SUB $100 Tablet for NETFLIX - General Questions and Answers

I'm looking for a Sub $100 tablet that does netflix
Need it by fathers day so i'm overnighting it ($3.99 thanks to Amazon PRIME)
It's for my step dad. My mom has a kindle (not fire) and she loves it, but my step-dad doesn't even have a phone and has been wanting an android forever.
We can't afford the fire, I actually only wanted to spend about $40 and my mom is chipping in $40 but i can go up to $100 total
Really need something that plays netflix without lagging horribly.
http://www.amazon.com/AVS-Multi-Touch-Capacitive-A10-Android/dp/B006IOA9Z8/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top
This looks very promising but a lot of people said netflix had audio lag.
If there is anything else please let me know!
Thanks!

This one is actually an Archos brand for $10 more and has a 1ghz cpu 512mb ram
HOLY DAMN!
Found this one, $99 for a 1Ghz DUAL CORE and 1GB RAM!

But it ships in 2 months
I think it's good enough i'll buy it and print him a picture and say BE HERE IN A MONTH LOL
That may be worth it despite not having a camera.. if it plays netflix! lol

If he wanted an Android, get him a phone and have him pay his data charges. Lol.

Non- Commitment pricing.

Anyone know what the price is going to be without contract?
I contacted an AT&T retail store and they didn't really know, but had read that Samsung posted $350 dollars on facebook. That seems low to me.
I haven't seen any pricing for non-commitment anywhere. Thanks!
+1
I would also want to know, because I'm planning on buying it with no contract.

AT&T Hi Mark - the Captivate is $199.99 w/ contract, and $349.99 without.

Hopefully this is the actual price since a few people are able to confirm it with a few AT&T reps.
OMG if this is the price for the phone I am definitely getting this phone off contract and using my upgrade for another phone aka iPhone 4 to sell for a profit!!!!!!!!!!

$700+ on ebay!!!!!
I had my iPhone 4 since it came out (16 gb) and used it the whole time.
I just put it on craigslist and sold it for 600 in less than a day.
Now, I have money for the captivate!!!
What kind of fees would AT&T charge you for the switch? If it really is $350, I'll do the same
Yes! The price is $350 without contract! That's very nice, I'll check tomorrow my local AT&T store to see if they have any in stock already as some people already bought it.
I'd love to go get one tomorrow, but I go to an authorized retailer and there is one person in particular that I deal with. She's always treated me well, and they are a lot nicer than AT&T retail stores. She is out of town until monday I guess I'll be waiting for my phone 'til then.
The one thing I know nothing about is how to load custom roms, as this is my first open source phone! (first had symbian, then iOS) I am excited to see what else is out there.
If its only $350. I'll be buying this Phone off Contract ASAP.
Even tought i wanted an HTC or Motorola. Device ie nexus one, desire. This will do, since my G1 keeps overheating and is on its last legs.
There's people been buying them since yesterday for $350 off contract, so the pricing is real.
wow $350?!...hard to believe really when the tmo version is $499.
http://www.t-mobile.com/shop/phones/Cell-Phone-Detail.aspx?cell-phone=Samsung-Vibrant
wait and see 3 more days...
I just returned from AT&T here they let me handle the phone. He showed me the price of the off contract phone as $300.00. He was shocked, but it was right there in living color. They will sell me one this Saturday morning. I will be there.

If this pricing is the same here in Arizona Ill be posting my HD2 for sale, use that money to buy a Captivate, and use my phone upgrade for an Iphone4, turn around and sell that beast as well.. Should come out wayyyyyyyyyyyy on top. Good god what a good deal. Thank you AT&T for getting something right.
Good luck to all who seem to be going down this cash flow road. Wooooop!
@willthebill - I am surprised that the Captivate is going to be 350 when the one for t-mobile is 500 as well! I am quite excited about it!

I am not amused by your phones performance
New ones in the box seem to go for around 300 on ebay still.
So i'll sell mine for $250 shipped. $475 for the pair. They are att&t. But also one of the easiest phones ever to unlock. I'm glad to do it for anyone that wants it done before shipping. At the moment they've never been out the box.

Not sure how to respond. Because your absolutely correct. No one has any reason to trust me what so ever. And theres no way to change that. But my options are this or ebay. They have lost tons of value as it is because of the length of time I've had them. I'm sure I could get 500 on ebay, but by the time I pay their fee and paypal s fee for the money transfer and the shipping cost I might have 425 left. If you've sold on ebay then u know. And we all know what they cost so the thought of selling a brand new galaxy s for $212.50 seemed crazy. Wasn't sure what to do. I dont need the money but they'll be worth nothing if I continue to hold on to them. Its ok if u dont trust me.

