Will native email from ICS work on Gingerbread? - HTC Inspire 4G

As anyone who uses IMAP on a Gingerbread or earlier ROM will tell you, mail sent from the phone is NOT synchronized to the server, completely contrary to the intent of that protocol. Might as well be using POP instead.
It looks like that problem has been solved with ICS. I was wondering if its possible to somehow get the native ICS mail app installed on an earlier ROM, and if so, how one might go about doing so.

My email syncs to my IMAP work account, I just had to setup a second sent items folder. Email I send from my laptop goes to one sent items, from my phone to a different one. Well I didn't set it up my IT dept did but there is a way to do it.

Nope. I think you're mistaken. Messages sent from the handset are stored on the machine, and are not uploaded to the server. This is a known Android big which has been fixed in ICS, but is still a problem for earlier versions.
If you are in fact correct, then it sounds like your IT department might have found a workaround. Speak with them and confirm Can you ask them what they did?

Here is the answer. IMAP saves sent items in an inbox.sent folder and outlook saves sent items in a sent items folder. Usually only one of these is selected in the folder options.
Go to your outlook (I assume you use outlook) and go to Tools, Account Settings, double click on the email account, select the folders tab and look for sent items and sent folders. One will be checked and the other will not be. Add a check to whichever is not checked so both are selected, you should be done. Hope this helps.

Here's where I think you're mistaken.
Android versions prior to ICS do NOT save outgoing messages to the server through the native email app. This is a known problem. Check the below post for my comments, and google 'android not saving IMAP sent' or terms similar, and you'll see what I mean.

It's not pointless for those of us who have the problem, unless you're suggesting that all the people in these threads are suffering from the same mass delusion. If you don't have the problem, then whoopee for you, but frankly you're not helping here. If you don't have the problem and you don't have a solution, maybe your time would be better spent in another thread.

Look, I told you the solution, did you turn on the other sent folder or create one if it wasn't there? If you didn't even try then do so. If you did and it still didn't work then I have no idea because this is how my IT guy fixed it. Perhaps our mail servers are setup differently from yours.

Really?
I think I've had about enough of your attitude.
You have no technical background yourself, you tell me that your IT department did 'something' to make it work and then have the temerity to suggest I'm either too ignorant or too lazy to try your idea. Obviously I've been through all your 'suggestions' otherwise I wouldn't have posted the links which YOU obviously haven't bothered looking at yourself.
This is a known Android problem and if you can't help answer the question about how to get the ICS native email app to function properly on a Gingerbread ROM, then please spare me any of your further inane posts.

Wow! Sorry to but in but the forums are a little slow and I am bored. Just had ankle surgery and few inches of snow on the ground has me stuck inside. Bill, geologistguy did offer help with a workable solution. Googling the net has shown that what he has stated has worked for some. And I really don't see where he gave you any attitude. Seems your anger needs directed at the android OS and not him.
Getting the thread closed isn't going to help anyone out.

Wow. Seems everyone is an analyst today.
Ok, here's the point.
His solution is NOT workable. Not on this ROM or handset, at least, and there's ample evidence provided to that end.
When someone doesn't read the post to apprehend the problem, answers a question that isn't asked, makes assumptions about what you've tried or not tried, offers tips that are not germane to the question (IMAP sent items not synchronizing to the server from Android has nothing to do with Outlook configuration) and then uses the words "this is pointless" and subsequently "look, I told you the answer" when given specific links to research the problem, then THAT'S where the attitude is. And I'll thank YOU to please not exacerbate the situation.
That said, hope your ankle is feeling better... it gives you a great reason to not have to shovel the snow. ;-)

Have you tried that K-9 email application? I know we shouldn't have to have another 3rd party app to do what stock should but from I seen in my searching it does what you want. Also gives your battery some exercise too. Gets good reviews and it is free.

I agree with your point. Actually, I've been using Enhanced Email which is quite nice, but has some shortcomings. The native app, given its tight integration with the OS and more robust synchronization settings, would likely be the better choice. That's why I've been on a search to find a fix for the native app, or find a way to 'port' the new (properly functioning) native Email app from ICS to Gingerbread.

