Japan users - Samsung Galaxy S II LTE (Skyrocket) SC-03D - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

I finally made the move to upgrade from my Samsung Omnia HD (2009 - $866 USD) running the ill fated Symbian to my first Android phone, the Skyrocket, and I am loving it.
First some pictures:
Some feedback:
SR
+ The SR is slightly lighter and less hefty compared to the Omnia HD
+ Bigger and brigher screen, particularly from an angle the SR's brightness is very strong
+ Real touchscreen behaviour, Android is the best thing that has ever happened to us mobile/electronic geeks, smooth operating and low lag, highly intuitive
+ Music and video management and playback is years ahead, fast and well organised, anything on Symbian sucks big time.
- Camera is not as good as I hoped it would be, after 3 years you hope that it has improved since then but I find it to be slightly hazy and very grainy during low light shooting. I feel that the virtual shutter button on the screen may have something to do with the hazy look, though the grainy effects is unavoidable without a flash.
- Speakers are not very loud, I've searched through all the reviews and little was mentioned about the speakers. They would be considered "loud enough" in a small room and on a table, but I've tried using it as a portable music player on my car dashboard and it is not as powerful as the Omnia HD. The position of the speakers is at the back of the phone, which doesn't help especially with the phone lying down.
The battery life of the SR is reasonable, I can get through 2 to 2/5 days with normal use (checking SMS, no wifi, no 3G internet, no LTE), since Softbank does not support LTE I think this helps the SR greatly in preserving battery power.
Omnia HD
+ It feels more solid because it's designed like a brick.
+ The camera says f=4.78mm 1:2.6, and it is still one of the best camera phone I have ever used, plus it has a shutter button whereas the SR doesn't.
+ Has a much better speaker setup than the SR with 2 speakers on both end of the phone, I've been using the Omnia HD as my temporary music player in my car, the problem is that the multimedia software on Symbian sucks so much.
+ Battery life seems to be better. It's 1500mah is actually much bigger than the SR's 1850mah battery, and seems to last longer. But that's what you should expect for a lower powered phone with less software features.
- Smaller touchscreen is not as responsive and more difficult to type even though it was considered quite big when it was released (3.7").
- SYMBIAN, terrible OS, a throwback to the late 90s and early 2000s.
- I really hate using SYMBIAN.
My expectations were high for my Omnia HD replacement and I think I have done well to not buy an iPhone all this time. Was seriously looking at the LG Optimus HD (Nitro HD) but the very poor battery life and a less brighter/punchier screen made the SR an easy decision. There is already an SR-HD with the HD resolution in Korea, but I could not wait for it and thought that if the SR is the last of the 800x480 screen resolution type then it will probably be the best, and it is with the Super Amoled plus (which is different from the regular Galaxy S II). I'll wait for 2 generations of the HD versions before replacing the SR. By that time the camera should have also improved to 12 megapixels.
Also, since only Docomo offered the SR, I had to buy the phone outright ($842 and still cheaper than my Omnia HD!) and unlock it so I can use it on Softbank. Best decision I've ever made. Haven't got the APN setup yet for mobile internet but that's another $80 which is not a priority right now as wifi is good enough. Anyone got any questions feel free to ask!

How did you unlocked yours? did you do it at a Docomo shop?

I like that Nissan GT-R magazine in the background. xD
But yes, the Skyrocket is a VERY nice phone.

any news concerning the release of Ice Cream Sandwich for this phone?

I unlocked the phone at Docomo (around 3000 yen) and had it configured at Softbank. Not all Docomo/Softbank stores are the same and it depends who your dealer is, some are willing to unlock the phone for your while others may not (it's a technical issue beyond what most Japanese chicks at the counters are familiar with). I received the unlock code for my phone, some people had not.
As for ICS, Samsung did state that they will release an upgrade early this year. Not sure how this will affect my Docomo/Softbank hybrid but will be good to see what others have done. Since it's my first time using Android I'm not in a rush to root.

SGSII LTE tip - Screen capture
To capture the screen, press the home button and the power button (in that order) quickly. You should see the screen white out for a moment. It will take a picture of the screen and save it to a folder called "Screen Capture".

Yeah, it's the Japanese brochure from the recent Tokyo motor show, so slightly thicker than the usual one from the stores.

I rooted mine but haven't unlocked it. Might try it today though.
As for ICS, I suppose that since the SC-03D is not a Google Vanilla phone and comes with all the bloatware from Docomo, we have to rely on Docomo. I am worried they might not make the efforts to do so though. Only time will tell and I hope that sooner or later someone will release a ROM to our phone.

Hey 'Oren the Red'
Pls do let us know how you unlocked it?
Seems there are a whole lot of people who want to know the method if you do it yourself.
All my research just turns up that the only solution is buying the code from some website.
Cheers.

does this have a button?

Yes there's a hard button between 2 touch buttons, which seems to be the design for current Galaxies.

