[Q] htc one S root ALL ASPECTS - HTC One S

Hi , I´m buy one htc one S and i want know more about root, the htc be purchsed in portugal and, i want also one form for root 100% secure.
I've heard about htc quick root , htc all in one S and others, but i do not know on which is more secure

Rooting is 100% safe when unlocking the bootloader via htc. We can't s-off yet so your at no real risk of bricking the phone unless you start messing around with system files. I suggest reading a few guides in the development section first

What is S-on and S-off ?
Unlock the boot loader(what this)?, i´m very noob in this area.
The forum have , tutorial for unlock these bootloader / root htc?

its not a problem ask as many questions as you need (but your kinda in the wrong section for posting questions)
turn your phone off and then hold the volume button down and press the power button and thats your bootloader (use the volume buttons to select options and the power button to select. dont worry you cant break your phone in the bootloader)
when you root your phone htc unlocks the bootloader so you can flash a custom recovery.
recovery is a program that allows you to format the memory card of any data, and lets you flash (install) custom roms of your choice.
when a phones has s-off that means you have greater access to your phone and but as we dont have access to s-off so we dont have to worry about explaining what is does or means.
pop over to youtube and and do some research on what root is and what it can do
when you've decided that you wish to root your phone please visit this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1583427 make sure you read it a couple of times before attempting it

3 more question.
Is even necessary install a custom ROM(step 3)?
There is no risk instal a custom room without knowing the region of htc?
The meteod for HTC quick root is safe?

Rooting will void your warranty. It's a good idea to know the region of your phone, so you'll know when OTA updates are sent to your phone. I wouldn't recommend using HTC Quick Root, as it doesn't unlock the bootloader and sometimes doesn't work. You don't need to install a custom ROM.

first id check what version of the phone you've got, download a cpu program from the market, and check your cpu clock speed
if its 1.5 then you've got an s4 but if its 1.7 then its an s3 then if you do decide to flash a custom rom then you'll need to flash the correct rom

No. S-ON means your write-protection for most partitions except system and data is on. S-OFF means that everything can be edited - you can flash older software versions etc.

If you go into the bootloader, it will say S-ON or S-OFF at the top. If you root, you will have S-ON still however you'll be bootloader unlocked which gives you some access, but not as much as S-OFF. There is no method to S-OFF the One S at this time.

You may still be able to receive updates but I wouldn't recommend it.
I believe that you're either S-ON, no-root and apply updates or S-OFF, root and NO updates!
Ok. But what is the best method to root my ds??

Gingerbreak or superoneclick. I prefer Gingerbreak because I found the whole process much quicker

Im not sure if you are able to use the revolutionary tool to s-off your device, because it currently only supports HTC Desire S (saga) 0.98.0000 and 0.98.0002 hboot versions, but not the 2.00..... (coming with android 2.3.5)
you might wanna check htcdev.com for the unroot
I searched for those rooting methods and i find that superoneclick is not stable.
and for gingerbreak i didn't find any guide.
Is there any how to root Desire S?
And also i have S-ON and HBOOT-2.00 0002
Search and you will find....

You need to go to the htcdev site and perform the hboot lock procedure. Search and you will find the post on how to do it.
htcdev method
Hi, sorry to say i have tryied this method from htcdev yesterday and it only unlocks fast boot so you are able to flash a rom via recovery, BUT your phone and hboot will stay in S-ON so you are not able to overvrite hboot version and Radio which is sometimes necessary to support the custom ROM. I doubt if there is a real method to make hboot 2.00.0002 really s-off..

You asked about rooting your phone. By unlocking the bootloader you can now flash a custom recovery which will allow you to flash the SU binary and the Superuser app which will give you root. That is what you asked and that is all ou need to do. Gaining S-Off is just another way to get a custom recovery and flash the SU binary and Superuser app.

