[Q] What is a Good Entry-Level Android? - General Questions and Answers

Carrier isn't too much of a factor, but I'd prefer Verizon if at all possible. By entry-level I mean free or as close to free as possible.
Thanks for any help.

That all depends on what sales are going on.
Entry level could be a few different things. I find some androids easier to use then others, but if you are simply looking for free. I think the best out there right now is this one.

My first Android was an Optimus T on T-Mobile that was almost free at the time.

I'm with FaultException - I have the "T" and it's been 99.9% flawless for over a year. Plenty of features to keep me happy. Considered rooting it but then lost the urge because for me, it just works. Bonus: with a 2-yr contract, the device was free after two rebates. I have no complaints.

If budget is a limiting factor you can find very good deals on Ebay. I'd never buy a new phone.

Lol seriously. I wouldn't it do it either. I'm just going to wait for the subsidized price by ATT, then it'll definitely be worth it.

Rofl. At least there is one sane person in this subsection (IMO)
Make that 3, aint no freakin way im paying 1g for any phone, I dont care if it wipes my butt for me and calls me daddy.
Im waiting for my 6800 to really take a dump or accidentally get coughranoverbymytruckcough and then exchange it and pay the balance or something like that. To shell out that kind of money, albeit for a gnarly phone is just way out of line.
$1078 in the US at smart-mobile-gadgets.com

I gave up boozin', womanizing, sniffing glue, and my Chevy Suburban to get mine. Just the $1500 a month I'm saving on Petro alone made it affordable!

Depends on the company you're ordering from, usually you don't have to pay VAT for export phones. But you'll still have to pay the 7% gst at the customs if you declare it to be more than 400 sgd.
You intending to get one from where?

Was thinking of getting one either from the UK or expansys HK. Emailed expansys HK last week and the staff said that even though its not on the website yet, its available for pre-order and stock should be in by tomorrow (18/08/2008) its going for HK$7000. Shipping will be another HK$150 to Singapore. Are you from Singapore too?
You guys are also impatient lawl. Those of you in the US, can get a AT&T Fuze soon enough for about $550/$650 w/o contract.

Non- Commitment pricing.

Anyone know what the price is going to be without contract?
I contacted an AT&T retail store and they didn't really know, but had read that Samsung posted $350 dollars on facebook. That seems low to me.
I haven't seen any pricing for non-commitment anywhere. Thanks!
+1
I would also want to know, because I'm planning on buying it with no contract.

Hopefully this is the actual price since a few people are able to confirm it with a few AT&T reps.

$700+ on ebay!!!!!
I had my iPhone 4 since it came out (16 gb) and used it the whole time.
I just put it on craigslist and sold it for 600 in less than a day.
Now, I have money for the captivate!!!
What kind of fees would AT&T charge you for the switch? If it really is $350, I'll do the same
Yes! The price is $350 without contract! That's very nice, I'll check tomorrow my local AT&T store to see if they have any in stock already as some people already bought it.
I'd love to go get one tomorrow, but I go to an authorized retailer and there is one person in particular that I deal with. She's always treated me well, and they are a lot nicer than AT&T retail stores. She is out of town until monday I guess I'll be waiting for my phone 'til then.
The one thing I know nothing about is how to load custom roms, as this is my first open source phone! (first had symbian, then iOS) I am excited to see what else is out there.
If its only $350. I'll be buying this Phone off Contract ASAP.
Even tought i wanted an HTC or Motorola. Device ie nexus one, desire. This will do, since my G1 keeps overheating and is on its last legs.
There's people been buying them since yesterday for $350 off contract, so the pricing is real.
wow $350?!...hard to believe really when the tmo version is $499.

I just returned from AT&T here they let me handle the phone. He showed me the price of the off contract phone as $300.00. He was shocked, but it was right there in living color. They will sell me one this Saturday morning. I will be there.

If this pricing is the same here in Arizona Ill be posting my HD2 for sale, use that money to buy a Captivate, and use my phone upgrade for an Iphone4, turn around and sell that beast as well.. Should come out wayyyyyyyyyyyy on top. Good god what a good deal. Thank you AT&T for getting something right.
Good luck to all who seem to be going down this cash flow road. Wooooop!
@willthebill - I am surprised that the Captivate is going to be 350 when the one for t-mobile is 500 as well! I am quite excited about it!