I've galaxy s2 unlocked and i'm going to Tokyo for long time, will i have problem with softbank first registration? finally- will it work, i mean, my operator free galaxy in softbank white plan? thanks.

setting up the apn might be easier than u think. If u aready have data on ur plan try searching apn on the market. There are several tools available that will provide the right settings

nice quality pics, what kind of camera do you have?

is there a way to root a docomo sc-03d?
coz i tried zegrush and does nothing??

seriously? dude this thread is months old. so three things
1) Welcome to XDA! We are a helpful community, but please make every attempt to use the search feature, no one likes to help those who won't help themselves
2) In the future, please check the last respond date, and don't raise a thread from the dead if its not within a reasonable time frame
3) Use one click super root, and attempt it a bunch of times, I mean a bunch. I once rooted an lg optimus lte and it took no exaggeration 10 tried before it worked

Smh the noobs strike again

Help me figure out if I want to an XT720

So I currently have a Huawei U8100 from WINDMobile. It's a good starter android (at a good price) but it's not much more than that and I want something better. I dislike how small it is and how slow it can be at times (as well as jam up and reboot), and it doesn't have a great list of features. Getting my hands on an unlocked good android in Canada (at a decent price) doesn't seem to be so easy, but WIND does carry the XT720. My first impressions from checking it out a bit online is that it looks very nice (I really like the glass screen and unusual design) and that it has some pretty good specs, as well as a high quality camera and video recording. And the price of $400 is not too hefty. So, basically it's something I'm considering.
Here are my questions though:
Updates: So this is stuck at 2.1 from Motorala, which is something that initially turned me away from this. But apparently, this forum has decided to hire a dev to get 2.2 on it (something I find very cool btw). So it seems that this will have 2.2 sometime in the near future (I hope?). That increases the appeal for me significantly. I was wondering though, hypothetically are the development of future updates (2.3, 2.4 etc...) possible to bring to the XT720 like 2.2 is being brought? I'm trying to think long term here and figure out if I want a phone that will never go higher than 2.2 (and if that's true), or if I'm fine with that.
Speed: One of the biggest drawbacks for me and my Huawei U8100 is the speed of it. It's just not very fast. I do have it overclocked and it works a bit faster, but it's just not that fast even after that. The XT720 seems to be at 550mhz (which isn't much faster from the standard U8100 speed) but I read that Motorala released an update that overclocked it to 720mhz. But what I read seemed to imply that it was only for UK and some other place (i.e. not Canada). Does that mean I won't have that update if I get the phone? Even if that's the case, there are ROMs for the phone that will allow me to overclock to that and be stable? Will the dev who is making 2.2 for this allow overclocking in his build? Additionally even though it comes at 550, I read that Motorala's enhancements (??) make it feel fast. Is that true? Is the XT720 a fast phone?
Camera/Video: No question that it takes good pictures. How's the video though? I use a flip Mino for all my video recording needs and while it works, the screen is tiny and the resolution isn't the best (nor is it HD). Does the XT720 have a better camcorder then my flip Mino?
Screen quality/sound: How does the actual graphics and display look? Is it very clear? And how is the sound quality? As well, the U8100 has a resistive touch screen that isn't very responsive (though it works), how's the touch on the XT720?
Your general opinion: How do you, as a owner feel about the XT720? Do you love it? Do you just consider it a decent phone? Do you just want it for it's camera? Do you not recommend it? What is your opinion about this phone in general?
Also, if you're from WIND and had a U8100 and got an XT720, please say so (just for curiousity's sake ).
Also, one more thing, not really related to this subforum, but more of a general question. My U8100 is rooted with the popular The Celestial Teapot. Does rooting your phone take down the value of resellability? If I try to sell the U8100 on let's say ebay, would people want to stay away from rooted phones? If so, is there a way to "unroot" the phone?
Any help and clarity is appreciated. Thanks

Currently there is no chance of getting 2.3 or 2.4 without Motorola's help. The 2.2 we're talking about actually comes from Motorola. Motorola released 2.2 for the Korean XT720 in December, but won't release 2.2 in any other region. We're hoping Dexter can help us figure out how to run the Korean 2.2.
I am super disappointed about the locked bootloader. It would be bearable if Motorola intended to actually support the phone, but Motorola has officially announced that 2.1 is the end of the line. I will never again purchase a phone with a locked bootloader. I chalk that up as a learning experience.
As far as speed goes, I've only used an XT720--it's my first smartphone. It seemed faster than the Palm III I used for years . Eventually I came to feel it was unbearably slow in its "official" form. After rooting, applying the all-in-one optimizer, and replacing the class 2 sd card with a faster one, I'm pretty happy.
I don't use the camera much at all, though, and the few times I've tried to use it, I've been frustrated with the shutter lag (even with a class 10 card). There may be camera tweaks I don't know about, it's not been a priority for me.

If you unroot it and wipe the files on the SD, any ordinary person shouldn't be able to tell if it was rooted before.