With all the respect, yes you can install custom rom with open hboot and you can gain a root(su) user rights, BUT if your rom is not compatible with your RADIO the you are doomed, your wifi, sd card, and another drivers may not be working, and in this case you are unable to overwrite the radio as the S(ecurity)-ON is locking right this. That was exactly my case, i installed S-ON original hboot from RUU 2.00.0002 and the newest Desire S ROM, but my wifi was not working and my sd was not accesible from pc, i went into recovery a tryied to flash RADIO image, but it was not possible, everytime the recovery was parsing the image and then just went back to bootloader main screen like nothing happend, this is because the RADIO is locked, i have tryied more imeges to be sure the first one was not corrupted, everytime the same result..
Still didn't find a way to root my DS.
Can anyone provide me a link to do this?
Go to http://www.htcdev.com press unlock bootloader and follow the instructions to s-off your device. (instead of all the files there, you will need only this http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=727371&d=1316684239. Desire S is not at the supported devices, but it works great.)
It says "unlocking the bootloader will delete all personal data from your device including applications, text messages and personalized settings" which means that it will reset all your phone settings I suppose. If anyone has tried this please inform us what we loose and if there is a better way for avoiding that.

You are talking about sense 4 roms but asking for root
You can't just flash sense4 roms...just because you have root access..
If you mean getting SOFF which will render you to flash roms then ..its not possible for you right now..but there is an alternative ...but that alternative costs you your warranty(most probably)..
So decision is yours...
I recommend you to stay stock as of now if you got loads of warranty left

First of all don't confuse with getting "rooted" ..getting rooted will only give you complete access to your ROM..like literally doing anything with any app..also you can control your device completely.
All the custom Roms comes with root access..(see....... this root is actually part of Rom)
For you to flash custom Rom ..you essentially need unlocked bootloader...(having SOFF was mandatory earlier..but HTC started giving unlocked bootloader at the cost of your warranty..so you can Still install custom roms also sense 4 roms)
As you are fine with your warranty getting void
1. You need to unlock your bootloader from HTC dev site..(this is where you may void your warranty)
2.Then you need to flash a custom recovery..i highly recommend 4EXT recovery latest(1.0.0.5) which has smartflash mode(exclusive SON mode)
Get the recovery from this thread..http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1377759..
Flashing recovery has never been this easy...just download the recovery updater and install ..your recovery through an apk just don't forget to say "yes" when asked whether you are SON during installing the recovery..
3. Then after recovery is done...just download your custom ROM..keep it on root of sdcard...and flash it (by following the steps provided in OP of your custom Rom thread)

questions about unlocking

Hi, I have my Desire S totally with the stock system. So S-On, bootloader locked and oficial rom 2.3.5 branded from Vodafone Spain. Finally I decided to unlock my desire S and to change the rom, etc. After reading a lot, the following are the steps i want to do for that.
Before all I would like to back up my apps, sms etc, contacts are in google so i dont worry about them.. ¿How could I do it with my stock desire S?
Once i have the back up I will perform these steps:
1.- First to downgrade de Hboot ( mine is 2.00.0002 locked) following this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1399331 or this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1443636
I read that this method has benefits over to unlock by htcdev when you want to fash custom roms, and you dont lose the warranty.
In this step what rom should I use to downgrade if my phone is vodafone Spain branded with rom version 2.10.161.3? maybe this RUU_Saga_Vodafone_UK_1.32.161.1_Radio_20.28b.30.0805U_38.03.02.15_?
2.- Once I have the old Hboot 0.98.00000, unlock it and s-off with revolutionary http://revolutionary.io/
3.- Root with this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1296916 or this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
4.- Install 4 EXT recovery http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1377745
5.- and finally choose a rom, maybe MIUI, and flash it.
Any suggestion/correction or advice?
Thanks!

