Favorite advantage for rooting? - General Questions and Answers

What is your favorite advantage that you get from rooting your device? To me it's mostly getting rid of the HTC interface in favor of the AOSP flavor.

Definitely having the ability to get rid of bloatware, but on the Bionic it gives me the ability to change the webtop into something closer to a real linux laptop.

Wireless Tether is all I can say...
and bloatware

Remove pop up ad
Be able to remove bloatware
Be able to change permission of apps, to use hacked GPS app.
Titanium backup
etc.

Losing the bloatware and running everything free of those pesky ads. I also like being able to send phone calls from numbers not in contacts straight to VM or having them blocked without the phone ever ringing.

Removing Bloatware and Titanium Backups.

remove apps / backup the DATA from an apk

Cleaning up the device form Bloatware and Apps i never use. Getting the newest Android Version which is not official supported by HTC, i own a HTC Desire.
More App Space, because HTC was a bit stingy with itnernal memory!!!
The best user expirience of my device, to keep it up to date for everyday use. Iam not into buying a new one for at least 1 - 1 1/2 year from now.

Titanium Backup
Ability to edit /system/etc/permissions/platform.xml to give read/write permissions to my external SD card. ES File Explorer and Titanium Backup could not write to my external card until I edited this file.

Uninstalling stock apps, moving apps to sd card and using adblockers

I think most people benefit from having free apps mainly.

Best reason is to install Clockwork Mod Recovery so you can do a complete backup.

[Q] How to painlessly move from Nexus One to Nexus S

I just bought the Nexus S, but I fear the process of importing all my apps and settings from the N1 to the NS. I have about 80 apps, approx 20 paid apps and 20gb used on the external 32Gb memorycard. Of course, I will need to trim down the data amount to lower than 16Gb that is available on the NS. All of the apps that can, are installed on the SD card.
I have both a regular gmail account and a paid Google Apps account that are synked with my N1
So, must I set aside a whole working day manually re-installing all apps and reenter licence codes & settings & synk settings, or can I simple log in to the new phone and experience - like magic - that everything is transferred wirelessly? (I would consider believing in Santaclaus if that happened)
i moved from hero to nexus s and had the same problem, i used titanium backup to restore most of my apps+data, it will automatically link the apps to the market and install them on the next best place (for example it was on ext on my hero but got moved to internal on my nexus s)
but rom-/systemapp-settings had to be reentered manually because the rom got corrupted when i tried to restore my settings (for example google account)
hope this could help you out a bit.
I've gone through 4 phones and my paid apps have followed me. The non paid apps don't though. I definitely recommend Titanium Backup for those as well. Especially if you have game saves or something. I don't mind re-entering information for like connecting to my server but game saves that would piss me off to lose.
The free version I think you have to restore them individually but the paid version you can do them all at once I believe. Coming from the same android version always helps this process too.
Google login on the new phone should push a lot of stuff to the phone, but you might need to make sure the setting on the Nexus One to back up your setigns on the cloud/mothership is turned on. It's not been 100% reliable for me in the past moving from one phone to another.
Agreed with the others who suggest Titanium, it's been a life-saver.
We're assuming you're rooted, because to use Titanium, you must be rooted. Also, get the paid version, it's under $5 and adds a lot of functionality, like batch restore of all your apps.
On caveat when moving from one phone to another (or even one ROM to another) is that when you restore with Titanium, you just want to restore apps + app data...you don't want to restore system settings, this could, supposedly, lead to some trouble.
i see this asked a lot, but i must be confused. i thought that anytime you sign into an android phone with your account, all free and paid apps you have automaitically download to the phone, simply by signing in. i know when i completely wipe my phone, sign in upon boot up, and all apps return like i never even wiped. i can watch them install one by one over a 15 min period.
even my wallpaper gets saved to google's server, and placed back onto the phone as my wall paper. most settings too.
the one thing you will not have saved are texts, oh and any app-specific data from the old phone.
Your app history is tied to the sign in account (free and paid).
The data/settings for the applications is the issue at hand. Some developers sync the data to cloud services, some don't. For the latter you must to the titanium backup deal to move stuff or copy the sd card contents. Some devs opt to just create a folder on the sd card.
Most google applications (obviously) sync data/settings to the cloud. They offer devs a service to do the same. As more devs use it or their own you'll be able to seemlessly switch from device to device withou a hassle.
if i didn't want to use titanium is it as simple as zipping up the content on the nexus one's sd card and then somehow importing all contents (app data, etc) on to the nexus S?
then after that reinstall any apps that i have downloaded or bought?