so, no worries about resale value there

there are plenty of apps in the market with better quality, just try them out, most of them are free anyways, see which one you like best
re: speed
the phone is stock at 720, not 550, only old ROM will still be there
the update is OTA, as soon as i turned on my new phone, it asked me if i wanted to update, and it was done, that was with the stock ROM, no root, no nothing
also, the CPU spec (manufacture spec of the chip) is actually rated for 1000 Mhz
it was actually under-clocked to 720 (550) mostly to save battery power
re: Froyo 2.2
yes it's true we might not see anything better than 2.2
but that is more than enough to bring out the full power of the phone
re: general
this phone is awesome, comparable to the latest stuff available, just the battery is a bit on the shy side 1390 mAh... which will get drained very quickly if you leave your phone running at 1000 Mhz all the time, reason why i speculate it was released at as a 550, and then updated by Moto to 720 to bring a happy medium for speed vs. battery life
it can run smoothly any of the latest 3D games that work on the other phones
it's one of the rare phones that have a true authentic Xenon flash, and not a LED light for "falsh"... i meant "flash"
re: sound
simply the better one of all the phones i have
re: screen
is a normal TFT LCD, no much you can expect from it.... that's comparing it to a SAMOLED display, there's simply no comparison
Hi, I am windmobile user with XT720, previous phone was Nokia 5230. XT720 is definately an upgrade compare to the Nokia, however, if you compare with other Android AWS phones, such as Galaxy S, Nexus One, Nexus S, it is a little behind. Consider I paid $250 for it (450 -$50 discount, - $150 windtab), it is actually a good deal for this phone.
RE Update:
With JIT enabled, App2SD, new Golauncher, it is acceptable without Froyo/Gingerbread. The down side is Flash 10.1, but the youtube app fixes it.
RE Speed:
JIT actually enhances the overall performance by a noticable amount, with slightly OC from 720Mhz to 850~900Mhz you could eliminates the lack in most game. Note worth: the default speed is [email protected], but I could actually achieve [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], much of a performance boost w/o killing battery life.
RE Camera/Video.
XT720 is absolute awful when it comes to camera/video. the image quality is worst then my Nokia N73 (3.2MP). 720p video recording is terrible, laggy as hell, i rather record at SD resolution. If you plan to do alot of Photo/Video, you better go for X10i AWS, but X10i has a lot of problem of its own, but photo/video is definitely much superior to XT720
RE Screen.
it is a good size, not much to complain, nothing much too special either.
Re General Opinion.
for $250 (as i paid), i am cool with xt720 as an Android phone, but if you going to pay $400 brandnew for it, I suggest you get an lightly used Galaxy S from Kijiji or Craiglist or RFDs, probably around $480 ish. little more pricy but much better IMO.
RE U8100
I don't think U8100 is capable of providing user the full Android Experience, XT720 does however.
PM me if you have specific questions. Hope this helps you a little bit.

So I'm going to check out that link Allgamer posted, check out WindTab options some more (is it only for new customers?) and then see if I can figure out what I'm doing.
Are there any estimates for when the 2.2 will be ready? (And is it basically confirmed that it will happen?)
Thanks for all the help guys
The screen is actually much more beautiful than a AMOLED, but that is just my personal opinion.
And am I the only one who thinks this camera is NOT crap? Image quality here is more than fine and video @720p isn't laggy AT ALL. Note that overclock is needed to record in 720p, else the camera app will crash. But I don't care about that. Once overclocking is enabled, it runs really, really great
So I think many of you need to stop complaining. Or am I really the only one who is actually very happy with this camera?
i really like the camera as well, it is very good, it's great phone for taking picture
I suggest you stick with your current phone and buy a new phone from eBay which is compatible with WIND. Yu should get a Google phone at least you will always get the latest for it unlike us who are stuck with what is given. Unlike an Apple product you can easily watch others surpass you while you are stuck running old version of your software.
Sent from my Milestone XT720 using XDA App
the top choices right now that are AWS (1700+2100) compatible are only this phone XT720 and Nexus S
the XT720 can be found for less than $400 new on phones stores, and are unlocked
the Nexus S, average street price is $700 to $800
unless you can travel to the USA and buy one yourself for $530+tax +GAS or plane ticket
the XT720 is subsidized by WIND & MobilityCity if you buy through them, so it's cheaper than $400
What AllGamer said. Nexus S isn't as easy to get my hands on. And to be honest I do really like the design and features of the XT720.
I think what I need to do in order to figure out more about it (especially since I'm getting mixed reviews about the camera/video) is to check it out for myself. Which is precisely what I'll be doing when I head to a WIND store today or tomorrow. Hopefully they can also clear up the deal with WINDtab for me (I don't think I can use it since I'm not a new customer but who knows, they might be nice lol).
What versions are compatible with WIND? Here's international version on Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Motorola-MILE...BJC8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1296432364&sr=8-1 and it's new for $70 cheaper than WIND (and with Warranty). Compatible with WIND? Is there anything different from this and the one WIND sells? I'm just wondering why Motorola is selling it for $70 cheaper lol.
Thanks
Guys is it worth it to switch from Samsung wave to Motorola xt720? thanks
So after playing around for a bit, my first impressions: (granted, I didn't play around with it for very long)
Touch - Way better touch reaction than my U8100
Look/Design - Looks better (and much thinner) in real life. Really like the look.
Sound - Didn't get a chance to test.
Camera - I didn't play around with it for very long, but my first impressions were that the camera quality was very very nice.
Video - Also. I don't think I was even using the higher settings and I think this is better than my dedicated camcorder (flip mino - which does happen to be over 2 years old.)
Display - Very roomie (as opposed to the U8100), very visual.
Speed - Didn't get good oppurtinities to test with.
Anyways, I was overall impressed with it and I'm leaning towards buying it. They said that WINDtab is only for new activations, but I could just create a new account and get it for $250 ($150 WINDtab). WINDTab does expire on the 31st though which is like... tomorrow. XD
I think it makes more sense to get from Amazon though (provided that works with WIND). It will take quite a while to get $150 paid on WINDtab (with WIND's cheap plans). Additionally, if I make a new account I lose my current benefits of my special plan (which saves me $5 a month until September - i.e. $35 ). Through Amazon I save $70 and keep my $35 + I'm not forever stuck on paying off WIND.
My one major concern before making a purchase is if 2.2. doesn't get released (by Dexter) for this, but it does seem likely that it will be.
Anyways, if anyone could clear up the deal with Amazon (does it work with WIND?) as soon as possible (so I can figure out if I should buy from WIND), that would be a great help.
Thanks for all the help from you guys.

