[Request] Switch default 'New Contact' save location to Gmail instead of phone. - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

This may be a bit picky, but there I have found no way to set the default location a new contact is added to. By default, contacts are saved to the phone, but I use Gmail. I never remember to change when I'm trying to get all these girls numbers (yeah right) so it would be nice to have the default save to Gmail.
If anyone has an idea let me know!

You can hit menu, settings, manage contacts, then copy, and choose to google.
Sent from my HTC One X using Tapatalk 2

Thanks. Yeah I used that, but my problem is remembering that they even got saved in the wrong spot. I'm going to clear data one day and lose numbers.
I just want the default option in a new contact to save to Gmail. My Inspire on Sense 3.5 had the option.

Hi Buddy,
Mine always save to Gmail.
Pretty sure this will do it.
When you're in people click phone book in the top left and only select Google.
Otherwise just remember to select Google when you create the contact - mine seems to default to Google though.
**Edit** I realise that is just what displays in the phonebook so it probably doesn't make a difference.

Actually I've noticed this too and I'd much prefer to save to Gmail then the phone. How do I do that?

Yup. I got a number at a bar the other night and obviously after a couple drinks I couldn't remember to select Gmail. My old Inspire had an option to select the default save to
Glad I'm not the only one annoyed by this. Wish I was smart enough to be able to do it myself, but I hope someone can work up a fix.

Hey Buddy,
I know this sounds like BS but what I said earlier actually works for me - I actually tested it this time... haha
When I tick phone whilst google is selected then back out of it or hit phonebook again it reloads the people view then when I hit add phone is now default location.
Then I unticked phone hit back or phonebook again - people reloaded again and when I went into add Google was the default.

didnt work for me. even with phone unticked and contacts not showing for phone, only google, i add a new contact and it still goes to phone. how do you get it from phone in to google? wen i try to import from phone it says it cant find a vcard on phone.
Edit: figured out how to copy phone contacts to google, was mentioned earlier.... but you have to copy them all! you cant choose what you want. This is some messed up stuff. I think i'll try the aosp contacts instead.

I know right. This is a pretty big damn bug if you ask me. Probably one of the biggest if you rely on dependable contacts and phone numbers. It wouldn't be so bad for the everyday user but we are constantly formatting our phones. It was never never ever never an issue before. Everything was saved n Google period. Why do we even need separate sim and phone contacts? I wonder if it has something to do with ATT contacts app. Has anyone called ATTor HTC?

I bet you just hit the nail on the head about the AT&T contacts. If you have android there is absolutely NO reason not to sync with gmail. We shouldn't have to make sure we're choosing it every effen time.

This issue is also on the international version as well so it's most likely some stupid oversight on htc's part. Tried looking through some files in apk to see if it may be an easy switch but have not found anything yet but will keep looking

Thoughts so far

So far I love the phone. The feel and weight of the phone just seems better then my Captivate(which I gave to my wife). After not getting data on the phone unless I had WiFi on kind of sucked, but if you make a new network. You will be able to gain data back.
The only thing I am not liking is when I set up my HTC sense with Facebook, it put all my friends from facebook into my contacts list in my phone. I do not want all my friends on the list. I have tried and figure out how to delete from the list but cant figure it out. Anyone know how?
I also side loaded a few apps using the SLW program, once you download HTC sync on your computer it was easy.
I cant wait until this phone gets rooted so I can go in and change some stuff around, like ringtones. You can have custom ringtones when the phone is not plugged in to the USB but once you plug the USB in, it reverts back to the stock ringtones because it thinks shuts off your SD Card. Well you know what, I guess I can have the option to only have it charge will plugged in. That might work.
Other then that me loves the phone. Glade my wife had an upgrade so I could get the phone for $79.99 from Costco and a free charger with it. She loves my old Captivate so I was like hell ya ill trade ya!
Ha I love it...got a feeling alot of wives will be getting a captivate tommorow

I dont regret it for a second, yeah no Real 4G but we have root, roms and radios NOW.
Also, for those that just want to install apps and leave the phone stock you can go to this thread created by me: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=943174
The phone feels so polished and the screen is awesome, no Craptivate screen but it will turn heads.
We have accomplished so much in so little time.