Gotcha! Keep your fingers crossed as you never know what might happen on XDA. Just yesterday I finally updated to a new 2.3.5 ROM from the WCX Illuminati Series. I was using an almost stock version of 2.3.3 from Juicy. But evidentally this new ROM supports the MAP bluetooth protocol. So now my text messages and possibly my emails may be seen on my truck Headunit when they come in. Haven't tried it yet for obvious reasons though.

Yahoo is known for having client issues. Main reason it only supports pop3 in most PC based clients. Did it work on stock?

Yahoo is a nightmare. My mom was having all sorts of problems, both with the app, and through the generic mail smtp set-up (she has an inspire also).
After trying a bunch of stuff for a bunch of weird problems, I finally found one solution that worked... I got her the hell off of yahoo and onto gmail.
Not a practical solution for many, I know, but she's a lot happier not having to fart around with yahoo's quirks anymore.
For some reason, I only have issues with Yahoo mail when on wifi. When I get the user password error, I shut wifi off and switch to cellular data and the problem goes away. It is not all the time, just sometimes. Most of the time, it works fine.

Well, I still have mine, I just don't use it.
It's the opposite, a total spam-fest. If I had that account set up and syncing on my phone, the notifications from that alone would kill my battery.
The only purpose it still serves is being my paypal login. When I get around to it, I'll probably see about changing that as well.

Strange Text messages

This is tough to explain...
At random points a friend of mine tells me that I am sending stange text messages that look like this:
"ME:<Subject: > - What game?"
According to what I see in my text history, It is being sent from my phone. Now out of the 20 or so people I have active text sessions with, she is the only one.
I've been through various ROM's and have had this problem follow. Logic tells me its her phone based on the facts but I can't prove it. I've done a Google search and that returned nothing. Searched around the XDA site and didn't turn up anything.
Has anyone experienced anything the same or similar?

It is your phone and it is prolly an app you install since it follows you, or a friend in your midst as they follow you too.

If its showing as sent from your phone in your phone, then logic would dictate that your phone is the source of this issue. When switching roms, did u do a full wipe before reflashing? Are u sure u are not restoring any apps or configurations whether if its synced with Google or titanium backup? Perhaps u have apps stored on your sdcard? Just a few things to think about.

Why on Earth do people use MMS? Am I missing something here?

Every time a device gets AOSP (for the first time) I see a flood of posts whining about MMS being broken. (I've had an Evo 4G and an Evo 3D and saw this on both when they first got AOSP, now I see it in the unofficial CM9 thread here.)
Why MMS? What's good about MMS that you can't get with any other app or service?

Yea.. I gather that as well.
How else would one sext and send nudes?
1) It's universal.
No matter what phone the other person is using, chances are it supports MMS.
2) It's in-line.
Unlike email, you can just go "Here's a picture" instead of "I just sent you an email, you should go check it out"

My girlfriend and I send MMS's (plural?lol) all the time. Sometimes she wants to send me something she saw or maybe a new outfit she bought With email I don't always have autosync on for battery life and its just that extra hassle. If I'm trying to send something pretty high resolution I will use email though since it doesn't compress it.
its the easiest and fastest way to send a pic to a person on another mobile phone, any other mobile phone, any OS, any platform, any carrier.

I guess I just don't get why you couldn't just email pictures or videos. All you have to do is tap after you've taken your picture and the UI asks how you want to share it. [Request] Switch default 'New Contact' save location to Gmail instead of phone.

This may be a bit picky, but there I have found no way to set the default location a new contact is added to. By default, contacts are saved to the phone, but I use Gmail. I know right. This is a pretty big damn bug if you ask me. Probably one of the biggest if you rely on dependable contacts and phone numbers. It wouldn't be so bad for the everyday user but we are constantly formatting our phones. It was never never ever never an issue before. Everything was saved n Google period. Why do we even need separate sim and phone contacts? I wonder if it has something to do with ATT contacts app. Has anyone called ATTor HTC?

Thank you very much. Good to know you are trying.
You are not picky buddy. It is annoying.

Please explain to me...

