[Q] HTC Desire S stuck on yellow exclamation mark when updating to Android 2.5 - HTC Desire S

Hi all,
I've been trying to update my HTC Desire S for a few days.
I want to update from Android 2.3.3 to 2.5 but I can't get it to work.
I will try to provide you with as much info as possible.
I have a rooted phone and I've also made backups of my ROM and apps using clockworkmod and titanium backup.
Now, if I try to update from within Android (I get a message sayin an OTA update is waiting for me) then it will reboot, but get stucked at the infamous white triangle with yellow exclamation mark.
Next thing I tried is booting in recovery mode and select apply update from zip file.
This gives me a whole list of errors, and I thought the update file was corrupt.
Note that every time the phone gets stucked I remove the battery, otherwhise I can't boot the phone again.
Now, I deleted the update from my sdcard and downloaded it again. Tried the same steps but nothing happened.
Last time I tried to get into recovery mode it got stuck at the pink T-Mobile logo. I'm looking at this screen for half an hour now.
To make a long story short:
- Update from 2.3.3 to 2.5
- Carriƫr: T-Mobile (NL)
- Phone: HTC Desire S
- ROOT: YES!
- HBOOT: 6.98.1002
- RADIO: 3805.06.02.03_M
I hope anyone is able to help me with this, right now I don't know what my phone is doing, and I cannot use it.
Best regards,
Marcoevich

Ok, I've removed the battery and managed to boot it again.
Now, I renamed the update file to update.zip and put it in the rood of my sdcard.
I got into recovery mode again, tried update from zip file on sdcard. Here's the error I got:
assert failed: check_cid(getprop("ro.cid"). "0000000" , "1111111" , "2222222" , "3333333" , "4444444" , "5555555" , "6666666" , "7777777" , "8888888" , "9999999" , "T-MOB003") == "t"
E:Error in /sdcard/update.zip
(Status 7)
Installation aborted.

If you can get into recovery again I would recommend trying to restore your back up. You should not try to apply an OTA update to a rooted phone at all, you could have got a 2.5 update from a thread here. Sorry I can't help more but as far as I know you really need to get into recovery and get the back up restored or try and flash a new ROM.

Yeah, try a custom rom out there. Saga3D v4 is based on official desire s sense 3 update. Official ota can't work because hboot needs to ne updated (new partition table), and revolutionary hboot (6.98.0002) can't be overwritten by ota. Plus official ota needs stock recovery. Clockworkmod, 4ext recovery won't work. So either restore your backup or try a custom rom
Sent from my Desire S with Virtuous Quattro

Ok thx. Didn't knew i couldn't apply an OTA over a rooted ROM. I thought I would only lose my root after update.
But I've done some research in the meantime. I think I'm gonna flash the latest coredroid ROM, that one looks very promising

Thx again for your help, but I got one more question.
First i'd like to test the original htc OTA. So a workaround for that is restore my backup from before I rooted the phone.
The only thing is, will I be able to go back to the rooted ROM afterwards? OR do I need to root it again?

Well that is a little more complicated. The problem applying ota isn't the rooted rom, it is the custom recovery. Ota needs stock recovery to work.
And if you restore stock recovery and apply ota, your only possibility to root will be using htcdev unlock and permanently losing your warranty. (Htc will register your serial number and will be able to say that you voided your warranty)
Better using a custom rom.
Sent from my Desire S with Virtuous Quattro

Lol, I didn't saw that one comming
If I go to the htcdev site, I get the idea that HTC supports software development, and that it will repair phones even if they are rooted. So what's the point here? Why can't I 'normally' root my phone after upgrade to android 2.5?

