers. Golauncher is free, and has tons of themes(like skins) to choose from, and doesn't need root.