Ok I know what you're saying, and I didn't even realized my phone did that until you just mentioned it. I didn't see a way to get rid of them either.
If this is bothering you because you have to scroll through so many more names to get to the contact you want to dial, have you tried the t9 smart dialer feature? Lets say you want to dial 'John', instead of scrolling all the way down to his name, just spell out his name via t9 (5 for 'j', 6 for 'o', 4 for 'h', etc). The contacts that match what you're typing will appear and you don't have to scroll through all the names. My Evo and other HTC sense phones do this ( stock android doesn't, but you can download other dialers in the market that do). If you already knew this and just don't want the names to appear, can't help you there.

i went to check this out in the store today. a few thoughts
-size is great. i compared it to my nexus one w/seidocase and it is only slightly larger... like less than a .25" larger in width and length
-weight is great. very comparable to n1 w/case
-sense 2.0 looked pretty slick.
-very fast... zero lag.
-my only stickler was the screen. i could see the "grid" dots on the display unit. is this typical of slcd?
Love it already and havent had it 5 hours yet, beats my old htc surround hands down.
This kicks the captivates ass all around, even unrooted with stock rom. Soooo glad I pulled the trigger... nice to have a decent exchange email client as part of the basic package (sorry touchdown, but the integration is a big plus... I hated the separate address books).
The more I use my phone the more I realize everything works and works well.
Have installed pretty much everything there is and it plays or runs them without a hiccup.
Obviously the only apps it will not run are the ones that require root. My plan is to do this very soon so I can take advantage of those as well.
Every single game I've installed is smooth with no lag.
Emulators work with zero issues, my plan is to try the the psx one next.
You can not measure the battery life right away, it has to get used to a few charges first. See the Desire HD forums and they will say the same.
I've made some calls and can say that it sounds great, I've tried both the loudspeaker and the ear speaker and both sound fine to me.
Obviously the small speaker will not be that loud especially at first. Still planning to use DSP Manager to see if it fixes it.
I've still to try out the gps while moving in the vehicle as well.
Build quality is very satisfying and is what's expected from HTC.
Where I had trouble getting 3G I am now getting a constant H+ according to the phone.
What else can I say I made an excellent choice and with the Sideload Wonder Machine, root, radio and custom ROMs there's room to make this phone even better with those options.

Will native email from ICS work on Gingerbread?

As anyone who uses IMAP on a Gingerbread or earlier ROM will tell you, mail sent from the phone is NOT synchronized to the server, completely contrary to the intent of that protocol. Might as well be using POP instead.
It looks like that problem has been solved with ICS. I was wondering if its possible to somehow get the native ICS mail app installed on an earlier ROM, and if so, how one might go about doing so.

My email syncs to my IMAP work account, I just had to setup a second sent items folder. Email I send from my laptop goes to one sent items, from my phone to a different one. Well I didn't set it up my IT dept did but there is a way to do it.

Nope. I think you're mistaken. Messages sent from the handset are stored on the machine, and are not uploaded to the server. This is a known Android big which has been fixed in ICS, but is still a problem for earlier versions.
If you are in fact correct, then it sounds like your IT department might have found a workaround. Speak with them and confirm Can you ask them what they did?

Here is the answer. IMAP saves sent items in an inbox.sent folder and outlook saves sent items in a sent items folder. Usually only one of these is selected in the folder options.
Go to your outlook (I assume you use outlook) and go to Tools, Account Settings, double click on the email account, select the folders tab and look for sent items and sent folders. One will be checked and the other will not be. Add a check to whichever is not checked so both are selected, you should be done. Hope this helps.

Here's where I think you're mistaken.
Android versions prior to ICS do NOT save outgoing messages to the server through the native email app. This is a known problem. Check the below post for my comments, and google 'android not saving IMAP sent' or terms similar, and you'll see what I mean.

You have no technical background yourself, you tell me that your IT department did 'something' to make it work and then have the temerity to suggest I'm either too ignorant or too lazy to try your idea. Obviously I've been through all your 'suggestions' otherwise I wouldn't have posted the links which YOU obviously haven't bothered looking at yourself.
This is a known Android problem and if you can't help answer the question about how to get the ICS native email app to function properly on a Gingerbread ROM, then please spare me any of your further inane posts.

Wow. Seems everyone is an analyst today.
Ok, here's the point.
His solution is NOT workable. Not on this ROM or handset, at least, and there's ample evidence provided to that end.
When someone doesn't read the post to apprehend the problem, answers a question that isn't asked, makes assumptions about what you've tried or not tried, offers tips that are not germane to the question (IMAP sent items not synchronizing to the server from Android has nothing to do with Outlook configuration) and then uses the words "this is pointless" and subsequently "look, I told you the answer" when given specific links to research the problem, then THAT'S where the attitude is. And I'll thank YOU to please not exacerbate the situation.
That said, hope your ankle is feeling better... it gives you a great reason to not have to shovel the snow. ;-)
Have you tried that K-9 email application? I know we shouldn't have to have another 3rd party app to do what stock should but from I seen in my searching it does what you want. Also gives your battery some exercise too. Gets good reviews and it is free.