It works on WIND.
my XT720 is international, not Wind model, but using it in Wind
and it's a shame to say, the XT720 works better (as a phone & camera) than the Nexus S
See now you people were able to easily answer that question while when I asked on WIND community no one could give me a straight answer... (worst comes to worst there is Amazon's 30-day return policy)
Anyways, think I'm going to get this.

easy root http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=887416
The situation is similar at Cincinnati Bell. The XT720 is much cheaper upfront than the Nexus S so that definitely tips the scales. It's pretty nice after rooting and optimizing and it is worlds better than the Nokia 6010 I was using previously. Plus, I like to ***** about multinationals. Win win.

[Q] So has anyone been put off?

So has anyone been put off by this device and the initial (lack of) reviews and comments from other posters?
I was 100% sure to get it, but held out a few days and now kind of feel 75% sure and wondering now whether to wait for the Evo 3D or even wait a few more months and see what else HTC will bring to the table.
I'm no Samsung fanboy and personally hate my gf's galaxy but i still think HTC haven't shouted enough about this device to persuade me that it's their flagship device like the Desire was last year.
I know it's early days and there is still time for sense to be updated but i'm just not feeling any hype about it.
I wish people with the device would make more threads about their experiences with it. At the moment it seems there are just a few threads floating about.
I've yet to see a good battery thread with praise or complaints....This..to me is the big deciding factor. Since my Desire, with heavy usage, can barely got 4 hours I know pretty much anything can beat it, but it'd be nice to have a device where i can have all my widgets and syncing going on without the worry of needing to charge it at lunch time.

Elaborate on the battery please, it's my biggest deal breaker
Its a bit too early too comment, a few cycles in is the perfect time to comment... out of the box battery will obviously be a lot different to what it will be like in a couple of weeks of usage.

personally, i'm still not convinced by that argument. I've had my fair share of phones and never seen a difference....I think the fact that the user stops using it as much as when in the honeymoon period, thus seems like the battery is better...
Yeh, that is one way of looking at it, but you also find the settings that are best for you and your own usage of the phone, thus making it easier to manage the battery usage... such as brightness of the screen... what apps you use etc and etc. There is unfortunately, a million and one ways to look at the argument
The biggest and best question i would ask people, is are they HAPPY with the phone? if not, why? and if so, why?

I am happy with this phone.
battery, if you don't play lots of game or browse website, it can last 1 day. battery is always the big issue with smart phones.
Root it and you never stop using it

Looks like those HTC's won't be coming to the UK...for AT&T and LTE.
Also nobody knows when the Holiday and Lead are coming out. Nor when the GSM version of the Evo 3D are coming out. If you need a new phone there's not much point in waiting for an unspecified future date in the hopes of something better as something better is always coming (don't forget the rumours that Samsung will release a new flagship every 6 months). If you just want a new cell phone and can handle to wait then sure, go ahead.
As for the reviews... I get the impression that HTC was pressed for time. Not exactly rushed, but close to it. If you recall the ROMs on some of the preliminary models shown in hands-ons were only using one core and they supposedly had a firmware upgrade just before releasing. Add to that the bad press over the preliminary benchmarks which were worse than the Nexus One and maybe HTC didn't want to hand out review units until it was completely ready (which I get the impression was the actual launch of the device). We know Slashgear is getting a review ready and I think it's safe to assume GSMArena is too so I just wait a bit more. If you aren't convinced then go with another phone which does convince you. The important thing is that you be happy with whatever decision you make.
not been put off and its very logical there are no real reviews yet...official launch worldwide is about somewhere in june.. only vodafone has now the exclusivity plus the phone has not been sent to reviewers yet !
I have . . . paused. I really wanted it, but the lack of praise on this forum has made me wonder. But I really I cant see myself with the galaxy II. My gf has the Galaxy s and whilst its quick, i miss the heft of my HD2 when i hold it.
So it feels alot like the Sensation, with or without shortcomings, is the only other path right now. Does anyone else feel that way?

The quality of the device is fantastic. It feels really nice, the screen is amazing. The new qHD display is nice, bit different from the WVGA, and I think I already prefer it.
Missing root but I hope (really hope) this will come
I have no doubt root will come. Nothing is ever unbeatable. No employee is not disgruntled enough, no certainty is ever certain.
Patience. And thanks for telling me that. I need to hear it
Just waiting for root and I'll be jumping to buy one. I need a front facing camera and as I'm completely happy with the Desire HD this is a step up of the same plus the added speed. Keep looking at the SGSII but that plastic is sooooooo off putting
This forum has spoilt us and we're getting picky now
One wonders what device we'll be carrying 5 years from now
By the way, don't count on root coming real soon - have a read whats going on in Incredible S
ps. Congrats to the folks with this awesome device in hand!

