Advantages of ICS - HTC Sensation

I am a newbie to the HTC sensation as I have had a desire for the last 18 months. The desire was rooted and had many ROMs in its lifetime.
Anyway, I got a sensation today which immediately rooted and installed AHRD ICS ROM. I have been playing with it but havent noticed any major differences other then the layout of a menus are different.
What features is ICS is bringing over 2.3? I can't see any advantages other than a slightly different layout.

Here's a list from Google: http://www.android.com/about/ice-cream-sandwich/
A more detailed explanation: http://developer.android.com/sdk/android-4.0-highlights.html
The main things I like about ICS are the data usage monitor, browser sync with Chrome, face unlock is actually quite decent, much better voice dictation and battery life seems better too.
Of course, there are the visual changes but these are masked by Sense along with the improved keyboard.

Yes thanks, maybe I was expecting too much. I've gone back to 2.3 for the time bring as I find it quicker and more stable.

I've been wondering this same thing. As far as the "good" points mentioned above, I already have a usage monitor with 2.3.5, I use Opera browser which syncs perfectly with my desktop browser, battery life is more than enough for what I need, and I really don't see the point of face unlock. I've actually grown to really like sense. I'll probably try cm9 when (if?) it comes out but until then I'm going to stick with what works.

Fair points!
I used to just use the data monitor widget but it's nice to have it built in, I use Chrome so desktop sync felt overdue. Face Unlock is somewhat gimmicky but it actually works quite well, it's just another option to unlock my phone that I was curious about.

Maybe its just the combination of firmware and radio, but my battery life on ICS (Virtuous Inquisition) is leagues better than I had with GB. Also, using a senseless rom has a lot more visual differences from GB, Sense was tailored to make the user experience uniform across all versions.

Trying to decide which ROM to go with, hoping it fixes my issues

Ok, I was an early adopter of this phone bought it the day it came out July 18th. There are a great many things that disappoint me about this phone, main thing being lack of Froyo at the moment. I'm tired of waiting for samsung, I have little faith it will truely resolve my issues which are the following
In order to use wifi I must reboot my phone, this only occurred after the official JH7 was loaded on it through the over the air update that ATT did.
Constantly having lag all the time, and having apps running that I never ever use and dont want such as ATT Navigator, ATT Family Map, etc. I was able to root the phone and get rid of those but it really hasnt helped.
My stereo bluetooth headphones must be paired EVERY single time I want to use them, its not the headphones because they work perfectly with 4 other devices.
Of course the GPS, it sucks for everyone, any of these or all fix that? Samsung seems unwilling.
So maybe I'm wishing too much but I've watched almost every youtube review of the ROMs that are out there and theres a few details that stick out for things that I want in a rom so I'll detail them here and hopefully someone can point me in the right direction as to which one has the best combo.
1. froyo based, I need 2.2 for certain apps
2. I've heard theres different modems that can affect HSPA, I want fastest download and upload.
3. No wild color schemes, I dont like orange or green. I quite like the look of the phone I think samsung did a great job with the touchwiz and I know theres alot of you out there that perfer the "vanilla" versions of Android. I'm not one of those people. I really loved the look of the cognition rom and some of the things it had visually.
4. Overclocking would be nice but not at the expense of battery life, I'm right in the 24-30 hour range just as most are on here, better would be great if possible.
Go to romkitchen.org and build your own there. There are many threads about the advantages of one modem over another, and you can pick pretty much everything yourself. Then search for CLShortfuse's GPS fix and you'll be set.
Don't worry, its extremely easy

30 hours, you have to consider what you are asking. I want faster dl, no lag, better gps, but I don't want to eat any more battery. It is possible to get 30hrs of light to moderate use. Heavy use will yield 12-18
Andromeda v1.2 is a rom that is pretty vanilla....simple and has the things your looking for. You have to try roms that you think will be what you want.

