I have noticed that when I turn on Wifi, I am unable to access the AT&T Visual Voicemail. I still have cell service, but the app won't connect. Is this normal? I am running stock non-rooted.
It's normal, that app requires mobile data to check for voicemail. I use Google Voice and it can check over wifi
Also give ATT Messages a try.
Thanks. What about text messages? I sometimes don't get them for over an hour after they've been sent. Is it the wifi or could it be Juice Defender (free version)?

No visual VM on wifi either. I wish JD had a way to force the radio on without killing the app to check the VM.

Why is it i cannot retrieve mms with wifi? I have to connect back to 4g before i can download a picture.

This isn't really an issue as much as it is just how the data network works. MMS messages are sent over ATT's network, so if you have data turned off, the data being sent/received basically runs into a wall because your phone doesn't technically exist on the data network. When you're on wifi, you're using your local area network (or wherever you're accessing it) for internet access. When you have 4G turned on, you're using ATT's data network to transfer data. Make sense?
Yes wifi is for broawing the internet and using apps that stream. You can recieve mms while on wifi. Also while on the phone. Unless you have your data turned off. It does not use the wifi to send recieve messages or calls. But the wifi does not prevent them from cominf throuh
Yea.. well the thing is i can get the message.. but when i click to download it i must be on 4g
sent from your moms house
And 4g still works when your on wifi. I know because im on wifi all the time and send recieve mms all the time. You had to have changed something mabye messed with apn settings. Thisis not.normal
The reason for that being the part your phone still gets is only an SMS that doesn't require data to send or receive. Essentially so regardless of having data on or off, the message is still sent through, but the actual data isn't being requested. To get the picture, or whatever it is your sending/receiving, data needs to be activated. That request is essentially automatic when data is on. (If you have auto receive on, of course.)

I think what he's saying is that he can have data and wifi on at the same time, but when he disables data (or "4G"), he can't receive MMS messages. Assuming to save battery life?

I have this issue, mostly with group messages. The message comes with a download button and message expiration date. Dowload would fail. Wifi/4G on, so hpw do you explain this? The messages would then automatically download when it wants to.

Already checked. Although, I just noticed that this is happening when I'm on my 3G MicroCell. I tested this by disconnecting the MicroCell to get onto the AT&T cell tower and the message downloaded.

That's probably your answer. When "it decides to" is probably when it manages to hop onto an ATT tower to receive everything like it's supposed to.

I receive the same "Download" option when my brother sends me an MMS from his iPhone. Once I click download, I then receive this statement:
One or more of the message components have been deleted by MMS Adaptation. Either the message was too large or the components were unsuitable for your terminal.
It's a regular photo taken from his iPhone which doesn't make sense. I also have tried it while 4G was active and while on the WiFi network at the house. Data packets are also enabled and the MMS is configured to auto-retrieve. Hopefully I'll have time to go to the AT&T store and see if they can fix the issue. It is consistent when he tries to send me a photo and it's not being sent from his phone as a group MMS. I can send him photos from the Skyrocket though and I can send myself a photo from my Skyrocket to my own number.
My friend whos on Verizon tells me the same thing, he has this download issues too. It must be an Android thibg since ive never had this issue with any of the iPhones, regardless if its on at&t tower or the MicroCell.

Using JuiceDefender Extreme I have set Visual Voicemail to always use the data connection only and have had no problems since, perhaps something else can happen for mms? I haven't had any issue with MMS not being delivered when on WiFi but JuiceDefender takes care of that for me.
Title says about it all. Doesn't matter if I send it to myself, or if someone on Sprint or any other network sends it to me, I can't receive anything. I am able to send, but can only receive in google voice (which I didn't even have installed until this came up).
I've tried stock GB, bugless beast (ICS), as well as CM9. Any thoughts?
have you tried this? http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/SMSC_Updates
Have you tried setting google voice to send SMS to the phone? This can be set either through the web version or the app.

Very strange, I had it set in the app, but when I checked on the web version it was unchecked. I just sent a test message from the wife's phone and it worked. Thanks for the suggestion!
Hey there, I've been looking for a way to fix this for a few days now and im stumped.
Im using Synergy rom, juice defender ultimate and handcent. My problem is when I receive MMS messages while connected to wifi I have to manually disable wifi then re-open handcent and download the message again. Same with the stock messaging app. It seems handcent doesnt like to use wifi. I cant find any settings in either app that seem to allow me to force MMS to downloag over 4g. Has anyone else had this issue?
P.s. it also happens while sending mms messages. If I do not manually change any settings and let JD do its thing, it takes hours for a picture messgae to send.

had this same issue on cleanrom. i ddint use handcent nor juicedefender. i just swtiched over to synergyrom r443. i don't have any issues now. hmmmmmm??? i am unable to explain this to you, it's well beyond my understanding. just thought i'd give you a courtesy call.
Had this issue when on a TW ROM, switched over to an AOSP ROM (LiquidSmooth) and no issues with that anymore. For what it's worth, AOSP ROMs rock ;]
I used to use cleanrom and had the same problem with and without juice defender. Id rather not change roms again im pretty happy with this rom and kernal.