...been intending on signing up and posting a few bits but have been too lazy recently, but I shall do so now.
The above is what I was going to say. The phone hasn't been launched properly yet, it's effectively just Vodafone customers getting a bit of a pre-release taster. I wouldn't be surprised if we're also being used as a bit of a test group so that they can see what we like/don't like and what needs fixing/ramping up in future releases. I also expect the ROM that's shipped with the general release phones to be updated from what we've got, considering that they have a month of user testing to look at.
As for the phone, I haven't transferred my number over yet and I can't use my T-Mobile SIM as although allows me to text and call, it doesn't seem to want to allow Internet on my phone. So although I've played with it, I haven't really 'used' it yet. It seems really, really nice though. Screen is lovely and going back to using my Hero today feels like going back to some lo-res toy!
Couple of things I'll say aren't too good:
The LED notification is really hard to see compared to the full blown 100 megawatt light on my hero.
The browser, although really good, doesn't seem to like full flash sites. I was trying to watch a few highlights videos from ehlhockey.tv and it was really struggling, but that may just be me or the dire, dire design of the site as full flash sites are made by the devil himself!!
Battery will need a bit more time, but I took the phone off charge at about 6pm last night and checked it at 7am this morning and it was still on 100% with WiFi on. I think HTC have somehow discovered perpetual energy. If it's on 100% when I get back tonight then I'm going to be hooking it up to the mains in the house and living off of the free HTC electricity!

Haha good stuff. But don't stop there. notify the power companies and hook it up to the national grid before another Sensation user does it HTC might be on to a real winner with the battery
First impressions
As you can see from my signature, I've had a broad range of OSs and devices in my hand, and must admit, going from a much played-with HD2 to this Sensation is the biggest jump advancing jump I've made.
The HD2 made upgrading a hard choice, we were spoilt with that, so on doing my research, playing with many Samsungs, Motorolas, Nokias etc (much to the annoyance of shop staff) none of them made any impression above 'meh' in a lot of my criteria other than the Sensation.
I've been bullying this poor thing for 48 hours now, and there has only been one glitch - HTC sync decided not to play for about 20 mins, but after Win7 forced a driver upon it, it was very fluid. The same as the rest of my experiences of this device.
I've got an overlap of contracts this month so i've been testing real-world 3g usage on both O2 and Vodafone, and must say, this battery life is like a backpack worth of battery compared to the HD2, on a par with the large-ish one in the X1.

thinking of picking up a RAZR hd from Fido Canada. Long term thoughts?

So here goes, I can now get a Razr HD for free through Fido canada. Not a bad deal considering from what I can tell, this phone will be a perfect replacement for my Nexus S running 4.1.2
From the reviews I read online, people are really enjoying this phone and it seems to have a fairly pure android experience that, coming from a nexus device, I want. The main selling point for me is LTE and SDHC. These two things alone are what I am switching phones for mostly.
1. So I ask you this, would you reccomend this phone to someone else?
2. How is rom support? is it easy to unlock and load aftermarket roms on this like CM etc and does it take to it well?
3. How is the device quality physically? It looks terrific online.
4. Anything else you might add?
Thanks again for the help!

1. Yes. I am quite happy with my Rogers Razr HD.
2. Rom support so far is ... in progress. There's not a huge user base for this device yet and it's only been available since October. Rogers/Fido won't see Jellybean stock upgrade until "1st Quarter" which might be as late as March, provided they don't change the scheduling again. Having said that, France and Australia already have JB, so maybe we'll see it sooner than that. It is easy to unlock and load aftermarket roms, BUT you have to unlock it through Motorola and you void your warranty to do so. Just so you know.
3. Physical build is really good, imo. Battery life is excellent, screen is bright, volume is loud. Only weakness is the camera, which is mediocre.
4. There's no decent desk dock available for it yet. There's a car dock, and a couple crappy options for a desk dock but we might have to wait for a third party to make one. Also, hdmi out options are lacking ... As there are no options. IMO, it should allow screen off with hdmi on, or different resolutions output, but only has overscan and hdmi enable... And once you upgrade to JB, you lose overscan.

This is the way I look at it:
If you want custom ROMs because you actually enjoy playing around with new ROMs every two weeks (and intend to do so for the life of the device), then don't buy a Droid Razr HD now. Wait for the phone to get better support, or buy a Google Nexus branded device. You are looking for a tinker-toy more than you are looking for a reliable daily-use smartphone.
If you need a reliable daily-use smartphone, then the current state of ROM support is irrelevant. Sure, you are going to play around with custom ROMs to start. But eventually, you will settle on a ROM that you like, and then stick with that ROM for several months before changing. If that describes you, then you'll be fine getting a Droid RAZR HD. Remember, it's easy to improve on software (ROMs) after you buy a device. But once you buy hardware, you're stuck with it.
May I ask, what is hdmi overscan?