Following various posts especially this one
"How to root, install EXT4 recovery and custom ROM on HBOOT 2.00.0002"
source http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1525100
by N0elite ( thanks - sorry can't thank you on here yet)
I was able to root my phone with S-On
now it has an unlocked root using HTCDEV Unlock | S-ON | HBOOT 2.00.0002 | 4EXT Recovery v2.2.7 RC5
Note on the HTC dev website you have to Select the bottom option 'all other supported models' from the htc dev unlock root website
as desire S is not listed
then I downloaded a fantastic operating system ( rom) called virtuous Saga which has Sense version 3.6 and android 4.04.
( also via this forum - more thanks to mdeejay - again unable to thanks you on the forum yet)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1669497
I did not flash the firmware because I have no idea what that means and it sounded potentially hazardous and I read somewhere you cannot do it with S-ON ( whatever that actually means) - I only installed the saga ROM which works fine with nothing faulty that I have so far tested
I just installed the virtuous saga zip on my sd card, installed it from the recovery screen and then had to flash the boot.img from the zip file using flashboot from my PC
Result - Bluetooth works and my phone has lots of nice updated features also Bluetooth keyboard works perfectly now with this (Again not sure if it makes a difference but this keyboard works using a bluetooth mode called spp rather than HID) And I still have the lovely clock and weather widget - in fact it does not look much different to my old android version - just faster and smoother.
If you try this make sure that your Google account is synced and all contacts are backed up . I also used BookmarksSB to back up bookmarks, Astro to back up all my applications to the sd card, and SMS back up & restore to back up all my sms messages. all free in the Google market.
I also took my sd card out when following the steps to format and clear caches in recovery mode because I did not want to accidentally wipe my SD card.!!
hope this helps

Your goal is to change the rom and backup your phone's current state. Right? You can follow these simple steps:
a. Unlock bootloader by http://htcdev.com/bootloader/
b. Flash custom recovery (4EXT)
c. Backup your phone by using recovery
d. Install new rom, dont forget to flash boot.img separately (because of your phone was unlocked by htcdev.com)
e. [Optional] Root if need
The steps you're going to take are right. You should write down what RUU you have now in case you want to go back.
It looks like you know enough about rooting and flashing and the alpharev way is the best. Via HTCdev you can't install ICS if I am correct.
Good luck and welcome to the world of rooting!

Your goal is to change the rom and backup your phone's current state. Right? You can follow these simple steps:
a. Unlock bootloader by http://htcdev.com/bootloader/
b. Flash custom recovery (4EXT)
c. Backup your phone by using recovery
d. Install new rom, dont forget to flash boot.img separately (because of your phone was unlocked by htcdev.com)
e. [Optional] Root if need

Thanks but I wanted to do it without using the official unlock of HTCDEV to avoid to have to flash the boot everytime I flash a rom and lose the warranty.

The steps you're going to take are right. You should write down what RUU you have now in case you want to go back.
It looks like you know enough about rooting and flashing and the alpharev way is the best. Via HTCdev you can't install ICS if I am correct.
Good luck and welcome to the world of rooting!

Yeah I wanted to avoid HTCdev...
Is there any way to back up my rom before doing anything?
WIth astro can I back up my apps without beeing root?
Anyone knows what room should I use to do the downgrade being my phone branded from Vodafone Spain?
No, there is no "normal" way to keep your apps and their data.
You can gain temp-root and manually zip+copy the /data/ directory (to retain permissions), I suppose. But I don't think it's something you're able to do. And restoring data from it would be quite some pain, too, and require fixing permissions as far as I remember.

No way. You should s-off OR unlock bootloader first.
If you dont want to use htcdev.com to unlock bootloader, you can downgrade hboot and then s-off. Search in the "Desire S General" box, there are 3-4 thread about hboot downgrading and s-off.
Ok so I will do it without back up of apps. Just need to know wich rom to use to downgrade...
Thanks to all!
You could back up the apps without the data using go launcher backup.

Without the data means only the apk, right? So the file to install it that most of them are already in the play store. If it is like that, it has not many advantages, but thank you anyway.

A question about flashing new roms

Hello im a bit confused about a couple of things so i hope anyone could help me :
1- S-off vs Unlocking bootloader : are they equivalent ? i mean if i dont want to s-off my phone can i flash ANY custom rom just by unlocking bootloader and installing custom recovery ? (custom rom such as "Android revolution HD" )
2- I want to flash a "stock rom" that has a different cid than my phones, i have the ruu and i managed to get the rom.zip , how could i flash through sd card ? do i need s-off ? or is unlocking the bootloader enough ? or do i need to do anything else ?
Hope you could help and thanks in advance !
You can flash roms with s on, however it's a bit more difficult than flashing with s off. You have more freedom with s off. It's worth the extra effort to s off in my opinion.