Yep, it's pretty much that simple.

Looking for a better backup software

Here is the issue. I use Titanium at the moment. I have many apps installed on my phone; so many that I HAVE to use the sd card for quite a few.
Now when I install a new ROM it creates a problem. I can't just use Titanium to install my apps in one batch step since Titanium only installs to the phone by default. I have to select about half. Then move them over to the sd card manually. Then go back and select some more. Then move them to the card. And then do the same with the last remaining apps. This tends to take some time to do and is a real pain.
Is there a backup software that will install everything as it was when it was backed up? If they were originally on the sd card then I want those apps to restore to the card by default. Is there anything like that?
I use Tom tool box pro and I'm pretty sure when you restore it restores everything account info themes all that stuff

Thanks for responding. Restoring account info and especially themes can cause issues jumping between ROMs. Would never do that. But does it restore apps originally on the sd card back on the sd card; or does it install everything on phone? That is all I care to know about.
Not sure what app would do what you want, but I put the word out there with the dev of ROM Cleaner.
His script backs up all your apps, wifi/BT/mail accounts and re-installs them before the first boot is even initiated. It also deletes unwanted apps/widgets that come with most sense ROMs. The great thing is if you dont want to delete all the apps and widgets that his script deletes, you can make it to where it won't. its very customizable in that aspect. Edit: You have to run a separate script to restore the wifi/BT/mail accounts, which you obviously don't need to if you don't want.
Check out his thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1050283
Patraics is a nice guy and VERY quick to respond to any questions you may have. I posted the question not even 5 minutes ago and already got a response saying that he will look into it.
EDIT: Because of his scripts, i don't even use TB anymore. His way is easier and less time consuming.
I'll have to look into it. I like Titanium backup with everything it does. But I don't know why it is so difficult for it to restore aps to the same location where they backed them up from. Going to send a suggestion to TB too.

TB does have some useful features, like freezing and uninstalling system apps. But realistically, if you arent going to use those system apps anyways, you can just have ROM Cleaner delete them before they even get the chance to be fully installed.
On the other hand, TB also does things that as flashaholics, we don't want it to do, like backup app data that can mess up a fresh flash. which is why I don't use it.
Although it does suck having to start angry birds from the beginning every time I find a new daily driver.... lol
Just an FYI though, IF you do decide to go ahead with ROM Cleaner, when it backs up your apps, it doesnt compress them or anything like that, it puts them all in a folder and then just leaves them there, leaving you to do the clean up, if you don't want those back ups to be there anymore.

Why? Does it do what I asked?
My Backup Pro
For backing up apps I have found My Backup Pro to be very simple. Will backup all apps & media and or data. Also had freeze, unfreeze, wipe cache and wipe data capabilities. Curious why storing all apps on system instead of S.D. card at all? Will take up all of your storage space on system and slow your system down. Also if connecting to desktop only have access to S.D. card so that also limits your accessibility to your apps.
Tbo haven't have an issue of apps not going to SD with titanium backup. Exp, my xda app is on the SD and when I restore its back to SD. Dunno how but ill look and see

Titanium does what you ask. You just need to adjust your settings. Go to preferences>restoration location and chose "original location" instead of the default setting that allows titanium to choose.

That makes me feel so much like a NOOB. I have mentioned this in a few places on XDA and other forums. I have yet to have one person mention that there was a setting in the preferences. I swear it was not there the last time I looked but that was.....well quite some time ago. Thanks so much for bringing it to my attention. Noticed that there were many other new selections in there too. I guess I had the better backup software all along.

Incredible "must have" apps to get memory back.