+2 for Andromeda 1.2.
You can fix all of these if you root the phone. The best ROM out there is the Rom Kitchen (aka "Doc's ROMs") over at romkitchen.org. You can "cook up" your own ROMs using the specifications you want. This is what is so great about the ROM kitchen, especially when compared to the other ROMs like Cognition: you can pick what you want, and don't have to take whatever it was that someone else decided was best. For example, if you want the benefits of rooting but want to keep touchwiz, the ROM kitchen has an option for that. It also lets you pick things like the theme, boot animation, apps, etc. There are 5 captivate modems, and you might just have to experiment to see which one is best. I did this, and it was well worth it. The one that worked best for me was the XXJPP modem. Just load a seperate ROM with each of the different modems, flash each, and download a few things to see which is faster. Also check and see how well the GPS works on each.
Rooting will fix the lag, although one of the ROM kitchen kernels (Glitterball's Voodoo) will improve it even further. There is something called "Project Voodoo" which is a community of developers who build a kernel tweak called Voodoo which completely fixes the remaining lag issue (this is caused by the inefficient way the captivate organizes its folders), and also improves a few other features such as resolution.
You should go try out my ROM its small and fast and stable. I'm getting great battery life and DL/UL speeds. Give it a shot.

[Q] Samsung Droid Charge ROM suggestion?

I'm looking for a rom that's debloated and optimized. I HATE lag. I'd prefer a gingerbread rom if any of them work properly. I also happen to like the default Charge interface (touchwiz?) quite well, although I've never used the default gingerbread interface.
Suggestions? Mainly what I'm looking for is speed, stability, and a good UI. Something that would help as well is if the rom is good at increasing battery life. Battery life is my only real gripe with this phone. I've made decent use of tasker to shut down gps, bluetooth amongst other things to increase it, but it still pales to my old bb phones possible 2.5 days with low use. While battery life is my main gripe, I'd take extra speed more than anything else. I hate waiting for things to load.
Suggestions?
Thanks in advance.
-Sootah
No suggestions?
Still nada? All I want is a debloated ROM with Gingerbread and TouchWiz - unless Gingerbread's UI is better since I happen to be quite happy with TouchWiz.
I can make one I dont have a charge but I can make a touchwiz gingerbread debloated rom

Interesting. How does one go about making a ROM, anyway? I program plenty, but it's all C# .NET and PHP here and there. I have no real experience with anything else.
I also only have a cursory understanding of Linux. I can use the desktop distros well enough, even troubleshoot issues here an there, but my understanding of how the system works is frankly pathetic. Give me almost any problem on a Windows sys and I can fix it, but with Linux I don't know my head from my hind-end.
I'll PM you.
Anyone else have suggestions? Also - I'd love suggestions on good reading material for understanding an d working with Linux. I've played with using it as my desktop OS a few times, but never see the point in continuing to use it since I either have to dual-boot, or run a lot of my apps in a VM that's running some versin of Windows. The only dedicated task I've ever used Linux for is to crack the occasional wireless network.