Ok, to make things more clear for myself and others, I've done a conversation with an employee of the Dutch customer care department. I've translated the conversation to English, so you can understand it.
Here you go:
You are now connected with Susan.
Susan: Dear Marcoevich, thank you for your contacting HTC customer support.
Susan: What is your question exactly?
Marcoevich: Hey susan
Marcoevich: I will explain
Marcoevich: I have a rooted Desire S with Android 2.3.3
Marcoevich: Now I get an OTA update to Android 2.5 and Sense 3.0
Marcoevich: that update should be easy to apply when I restore a backup from Before my root
Marcoevich: But if I then go back to a custom ROM it is another story
Marcoevich: according to my friends at xda-developers I should do that with the htcdev unlock tool.
Marcoevich: but then I will lose all my warranty
Marcoevich: is that right?
Susan: Yes, if the unit is rooted u will void the warranty on your device. I understand that you have done this already?
Marcoevich: It is. but I think I read somewhere that HTC supports software development, and will fix rooted phones since August last year
Susan: HTC repairs the phones as usual, but the costs will be payed by the customer.
Marcoevich: Ah I see.
Marcoevich: What's the difference between a normal root or unlock the recovery using the htcdev tool? Because according to xda-developers I am losing my full warranty
Susan: It is exactly the same. No mather how you root the phone, you always lose the warranty.
Marcoevich: Hmm ok sin..
Marcoevich: I have one more question
Marcoevich: it is possible to restore your phone using a backup from before you rooted it.
Marcoevich: Can anyone, after I do this, see afterwards that it was a rooted phone?
Susan: I can give no answer. If a technician can see that the device has been rooted, it will be outside warranty. It is up to the repairers from Dynafix to determine this eventually.
Marcoevich: ok fine Thanks for your time!
Susan: Can I help you with anything else today?
Marcoevich: No, I understand now, I think
Marcoevich: thanks for your help!
To make a long story short: No matter how you root it, you will always lose your full warranty.
That's good to know
Edit: One more question remains: If I restore my phone with a backup from BEFORE I rooted it, will someone be able to see that it was a rooted phone?
Thanks in advance!
Marcoevich

As I understand it, no.
If you root it using htcdev they will have a record that you accepted their terms and conditions and rooted the phone thus voiding your warranty. If you have rooted using another method (Revolutionary for example) they have NO record that the phone was ever rooted.
You SHOULD be able to either restore your back-up (I'm not sure if this will bring it right back to stock, how did you make the back-up if it wasn't rooted?) or alternatively flash the stock rom you originally had from this site. There are threads on doing this right, and it will return your phone to stock, no one will be able to tell it was once rooted and you can then also download and apply the OTA update. I'm not quite sure why you might want to do that though as there are roms available here based on the ota update already, and much more exciting roms available as well. You should try some of these first before losing root with the ota update.
Also in future or for others reading this with similar situations: as Floatshow said I think the problem is partly caused by the revolutionary hboot being changed to 6.98.000, which the phone sees as higher than the ota roms hboot - to avoid this kind of problem it might be best to flash a new hboot - there are threads on this in the development section.
Good luck!

Thank you 4myphone! You explained it very clear
I made a backup using ROM Manager of my stock ROM. I hope the hboot etc is included in such a backup?
Thx for your explanation, I understand it now and if I ever have to send my phone to HTC I will use this site to return my phone to stock. I'm glad that it's possible
Best regards,
Marcoevich

Good question! I don't know if the hboot is part of the backup, it certainly doesn't change when you switch roms. I'd guess that restoring a back up would not change the hboot but I hope someone will correct me if I'm wrong. Let me know if you test it

Nope. The hboot would NEVER be included in the recovery backup.

[ROM] DHD Vodafone Australia Stock Branded Rom 1.32.178.5

I finally got around to rooting and S-OFFing my phone today, while I was at it I used clockwork recovery to make a backup of the Stock VHA Branded ROM.
I saw a few people were looking for this so here it is. Feel free to mirror it or whatever, this is my first ROM-dump so if anything is amiss or I did something wrong please let me know. I still have the device available to make further dumps.
This is for the Desire HD (Obviously) Branded by Vodafone Australia.
hxxp://depositfiles.com/files/3x1c6v6hj
Sorry for posting a link as a new member, I thought this would be worth it.
EDIT: Obviously the dump is all at factory defaults, on first boot it should be like buying a new phone, from a bloatware company.
Except it will be a rooted bloatware rom?
That's the point People have been asking for it as a backup rom, as flashing a non Vodafone rom may void certain warranties, which flashing this back could increase your chance of keeping. I personally upgraded my own DHD to a much better ROM as soon as I could.
Awesome, ive been waiting for the stock ROM. Good Work