I have a similar issue, just noticed it recently with CleanROM 6R2. It does not seem to happen with the stock ROM, as both my wife and I have S3's, hers stock. We are both using Verizon Messages for our texting, and we both have the settings so that integrated messaging is enabled to sync with the web and tablets we have
If I have WIFI enabled and I receive a group message, when I try to respond my *send* will fail. If I turn off WIFI, the MMS group message will send without issue. I've tried this with both Verizon Messages and Handcent, and both suffer the same issue. So it is something at a lower level than the application.
I'm temped to try a rooted stock of the latest ROM to see if the problem goes away.
EDIT: just noticed your PS, looks like we are in the same boat...

Yep, checked those options in both messaging apps.
Glad someone is having the same symptoms as me, hopefully we can figure this out.
I did use the stock rom with root for a few days when I first got the phone and I dont remember having any issues.
I've had my Nexus 5 for about two weeks now. I've just tried sending a Picture Message for the first time with this phone, but it keeps failing?
I'm on a Vodafone 4G contract, but I'm at home so I'm connected to my WiFi. I've tried downloading ChompSMS which is what I used to use on my previous phone, but it still failed. I've also tried 8SMS which resembles the original Android Messaging App, but no joy?
I've just tried disabling WiFi, and it managed to send the message?!
What's going on? Do I really need to disable WiFi every time I want to send MMS???

you need network data connection to send mms, not wifi. mms go through your carrier, thats why they charge for it. if you could send mms over wifi, they couldnt charge you for it.
You shouldn't need to disable WiFi to send SMS. That's really strange.

I'm sure he typo'd. Either way, you shouldn't have to disable wifi to send MMS. Yes.. you need a data connection to the carrier, but that doesn't mean you should have to disable wifi to do it... I'm waiting for my N5 to show up and have been browsing around here in the mean time... If this is true, then it's definitely a bug as it hasn't affected any other android device I've had from android 2.0 through 4.3. I frequently send MMS while on wifi and it's smart enough to route it through mobile data in the background.

I've had loads of Android devices too, and this is the first time this has happened. When your phone turns up, please try it and let me know?
i am the one that is wrong here, it should send the mms even though wifi is connected. i tried earlier, and it didnt send(turned out that person changed their number). so i tried again, a different number, and it sent.
I have been using this app ever since handcent caused my phone from sending mms. Holy crap am I surprised that this is the best messaging app I have used. It allows you to text over wifi, which is huge for me because where I work reception is not the best.
I did a search and was curious why this app was never talked about? It truly doesn't feel like you're average verizon bloatware.
Because its from Verizon

Yep, I feel the same and I also stopped using Handcent and other like it because of the mms problems. I only wish Messages+ had a cooler gui.
I thought I was alone when it came to this feeling. Aside from the UI needing some touching up, the convenience and reliability of the app is amazing. I love the synchronization across devices, responding to texts from my work iPhone, and logging into the website to respond from my browser when I'm too lazy to retrieve my phone from the other room...
Is the texting over WiFi built into the app or the stock Rom itself? I'm wondering if this would work with hangouts.
It would be great if the ui could be personalized and have themes.
Syncing across multiple devices and being able to mute group texts are definitely other great features.
Texting over wifi is built into the app.

There are limitations to the customization though. I.e., you can't remove the contact photos in the conversation list view. Aside from that, yes, it's simple to make it into a minimalist's daydream.
I hated this app, as well as hangouts and the other stock messages one. Deleted all of them and I love 8sms. I can dark theme it as well as other options. I also hate Samsung keyboard and use Kies. I'm pretty sure the WiFi SMS thing is just something auto done when you're connected to WiFi, not messages app related.

I suspect this is not true. Technically yes, any app can be programmed to just do something like send the txt as an e-mail to a carrier's SMS / MMS gateway if no cellular connection is present, but I'm pretty sure that the message would show up differently to the receiver -- as the full gateway number/e-mail. I'm more curious if the Messages+ app does this seamlessly, and that's what I assume... but I don't have a good area to test it currently where I have a good WiFi signal but no cellular signal.
I will concur with most of you. This app is ACTUALLY useful. Especially when using it with other verizon users, it functions like iMessage as in you can see when people have read it. Also if they are using the app then you can see when they are typing too.
Only issue i've ever had with it is that it will send or receive the same text multiple times occassionally. It's not specific to this phone because i've had it happen before.

ahhh...gotcha, cool deal.
Another great thing about Verizon Messages is that you can use it the send and receive messages on a computer (through a web interface or a dedicated program on PC) and on non-Verizon tablets/phones. Being able to send/receive messages via a computer or any of my wifi tablets is a huge plus.
I might have to try this now. I never really gave it much thought since i been using EvolveSms
I actually like this app and have it installed on a Tmobile device because that phone has WiFi calling and sometimes better reception than my Verizon phone at work. I can get all messages on one phone without having to carry both of them. Send /receive on the Tmobile phone from my Verizon number with this app is great.
My needs are minimal and I like it. It's a nice improvement from the stock app without being buried with features I'll never use.