I agree with your point. Actually, I've been using Enhanced Email which is quite nice, but has some shortcomings. The native app, given its tight integration with the OS and more robust synchronization settings, would likely be the better choice. That's why I've been on a search to find a fix for the native app, or find a way to 'port' the new (properly functioning) native Email app from ICS to Gingerbread.
Gotcha! Keep your fingers crossed as you never know what might happen on XDA. Just yesterday I finally updated to a new 2.3.5 ROM from the WCX Illuminati Series. I was using an almost stock version of 2.3.3 from Juicy. But evidentally this new ROM supports the MAP bluetooth protocol. So now my text messages and possibly my emails may be seen on my truck Headunit when they come in. Haven't tried it yet for obvious reasons though.

Please explain to me...

Hey guys,
Could someone please explain to me why the HOX is so inferior to the iPhone 4S as far as sending and recieving pictures via mms and email. I very rarely am able to actually recieve pics sent by text, and I have to send pictures individually over email versus 2,3 or even 4 pics per email on the iPhone. Video's are totally out of the question on the HOX. This is really the only complaint I have with the HTC. Is thee anything i can do, or are we just screwed?
I send and receive images all the time with no issues. Perhaps you're misplacing blame?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
It's not that hard to add another contact in the "To" line in the Gmail app.
And are you using a different SMS app? Maybe it's AT&T, I only get EDGE on my HOX cause I'm on T-mobile.
From my sexy white, Nocturnaled HTC One X
Yeah I've never had a problem with mms messages either, and I can also attach as many pictures to an email as I want. I think you've got something else going on because these definitely aren't HOX related issues.
He probably doesn't know how to use anything besides an iPhone, I just sent an email to 3 people without having to remake the same email.
From my sexy white, Nocturnaled HTC One X
I don't use the stock mail app, but gmail allows me to attach plenty of pics. My brother has a 4s, even he can't send large vids via email, we use YouTube for that.
Are you stock or rooted or ....can you be more specific?
No problems here bro. Stock messaging app and gmail work fine too... So does k-9 mail..
Sent from my HTC One XL using xda app-developers app
Not receiving sms/mms probably has to do with the carrier and not the phone. I've never had any issues sending or receiving picture messages.
As far as sending multiple pictures per email, this isn't that hard either. Open gallery, press the share button and chose your method (example Gmail), then select the pictures you want to attach and hit next. Gmail will open with all the pictures attached and all you gotta do is enter email address (one or multiple).

Pretty easy to see how you got to 2,000+ posts. Do you ever add anything constructive?
Misplacing blame? What a bunch of over sensitive girls. I asked some simple questions and asked for advice. I have never been able to get a video to play from gmail on this phone. I am constantly having people ask me if I got the pictures they texted me. Several times today I tried to email 4 pictures at once. Every time it failed. Finally had to end them individually and they all went through. I'm on AT&T. Handcent SMS and the stock ICS email app.
Metalhead, you seem to be the only one mature enough to give a straight answer. What do you suggest I look at to fix these problems?
I have had the same problem with the mail app connected to exchange on wifi, it wouldn't let me send an email with pics. It might just be the stock rom causing issues.

"Misplacing blame" was a fancy way of calling you an idiot. You didnt ask specific questions as much as you did complain and compare the one x to the iPhone.

OP, your scenario is strange. I haven't had either of the issues that you are experiencing since I've had my HOX. MMS messages send and receive just fine for me and I have no problem sending multiple pictures via the Gmail app.
In the past I have had these issues on other phones, but it was usually due to AT&T network issues. Have you tried holding the power button down for ten seconds? This is supposed to simulate a battery pull. Beyond that, maybe a master reset?

Thanks for the heads up! JB Messaging is awesome.
Beamed from my KingCobra1X powered HOXL on Rogers.
As far as the email issue, some more info would help. Is it gmail, exchange, hotmail, or what?
You have to remember that you're sending what can be large files, and you can end up with a size limitation there, which largely depends on your email provider and what they allow/tolerate.
As to the MMS issues, do try stock. 3rd party apps have been known to not always play nice on various devices, particularly brand new ones, and especially brand new ones running custom ROMs. So it could be that, or carrier issues, or the other party's carrier, etc.
Finally, before completely knocking the phone and pissing off people who a) like said phone and b) actually know a few things that can help, check the attitude and tone it down. Don't get pissed at the responses you get when you march in the door and, quite loudly, let your ignorance show.

I haven't had the photo problem, the video issue was just that my files were too large, I toned down the quality and was fine.

Google Smart Dialer from Nexus 5 on Moto X?