No worries man. Let me know how it turns out if you use it. Everything should be at factory defaults as I wiped the device with Clockwork before making the backup. If you find anything wrong just let me know in this thread.
Thanks Should be handy for warranty issues!
Thanks champion!
Thanks mate. I've downloaded and it all looks good so far (haven't flashed though to check).
Is it rooted with VISIONary r12?
Sweet, been waiting for this. Thanks mate!
Sent from my Desire HD
Yeah the process I followed was Perma root with VISIONary v12, install hboot, install clockwork test, use clockwork to wipe to factory and then backup to SDcard. I'm unsure as to the exact details of how VISIONary works at this time so it may not still be rooted, I don't know if root persists after factory reset.
Thanks! this is getting downloaded for safety/warranty reasons.
Thanks a lot for extracting and hosting the original (Vodafone AUS) ROM!
Am i right, that this is the only thing you need to set your mobile into delivery condition? If there are some other traces of flashing they might decline warranty, too!
Perhaps, if you have the time and pleasure, you could write a detailed how-to for newbies (with links to software you need, e.g.!) how to extract the original firmware.
I think this would be necessary if the DHD will be available in other countries on other network providers (with their own ROM).
Excellent! I'm just 2 days into my new DHD from Vodafone Oz and just about to do the same... Rooting!
I'll probably make a back for myself but I'm downloading this one too... Just to be safe.
Thanks heaps Kazuroka!
BTW - Don't listen to those lame ppl who don't have anything positive to add.
Just a note: I believe that this ROM, although the stock Vodafone image, is a rooted one. So if Vodafone have a moderately smart technical department they will still be able to tell that it is not running their complete stock image.
@ivolol: That's exactly what i'm thinking about! For e. g., changing ROM on my Windows Mobile phone requires a modification of the bootloader. If you flash back your old (original) ROM you have to remember to change the bootloader to original too. Otherweise you have the original ROM on your phone but another bootloader and this could be be detected very easily. I know that the procedure changing ROM on DHD is another than on Windows Mobile, but perhaps you have to think about more things than only flashing the original ROM?!

After flashing back the backup ROM I did not have root. I installed Terminal Emulator and tried to su, and even downloaded VISIONary+ and re-Rooted the device. However I did still have the Eng hboot, as that was not included in this backup. I have a copy of the original hboot from when S-OFFed the phone, I will see what I can do about getting the original hboot and stock ROM into one package for everyone, and then perhaps write a tutorial for flashing them back individually. I MAY NOT, however, write the tutorial as I am still rather new and would not like to lead people into doing something the wrong way. I will also include the stock hboot in a seperate archive for those who have already downloaded this release.
Original HBOOT: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=X1QFR2D2
could be better i gues...thanks OP

This is the original system.img that comes on a brand new Vodafone Desire HD.
This image was dumped manually without Visionary messing with stuff, and Obviously the image is NOT rooted. It's completely stock.
This would probably be the best image to use if you're worried about returning the phone
Note: I have had to return a Desire HD to Vodafone who did not check that it was rooted and S-OFF'ed - So, don't worry too much.

Why is your file so much bigger than Kazuroka's original upload and also just wondering your method of extracting the img?
Thanks

[Q] OTA update to Android 2.3.4 problem

Hi,
I installed Installing S-off, ClockWork accroding this tread as preparation to ROOT my device. Actually i did not ROOT it.
Today i downloaded new OTA Android 2.3.4, backup and prepare to install. After reset installation process started but never finished. progress bar disappeared and only little green android body and warning sign in triangle stayed for for long time and nothing to happens.
I am not know about install something else to my device except Revolutionary.io mentioned in tread.
I can ONLY finish this state only by get off battery. :-( so i cant instal new Android 2.3.4 to my device.
Any hints how to install? or how to continue.
thanx so much,
Ondrej
Hi
I had exactly the same problem as you.
The simplest solution is to go back S-ON
Put on the update and then go back to S-Off
Simples
(BTW: If I am wrong then please let me know just don't be too angry )

hmm, truly believe that other solution is possible redo to S-ON is like way to Mordor, insurmountable...
but thanx so much for hint! i try to place our problem to tread in my question

I'm not sure if You can go back to S-ON if the mobile stops at boot and ther's no recovery installed yet.
@roul174: as far as I read Your post: You did a nandroid backup ? Or what kind of backup ? Can You start into recovery by pressing volume-down when switching on ? If so, can You restore Your backup ?