Try Amazon.
Why not try Craigslist?
Just bought a second one for my wife. I'll keep these until the Galaxy Note has been out for a month or two. Loving that 5.3 inch SAMOLED. No reason to go to the SGS2 that I can see. It is awesome, but not that much better than the Captivate.

Sure there is. I havnt sold in a couple years(another reason why I shy away, so much has changed) but i remember paying an extra .25 just to have a pic posted during search. Extra charges if you use alotta pictures. And the charge just to post, and the extra if you sell your item. Things of that sort. My accounts havnt been activated in a while. I went back to paypal the other day just to update that accout. New bank and such. Because i bought a few accesories for the captivate I use now. If the person thats interested perhaps lives in southern VA or northern NC maybe we could meet. I live on the line midway (Halifax County, VA) Or if there is someone you really trust on the forum I could send the item to the first. And when they get it they can let you know. Then I could recieve my payment. Of course it would have to be someone of high standing. I would hate to get ripped off myself. Just know I'm not here to scam anyone. I could take pics of the items if it helps. At least you'd know I actually have them. Beside a printout of this post so you know i didnt just copy a picture from the web. I'm trying here guys. I'm an honest person. I dont care if I sell them now. I guess now I'm just trying to build a little trust.

[Q] Advice on cheap tablet for child

My 9-year-old daughter really wants a tablet, and I'm considering getting her one of the ultra cheap ones that's floating around, especially in this cyber-sale week. She doesn't have the best history of caring for her things, so I don't want to spend more than $100 on something she'll likely break sooner than I'd like to know. I recognize this means I'll end up with junk, but I'm trying to filter the junk.
My main concerns are having at least Android 2.1, and the ability to hopefully hack the genuine Market onto it, although I'll settle for the Amazon Appstore. Being able to do all the basic things without being horrific at it would also be very nice.
Does anyone have a specific model they could point to? I'm seeing some Velocity Microsos and Pandigitals on sale, along with some cheap no-names from sites like ahappydeal.com, but I'm trying to make an informed decision.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
.

DealExtreme.com have a lot of Android items. Just be sure to read the reviews. They may be extremely cheap but there are limitations. I use the website to buy cheap gadgets as gifts for my friends lol. But yea, if you need a simple Android tablet with a certain spec give them a try.

Yeah, I already buy a lot of things from there, but was hoping I might find someone who has more direct experience with a specific model.
I'd run up to Walmart, Staples, Office Max, or Radio Shack and see what they have in regards to e-readers. Velocity Cruz Micro is one I believe is sub $100 one at my local Radio Shack. Find one that you like for the price and then see if your able to load the market, or better yet a custom rom.
When your looking in the less than $100 catagory, that's probably your best bet. They're at least made with some care for the consumer in mind, where as an elcheepo china model isn't.

I've not seen anything there in a price point below the Nook Color you're writing from. Certainly no sub-$100 Android tablets. Or has their inventory changed recently?
Well Fry's, BestBuy or Office Max will probably be your best bet to get the feel. Read some reviews on NewEgg or something xD
Oh my bad sub $100. No go with retail stores. Definitely Ebay or DealExtreme. Hard to imagine local stores selling anything cheaper than that.

Ah, thanks for the clarification!
Yes, I was looking at the Velocity Cruz units that were on sale on 1SaleADay today, but as I dug into reviews I wasn't liking what I saw. Some really odd limitations and compatibility issues that concerned me. Left me thinking they'd be no less of a frustration than the Chinese ones from the descriptions. Might not be accurate, but that's why I was hoping for people with some real-world experience who did some of the hacking themselves.
Well, I can't help you there, but I can tell you with these cheep units that your experience will almost be gauranteed to be a crapshoot. It might work for me, it might work for you, it might not. I'll dig around the net and see what I can find for you though. I'll report back in the morning, I gotta get some rest for the night.

