Sorry guy, but you cannot, if you're not (ROOT)-S-OFF

What dose it matter, if you flash a ROM.......... And you don't need root to flash a ROM, you need to either unlock or s-off your phone, that will give you nand access.
I think you need to do some reading first, cause your understanding isn't on the money yet.

Sorry, that's what I wanted to say... need S-off, not root.

unlock your Desire S on HTCDEV, then can flash another ROM.

Most ROMs are rooted anyway and S-OFF will void your warranty so might as well get root
It's also recommend by people here not to use htcdev as if you ever want to send your phone for repair HTC will know that you unlocked the bootloader

One question before flashing Revolution rom?

I need to S-OFF, Install ClockWork Recovery, and obtain SuperCID, then I install the custom rom.
I don't need to root it first, right?
You only need to root and install recovery, personally I never did the siper cid etc and I flash roms on mine.
It will take you ten mins tops but just make sure you read all the documentation first. Oh, do the nandroid back up also incase it goes tits up

I thought you need supercid to install custom rom. And if you want supercid, you need to install ClockWork Recovery and s-off. Am I right?

Super CID helps when you need to flash official HTC Roms/RUU from different carriers or unbranding a carrier phone using the HBoot method. It really doesn't come into play with custom Roms flashed with a custom recovery.
You do need to have either S-Off or an unlocked boot loader to flash a custom recovery such as ClockworkMod. Then you can either root your current Installed Rom or flash a custom rooted Rom.

You need to have ClockworkMod recovery installed to flash custom Roms.
There are 2 methods that allow you to flash ClockworkMod. 1. Run revolutionary to S-off your phone. 2. Use the HTC Unlocker to unlock the boot loader. Method 1 is the best option.
Sorry for the nooby question but what would be an advantage to having superCID and being able to flash other official Roms/RUU's?

I suppose if you bought a phone from a private seller that was unbranded or branded for another area, and you want to use the official ROM for your area.
Some people just like to play with stuff, so...
Other than that, I can't think of any, but who knows?
You can flash any custom ROM you want without SuperCID.

[Q] Some Questions about rooting Desire S

Hi,
I´ve been reading through the forum for the past days, but still a lil bit confused about the procedure. Some threads say no you must do it like this, the other thread says under no circumstances do it like the way in the other thread....
Desire S:
***Locked***
SAGA PVT SHIP S-ON RL
HBOOT-2.00.0002
Radio 3822.10.08.04_M
Android 2.3.5
SoftwareNr. 2.10.401.8
As far as i understand, first i have to use HTCDev to unlock the bootloader. Then downgradehboot to 98
Next get s-off via Revolutionary and Use SuperOneClick to root?
Final follow instructions to install a custom rom klick ?
Forget something? Or is their any easier way?
Sry for my bad english .
Thanks in advance.
I don't know your hboot, for me it was not necessary to downgrade.
But so far you're plan sounds good just backup everything before flashing a new ROM

If I root my DS, using this guide, i'll be able to install ALL custom ROMs?
I unlocked Bootloader via HTCDev, flashed 4EXTRecovery, flashed SuperUser via recovery. When i tried to flash Virtuous Unity, device stucked at HTC logo.
If I use that guide, will i be able to flash custom ROM?
@3st
You don't need to use HTCdev to downgrade.
By using HTCdev you are possible screwing your warranty.
So to simplify,
Option 1) Use HTCdev to unlock, then install custom recovery, then either root or install a rom using recovery.
Option 2) Downgrade, then use Revolutionary to s-off and install a custom recovery, then as above either root or flash rom with recovery.

when you unlock via htcdev you need to flash the boot.img separately when flashing a custom ROM.

There are couple threads in the General section explaing how to downgrade hboot without unlocking at htcdev.com
You should try them first.

Yep
But you need to flash the boot.img of the new ROM, not the old one you already flashed before. (sounds logically, but some ppl. seem to be not able to think logically...)