FIRST: A WARNING
These apps require the phone to be rooted to be able to reach their full potential. And as they give you complete control over what to do, it's easy to get your ChaCha f****d up. So a backup with CWM Recovery is highly recommended.
We all know that the internal memory of the Chacha is low, and we are always struggling to have it controlled. Custom roms can make that memory to be really low when just installed, but continued use and trying apps make the memory to be filled with many files that are still there, even when you delete the app and the data associated to that app.
Many people likes to once a month or two, delete data and cache and start again, but for many of us, that's not an option because of the level of customization we have and must be repeated every time that operation it's done.
Enter these three apps, that well used can make you lower the used memory. They allows you to do a mix of regular manteinance and 'once in a while' operations.
AppCache Cleaner Makes easy to clear every day the cache files used by many apps like Market, Maps, Shazam!, and many others. Those cache files are secure and safe to be deleted. The app is easy to be set up and more easy to use. Also, an automatic clean every N time can be set.
SD Maid - System cleaning tool Makes the work of the previous app but with added functionalities, aimed to a less regular manteinance and deep clean. It can find corpses: data files of uninstalled apps that are there wasting space and many other things like log files, duplicated files... that are there making your ChaCha life harder. Some attention is required here because some operations, it not rightly done, can make you have a bad time because of deleting files you wanted not to delete, or that are essential files for your apps or system to run.
SystemCleanup This app is the most powerful of all and also the most dangerous. It has many of the features of the paid version of Titanium Backup, but for free. You can move apps from /system to /data, from /data to /system, odex and deodex them, move from/to sdcard, edit the autorun events they receive, freeze them, make backups... You can get rid of many of the bloatware the ChaCha comes with, and also decide what to do with those apps. The app itself give you directions on some apps that are safe to remove of required not to remove, but you are free to do what you want to with it, so attention must be put on what to do when using it.
I my self was able to remove about 60MB of useless stuff and the free memory jumped to a whopping 92MB of free memory after using them.
Take a look and have luck.
Titanium Backup ★ root - it allows You to "integrate app update to ROM" and save space in user storage.
Also it allows you to remove unused app from ROM and move "integrate" some aplications to ROM.
Most important would be app for recording Calls (both side), do Enyone know that software?

As long as you use the sim you had provided with the phone (e.g. if it's a at&t phone and you have an at&t sim), you don't have to sim unlock the phone. Also, I think c.m. 10.2 has no sim lock. Anyway, your apps and data (e.g. music, pictures) will all be deleted, so if you want to keep them, use a backup app like the titanium backup to keep them all, but if you do so, note that you have to install the app again after the c.m. setup, because as I said, all your apps and data will be deleted. As for the browser, of course you can install any other you want, although c.m. has already one.

Don't feel sorry for asking "too much". That's what xda is for. Anyway, I think you can backup your apps in your external sd card but via a backup app (let's say the titanium backup as far as we've already mentioned it), because your phone doesn't have that option itself - as far as I know, I don't own a samsung phone. Check it out. If you can backup your stuff to the external sd card, I recommend you do it, so you'll be more sure for your precious apps' safety.

Do anyone have a good root free backup solution?

After reading about the problem people have with video playback the latest OTA versions"IN: 11.0.6.7.KB05DA ; EU: 11.0.6.8.KB05BA ; NA: 11.0.6.7.KB05AA "
I want to ask what is the best way to backup as much data as possible before updating in case I need to wipe and downgrade later. On my older phones when I was rooted I would just fire up TWRP and take a nandroid backup before updating. If any problems I would just restore that.
What is the best alternative without root? Adb backup? and manual sync/copy of photos and stuff to the cloud/my computer. I read about adb backup that not working properly for some people and possible being deprecated in the future.
One of the reasons I got the 10+ was for the SD card slot. I use the SD card like a data drive. The internal memory is for the OS, programs and to temporarily store downloads (to check for malware).
Samsung's also have Smart Switch to back up settings data, apps, etc. That backup copy is also on the SD card (haven't tested it yet).
Right now I can do a complete reload with little or no internet connection and be good to go in about 2 hours.
You can use external memory instead though. Cloud crap takes too long, same with Playstore.
Use ApkExport to copy all your apps and updates then load directly from those copies.
Save all critical data on the external hd. Make sure your bookmarks are recoverable. Any app that allows you to backup their settings, do so and add those as well.
Make sure you copy your contacts and text messages.
I keep master folders on my phone for documents, music, vids, dcim by year, etc that match to those stored in my laptop which serves as a secondary backup to my SD card. Keep at least two backup copies and store in separate locations. Ideally one should be completely off line and stored in a earth grounded metal box.
Hdds are preferable to flash memory.
Workout a plan within the limitations of your device and software before you need it.