Really appreciate the assistance. I've done some research of my own, too. I'd love to get her something really good, but I just know for a fact that if I do I'll get a call a week after Christmas that she left it out in the snow, or her dog chewed it up, or something. But I also don't want to get something that will frustrate her enough to CAUSE that.
Wasn't there a £30 7" tablet floating around eBay with a capacitive touch screen running 2.1 Eclair? I'm sure somebody mentioned it on these forums a while back and a few members bought one for family members, might be worth a look there.
Good luck finding one.
Well, most of what I'm finding is Chinese ones that break the hundred dollar mark after shipping and what not. The ones that stay below that either turn to vaporware or are ungodly aweful.

While I agree, which was my concern, if I go above that point it's both prohibitively expensive and a really stupid move on my part. I know her well enough to be shocked if this thing survives more than six months. If it does, then I can consider putting real money toward a good one for her. But this is basically a test run both of her responsibility and of how into it she really is.

First Rt pre-order

Samsung is first to offer Windows Rt
http://www.knowyourmobile.com/blog/1613638/windows_rt_samsung_ativ_tab_up_for_preorder.html
Sending from HTC Radar
That's a fair chunk more than I was hoping.
This in my opinion is MS's last chance to get a slice of the mobile market with their W8 Eco system.
With their partners charging that much, I don't hold up much hope.
I was in hopes, RT would be a touch lower in price. Seeing this amount does take some of my excitement away!!!!!
It has me on a rethink........
Maybe my best option is to snag a used W500 tablet and upgrade the O/S to Win8. Use the money I save to buy a pocket battery extender for use on long trips.
Sent from my HTC Radar at work, on company time and WiFi =)

they really screwed themselves with pricing.
I'm seriously considering an Atom version right now since I don't think I'll need a Core CPU.
I haven't seen a Surface Atom version mentioned, but I hope they will exist since I think the form factor is pretty sweet.
The next few weeks should be pretty interesting, once reviews/prices/comparisons are released.

the two posts directly above mine that you quoted also were a little surprised at the price. after a little thought, it would be a very good idea to only sell these wp8/surface devices in the Microsoft stores: customers won't be able to see the 1/4 priced droid tablets or 2/3 prices I pads ( that everyone thinks is the second coming) and limit the leaching to other platforms.

we'll see fairly soon how consumers feel about the pricing. the hardware is g r e a t, so I doubt that will be any reason for poor sales. pricing is sooooo cut throat in tab markets.

too good to be true? 2048x1536, quad-core, 2gb ram

is this too good to be true?, there is a wholesaler at aliexpress website selling a 1000 piece lot of the onda v972 (9.7" 2048x1536 display, quad-core, 2gb ram, 4.1 jelly bean, microsd, hdmi out) for under $8 a piece! that is ridiculous.. i could sell this tablet in the states for around $60 in the USA and it would sell like hot cakes and still make a boat load.. that means i would sell 1000 tablets X $60 = $60k and i only had to invest around $8k usd! by the way, these tablets don't sell any lower than $240 anywhere! so is this for real or a scam? i had bought a tablet from that website before so i know some of the sellers are legit. here is the link aliexpress.com/item/NEW-Model-Onda-V972-Quad-core-Tablet-PC-9-7-IPS-Allwinner-A31-Quad-core-CPU/806314099.html

I don't know about that man, seems to good to be true.
Anyone can tell that $8 isn't going to remotely cover the hardware costs.
Ask yourself, unless they get sexual pleasure on hemorrhaging over $200 per unit, why would they sell for that price ? It makes no sense. Even when you buy in bulk you need to cover your costs of production and this just seems ridiculous.
Why are they such humanitarians that they want to run a business at an astounding loss ? Are they just that nice that their only desire is to let other people make money while they go into the red ?
They claim they are sending you a 44lb package that is roughly 13x13x5. Do you really think that 1000 tablets are going to fit in that ? Just do some basic math.

God knows how that tablets will be working... May be they will die on the next day, and you will end up with a bunch of angry customers
thanks for the input guys, but after having a long chat with the seller i discovered he is most likely a scam, because he insisted on only accepting western union and paypal (in which i would not have buyer protection with either method since i was transacting outside of a website ie. ebay etc.) although he emailed me invoices trying to prove me wrong, i still doubted him.. I then told him, "what if i go to china and buy these 1000 tablets from you in person?" and his reply was "yes, please you are very welcome to come to china and do business" hahaha i left it at that.

This is the most sensible option. If it arrives and is even halfway decent, everybody is happy.
Then you just need 8K to drop on a container load of em.

The seller could always be clever and send you a $50 tablet (so you think, "hey this isn't that great but I could at least make a profit") to get you interested and then have you spend $8000 on a box of paper or dog droppings or something.
