[Q] Unroot Revolutionary HBOOT 6.98.1002 - HTC Desire S

Hi there,
I've been at this all day. I rooted my Desire S a few months ago without issue. I can't seem to return my phone to stock. The reason I want to is I have an OTA update from Orange (France) for my Desire S. It'll bring it up to And 2.3.5 and Sense 3.0. I know I could probably find ROMs around, but I always like to take advantage of free operator updates, when I can. The update just will not install.
I've flashed the phone with hboot.img, 4EXT's image for the Desire S, ClockWorkMod, everything. Nothing has worked. I have tried lots of the guides and tutorials here, but nothing seems to return the phone to S-ON or remove the HBOOT 6.98... that it has.
Can anyone point me in the right direction here?
Thanks a million guys,
T

Flash an hboot 0.98.2000, then run an older/latest RUU, then apply update if you aren't on the latest.
It will be 10 times faster to just flash a pre rooted stock ROM or any sense 3 ROM. No point in "taking advantage" your logic there is flawed.

Try this post:GUIDE: new hboot 2.00.2002 for sense3.0 adnroid 2.3.5 which is very good or the other here: Guide: New hboot 2.00.2002 (ENG S-OFF)

Questions:
1. Is it possible to Unroot this device
2. What software utilities do I need
Thanks in advance
Best regards...
Sorry, I don't believe anyone has been able to crack the OTA gingerbread update, so for now I don't think there is any possible way to get this done. I'm sure someone will figure it out soon though, so give it some time.
now that root is possible for 2.3.3. does anyone know how to unroot and turn s-on? i just rooted yesterday but decided to return the 4g and get the photon, but i need to unroot and turn s-on just in case.
fyi- my 30th day is this upcoming monday 8-22-11.

I don't really think Sprint cares about s-off if you're getting the phone serviced, but returning it may be different. I know Sprint services rooted phones (it's a part of their policy), but they may not be too thrilled about getting the phone back s-off. Especially since Revolutionary installs that glaringly obvious 6.16 hboot. I haven't actually ran revolutionary, but my theory on getting s-on would be to do this:
Downgrade your radio to an older version. Radios are available here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715485. This is necessary to run the s-on tool.
Download the s-on tool from the unrevoked site and flash it in recovery. If it errors because of the radio version, try an older radio.
Download the 3.70 RUU. You may be able to use the 4.24 one, but you want it to replace the bootloader and I don't know if the 6.16 hboot is viewed as the 2.16 hboot or whatever, and you don't want the RUU to skip the bootloader change.
You can run an RUU from your computer as an exe or you can download a PC36IMG of the RUU. If you're s-on it won't allow the downgrade, so you may have to do it from the computer. I guess you could run the PC36IMG RUU, reflash recovery, downgrade the radio if necessary (I don't know if RUUs flash radios, if they do then the 3.70 RUU should give you a compatible radio) flash the s-on zip, then RUU again.
I don't even know if this will work, to be honest. It should, but I don't know what the 6.16 bootloader does differently than official ones. I've heard of RUUs skipping the hboot flash for those with 6.16, which is why I suggested running the 3.70 RUU.
Now that I think about it, I think you have to run the RUU first, then reflash recovery and follow my steps. Once you're s-on you won't be able to RUU an older version, and all RUUs are older if you have the revolutionary hboot. Hmmph. I'm rambling, but if you want to try it then I think that would be your best bet.
Let me know if it works, I'm sure others would love to know.

