Hello Guys,
My name is John, I recently became the social media analyst at Samsung mobile. I wanted to start opening the lines of communication between XDA and Samsung. First I wanted to say I have noticed your work on our devices on the XDA forums. I think you guys do an outstanding job, I myself am a developer for mobile devices. So let’s get down to business, we’re going to be in Austin from March 10-15 for the SXSW(south by southwest http://sxsw.com/convention). I was wondering if any of you guys are going so that we could meet up and share a couple of ideas I have. I am looking forward to meeting some of you GREAT developers!
Thanks in advance,
John

I honestly hope you are authentic. It is about time that the people who make the phones embrace the superior developmental process.

Or at least attempt to embrace some kind of something. That'd be a start for Samsung.
Sounds like BS advertising to get people in seats at this event.
Interesting...go through his previous posts once, not exactly his first time posting on the forums...

I think he's legit, folks.
If you are indeed an analyst for Samsung, welcome to XDA. I'm sure you've already noticed by now that there is a lot of cynicism both for Samsung and your claim of being an employee. Simple reason for this is that most everyone here feels that Samsung has ignored their pleas for help, didn’t deliver promised upgrades, and left millions of Galaxy S owners with buggy software/hardware, etc.
If your goal is to reach out to Samsung users at the grassroots level, you're in the right place. However, you also have a tough job ahead of you. The disenfranchisement runs deep and it will take a lot of effort to fix.
Here are some suggestions for you to escalate internally within Samsung:
1. Support the development efforts of the XDA developers. There are many talented people working quite hard to customize, fix and generally improve Samsung firmware. Samsung should make some effort to provide these developers with source code, tools, and help.
2. Take an honest and upfront approach to product defects that find their way onto store shelves (e.g. GPS, battery, etc). I guarantee the cost of addressing the problem will be fully offset by the shift in customer loyalty. An unreliable product is perceived many times worse if the OEM denies or ignores the issues.
3. Set a release schedule with carrier partners and stick to it. Apple has set the benchmark for frequent over the wire software updates. Android applications are updated with fixes and improvements on a regular basis. In stark contrast, our firmware lags far behind Google’s releases and FOTA is failing more than it’s working. This has to change. Samsung needs to push out regular firmware updates that are applied seamlessly without loss of data. Forget FOTA and do it like Apple does OTW (over the wire).
4. Allow users the option of switching to AOSP. Some people like TouchWiz and some don’t. Give them the choice.
BTW, in addition to being an informed consumer, I work in the mobile industry. I know a fair amount about how it should work. The Samsung Galaxy product suite is performing very well but the real question is how long will it last. Loyalty takes effort to maintain and is easy to lose.
P.S. I may very well be at SXSW but I won’t know for sure until a week or so beforehand.
I understand I have a lot of work ahead of me. As I said before, Im here to establish a partnership with XDA developers. Inbox me to let me know if your going to be there so i can arrange somewhere to meet.
If he was legit, one of the Admins would be announcing that SamsungJohn is a rep from Samsung; he wouldn't be doing it himself as a post in the forum.

You would think that someone who is in the position he claims to be in, would come in a little more professional than just a random post.
He said he has been lurking the forums and likes what he sees. So he has also seen all the dissapointment that is running through these forums as well.
If you were in his position would you not want to come in here, with support and proof of who you are? (there is multiple threads of the same post in other categories, all have been asking for proof for hours)
I'm not saying hes not who he says he is, just think he could have introduced himself a little better.
Guys, do a little research. Pretty easy to figure out that he is either very thorough or he's actually legit.
Maybe we should tell him that it is a welcome first step to see him here.
He is an analyst so he's going to have to escalate pretty far up the food chain to be effective. Hope you're a good communicator John.

Yea, and everyone around here on XDA were total D-bags and flammed the poor guy.
He's a marketing rep for Samsung, and I think was honestly trying to find a way to reach out to the XDA community. And in return, everyone ripped his thread to pieces.
I guess the old, "you catch more flies with honey than vinegar" doesn't work so well around here. Pitty too. Cause unless all the idiots around here plan on rushing the Samsung corporate headquarters and holding the CEO ransom, burning the one bridge set forth isn't going to get anyone anywhere.

With all due respect. Samsung has brought the hatred and anger on themselves. They choose to enter into agreements where they cant comment on the updates they provide. They choose to enter into agreements where they cant update their own hardware without the carriers blessing. They choose to allow their PR reps make comments about updates that never come dangling a carrot in front of those hopeful for the advanced features others on identical hardware in other countries enjoy.
Sorry they burned their bridges, they doused their customers with gasoline, you cant blame us for wanting to embrace them with our last fiery breaths.
Ok guys if this turns into a flame fest or name calling i will close this one as well. I am not sure what will happen if anything other then empty promises as like stated above "they already have our money." To be honest This will be my last Samsung device I ever own. No matter What Samsung has to say, I will never again promote a Samsung device, as I had big hopes for the Captivate. I should have known better after all the work I have had to do on their other smartphones, that this one would be just as much a POS as all the others, BJ, BJ II, Epic, Jack.

Continue the outrage and anger (justifiable as it may be) or turn the other cheek and see if something constructive can't be done?