1. No. They are not an equivalent. I suggest you do some research and work out the difference between the two. It's best to learn yourself.
Yes you can flash ROMS with S-On via Smartflash with 4ext recovery. Personally I prefer 4ext Touch Recovery over CWM.
2. You will need to gain SuperCID to flash any RUU that has a different CID then the one you have currently.
I suggest doing a little more research to eliminate your confusion before attempting anything. It's best to know what CAN happen if things go wrong, before they happen.

The steps are
1.Unlock Bootloader. You need to unlock the bootloader to be able to gain some lower-level access to your phone (one example: this will allow you to mount the /system partition in read/write mode so that the root programs can be installed)
2.Install Recovery (enable 4ext smartflash)
3.Root with Super SU (optional)
4.S-Off (Optional)
5.Super CID (optional) allows you to flash ANY ROM to the device regardless of the carrier
6.Flash the ROM
So If you wanna flash a stock ROM and no root you should do steps 1,2,5
Than Root or S-off are optional

It was originally like that, haven't done anything to it
Your HBOOT says that your phone is S-OFF, which means you have full access to it.
On the other hand, not knowing your OS version, I'm not sure you can root using SuperOneClick - since it only works for Gingerbread.
Since you have S-OFF, just go and find "root for S-OFF users" thread in Development and do what is written there.
Download a rooted custom rom (usually a custom rom is rooted) then flash via recovery. You'll have your DS rooted.

Since your DS is already S-OFF you don't need SuperOneClick. You can root by flashing SuperSu from a custom recovery. You may already have a custom recovery installed by the person who S-OFFed your phone. If not it won't be too difficult to install a custom recovery. I recommend you 4EXT touch. You should also make a nandroid backup from the recovery of your current ROM before attempting to flash an alternate one. Titanium backup is also very useful in order to be able to restore your apps and their data after flashing a ROM. The pro version in worth the money.

Doesn't SuperSu require a rooted device? and i think 4ext also requires root access.

4EXT is a Recovery - has nothing to do with being rooted or not rooted

Judging by your answer, I strongly advise you to stay away from rooting your phone, and reading a lot instead.

One you've comprehended and then followed the advice given in the two posts above
Install a recovery and then use it to install a custom pre-rooted ROM. You'll find links in the INDEX thread along with guides, which should be read, see the link in my signature.
Did you buy you're device new?

Since your phone is S-OFF, you can flash a recovery with fastboot from your PC. It may not be necessary if a custom recovery has already been flashed to your phone. Check your recovery before proceeding to flash a custom one.
Once you have a custom recovery installed, your can flash SuperSu from this recovery to your ROM. You'll then have rooted your current ROM and will be able to make backups before trying to flash alternate ROMs. At minimum you should make a nandroid backup from the recovery ; it will allow you to come back to your current ROM in case your not satisfied with the alternate ROMs.
But take your time and read the stickies in order to be sure you understand what you are doing before proceeding further.

Rare, but I seem to remember over a year ago when we all had to use an XTC-Clip that some people got their phones already S-Off.

Not necessarily at all. Regular bootloaders, even when S-OFF, don't allow fastboot commands. If you try executing it on phone that was S-OFF-ed with XTC-Clip, for example, it'll fail.
For that the bootloader has to be re-engineered (or engineering bootloader flashed).
why exactly do u want to root your phone? do u want to flash a custom rom or do u want root access for the heck of it?
if u want to flash a custom rom then i suggest you go through this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1850574
it has links to some other threads.. finally please do make a backup of your original rom in case u dont like the custom rom

In his case, he got his phone S-OFF with a re engineered bootloader (2.00.2002). I find it strange that a stock phone comes pre installed with a ENG bootloader...

I hadn't looked at the hBoot version. Maybe his idea of 'New' and the shop's idea of 'New' are somewhat different - possibly a returned product that they hadn't checked properly before reselling.