If you use this thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1192300 - it details going back to S-ON (I used it and it really is n00b proof)
And then it's dead easy to go back

Hi thomas,
I did NaNdroid backup by revolutionary HBoot.
Fortunately, after get back battery and turn on, device started normally with no damage!
Yap i can start into HBOOT by volume down and sw. on. ;-)
and lastly i do not need to restore anything, thank the Lord!!
O.
It's good to have a backup already
And now Your mobile still shows 2.3.3 and if You try to update You get the message that there's no update available ? (would be the same as I'd got after going back to stock rom even if this version was much older)
update is @ my SDcard, version is sill 2.3.3

my opinion is to better ask Revolutionary producers to help with this... it should doesn't matter if there is Revolutionary or stock HBoot in device. this could happens any time new OTA will be dispatched, so solution to redo to SON and smth, and smth and roll back to stock ROM and ... no... there should some more elegant solution.
O.
Try to ask them, but maybe the only thing for You to do is to be patient...
After setting my mobile back to stock rom (VF RUU including HBOOT and Radio), and even after switching back to S-ON, I coudn't catch the update to 1.35.xxx in the next our.
But I choosed not to wait any longer. The only reason for me to do this was to try, if going back to stock rom (for repair or replacement) was possible. My problem to catch the update again was the old radio, which was installed by 1.27.xxx stock rom. So I updated the radio manually and installed InsertCoin again...
As long as the bootloader is working, you can always install ClockworkMod recovery through PG58IMG.zip method and install any custom ROM you like. You don't require a working system - or any system at all - for that. You can also install a stock ROM using the 'fastboot oem rebootRUU' method from the bootloader. There's never really any reason to go back to S-ON except for warranty.

Yesterday the same happened to me - HTC Sensation branded by T-Mobile Czech. I did S-Off, installed ClockWork, rooted phone and debranded. OTA update to 2.3.4 ended as you describe.
What helped me was installation of stock ROM 1.35.401.1 and then do OTA update. This time instalation was OK and bootloader says '*** LOCKED ***' and S-OFF. I did not try to install clockwork again.

okay, my problem is, that I am afraid about loose data. did you backed up you phone? if yes how. and next think is how did you choose right version of stock ROM for you device?
Thanx for advice,
O.
Once you install ClockworkMod recovery, the OTA updates won't work. You need to go back to stock recovery and OTA updates should work fine.

[Q] HTC Thunderbolt Stock Original ROM

Hello I've been experimenting with some custom roms on a HTC Thunderbolt. The friend that owns it said he had a backup stock original rom that came with the phone, but all of sudden does not have it anymore. I am wondering if there is a way I can get the original stock Froyo 2.2 ROM that came with the Thunderbolt. Or even better the stock OTA Gingerbread 2.3 update that came in last week. I've found some stock roms online, but they all turned out to be invalid. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
Here is one stock rom that I found:
PG05IMG_Mecha_VERIZON_WWE_1.70.605.0_Radio_1.39.00.0627r_NV_8k_1.41_9K_1.64_release_200422_signed.zip
but all the downloads of this file turn out be to invalid.
do you want to unroot? or do you want a rooted stock rom?
if you want to stay rooted, flash one of these in recovery:
froyo 1.70.605.0
gingerbread 2.11.605.3
RUUs if you want to unroot:
froyo 1.70.605.0 (note this is a .exe file)
gingerbread 2.11.605.3 this is a pg05img(install in hboot)
i checked the last 2 downloads and they are working fine.
need help
Hey guys, I was trying to unroot my thunderbolt but jacked things up. I had it wipe all date, now will not boot Its still rooted. When i go into the reboot mood its by Revolutionary. Info it displays where it gives me options of fastboot, recover, factory reset, simlock, hboot usb and image crc is
Revolutionary
MECHA XD SHIP S-OFF
HBOOT-6.O4.1002
MICROP-/
RADIO-1.49.00.0406v_1
eMMC-BOOT
Idk if that helps. It doesnt reboot or does a looping process. Just stays at the white htc screen and doesnt say anything, and is not the screen where it says htc quietly brilliant. When i go into recovery 4ext recovery touch is whats available, current rom:unknown. Im fairly new so i would greatly appreciate any help, I like this phone alot and would hate to use something else. I dont care if after everything is said and done its still rooted or not. I have my personal info still on my card and a backup on my computer so im safe on that and dont care if i lose everything on the phone.
Hey,
I wish I would have know you wanted an unrooted thunderbolt, I would have traded you. Currently looking for a way to root ICS with out a million step process.