Just gonna say. People can protest all they want but Congress is pretty much hell bent on getting it passed. The only solution I see is that when it is passed and most sites are blocked, people will be in outrage because they have all been in the dark about SOPA. Riots will ensue untill the Supreme Court rules it unconstitutional on the basis that it restricts peoples freedoms on the internet.
Whatever the case is, it will be gone in the future.

Quite frankly, this bill should never be passed. I can understand wanting to protect artist's rights, but this is pushing it far beyond constitutional boundaries. Even if it is repealed though, I'm sure they won't hesitate to try again with a lighter variant, which would've otherwise been repealed..
You guys all know this will have far reaching consequences other than a few torrent sites going down right?
If this passes Youtube will cease to exist as you know it. It will be much too much work for them to filter new uploaded videos to make sure there is not any music clips, company logos, or other references that someone can close them down for. After awhile it will be too costly and too much work to maintain and police so Youtube may just go away forever.
Any site can be shut down for anything that someone thinks might have something on it related to a copyright of any kind. Someone could be sued for drawing a picture of the USS Enterprise and putting it on their site even. That is considered a copyright and illegal if the bill is passed.
You are guilty until proven innocent. Do you have the money for the lawyers to prove your innocence? Or is it easier to just shut your site down and not take the chance? If someone just doesn't like you they can claim you have copyrighted material and you will be shut down. If they find nothing then you can go back up but will it be worth the constant hassle?
On a forum such as this if someone has a picture as their avatar, or in their sig that someone somewhere has some rights to, the site can be shut down. It will make things a big chore to keep up with.
Make no mistake, this draconian bill will destroy the internet as you know it, and will effect much more than pirate sites.
In the US of A today what big corporations want, big corporations get. They own most of the law makers in Washington of both parties. Ever since the Citizens United ruling by the 5 right-wing corporatist justices that say "corporations are people and money is speech" politicians are beholden to corporate interests. If you as a politician go against the corporate powers that be , they will flood your opponent with advertizing cash to defeat you in the next election. This has already happened since the ruling. All this does is make any politician that wants to keep his job genuflect at the knees of corporate America. In this case the music and movie industry among others are driving this bill.
This is a BIG deal folks, even if you never will partcipate in any piracy of any kind.

It seems so if you look around, I found this statement:
"Is the SOPA bill dead? In the wake of criticisms released by the Obama administration Saturday, many observers predict the Stop Online Privacy Act and its sister act, the Protect IP Act (or PIPA), are dead on arrival."
But that doesn't meant we can relax. Corporate America is ruthless when it comes to getting what they want (which is why we give billions of dollars in corporate welfare to super rich Exxon just so they can rip us off). We need to keep up the pressure.

In an exciting turn of events, it turns out that Lamar Smith, the man behind SOPA, has actually used copyrighted material for his personal website without credit. And not just once, either.
Ok, so Megaupload has been seized by the Feds, and now other file sharing sites are withdrawing access, how is this going to affect Custom Rom Development?
SOPA is dead and nothing to do with Megaupload being shuttered. Fewer file sharing sites might mean developers having to look for alternative hosts for their ROMs, but it won't affect development.

SOPA was only an initiative by the US Senate. Other countries around the world have their own versions of anti-piracy laws that could in the future make development illegal. Also, SOPA is not dead it is only being delayed, it will rear its ugly head around sooner or later unless the members of Senate involved in this are voted out in the US 2012 election.
I have noticed that many links from Multiupload are now dead, as in there are other sites that have stopped people being able to share the files they've uploaded. I think the loss of MegaUpload will be an inconvenience, but nothing more - there are plenty of other options out there for hosting ROMs, APKs, etc.
Life itself doesn't like void - when something needed/useful disappears, new thing appears somwhere else.

Open source licenses like the GPL allow freedom to share and modify software, they're not about protecting copyright and will not be affected by SOPA-like anti-piracy laws.

That's doubtful now. The debate has boiled down to Silicon Valley versus Hollywood, and ultimately Silicon Valley weilds more power and is more attractive to politicians, especially to Republicans thanks to the perceived liberal Hollywood bias.

VOTE any politician that supports this SOPA/PIPA iniyiatives out in 2012.I'm so sick and tired of all this big government, big brother crap. They are coming after everything now from sports nutrition supplements to light bulbs to the internet. This madness got to stop!
Vote Everybody out and give a bunch of new people the chance to mess things up. Congress needs some house cleaning anyways.
Well if we could do away with congress altogether it would be fantabulous,But in all seriousness if the people don't rise up and make their voice heard this abuse of power will continue.
Think about it the government is regulating almost every aspect of our lives, and more and more regulations are issued almost every day.It wont be long before they will control how and when we use the internet.

Well it's hard to say for sure, but basically the more liberal/left leaning the politician, the more likely he/she is to push for bigger, more intrusive government and more regulations.(Exmp. the so-called fairness doctrine)
Usually libertarians and small government conservatives are for less government intrusion and more individual liberty. You just have to listen to what they say and also examin their record on similar issues.
Here is a neat little site that shows who is for/against SOPA/PIPA type laws.