Cyanogen vs Sense Mods

So I was just wondering what was the huge difference between the two. What are the advantages and the disadvantages, the pros and cons. Please support your reasoning cause I don't know the difference between the two at all (Other than the themes)
Edit #1
-Also if you do support CyanogenMod, which rom do you prefer and why?
Thanks!
Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e
I prefer cyanogen because it doesn't have all of the bloatware that the original rom would include. by doing this, it frees up much more space and also opens up so much more ram on the phone. I'm currently using hypersensation cm7 and I've had no issues so far. I also like the fact that cyanogen is pure android, unlike HTC's sense roms. it's really a matter of preference. some people love the features that sense roms include and some enjoy just having a pure android device(me included). I can add the same features, looks, etc that sense has, but without adding the actual htc sense which saves a ton of room on my phone. it isn't all cluttered with the added htc sense. That all being said, I am very impressed with how fast some of these sense roms actually are and I've tried a ton of them. Some I actually like, but since converting over to no sense roms such as cm7, I've kind of been hooked ever since. basically, it really comes down to user preference.
Don't know if this helped any lol but if it did, kindly hit the thanks button...thanks
you can always private msg me if you have more questions..
Your input was very helpful. But I have another question, how's the battery life with CM7? Would you say its better than sense roms?
that depends on which kernel you're using. I would say battery life is ok with moderate use, but nothing special. I can usually go a full day on a single charge with moderate usage. that being said, I'm seriously thinking of upgrading the battery. I've read about the evo3d batteries that you can use with the sensation.. I may go that route, or maybe check out an anker battery.. it's kind of a tough decision because there are so many pro's and con's on here.. some people love the anker batteries, and some hate them.. so I'm still undecided.
my current kernel is:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=17697845#post17697845
(Bricked-v1.2-final-ondmnd-1536-192.show-p1984)
What is the difference (that you noticed or has been reported), in terms of usability/battery, with bricked vs CM Bumblebee kernels on CM7?
I have just switch to CM7 today after trying out a couple of sense ROMs. The sense roms were very fast (not as fast as CM7 imo) but I really don't use sense and like the tweaks and customisation in CM7. If the battery can hold up I'll be using it from now on.
For me, the kernel that is within cm7 just seemed to drain my battery a little more then when I used the the bricked kernel. Of course everyone's experience is different. But when I was using the bumblebee kernel(after light/moderate use), it seemed like my battery was dying an hour to an hour and a half earlier then when I was using the bricked version. Maybe one is undervolted a little more then the other?? I'm not really sure. But this was just my own experience.. everyones is a bit different I'm sure
Oh ok, thanks. Are you using Hypersensation ROM? How is that compared to CM7 SelfKang Alphafied?
So, I decided to give Cyanogen Mod a try but for some reason Titanium Backup wont find my backed up apps. It's in the root folder of my SD card but it wont detect them.
Sense comes with many widgets, and allows the user to have consistent look n their home screen. The lockscreen is also different than AOSP. What I like the most about sense is that it sports a full featured camera app that is hard to beat. The one on CM7 is anemic in comparison. I also haven't found a keyboard yet that allows me to backup and sync a user dictionary.
People always complain that it's really bloated, but they're just crying because they don't wanna go through titanium backup to remove the extraneous apps.
What CM7 does extremely well is providing its fans a consistent experience of android across all platforms. Name of their game is fast and efficient. You're able to tweak a lot more settings than Sense. But for the speed and efficiency improvements, you're sacrificing functionality and in some cases, eye candy. I might switch over to CM7, once they fix their camera and video recording issues.

I have used AOSP and Sense ROMs on the Sensation and EVO 4G.
AOSP/CM7: This is my preference because it allows for so much customization including power consumption among other things.
It does lack some of the nice apps like the sense camera, however I view that as a nicety for the phone since I'd rather use a good digital camera for pics like that.
AOSP based have always seemed faster due to the minimalistic nature of the ROM.
Sense: Very feature rich with same general user experience across platforms.
OOB experience is also very nice.
I've always found Sense to use more power than AOSP based ROMs.
That being said, it depends on the user and the user's skills/experience on which to choose to use.
Having the customization options available for a noob could result in poor experience and negative feedback.
Finally, a well thought out response between AOSP vs. Sense. Ultimately, what works best for you will be what you're looking for your phone to do. Mission drives the gear.

MIUI or CM7 - Which's better?

im on MIUI 1.11.18 but i was just generally wondering what everyone else thought was better and why?...
sent from Motorola Defy @1.3gz running 2.3.7!
General purpose question.
And you've to test a rom by yourself because, some people like Miui and some others like CM7 ... there is no rule on that!
Me I like both, but what a shame I only have one Defy...
Pepsi and coke. They are both good roms I like cm7 more but that's just me. Find your flavor and if u ever get bored switch it up.
Same as both answers above, you will not get a definite answer. Only way is to try both yourself then decide which one you like best.
If you want speed then CM7 is better, but if you something that looks good and is a lot more customizable then MIUI is the choice.
I am always swapping and changing between them both.
Cheers
But, if you want best of bouth roms, then CMIUI by chile.