Hey, I have the same issue. I'm not up against a deadline but I rooted an Evo I bought secondhand with Revolutionary in an attempt to solve the random reboot issue it has. Didn't do jack (pretty sure it's a hardware problem) so I'm returning it to the guy. He won't know/care if it's S-OFF but I wanted to return it the way it came.
I'll try the steps outlined by plainjane below and let you know how it goes.
Also, your deadline would be 8/21 if you bought it 7/22...
So, I flashed the unrevoked S-ON zip with the latest radios, but I didn't get an error. It said it was installed successfully but I still have S-OFF. I then downgraded my radios to the 11-19 combo zip. unrevoked flashed without error again but I still have S-OFF. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Unable to use firmware 3.24,3.30, 3.32

Hello. I'm trying to run various ICS roms that require firmware 3.24 or more(Android Revolution HD for example and numerous others). For a while I was running Virtuous Inquisition on 3.12 firmware but wanted to try some others out so I downloaded the 3.30 firmware found on the firmware for beginners topic page.
I am using the correct firmware because I know what my CID/MID are:
cid:T-MOB010
mid: PG5810000
However, no matter what ROM i use, I tried VI, Revolution HD, Blitz, on either 3.24 or 3.30 or 3.32, I always get stuck in a bootloop. VI gets stuck on a bootloop on any firmware besides 3.12. What do I need to do to get the higher firmwares to work?
This is what my bootloader screen shows on the top when on firmware 3.12. If you guys need more information just ask and I'll post it when I can.

Hi,
Have you had a look at THIS THREAD ?
Yes I have. Using this thread I found the firmware that is supposed to work with my phone using the CID I found using the information in that thread. However, the firmwares listed for my thread that are 3.24 onward do not work for any of the ROMs I have tried. Only 3.12 and 1.17 work for me. I'm not sure why this is.
I'm quite noob but probably you need to be supercid to flash some roms. You can follow the guide (in development forum 2nd sticky thread). Good luck
Strange you have locked bootloader btw.
Follow guide for superCID to see if that helps?

Well, looks like I have a similar problem...
I'm SuperCID, and till this morning, I was running VI 3.5.1b.
Seeing on the VI thread that the latest firmware could be run with it, I upgraded to 3.32... and since then, I'm stuck in an bootloop.
I tried everything : rolling back to 3.24 and to 3.12 ; changing roms ; wiping everything I could ; but i won't help.
Most of the times, I'm stuck at the HTC Splashscreen ; VI and Tripnice (yeah, even tried that one) go to the boot animation, then reboot. So I'm at a loss here as to what to do to fix it. Any help would be very welcome and appreciated !

Hi there. There are a lot of people here who will help you but you need to work through a procedure such as this Thread and identify what you have done and where you get stuck.

Well in such case I would extract the rom.zip from the official RUU (I hope you know how to do) and flash it as PG58IMG. Then start again the whole procedure.
Go to [ROM]Shipped Pyramid ROM Collection thread and dowload the RUU_PYRAMID_ICS_HTC_Europe_3.30.401.1_Radio_11.69.3504.00U_
Sorry but I cannot post links right now.
You won't lose superCID and S-OFF so it worths trying.
I have made my phone superCID and will now try to run the higher firmwares and see if that works this time around. I'll let you guys know if anything changes thanks for the help thus far

Yup, still got access to both of them. I resolved my problem by flashing both the firmware and the latest rom from He Who Must No Be Named... For a reason I still don't grasp, it seems that the firmwares I flashed previously didn't downgrade the bootloader, or something like that. Trip's one, however, is a waaaay bigger file and seems to rewrite a huge amount of things.
Don't know yet if I could switch back to VI harmlessly, though...
Sorry- of course you can reach bootloader, you listed it in your OP! Tired...
Something strikes me, you have hboot 1.23, I know this version causes issues with s-on users that have accepted OTA updates.
Have you run s-off via revolutionary in the past? Unlocked via htc.dev (which I think gives hboot 1.23)?
Does recovery work?