Basically changing the output resolution to eliminate black bars around the borders. The native resolution of the Razr HD is 1280x720, but it'll fill a webtop screen resolution of 1366x768 using hdmi overscan.
1 - I picked this up on Rogers and I'm pretty happy with it. Having a slightly less modified version of android is something I prefer since I'd rather do the tweaking instead of rely on manufacturers to decide what I need. Yeah, I'd recommend it but it depends how flashy people expect a phone to be out of the box.
2 - I bought it without expecting to root and fiddle with it for a year or two. That's because I don't think development for it will catch up until then since it's not nearly as popular as something like the S3, but also because it simply works right now. I have one phone and I need it to work every day so flashing roms frequently isn't something I have time for.
3 - It's just as nice as it looks online. It reminds me of an iPhone 4 / 4s with a more durable feel to it. I dropped my last phone onto steel from 20ft and it cracked the screen under the gorilla glass. This gives me a lot more confidence that the thicker first gen glass (as opposed to the thinner gorilla glass 2) will hold up to the occasional beating it takes at work.
4 - Motorola remembered to make this phone a phone. It seems a lot of companies forget that with smartphones. It's really nice to have a phone with a loud speaker, earpiece and fantastic reception. The whole time I had a Samsung Galaxy S I was battling with the quiet earpiece and yet with this I've answered calls at work with 32dB ear plugs in without issues.
I live in a city with some major dead spots and quite often my friends will realize they haven't had reception for hours and have missed calls while I maintain a couple bars. After making a switch to the Razr HD I'm always the last to lose reception :good:
hi
can someone let me know how the camera quality is? how does it do in low light settings and is the flash bright enough?
thx
I got this phone a few days ago from future shop on the 56$ promo plan. I've never had an android phone before, but so far i like the phone a lot. The kevlar on the back in the chevron pattern looks really nice and makes it stand out. It has a little lip that goes around the edge of the screen which i personally think is greatest idea ever. I dropped the phone from about 3 feet onto the sidewalk and it landed on the front facing corner of the phone. When i flipped it over the phone was undamaged. The camera isn't bad but isn't anything special either. If you decide to get the phone, get it from future shop. They offer a protection plan for 12$ a month, but you can convince them to throw some goodies in. I got a $150 in gift card and a 32gb micro sd card. The plan covers a replacement battery, but since the phone's battery can't be replaced, they will replace the phone with another phone for an equivalent value ($680 including tax).
I just picked this phone from Fido.
1: Physically speaking, this phone really looks nice ,but not ergonomic, maybe suitable for those guys with big hands.
2:Android experience is not so good, when my phone is on, there is always 1**M available RAM, not very smooth. I'am tired of rooting cell phones.I think if RAZR HD got updated to 4.2 would be very smooth.

I noticed epinter is working on this phone, he was awesome for the Atrix 4G and still is....which means great roms support for us here.
I've already got Jellybean running even though Fido/Rogers won't be releasing the update until late January. There is a couple CM10 betas out but the best working one does not have bluetooth music working yet....so I'm holding off until then.

This was a no-brainer to me, even if I cancelled my contract with Fido in a few months I would have paid less for the phone through them than on ebay or elsewhere.

Galaxy S4... And others.... a bit.... meh?

This is likely to be first time in 7 years i haven't upgraded my phone upon a handset refresh.
I'm a terrible phone whore with very little loyalty to brand, i like to own the best phone of the moment and hop between manufacturers. I'd imagine most people on here do the same, with the exception of the insanely irreverent fanboys. Recently (Last 2 years) i've owned.. S2, iPhone 4S, S3, HTC One X and Nexus 4. (Also throw in a couple of dips to Sony and Windows Mobile for brief periods).
First of all, the S4 and the HTC One look like cracking devices. In my eyes they both have positives and negatives and if push came to shove and somebody forced me by gunpoint to pick one, i'd be hard pressed to make a decision.. Perhaps S4 but only because of the battery life and timely updates.. There really is little in it.. Anyone who thinks so is only splitting hairs.
If you're sat using an S2 or a mobile a good 2 years old i can truly appreciate what a jump that the S4 or HTC One to be for you. But if you're the kind of person who upgrades over a 12 month period, there really is little to excite at the moment.
I can't help but feel disappointing..
CPU:
This is the most frustrating topic... We've been steadily increasing in power with little gains in power management, Nvidia tried their best with that '5th core' but ultimately left us all wanting... I'd say the biggest single concern for most smartphone users is battery life now, struggling to make it through a heavy day is part and parcel of owning a mobile.
We are so very close to big.LITTLE kicking in and it seems to be that Samsung and HTC kicked off a little early, shown by the (almost complete) lack of availability of their Exynos variant..
If i bought the S4 or HTC One i'd feel almost cheated if the rumored battery performance of the upcoming CPUs in this segment are anything to go by.
Screen:
Mobile phone addiction aside, one of my other rather 'nerdy' fascination is with audio visual kit, much to my wifes misery.. Screen quality is undoubtedly a big thing for me, yet even i struggle to justify the move from a 720p resolution to a 1080p resolution on a screen only 4.7-5" big..
I've seen the HTC One in person and while i will confess at close proximity i can distinguish the difference, it is by no means the jump the market departments of said companies would like you to think.. I'd go as far to say that most (myself included) would struggle to notice the difference between the two during regular daily use.
LTE:
This is less the mobile manufacturers fault and more the networks but 4G coverage is absolutely woeful when you consider the mass rollout of hardware to utilize. I always thought the S3 LTE was pointless but was convinced this was the early warning sign the governments / networks needed to shift into gear, it doesn't appear to have happened. It's like giving everybody a Bugatti Veyron and telling them they're only allowed to drive it in speed limited residential areas..
I've got friends in the states and U.K and despite the rather gut-wrenching price they pay for LTE price plans, the performance seems poor. I do think we are a good year away from 4G being a realistic benefit to the average consumer, with small pockets of countries experiencing early gains if they live in the capital.
The only positive i can take away from all this is my other half does not have to watch me trawl through reviews, debate the best deal and then watch me giddy on the day of delivery...
Here's hopping next year is a little better!
Have to agree with this, nothing special so far
@OP ( dont wanna quote the whole post lol), trust me when i say that i am one of the biggest phone junkies around, i owned almost all of the flagship of 2012 and plan on owning quite a few in 2013. I see what you're saying when you say " meh" cause phones like the nexus 4, S3, Optimus G and note 2 are already mighty powerful but i think this is where samsung and HTC lead the pack and differentiate themselves with other brands. HTC came out with the best design a phone ever had ( in my opinion) and fantastic sound quality while samsung is expanding its crazy awesome features ( gimmicky for some, absolutely great for me). Its hard to outdo the great phones that came out last year so my question is what did you expect?
I think you need to find more hobbies/occupations in your life tbh.
But to be honest, we are at a point where technology, and especially phones are improving at a very systematical and incremental ways.
Slightly better processor
Slightly better camera
Slightly better screen
Slightly better battery
Really, we will be stuck on this pattern until something revolutionary comes into the mobile market.