Hello

Hey guys. Anyone buy this phone outright and is now having it hit you in the chest. I still can't believe I paid 650 after taxes for this phone. I Love it and all but WOW!
Sent from my thunder....BOLT!
I paid full retail for mine, no regrets on my end. I'm glad I did loving it so far.
Agreed it is the best investment I have ever done. But everyone is like wow.. why.. then I say. Why did you pay 600 dollars for clothes.. ha. I don't know. Still feels weird. I have never paid this much for a phone.
Sent from my thunder....BOLT!
I really did it as I couldn't convince myself not to in order to get on 4G at the ground floor... I'm a bit of an early adopter (I have a HD-DVD player). But I really wanted to get on 4G while it was costing the same as 3G w/ unlimited data. But yeah hard to justify to most people.
Even in my case as I research involves smartphones it's a bit of a hard sale for some people to understand how having a newer device helps make my research seem more applicable as it's not being built on a 1-5 year old device.

SUB $100 Tablet for NETFLIX

I'm looking for a Sub $100 tablet that does netflix
Need it by fathers day so i'm overnighting it ($3.99 thanks to Amazon PRIME)
It's for my step dad. My mom has a kindle (not fire) and she loves it, but my step-dad doesn't even have a phone and has been wanting an android forever.
We can't afford the fire, I actually only wanted to spend about $40 and my mom is chipping in $40 but i can go up to $100 total
Really need something that plays netflix without lagging horribly.
http://www.amazon.com/AVS-Multi-Touch-Capacitive-A10-Android/dp/B006IOA9Z8/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top
This looks very promising but a lot of people said netflix had audio lag.
If there is anything else please let me know!
Thanks!

That may be worth it despite not having a camera.. if it plays netflix! lol
If he wanted an Android, get him a phone and have him pay his data charges. Lol.

xoom network locking/barring question.

Evening all, apologies for the probably noobish question but i've done a fair amount of searching and have to give in and just ask.
My younger brother got a xoom (32gb wi-fi and 3g) on contract in the uk with three, he then neglected to pay the bill entirely.
My question to you good folks is as follows...
Can three network bar it as they could with a mobile handset who's bill remained unpaid?
If i offer to pay off his contract as the helpful, older, wiser, better looking brother and then, confiscate his tablet and sell it to recoup my huge outlay - can anyone tell me if im going to get an angry winning ebay bidder messaging me to say that it doesn't work with their sim card as its been barred/blocked etc etc??
is there anyway i can check on the actual device?, at the minute it just comes up with "no sim" although the wi-fi works fine as you'd expect.
I just want rid of it, and to have my bank balance drained as little as possible before i send photos of my brother to every retailer asking them to politely remove him from their store.
Thanks for any help that you guys can provide.
kinny
Not to be a bummer but if you did pay off his contract you probably still have a huge dent in your wallet even after selling it. Probably best bet is to just keep with the contract and keep the XOOM since it is a decent device. I know that you want to sell it but I doubt you could sell it for all that much. And if you did pay off the contract your tablet should be unlocked so I doubt people would complain if they are blocked.
Just pop-in a different SIM to check if you still get a no-SIM error.

Nah i do agree in principle but I've already got 2 laptops assorted work and home phones and an ipad so the last thing i need is another bit of kit that'll turn into a paper weight, any money back from selling is better than none as i'm resigned to paying off his bill regardless under the understanding that the device becomes mine in exchange for his credit history not becoming ruined at the age of 18.
If i paid it off it'd be over a few months rather than in a lump sum just not the remaining 17 months thats left as i want it gone and off my mind asap!
they seem to be going for £200 plus on ebay which is £200 more than if i put it in the drawer and forgot about it.
Cheers for the reply though matey, much appreciated.

The simplest solutions are usually best and in this reply i think you've just epitomised that! Will try this asap.
I still wonder if they can actually be blocked/barred though?

Hmm I see, if you want to get rid and don't mind losing a bit of money, I suppose paying it off as soon as possible and selling it will be wise. And no it won't be barred or blocked if everything works out fine. Don't know about changing ownership, lol first I heard of that but you probably have to discuss it with three. Just curious, why did your brother grab that device knowing he can't pay for it? It would've been better if he just brought it outright if you asked me.