After reading more around the forums I'm pretty sure I need a custom firmware. One with the HBOOT of 3.12 but the rest of the files of a 3.32 firmware. How would I go about doing this?
I wouldn't mess things more than this.
I would go back to GB first.
Download the appropriate official RUU for your device and run it on the pc until appears the picture of a phone and "show readme file). Leave this window open.
then go to "My computer"-disk C (or wathever)- Documents and settings-name of computer (or your name)- local settings - Temp.
There you will find a folder or more folders with a weird name ie: {040EEDE2-371A-4BF6-8D25-1B12121F8D9E}.
Inside one of this folder you will find a file "rom.zip". do not extract, just drag and drop somehere in your pc.
Now close the RUU windows by clicking cancel.
Now rename "rom.zip" in PG58IMG and put in the root of your SD card.
Reboot your phone by pressing vol down+power.
At this point the file PG58IMG will be detected you will be asked to update. Say yes by pressing volume up.
Be patient as it will take a lot of time, don't touch or do anything until it has finished. a lot of files will be flashed and screen may goes black a couple times.
Dont worry and wait until it will say "press power to reboot".
Now you should be back to stock GB and start all procedures to upgrade once more if you like.
Remember then to delete the PG58IMG on the SD card.
When you will set your phone again, remember to untick fastboot for future use.
Hope it helps
PS: Forgot to say that by doing this you will lose root (not S-OFF and superCID) but you can easly re-root your device by following the guides in the forum.
So I managed to flash back to 3.32 and VI 4.0 after 2 days of mercyless bootlopping.
What I did was :
1- superwipe everything, flash latest TripOS rom
2 - reboot to bootloader and flash Trip's latest firmware (this way, I knew I woul have both a matching rom and matching firmware, avoiding incompatibility issue). Trip's firmware rewrites a huge amount of things, and that seems to put an end to what was causing my bootloops.
3 - reboot and let the phone alone for 10 minutes, just to let everything settle right.
4 - reboot to recovery
5 - Superwipe again
6 - flash my rom (in my case, VI 4.0)
7 - power off, and boot to bootloader
8 - flash 3.32 firmware
9 - reboot and let the phone still for 10 minutes
So far everything runs perfectly (I just have a splash screen saying "Trip'n Nice" on it) and it saved me from going into the process of flashing a RUU, rooting the RUU, installing recovery and so on. Give it a try, it might work for you to.
Looks like He has HBOOT 1.23, so I suspect He's using HTC-Dev method to unlock the boot loader or running FOTA that maybe gives him HBOOT 1.23.
Since Revolutionary could only S-OFF up to HBOOT 1.18, so maybe He just need to wait till Revolutionary support HBOOT 1.23 (the only options, maybe next year )
BTW, what are You doing that causing You to have HBOOT 1.23?
problem is that his bootloader shows ***Locked***.
If you go through htc-dev it would have shown ***Unlocked***.
This is why I would start from the beginning flashing a GB RUU and then start again the upgrade process.
My humble opinion, of course

Official ICS and Hboot 6.98.1002

Hey guys
So the official ICS update for Desire S surprised me (didn't think HTC would bother), and having been using Ice Cold Sandwich for a while now I'm curious to try the official again. The only issue is my hboot version, as my phone was Apharev'd S-OFF. It's 6.98.1002.
I've found a guide over here but I'm just a bit uncertain about simply dd'ing a new hboot onto my phone.
What I'm asking; can any either offer some verification of the hboot file I'd use for the guide above (md5?), or are there other methods I can use to get the official ICS? Keeping S-OFF would be nice but I'm not too fussy
[Edit: I'll put it another way; how would I go about updating to official ICS if I didn't mind becoming S-ON?]

So much info im getting very confused! ruu's and s off.....

Had my HTC ONE S for a while now
When i first got it i followed all the guides to unlocking the bootload and rooting etc and ended up running viper rom, and various others along the way. You know how it is!
Anyhow i was fiddling once and some how managed to delete the sd card and it wouldnt mount.
I fixed that and im not sure if its a coincidence but i now have random call drops even with a good signal. radio randomly coming on and music apps closing...........mainly when using head phones....................
The following is what was suggested to me.................
Sneakyghost said:
Not easy. I'd say do S-OFF as the very first thing (well relatively, of course do the unlock, do the SuperCID, then...). S-OFF ensures you can just flash any RUU and no matter if locked or unlocked or on custom ROM or not.
You can also only do SuperCID and flash any RUU.
Once done, pick the 3.16 WWE RUU. Please do NOT do the OTA which is offered on that RUU if you do not have S-OFF yet as that OTA disables any chance to get S-OFF currently.
If you happen to sit in the US and are on Tmobile, check HERE for latest tmob RUU because you might want Wifi calling and such. Else, just select any you like. I recommend WWE though.
Not really hard then once you got S-OFF. The hard part is understanding S-OFF procedure. If you get that done everything else is pretty easy. There is a thread for S-OFF with a good guide.