Yeah, but with all that, there's a lot that's looked over. Like if you have a Samsung Smart TV you can stream what is on your TV to your phoen anywhere you go.
We now have a IR controller with a built in TV Guide. Built in reminder to remind you also. Links to Rotten Tomatoes for movies.
There's a lot more. I just don't know what is revolutionary anymore. The problem is other technology has to catch up, like TVs, Amplifiers and audio receivers, car GPS, etc. The only thing the phone can do now is control and interact with other things.
What can honestly be revolutionary with current technology and our phones now?

I know but how about getting a different phone if your prime use is phoning, like a 2g that'll give you 2/3 days, or if you're making calls while indoors plug it in or use a land line, flagship smartphones are computing devices not really phones any more.

While I agree that the upgrades in the GS4 are barely a full generation ahead of the GS3, which is unfortunate given how much a jump the GS2 was over the GS1, and how much the GS1 was ahead of anything else at its time... there is a sort-of point about diminishing returns here as well. It's harder to "improve" certain aspects but so much, as we're beginning to hit the limits of what can even be perceived as an upgrade.
I mean, think about the screen. Very low res -> QVGA -> WVGA -> 720p -> 1080p. Well that's great, but for the next generation, where do you go? There's really no perceivable need to put anything higher into a sub 5" device. Maybe flexible screens? Unbreakable screens? etc etc? That's still not gonna actually increase the photonic information presented to your eyes from the device.
Or take the physical phone body. The GS4 is pushing the screen so far that it's easily covering 80-90% of the entire front surface area. So okay, next gen, you make the entire front surface a screen. Then what? Make the phone thinner? Well, at a certain point you hit a limit there as well. People can only grasp and comfortably hold objects of up to a certain depth. When you get it smaller than that, you're basically just printing a screen onto a knife blade. So that's no good...
Let's try connectivity. LTE and 802.11ac? Most cell networks couldn't saturate their LTE links if they tried, they simply don't have the capacity yet. And even if they did... You're telling me you can even find a use-case where your phone is pumping out/in 100+ mbit/s of data? I mean, at home it's nice to move music/videos/files around sure. But I highly doubt anyone is routinely moving gigabytes of data per hour on any sort of mobile device. Once you hit what you need for say HD video streaming... where else is there to go? Again, the next generation doesn't really need to move data any faster than this.
Sensors? Well, there's actually lots of room for improvement here. And also, un-coincidentally, this is where the GS4 has some the of greatest advantage over other current/last generation devices. While we're still pretty far away from a proper tricorder, we can now sense via magnetometer, accelerometer, gyroscope, light sensor, infrared sensor, microphones, thermometer, hydrometer, barometer, and two cameras... But building sensors isn't the hard part. It's building clever software to do something with these sensors.
I could go on further... but the point I should think is clear. Yea, it's a bit disappointing that nothing since the original GS1/GS2 has really been a full "generation and a half" ahead of the competition... but a large portion of that is simply because we're beginning to hit the ceiling with some of these improvements. Yea, in 20 years "phones" will be unpredictably evolved from what we have now. But I bet the screens still won't have any higher effective PPI than what we're approaching now...

Wrong and wrong.
1) There's a reason you need to post elsewhere first.
2) The fact that you say "what the hell" to that requirement further shows you are not yet ready to post in development.
3) Spamming random unrelated comments into random threads is not the way to reach the 10 post minimum
I suggest you start by reading the rules and the stickies.
Have a nice day, and welcome to XDA.
Im only getting it becuase i wanted a smaller note 2 with no spen. The s4 gives me that with plenty of horsepower. Plus the 32gb $250 price point is a good sell. If the htc one had a replaceable battery it would of been a no brainer based on design alone.

I wish we could have a revolutionary phone come out like the Galaxy SII did. Even today, Galaxy SII is unsurpassed with performance. Is there any app or game that it can't run? I mean, it came out nearly 2 years ago, and still has not been matched by an app.
I hope Galaxy SV comes in the way of the revolution.

I never said my prime use is phone calls. I just said 20 min is not the norm. And again where do you get your information. No matter what phone whether it is a dumb phone or smart phone, one of the main focus of a phone period involves making phone calls. Otherwise it would be called a multimedia device and not a phone.