T-Mobile Branded Desire S Rooting

Hi all
I just wanted to make this post to make sure I know the exact process before I go ahead with this. Let me give you a little background....
I got a T-Mobile branded Desire S about 8 months ago and left it completely stock, after a while had an OTA update and from then on had constant problems with not receiving txts etc. So I S-offed and rooted with the RevX website and manually updated the radio to the latest version I could find. This fixed all my problems and everything was fine for months but then one day the phone just froze and without reading up too much I just started pressing buttons to reset/pulled the battery etc and ended up killing the phone completely.
Fast forward to now and I've just got a replacement phone but it has the older software on again so I'm not receiving txt messages again. I guess I need to update the radio image again to sort it but was hoping someone could let me know the exact process.
I assume I should use the RevX website again to S-Off/root then install CWM and the updates but which order and which versions should I be installing? I want to get it right up to date with 3.3.5 and sense 3.0 but not one of the custom ROMs.
Really appreciate anyone who takes the time to answer so thanks in advance.
First of all, please post stuff like this in Q&A. Secondly alpharevx is outdated now. Use revolutionary to S-OFF.
But now I'm confused. Do you want to update the radio and then S-ON again and get the latest update, or install a stock rom?
Sent from my Desire S using xda premium
Well ideally I'd like to not need to do anything! but at the moment I don't receive txt messages so I need to get it working. I don't want to use custom roms anyway so just need to upgrade to the latest official version.
If I understand correctly from what I've read I should use revolutionary to s-off then a program to root the phone. Then I could install 4ext and then install one of the 3.3.5 versions that works on a s-off/rooted phone and then finally update the radio to the version that works with 3.3.5?
Been reading up a little more and I will be using revolutionary to s-off the phone but should I install the recovery that comes with that? I assume this is CWM? Can I then overwrite it with 4ext if I want to?

Telstra 1.89 OTA cant be rooted yet?

Hi guys
I have read thousands of posts for hours and I take it I cant root my Telstra One XL with 1.89 on it?
Unfortunately I've had it only 1 day, tried rooting it as 1.85 and kept getting an error that said software update. I should have kept reading but I found the software update, and did it....which took me to 1.89.
Just have to wait until some switched on dev can come up with a root process? I have managed to unlock my bootloader - not that it does much for me while i have no root access!
Can I roll back to 1.85?
Very new to this game, so be gentle with the replies pls!
Are you going to install custom ROm
I just went through this process.
I suppose the first question is do you want to install custom rom?
If you do you can unlock bootloader, install custom recovery and then flash a rooted rom from there.
If you dont want to install custom ROM i dont think you can at the present time as the previous methods dont work on 1.89.
Hope this helped...
Edit: you cant roll back to previous from 1.89 because the hboot (i think its the Hboot, i could be wrong) changed on upgrade
I was looking to try the Nocturnal Xi40 ROM. So would this work? I dont want to wipe my current stock ROM to have it fail.
Grabbed the ROM Manager app and it wont work without the phone being rooted - is there a way to backup my current ROM without root?

Yeah the Xi40 is what im using cuurently so it should be fine.
Just google how to unlock the bootloader through HTCdev. http://htcdev.com/bootloader read the disclaimers as it changes your warranty.
after that google "fastbooting TWRP" (TWRP is Team Win Recovery Program) can be found here somewhere.
once that is done boot into recovery and backup (Nandroid). this will give you an image of your phone in current state so if anything goes wrong you can restore back to it.
you also can download the 1.89 RUU found in this forum (Telstra One Xl Thread), which will bring your phone back to out of box if all goes haywire.
Thanks man - worked a treat...the 2nd time lol First time it froze during the setup part of Xi40.
Already had the device unlocked and my problem was I had the wrong TWRP img. The ATT one worked where as the International one didnt in first attempts.
Happy camper, thanks again!