Has anyone been able to get the smart dialer from the Nexus 5 working on the Moto X? I have a Nexus 5 and and the smart search feature in the dialer was actually really nice to use. For those who don't realize what I am talking about- this is the feature in the dialer where you can search "AutoZone" within the dialer and it will pull up the 3 listings closest to you. Also when you call local businesses it displays their name and picture instead of just the phone number.
I'm trying to decide between the Moto X or the N5 and it is such a hard decision every little thing is factoring in. Thanks!
Edit:
Some people later in the thread have had success with this dialer apk in the download link below:

Let me tell you from my own experience. I bought a nexus 5 moments after launch. Upon receiving it, I liked it but its really barley different from the nexus 4 (which I was coming from) other than kit Kat. Fast forward 3 weeks, I sold my nexus and bought a moto x. I'm much happier with this device. Its way more innovative than the nexus 5. Touchless control and active display are amazing. As far as hardware I notice no difference. The display is just as good but in a different way. And the camera may not be better but takes good pictures. Overall I'm 100% happy with my decision and will never look back.

Thanks for weighing in there. I actually think the Nexus 5 is an amazing phone. Each phone has pros and cons. The Smart Dialer being a pro of the Nexus 5 since I was actually using the feature. So back to my original question, anyone? anyone?
I'm guessing it is more than just installing the N5 dialer apk otherwise it would be readily available for install.

The dialer is available with directions for some other phones. I tried and it didn't work on the Moto X though. I'd love to figure out how to get it.

It doesn't work though.
Thank you just want to check it out.
How's the new dialer any different from Google now? I mean besides the caller id feature i can just Google "autozone" and it will give me the all info like a dialer. Enlighten me lol

Less steps and a bit cleaner but honestly it really isn't much and I wouldn't let it effect my decision that's for sure.

Feels more like you are searching for someone in your contact list vs. googling the number. Time wise it is probably the same if you are quick with google now. It is nice having the functionality in the dialer app vs switching over to google now if I am already in the dialer. The caller id feature is what I really like about it though. Say yesterday I called Autozone and then I need to call them again today, I can completely skip over opening google now and repeating the search process, just go straight to my history, see the name and location of the Autozone (especially helpful I I had called multiple locations) I called and click to call, no searching, no trying to remember what time of day I called them yesterday, what number it was, etc.

If you called autozone the it would be in your call log either way.

What if you call Autozone and they don't have the part and you need to call Carquest or napa. I can see how the smart dialing could be convenient.

Different is that u can search for business right from dialer and get results. Its like yellow pages built in in your dialer.

I could be wrong but I think we are missing an .odex file that is supposed to go with the GoogleDialer.apk into /system/priv-app. I could be wrong, but I swore I read that somewhere...just wish I could find/remember where.

I already tried that and it still doesn't show up in the app drawer.

With the new dialer it would be labeled in the history as AutoZone + location info, with the stock dialer all you see is the number, so if you have called many numbers that are not in your contacts then good luck remember which number was AutoZone in your history.
Anyhow I switched back to my Nexus 5 anyway as I decided I liked it better than the Moto X, so for me this thread is now a moot point.

What I find weird is that my Phone icon didn't change to the Kit Kat style icon after the actual Kit Kat update, but once I installed the GoogleDialer.apk, it changed. Hmmmm......

That's strange. Mine didn't change at all after adding the google dialer. Permissions are correct.
Does it work by any chance?

No, it doesn't have the features like the Nexus 5, just the typical Kit Kat dialer. I'm downloading the Neux 5 system dump and going to play around.

I'm thinking it's some lib files or something missing.

Group messaging question

This is my first HTC device and the first time on Verizon, coming from the nexus line. So far, of course loving the build quality! So, so, so good! But my question is very simple and just an annoyance, maybe there's nothing to fix this. Group messaging works perfect, nothing wrong with it, its just every time I click on the conversation it says converting to MMS, I don't care that its doing that, but the message that pops up every time is starting to annoy me... Is there any fix for this? Couldn't find anything in the settings

Not the Verizon one, but stock one that comes with HTC. I'm use to hangouts cause coming from nexus and I didn't mind that at all. Reason I'm not using the Verizon messaging app is cause the rep at Verizon was messing with my phone while the number was being ported and basically setting it up for me cause he has an m8, said he was saving me a few headaches

Just go back to using Hangouts. That is what I use, no problems at all.
Don't use any of the verizon crappy apps, lol

Haha yea I hear ya. I usually try to give stock apps a chance before I change over to replacement app, such as hangouts. Wish you could customize the colors like the stock messaging app but oh well

More likely that VZW rep is responsible for your current headache!
Go back to the store and ask what he messed up!