Any ideas on what i do now as i cant find a htc one s international forum?
EDIT: regarding the above, no one seemed sure and i couldnt seem to find a definitive answer so rather than messing around changing the cid and risking a brick. Some one suggested RUU_Ville_U_ICS_40_S_HTC_Europe_2.31.401.5_Radio_1.06es.50.02.31_10.09a.50.04L_release_275655_signed.exe
as my radio is 1.06es 50.02.31 and the 2.31 works with hboot of 1.14 which mine also is....................
after all this im even more confused lol!
So currently ive relocked the bootloader using fastboot and run the above RUU and im back to stock i believe?
What would one suggest?
im on hboot 1.14.0002 and radio is 1.06es i believe.
Ideally id like to get back to viper rom
Might test for a few days if i can resist a custom rom just to check
thanks
Even I'm on hboot 1.14.. Get an S-OFF, flash a latest radio ie., 1.15. That should work.
so ifi flash s off i can run any run any ruu without risk of bricking? by changing the cid thing thanks?

Risk of bricking came from.SUPER-CID and OTA update, also downgrading h-boot.
first get supercid, then get S-off, then change cid back to original or desired one. if you have a international S4 device original cid wil do fine.
then ruu what you want, s-off simplifies flashing of ruus and roms and more things.
if you might update the device with latest jb without S-off you cant get S-off no more (as of now), you now have the option.
you can always revert back.
Right guys im still not reallty understanding all this sorry.
My phones now coming up with OTA update which i understand i shouldnt run as this then blocks all chance of getting S-Off in the future?
As i understand it my HTC one is a international one so i dont need to change the cid?
So i need to do is get S-Off and run another RUU?
Ill try and follow the guide to S-Off but even that im struggling with Can anyone tell me what RUU i should be running when i manage to get S-Off. My details are above in the first post i think>?
Thanks for your patience.
You need supercid to get soff (face palm)
Then change cid back to original HTC one. To do any otas you want.
Advice:
Before you start. look at your current software version Google the ruu from that info, save the file. When need to ever change back in the future, and then ota back to latest version.

im still scared of this super cid thing as ive read a few people have bricked their phones
Although i keep getting the annoying message that a system update is available so i must try and do something soon.
Unless i just go straight to viper

Hello
Ok .. since i see some nice gentlemen here responding to queries with patience .. I'd like to post one myself.
I obtained S-Off the very next day i got my One S .. things were running smooth on stock. Looked out for some ROMS and finally installed one. Now I want to revert to my stock ROM while maintaining S-off/root. My problem is only that i don't find this ROM stable or the kernel .. just want to revert to stock.
Will flashing 3.16 WWE RUU take me back to stock firmware and kernel?
Would really appreciate the help

[Q] Can't do S-Off...

Hi Everyone!
I'm pretty new to modding, etc but a few weeks ago I thought I'd have a play.
We have two HTC Sensations. Both were on stock ROM GB then upgraded to ICS. Both are on HBOOT 1.27.
I unlocked the bootloaders but couldn't get S-Off. The original plan was to flash CM11 onto the phones but because I couldn't get S-Off, I couldn't flash the firmware to go with CM11. So; I flashed CM10 (sultanxda) instead. That is pretty good but I want to know why I can't get S-Off when it seems that everyone else can.
I realised that I couldn't get S-Off while I had anything other than a stock ROM so yesterday I re-flashed just my phone with stock ICS.
However, I still cannot get S-Off! I've tried Juopunut but whenever I short it using a staple, it just restarts and says S-Off failed.
After trying this a few times, it (or something!) destroyed my 8gb SD card. The phone just says it needs reformatting but it won't reformat it.
I've put a 2gb card in which works but now I'm scared. Lol.
What am I doing wrong?
