Question on an update for NSCallob rom - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I want to update my Rom from NSCallob 1.0.51 to 1.0.60 without losing my apps or at least using some kind of backup to restore my apps after the update. Any help would be great thanks.

Titanium backup for sure.
I don't know that ROM specifically, but if it is just a minor release update you may not have to wipe anything but dalvik cache. Personally, i'd do a nandroid backup, wipe dalvik cache and cache, then flash the new version. If there is trouble, restore the nandroid, use titanium backup and do a full wipe, then restore with TB.

Just wiping dalvik cache will surfice when updating NSCollab! I know because I've done it myself with this rom on quite a few occasions!

Yup just wiping the dalvik cache will it freeze at the Google bootup screen, luckily I didn't a backup prior to the update!

Restore stock rom over debloated

Not a big fan of the debloated rom so I want to go back to my backup I created before installing. Being that clockwork doesn't wipe data/cache will a restore be fine and does anyone know if restoring works through clockwork on thunderbolt?

...but Clockwork does allow you to wipe data/cache.
Either way, you should be able to just restore your nandroid backup no problem.

You should be able to format SYSTEM, DATA and CACHE in adb
format SYSTEM:
format DATA:
format CACHE:
Why would you not be a fan of the debloated rom when it's exactly the same as stock minus the bloat?
too many lil glitches and i miss having the built in visual voice mail. I will admit that the battery life is really good!

Technically you don't have to wipe because the nand restore process actually does a full wipe for you... but me personally, I always wipe at least cache and dalvik before restoring a nand, just to make sure there's nothing left over from the previous ROM.

[Q] restoring a backup

When a restoring a Nand backup through CWM, does it actually wipe data, cache, boot etc..
Or do we have to manually wipe everything.
I noticed that when restoring it said erasing boot and stuff.
Asking because i always run into trouble when restoring a backup, Would be helpfull if someone can share the proper way of restoring a backup.

By default restoring a backup through cwm recovery does not wipe everything. If you choose to restore through Rom Managaer you will be given the option to wipe data, cache etc. I would recommended doing wipes manually, just to avoid any issues that may occur from not doing it before a nand restore

Wiping data/cache is enough or should we format boot/system etc?
It'd be better to do a manual wipe before restoring (system, data, cache, dalvik).

[Q] update custom rom

Sorry for the ignorance.
I have version 6 of custom rom, if i flash the versione 8 I lose data? Or is it just as an update?
thanks
(sorry for bad english)
If the developer tells you to do a factory wipe or wipe data, then you'll lose your data. But most cases when a developer makes a new version, you can just wipe both caches and update your rom without having to wipe your data.

Just to add a little to the previous post.
You could usually get away with just wiping dalvic
As for doing a full wipe where you would lose your data: thats usually only needed if the dev went from one milestone version to another on the ASOP.
Example from a GB based ROM to a ICS based.

What they said above . In case a full wipe is required as noted by the ROM devs, I would recommend using Titanium Backup to backup your apps and apps data before wipe. You can then restore apps + data after flashing the new ROM or update. TiBu has saved me a lot of time restoring apps after a full wipe.
Thank you all for your responses!
This rom (CyberGR-MOD) run the wipe? Is there anyone who uses it?

[Q] a couple questions regarding audio level and app back up.

So I just bought this used and I know the volume is a bit low. Is there a way to make the max volume higher? also since I'm rooted but on stock rom what's the best way to back up all my apps so i don't have to redownload them if i decide to flash a newer rom? thanks in advance
This is the best Audio booster

Titanium Backup app will backup all your apps
Also a good idea to make a full Nandroid backup from recovery too, that way you always have a way to recover to how you were before flashing any ROMs
But when you flash ROMs, you don't need to 100% wipe the tablet, just wipe SYSTEM and CACHE and DALVIK CACHE before flashing the new ROM, and your apps will remain installed
User data / apps etc is in DATA partition, ROM is on SYSTEM and think of CACHE and DALVIK CACHE as temp folders, always best to wipe them before and after flashing or restoring

Beauty of EOS is easy update ( wipe dalvik and cache before update) but once in a while do a complete wipe reinstall/update so that the ROM is stable ( personally it helped me). Don't always believe in app back up, I learnt hard way abt it. So my method is update once in 4 revised EOS updates, and flash the ROM after cleaning dalvik n cache. I do not touch apps as they never gave any issues as long as I restore them from titanium back up..
