I just bought the asus transformer, I primarily use it to surf the net. I dont need all the asus apps like mycloud, mynet.. etc. Is it safe to uninstall them? and if I do will I be able to get them back if I do a factory reset in case i need them in the future?
Any help would be appreciated, Thanks.
You need to root your tablet to remove system apps.
First of all, I don't know if you are aware of the fact that you will need root privileges to uninstall stock apps. If you're not and you don't have a lot of experience with rooted android devices I would recommend to get along with them - you probably don't want to make your warranty void already.
Otherwise I believe - anyone correct me if I'm wrong - it should be safe to remove mycloud or mynet. But be sure to make a backup with titanium first.
Anyhow I think both apps I mentioned are very useful and you normally pay for functions like splashtop viewer
if you are rooted , you can run the KRAKD rom and it will give you the option to remove all or just certain ones,
thats what i am using
root and titanium backup

Keep in mind that removing asus apps can cause problem when applying the ICS update (it won't update).
(I read this somewhere in prime forum)

I installed an app from the market but can't uninstall it. The program is PressReader. Does anyone have trouble with this app. And how do I go about deleting it off the device completely?
Pressreader is a pre-installed app so it sounds like you have mistaken updating it from the market as installing a fresh version. You can't uninstall /remove pre-installed apps in the rom unless you have rooted your device.

Really...ypu possitive it's preinstalled on the transformer? Cause I swore I downloaded it. It had the install button when I went to the market. It also had an uninstall button after it's been installed, but doesn't do anything. Uninstalling will show the "install" button back when you visit the pressreader page. Oh well...may have to root it later at some point
100% sure. It comes with a trial of 5 downloads or something. Not removable without root.
Just got my Transformer yesterday, PressReader is pre-installed.

The root account is the highest privileged account on unix-like operating systems, such as Linux, which Android is based on (well, it is). It's equivalent to (an elevated) Administrator on Windows/OS X.
Having root access means you can do (for the most part) whatever the hell you want to the device. You can delete any file you want, you can write files anywhere, you can mess with the configuration in ways not normally allowed (such as tethering), backup installed apps with their configuration, etc.

Use Titanium backup, uninstall that way.
With Ti Backup, you can just freeze the app. That way you can always bring it back if you change your mind ...

Hi - I 'm a new Transformer Pad owner and I really like it. I have a question about the preinstalled app MyLibrary. I am using it to organize my e-books (from Amazon) into folders as well as to note which books are 1st, 2nd, etc in a series. I took me hours and hours to do this so what I want to do is to back up what I've done in case something goes wrong and I have to restore the tablet. However, I can't find where the MyLibrary files are located in the file manager software and MyLibrary isn't located among the apps available for backup in App Backup. Does anyone know how I can back this up? Any help will be *greatly* appreciated. Thanks.
Its a system app and you have to back it up as such. I don't think you can back up system apps with the asus backup manager but you can use other backup apps like Titanium Backup
You need root, it is in /system/app
How to get root?
Thanks. How do I get root? What is it? Is it risky? I don't want to alter anything on the tablet to do the backup.
Think of rooting as jailbreaking it, you can use my One-click PERI tool, but that is definitely altering the tablet. (software not hardware)
Any other way?
Thanks for your reply. Is there any way to back up system apps without altering the tablet to get root?
No, it's a locked down section of the tablet. :[
You can do it on your computer by extracting it from the blob too.
Let me see if I can find the .apk file for you, I may have it lying around somewhere.
EDIT: Do you need to open MyCloud first to get in it? I have MyCloud
Thanks again
Thanks for continuing to help. I don't need to open MyCloud first. MyLibrary is separate all by itself. Thanks for saying that you will try to find the .apk file but that won't accomplish what I'm trying to do. The thing is I put a lot of work in to organizing my books into folders and making comments on some books that are a part of a series. It's that part (all my changes) that I'm trying to back up in case I have to restore the tablet. How to you extract something from the blob via computer? Thanks.
Oh, I'm sorry there's no easy way to do that without root :/
You'd have to go through a hour process just to get that data, and it'd be impossible to restore without root anyway.
Sorry for the misunderstanding, I thought you wanted the apk.
Titanium backup is a good root app to do this though.
Any other apps?
Thanks for your help again. Do you know of any apps that will allow me to import Kindle books and then organize them, make notations as to which book is first, and then back up that with app backup? Thanks.
I hope that xda community can help people like me, who prefer to stay with stock ROM for any reason, but was able to root the device. There are only a few things that I can think of right now is:
- [SAFE] Change gps.conf to improve GPS
- [SAFE] Change hosts to block ads
- [WARN] Delete bloatware
What else can I do to make this device better without having to unlock bootloader?
TIA
You can use Browser2RAM if I'm not mistaken

In short, you should be able to alter any file on the system that doesn't require a bootloader flash, like recovery or kernel I think.

Titanium Backup. How about scripts to maintain your application? The xda app cache can grow quite large just as any app's cache can. Does it impact the app? Depending on the device it can be invisible or it can lag your device. Rooted, I have scripts running nightly that delete the cache files so I don't have to. And yes - the difference is readily apparent.

Doubtful on that because altering the wrong files while its running could render it unresponsive. I was thinking more like changing default props files for tweaking, hosts for ad removal, and adding busy box files. I guess my first answer was too broad, sorry.