[Q] help with desire s rooted with htcdev

i have a desire s rooted with htcdev tool, so still s-on, but rooted. i have some questions: how can i bring it from s-on to s-off? because i saw it's easier to manage custom rom.
i'd like to know also how to return to stock rom, 'cause on "androidiani.it" they told me it's different between s-on and s-off devices.
thank you for your help and excuseme for my english, i'm italian and i don't speak it very well...
Well the only difference with S-on and S-off is
1. Need to use fast boot to flash the kernel(boot.img)
2. Cannot change radio, but according to many, you rarely need to do so.
Agree a bit of more work, but it's not that hard with all the command listed.
When I root it well be HTC Dev unlock..

i personally think s-off is a lot more straight forward and easier then unlocked s-on my friend has a htcdev unlocked rooted desire s and he is always complaining about flashing new ROMS where as i'm s-off with 4ext touch and its a simple process of two taps to install the rom
heres what i used (Revolutionary - zergRush local root 2.2/2.3) if you decide to s-off http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1296916

Not to sound like a periwinkle but why do people keep using HTCDEV? I think someone should really put up a sticky stating "Avoid HTCDEV at all cost". It's not as if you really retain your warranty thereafter ...
when i tried that method i got to step 4. then i got a permission denied error when i tried
adb shell
cd /data/local/tmp/
./zergRush
I had a goldcard in at the time, any ideas what could be wrong?
I really dont want to use HTCdeaf
Zergrush worked for my X8. Oneclick seems easier on the Desire S. I'm not conversant with that error & can't really reproduce it at the moment.

You are talking about sense 4 roms but asking for root
You can't just flash sense4 roms...just because you have root access..
If you mean getting SOFF which will render you to flash roms then ..its not possible for you right now..but there is an alternative ...but that alternative costs you your warranty(most probably)..
So decision is yours...
I recommend you to stay stock as of now if you got loads of warranty left

First of all don't confuse with getting "rooted" ..getting rooted will only give you complete access to your ROM..like literally doing anything with any app..also you can control your device completely.
All the custom Roms comes with root access..(see....... this root is actually part of Rom)
For you to flash custom Rom ..you essentially need unlocked bootloader...(having SOFF was mandatory earlier..but HTC started giving unlocked bootloader at the cost of your warranty..so you can Still install custom roms also sense 4 roms)
As you are fine with your warranty getting void
1. You need to unlock your bootloader from HTC dev site..(this is where you may void your warranty)
2.Then you need to flash a custom recovery..i highly recommend 4EXT recovery latest(1.0.0.5) which has smartflash mode(exclusive SON mode)
Get the recovery from this thread..http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1377759..
Flashing recovery has never been this easy...just download the recovery updater and install ..your recovery through an apk just don't forget to say "yes" when asked whether you are SON during installing the recovery..
3. Then after recovery is done...just download your custom ROM..keep it on root of sdcard...and flash it (by following the steps provided in OP of your custom Rom thread)

[Q] htc one S root ALL ASPECTS

Hi , I´m buy one htc one S and i want know more about root, the htc be purchsed in portugal and, i want also one form for root 100% secure.
I've heard about htc quick root , htc all in one S and others, but i do not know on which is more secure
Rooting is 100% safe when unlocking the bootloader via htc. We can't s-off yet so your at no real risk of bricking the phone unless you start messing around with system files. I suggest reading a few guides in the development section first

What is S-on and S-off ?
Unlock the boot loader(what this)?, i´m very noob in this area.
The forum have , tutorial for unlock these bootloader / root htc?
its not a problem ask as many questions as you need (but your kinda in the wrong section for posting questions)
turn your phone off and then hold the volume button down and press the power button and thats your bootloader (use the volume buttons to select options and the power button to select. dont worry you cant break your phone in the bootloader)
when you root your phone htc unlocks the bootloader so you can flash a custom recovery.
recovery is a program that allows you to format the memory card of any data, and lets you flash (install) custom roms of your choice.
when a phones has s-off that means you have greater access to your phone and but as we dont have access to s-off so we dont have to worry about explaining what is does or means.
pop over to youtube and and do some research on what root is and what it can do
when you've decided that you wish to root your phone please visit this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1583427 make sure you read it a couple of times before attempting it
3 more question.
Is even necessary install a custom ROM(step 3)?
There is no risk instal a custom room without knowing the region of htc?

Rooting will void your warranty. It's a good idea to know the region of your phone, so you'll know when OTA updates are sent to your phone. I wouldn't recommend using HTC Quick Root, as it doesn't unlock the bootloader and sometimes doesn't work. You don't need to install a custom ROM.

If you go into the bootloader, it will say S-ON or S-OFF at the top. If you root, you will have S-ON still however you'll be bootloader unlocked which gives you some access, but not as much as S-OFF. There is no method to S-OFF the One S at this time.
