[Q] ota ICS update problem?

Hi all, I'm having a problem trying to update to ICS!
Here's my phones details before I explain:
1: Samsung Google Nexus S GT-I9020/GSM
2:Running NSCollab 1.0.60
3: Baseband=I9020XXKB1
4: Franco Kernel 2.6.35
First off I'm not sure if my phone can house the ICS update because I'm not 100% sure of my model (checked box & contents & under battery!) ???
I understood that you needed to be on android stock GB 2.36 before you could update, so this is what I did! I lost my signal/network & couldn't connect or even see the vodafone network I'm on so I reverted back to my NSCollab 1.0.60 nandroid backup, only to find the same no signal/network problem! I tried again (back to stock 2.36, still no signal!) powered off, used fastboot to flash cwm 5.0.20 recovery image, then tried to update ota ICS 4.03 after renaming to update.zip! (previousle ported to sd/card!) It worked but got stuck on ICS boot animation for nearly 20 min's before I had to pull battery! I retried a few times, but kept getting 07 errors! So then, back to bloody NSCollab 1.0.60 nandroid backup "AGAIN" , Only to spend half the day trawling google, here & numerous sites to restore my signal/network again, but this time having to get back my original imei, as after repairing it produced a 00............0000 generic one?? Got it up & running now with my baseband showing (as above!), original/true imei & signal/network!
So the questions are these: 1: Can the ota ICS update available now go on my model nexus s???? (Still confused as to my model!?) 2:Why ICS boot animation froze & 07 errors??? 3:Why when I revert to stock do I lose my signal/network? because with no network you can't even check updates for phone in settings coz no signal!!
If anyone can help a friendly noob with these questions I'll be forever in their debt, lol! If the ICS update that's availabe as of now isn't compatable with my nexus s model (???) then I won't even try again till it is, & if it is compatable, then this thread is coming from a very disgruntled ICS hungry chap, lol!
ps: no questions about how I got my signal/network & original imei back please! I'll post another thread about this when I have time! CHEERS PEOPLE!

Thnx for reply surdu_petru, I won't try this just yet as I'm scared of losing my signal/network again, then not being able to recieve OTA updates of any kind! Will wait for hopefully more replies & answers first! Insidentally could you share with me how you can work out stock rom 2.3.4 is specific to my nexus s model? Obviously if it is correct version then it should also already have correct radio version so I don't have to flash another!?
Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the reply bro..tho my question is will any other custom fw work as well ? or is it hit and go ?
Yes, any GT-I9003 rom will surely work. Just make sure you read the requirements properly incase they say anything about phone memory and stuff because I obviously haven't read everything on every custom rom forum . I am sure the phone memory doesn't matter and most roms should install/work just fine .
don't install MIUI
even though its visually more clean and organized but its battery guzzler.
if you want to know how to install it i can guide you but my recommendation is not to do it. your battery will drain in 3-4 hours

I have flashed above ROM and it does work properly.. for i9003 4gb version...
it is still in early stage probably alpha and has couple of known issues like Bluetooth not working and battery drains quickly...
other than that all the basic stuffs are working fine... Google now is also functional..
I have been using this ROM since last 2 to 3 days and other than above 2 known issues I also feel UI is somewhat laggy on I9003...

[ROM][PORT][A89][HELP]Smoothie[4.0.4]

Hey everyone, I tried to port this ROM from the i9000 (Galaxy S). It's called the Smoothie ROM. I tried my best to make this ROM. The Base is the Zhao Edges Stock ROM. I just need somebody to continue development for this ROM as I have a lack of knowledge. I've uploaded it to Google Drive
The Ported ROM, or the source ROM is a CM9 Based ROM. You can find it here
In which stage is the development now.Till where did you port it?

Hey I don't think nybody will help you in porting the rom..Its just a stock like ics rom made for gs.Nobody will have any benefit porting it to a89 ninja..PLEASE NOTE THIS:The best ROM available for a89 ninja is the stock rom itself.

What is the need to port that ROM.It is not even good as the stock ics.We all know that GS does not have ics. Therefore this rom will have many bugs. Also this is a rom for GS.So porting this ROM will almost be impossible..
Meantime if you can spare some time please check out the new rom for a89 that I am releasing this april 26.You can find it in the a89 ninja development section.Hit thanks to support me.

make a nandroid from recovery just in case
the flash the newest version of the rom without wipe
I always wiped cache +dalvik after having flashed the new zip file. You shouldnt lose your settings, you might need to do a full wipe at some point if you're starting to experience problems though. Didn't have to do that myself, yet, but I (and you will at that point as well) might have to look into getting something like titanium backup then.

[HELP] How to Update SGH-i896 2.3.3 to 4.0.3

To the best of my knowledge there is no official 4.03 for the i896 (or the i897 that I have.) There are 4.x.x roms for both devices that run on the 2.3.3 (i896) and 2.3.5 (i897) bootloaders. In fact the devs have created/ported roms all the way to 5.1.1.
Are you on the stock 2.3.3 rom for the i896 or a custom rom?
Are your bootloader and modem at version 2.3.3 / KH2?
Is your device rooted?
Do you have a custom recovery installed?
Is there a specific rom you are wanting to flash?
Currently I am using a custom rom based on android 4.2.2. My Captivate is not being used as a phone, I use it as a media player and sports/activity tracker.

YEs its on stock rom 2.3.3.
Its rooted using superoneclick.
No custom recovery just "Android System Recovery 3e"
I just want to flash 4.0.3 or above.
I do some google but I only got results for your device(i897), I dont know if that procedure will work on my device(i896).

This thread 【Guide】How To flash ANY Captivate ROM from Stock (including ICS) will start you in the direction you need to go. The poster says:
These instructions are the same for the i896 (rogers) and i897 (at&t) captivates. There is NO DIFFERENCE! ALL ROMS/KERNELS WORK ON BOTH PHONES!

Since you are rooted but on stock recovery you can start at step 7 of the Odin method. That will give you a custom recovery which will allow you to flash the custom roms that come as zip files for flashing from a custom recovery. OR, you could start at the beginning of the Heimdall method.
After you get CWM recovery on your phone you will need to flash the ROM of your choice. Do you have a specific rom in mind? If not you can check through the Captivate Development sub-forum

Based on TRusso's thread that I quoted and linked above ROMs for the i897 will work on the i896. Of course, I have no way of testing since I have an i897 instead of an i896. I just searched the thread you linked, and found this.
Is there a particular reason you are seeking an ICS ROM and not something newer? (JB or KK)

I'm not sure how GApps affect wifi and sound.
You could try GApps from a different source: OpenGapps, Bank Gapps, CM GApps, Slim GApps, etc.
Make sure you use a GApps for Android 4.3. After installing it may take a while to update to newer Google Services Framework versions.