CMIUI v2.5 feels stable enough. I updated from 2.0 to 2.5. Both versions are fine.
Isn't a question of what's better, it's defined by your taste. Considering both "stock" versions, with no customizations (like CMiUI or BareBones):
CM7 is stable, fast and light. If you want your phone to run like a bullet, even with several background applications running, this is your goal.
MiUI is quite fast, and beautiful. If you run no background apps (like, i.e., Usage Timelines or Lookout), it'll run as fast as CM7, but it has a poorer performance for gaming or other high-CPU/GPU consuming tasks compared to CyanogenMod.
There are implementations that make things even better: CMiUI claims to make the phone as fast as if it was running CM7 (I don't think so, but I still think it's the best ROM available), and BareBones is supposed to make CM7 phones run even faster (which is perfectly plausible, since it rips off almost every app which isn't indispensable for the phone to work). It's up to you to try the ROMs and find the one that suites better with your personal needs.
How about battery life?
On which one is better?
i've tried cm7, galnet ics miui, and dsj ics miui. can't say i noticed much differences in battery life. they all consumed about 0.5-0.6% of battery life per hour in deep sleep.
performance wise cm7 is still the smoothest and most stable. i have no doubt about that. it has the least troubles/problems.

Switching to a JB based rom (paranoid android) or keeping stock?

Hey all,
I get my phone tomorrow, and coming from an Incredible 2 that was running paranoid android ROM i am anxious to see what this can do with the same sort of software, bigger screen.
I really like stock roms, and although all the software tricks the s3 does sounds good, I dont think I would use many of them.
So question is, are all the JB roms pretty much stable?
The Incredible 2 was missing any camera features (just wouldnt work) and google now was non existant...
But yeah, which way would you go?
I've tried Synergy ROM and also Paranoid Android. Personally I am loving PA right now. In the most recent stable build 1.9.5 nearly everything was working. There are some minor (to me) things like not being able to send MMS, but the fluidity of JellyBean is so worth it and Google Now works flawlessly. With the screen being as big as it is, the on screen keys don't seem to take up too much room for me, and I've really gotten used to them. It also disables the backlight for the physical keys so they disappear in the phone. Again...with the screen size, hybrid mode is really nice. The dual-pane display make going through setting a lot easier and really it just looks fantastic. One huge part for me was the JB messaging app. The stock TW one just looked so ugly, it made me hate texting...
Anyway, some of the motion features were nice, the ones I used the most were the swipe to capture screenshot and also direct call from messaging (putting the phone up to your ear whilst in a text conversation) but the rest were pretty worthless IMO.
If you don't feel like dealing with a not so functioning camera and a few other bugs, I would go with Synergy. Noticably faster than stock, I even got faster data speeds, too. Just anything but stock haha.
Any more questions let me know.

Personally, it never made much sense to me to run a ROM as your DD that disables basic functions like MMS.
I have tried all the available ROMs just to satisfy my curiosity at that point, but I always end up back with the root66 as it is every bit as fast and fluid as any other ROM (claims that another ROM are noticeably faster than a debloated stock setup are total BS) and every function works perfectly. I do run synergy at times also and it's awesome as well.
I have a setup running NOVA Launcher that is awesome. Apex and Nova where always a bit laggy in previous phones but the response is virtually instant and it's smooth and fluid in the G3 so anybodies claims that another ROM can make this setup noticeably faster are just a placebo IMHO.

I'm running Synergy 1.5 right now - no complaints here. Runs smoothly and I'm also using Nova and not seeing any lag. Recently flashed the leankernel and cpu editor script. Will see if that makes any difference in battery life. Even if it doesn't, I won't be upset because let's face it...I'm a heavy user of the device. I've purchased a couple extra batteries (with a charging cradle) that I can just pop in and out when needed. Best solution for me!