- [Safe] Read full logcat and /proc/last_kmsg (useful for developers, or users who wants to help developer know what went wrong or why a particular app crashed)
- [Safe] Cheat on games
- [RISKY] Change boot animation
- [RISKY] Disable apps that autostarts on boot.
- [RISKY] Tweak CPU Governor, I/O scheduler, SD card read cache, sysfs, Android internal memory manager & task killer, Dalvik heap size, WiFi and Tegra 3 parameters. I would recommend using Android Tuner app for tweaking.
Don't know about other people, but, I had bad experiences with Pimp My Rom (Beta).
Using motochopper method, I got mine Root but Unlock stock JB.
I just used System Tuner (free version of Android Tuner) to disable some apps at boot time and it works.
When I am abroad without Wifi, I use GPS Time to set the clock.
Titanium Backup Root to backup apps and system because for some reason the ASUS stock App Backup doesn't work right anymore
(for around 90 apps, always having 3,4 apps failed).
How can I root my HTC one m8 but still have it be the same as when I bought it. For example, I still want to receive updates and I want everything to work the same but I'll be rooted . Basically I just want to remove the bloatware and install cool roms. I don't want anything else to change. Is this possible?
I like everything about this phone so I dont want to change anything
You can't really root and still accept otas. Verizon is without a doubt after the root methods so an OTA will probably break root. You also won't be accepting OTAs when you're on a custom ROM. You can either just root with weak sauce or s off and unlock with fire water.

you can most def root (very easy Process) and remove the bloatware and keep everything else stock. while you cant update ota, just keep checking on here, somebody will post an updated bloatfree rom that runs as close to stock as possible. The best of both worlds my friend.

You can do what I did...First I downloaded WeakSauce.apk directly to my phone, then downloaded SuperSU from the play store. Then I downloaded Titanium Backup and used it deleted the bloatware off of my phone..very easy.

If you are rooted but haven't changed the contents of \system in any way (i.e. NOT gotten rid of any apps), AND aren't running a custom recovery, the OTA's should take. The OTA's appear to look at the system directory to see if there are any modifications and fail the OTA flash if there are. So, if you are essentially stock everything except for root access, you should be okay.
That having been said, I didn't see anyone post about a successful OTA update after rooting; and most folks once they're rooted just can't help get a custom recovery (how else can you Nandroid?) or make the slightest tweak(s) to the system.
As someone said above, usually when there's an OTA, the devs have put it out as a flashable mod within 24 hours; and as someone ELSE said above, best NOT to take the OTA's because they are notorious for breaking root.
Yeah, OTA's are a nice touch, and that's how I run my Nexus 7, but on my phone they're a pain in the neck --- I want things my way, and I'm not willing to give that up.

Your current setup does not permit writing to the \system partition. That's fine. (And that's especially good if you really are determined to take OTA updates and keep it pure stock but rooted.) To "get rid" of the bloatware, or any other system app you don't want to see you can do two things: (1) hide the app in the app drawer (that's done from the menu in the app drawer). And (2) Using app manager from settings, navigate to "all" apps, work your way down the list of apps and each one you want to disable: (a) turn off notifications; and then (b) press "disable." I think one or two just can't be disabled, e.g. Visual Voice Mail, but for the most part, you'll be able to make the bloat seem to "disappear" and you won't have affected your system partition, plus, they'll still be gone when you reboot.

I know you all are going to think I'm ridiculous, but I bought 2 shield tablets for my kids ages 3 and nearly 2 for educational purposes. After weighing the Nexus 9, shield tablet and Sony's Z2 tablet the shield seemed to be the best value. My kids have a restricted profile with only the educational/learning apps that I have selected available to them. My question is how do I disable or uninstall the preloaded NVIDIA apps such as SHIELD HUB, the controller one, Twitch sharing, etc.? My kids will never use them likely for the usable life of the tablets and I don't need them poking around with them so I'd like to have them removed or hidden at the least. I have the tablets stock rooted with TWRP recovery and I've used Titanium backup on previous devices to do something similar before but it doesn't seem be to able to located the APKs of these apps to uninstall them.
Thanks for the help!
Go into Settings and then Apps, you can select which you want to disable and uninstall (will not always uninstall as its part of the system i think) This is what I have done as i dont want junk running when I dont need/want it to

I tried that first before resorting to Titanium Backup. The Disable button is greyed out and not available to click for these apps. These are like some super system level apps that can't be disabled or uninstalled the normal way.

My suggestion would be to root the device. Many apps such as Titanium require root access for full functionality. Once rooted you'll be able to remove anything that you want. I personally just use Root Browser to navigate to System/App and delete what I don't want.
The drawback to rooting is that you won't have automatic OTA updates. (Not hard to get past that, download the OTA file and flash in Recovery.) But for your use you might not want to receive OTAs anyway.

My tablets are rooted, I mentioned that in the original post. However, Titanium Backup was unable to uninstall them (thus my question here) saying something about being unable to locate the APKs. I'll try Root Browser manually like you suggested when I get back home to them later.
I'm fully aware of all consequences of rooting, OTAs, etc. Every Android device I've owned since the original T-Mobile G1 has been rooted, but I do appreciate your willingness to help!

Got it, I misread the part about being rooted and your experience on previous devices.
I stopped using Titanium Backup a while ago. There are simpler means of restoring apps and restoring data is likely to cause headaches. That said, the problem seems odd. As far as I know, all apps install to either /system/app or /data/app, That being the case, can't imagine why TB wouldn't be able to find them.
Are you by any chance running Multirom?

Not running MultiROM, just stock with root. I thought it was odd that Titanium couldn't locate the APKs too, that's why I decided to ask here. I suspect if I go cruising around /system/app looking for these APKs to remove I won't find them there.

You would be correct about them not being in system. Look in /vendor/app. Should be what you want.