Wait, what, lol!
Pretty sure the Gs1 started the trend there. Gs2 was nice, but nothing revolutionary.... The s3 was by far the best in the series thus far, until this one comes out.
With that said, I like my Note 2 more so than my s3.
Sent from my SGH-T889 using Tapatalk 2
I think the Note series has been pretty revolutionary and Samsung has worked hard to come up with clever things to do with the stylus.
I don't know what big hardware improvements are left to do. The one I would like the most is 3-D capabilities, both screen and camera, like the Evo 3D. I would imagine in the last two years the technology has gotten better and Samsung could market it a lot better than HTC. Plus there is more 3D content than two years ago. Samsung could also do cool things with 3D and the hover technology.

I never said my prime use is phone calls. I just said 20 min is not the norm. And again where do you get your information. No matter what phone whether it is a dumb phone or smart phone, one of the main focus of a phone period involves making phone calls. Otherwise it would be called a multimedia device and not a phone.

Ah well tough break, I guess this phone isn't for you then.

I have to disagree about LTE. That 100mbs conection is shared across possibly 100's of users and it does not take alot to bring it down to it's knees.
Video of sub 500kbs LTE: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a-VVwPqhXwI
That and really 2,3,4,5,10 GB is not really that much data if you plan using the LTE speeds fully. If I didn't have a unlimited plan, my bill would be higher in a month than what my phone cost.
I will say your right about the screen 1080p is good, well really for most 720p does the trick. ( I can still see the dot's on a 720p 4.3in screen though, but most can't.)

suggest me ! i am about to buy an atrix 2 !

hello friends !
i am about to get an atrix 2 from a friend in cheap !
so i was asking whether it would be good to buy this phone !
i know the chipset is old and all and that is not of my primary concern !
things i want to know about are
-battery life (main concern)
-camera and camcorder quality
-headphones output
-screen quality
-loudspeaker output
would also like to know about the jellybean update and how would you compare it to ics ?
i have been through many reviews of this device but would like to get personal user experiences from y'all..
you can also compare this device to the used devices in my signature pic so i'll get a very clear idea !

Yes, it is old, and therefor will not perform like new devices, but it was good for it's time, so is still not half bad.
Battery life can be good, but keep in mind you are buying a used phone, so it will have lost capacity over time. if it is bad, you might want to invest in a new battery.
Camera was one of the best of the time, and still is very good.
headphones work fine, but I doubt you will see anything particularly bad or good with them. keep in mind, as with all phones with the jack on the top, lint from your pants pocket often gets jammed in it, causing loss of audio or poor connections. you can remove it carefully with a bent paper clip (google it).
The screen is higher resolution than most phones when i came out, but it still is not as good as the phones today. Some people complain about a yellow tint, but generally the screen is very good.
Can't say much on the loudspeaker, I have never really used a different phones, but it does sound loud and good to me.
Jelly Bean really speeds things up, and most of the custom ROMs are JB anyways so you are probably going to want it.
And if you dont like to root the phone and flash the roms....
if can always install the official JB leak... this is pretty cool...
JB obviously much better than ICS.... It runs really really smooth...
Its been over an year now.. but still loving Atrix2 alot....

My answers to your query in bold.
Battery life is phenomenal in 2G mode. I suggest you use tasker to toggle 3G/2G according to your need. The phone is strictly average in the present day. In addition, the non-existent Motorola presence in India makes spares harder to come by. So, even if you buy it for a pittance and later need a new battery, that alone would cost you 1500 Rs, and broken screen takes 1month to repair.
I suggest you not to rush into the purchase and regret it later .

perfect answer !
doubts cleared !
thanks buddy...
getting a mint one black & white for 8k buddy !
what do you think. should I ??
Also just to point out, this phone has been locked down a lot by Motorola and our devs have worked hard to find work arounds. If you love flashing Roms and would require an unlocked boot loader then I can't suggest that you buy this phone.
That said, it is not a low end phone. Pretty fast and smooth. It has a good camera that takes quality pictures. Lastly it's pretty durable in comparison to other smart phones.
Press the thanks button if this post helped you

8K is the current going rate for Atrix 2s. What I would suggest is that you be thoroughly aware and ready to accept any pitfalls that might occur in the near future with this phone as far as Motorola support is concerned, if you intend to buy it.Agreed, it is a durable phone, a daily driver and runs Jellybean 4.1. However, what I got to know in the 3-4 months after I bought this phone that it is the Software that makes up the phone, the dev support, the variety of features and custom ROMs available. The locked bootloader on this model makes any stable Key Lime Pie upgrade doubtful, and the customizations for this are even lesser than that for Droid RAZR. And I presume that you know that this phone doesn't support 3G videocall over GSM network. You'll get bored after a day or two with this phone after having owned the likes of Razr and the One X.
I bought this phone over the Galaxy S II in September 2012 , very well knowing that even ICS upgrade might not come for this phone, and that it had more durability and better resolution than the former. But now, it feels ancient in the current lineup of Quads and 2GB RAM phones.
In short:
Don't buy it just because it is being sold for peanuts. Buy it if you really intend to use it despite the abovesaid facts.

right buddy !
i will think again and decide!
thanks for your valuable opinion..
i had an eye on this phone for its battery life though !
Among all the phones that were below 20K INR last year, this is the only one you can run Jelly Bean on. Most of the hardware purchased by others last year, are stuck to GB (and rarely upgraded to ICS). That way, the phone has given enormous return of investment to people who bought it new last year. Even now, if you're looking to run JB - this is one of your best options (assuming you're not interested in micromax/carbon etc) as value for money.