Hey guys,
Could someone please explain to me why the HOX is so inferior to the iPhone 4S as far as sending and recieving pictures via mms and email. I very rarely am able to actually recieve pics sent by text, and I have to send pictures individually over email versus 2,3 or even 4 pics per email on the iPhone. Video's are totally out of the question on the HOX. This is really the only complaint I have with the HTC. Is thee anything i can do, or are we just screwed?
I send and receive images all the time with no issues. Perhaps you're misplacing blame?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
It's not that hard to add another contact in the "To" line in the Gmail app.
And are you using a different SMS app? Maybe it's AT&T, I only get EDGE on my HOX cause I'm on T-mobile.
From my sexy white, Nocturnaled HTC One X
Yeah I've never had a problem with mms messages either, and I can also attach as many pictures to an email as I want. I think you've got something else going on because these definitely aren't HOX related issues.
He probably doesn't know how to use anything besides an iPhone, I just sent an email to 3 people without having to remake the same email.
From my sexy white, Nocturnaled HTC One X
I don't use the stock mail app, but gmail allows me to attach plenty of pics. My brother has a 4s, even he can't send large vids via email, we use YouTube for that.
Are you stock or rooted or ....can you be more specific?
No problems here bro. Stock messaging app and gmail work fine too... So does k-9 mail..
Sent from my HTC One XL using xda app-developers app
Not receiving sms/mms probably has to do with the carrier and not the phone. I've never had any issues sending or receiving picture messages.
As far as sending multiple pictures per email, this isn't that hard either. Open gallery, press the share button and chose your method (example Gmail), then select the pictures you want to attach and hit next. Gmail will open with all the pictures attached and all you gotta do is enter email address (one or multiple).

He probably doesn't know how to use anything besides an iPhone, I just sent an email to 3 people without having to remake the same email.

Pretty easy to see how you got to 2,000+ posts. Do you ever add anything constructive?
Misplacing blame? What a bunch of over sensitive girls. I asked some simple questions and asked for advice. I have never been able to get a video to play from gmail on this phone. I am constantly having people ask me if I got the pictures they texted me. Several times today I tried to email 4 pictures at once. Every time it failed. Finally had to end them individually and they all went through. I'm on AT&T. Handcent SMS and the stock ICS email app.
Metalhead, you seem to be the only one mature enough to give a straight answer. What do you suggest I look at to fix these problems?
I have had the same problem with the mail app connected to exchange on wifi, it wouldn't let me send an email with pics. It might just be the stock rom causing issues.

Need some more information. Rooted? stock? rom? Handcent works fine for me, i'm rooted, can add multiple pics, it does resize them cos its an 8mp camera, i use the gmail mail app and can easily send to multiple recipients with multiple attachments. Dont use the ICS mail app, like gmail one better.
"Misplacing blame" was a fancy way of calling you an idiot. You didnt ask specific questions as much as you did complain and compare the one x to the iPhone.
Maybe if you weren't a retard, you'd be able to figure out how to use your device. Good luck, chief.

Oooook guys. Chill out .
OP, try a third party SMS/MMS application. Also, feel free to add more data as it may help everyone better understand your plight.

Coming from an iPhone, I definitely recommend the JB Messaging (formerly ICS Messaging) from the Google Play Store.
Pair this with SMS Popup and it is really great, especially compared to BiteSMS.

Ha don't confuse him with your fancy way of insulting him. :good:
OP, your scenario is strange. I haven't had either of the issues that you are experiencing since I've had my HOX. MMS messages send and receive just fine for me and I have no problem sending multiple pictures via the Gmail app.
In the past I have had these issues on other phones, but it was usually due to AT&T network issues. Have you tried holding the power button down for ten seconds? This is supposed to simulate a battery pull. Beyond that, maybe a master reset?

Thanks for the heads up! JB Messaging is awesome.

As far as the email issue, some more info would help. Is it gmail, exchange, hotmail, or what?
You have to remember that you're sending what can be large files, and you can end up with a size limitation there, which largely depends on your email provider and what they allow/tolerate.
As to the MMS issues, do try stock. 3rd party apps have been known to not always play nice on various devices, particularly brand new ones, and especially brand new ones running custom ROMs. So it could be that, or carrier issues, or the other party's carrier, etc.
Finally, before completely knocking the phone and pissing off people who a) like said phone and b) actually know a few things that can help, check the attitude and tone it down. Don't get pissed at the responses you get when you march in the door and, quite loudly, let your ignorance show.

SoberGuy has sober wisdom.
Actually.... Some of the most insightful things I've heard have been from drunk people.
I haven't had the photo problem, the video issue was just that my files were too large, I toned down the quality and was fine.

What the heck?
He said this was his ONLY complaint.
Don't jump down his throat because he doesn't think it's perfect.
