[Q] restoring a backup - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

When a restoring a Nand backup through CWM, does it actually wipe data, cache, boot etc..
Or do we have to manually wipe everything.
I noticed that when restoring it said erasing boot and stuff.
Asking because i always run into trouble when restoring a backup, Would be helpfull if someone can share the proper way of restoring a backup.

By default restoring a backup through cwm recovery does not wipe everything. If you choose to restore through Rom Managaer you will be given the option to wipe data, cache etc. I would recommended doing wipes manually, just to avoid any issues that may occur from not doing it before a nand restore

Wiping data/cache is enough or should we format boot/system etc?

It'd be better to do a manual wipe before restoring (system, data, cache, dalvik).

If you are doing nandroid restore you don't have to wipe at all, just restore.

Nandroid Backup/Restore

I've been thinking. I wonder if it's best to wipe everything (system, cache, dalvik, factory reset) before you do a nandroid restore. I thought I remember reading in a thread once that someone thought some things carry over from the rom you were on even though you restored your previous backup. Does anyone wipe before they restore a backup? I usually don't but this last time I did. I don't think I'm going the notice any difference tho but maybe that's why some people have problems. If they're on a rom that has a bunch of bugs some of them could carry over without doing a wipe before restoring a backup.
If you look at the nandroid procedure it wipes system and data. I never thought of the caches. Hmmm.

[Q] Restoring via CWM

Hi All,
Forgive me if my question is nooby! But I just wanted to ask before I do anything to my phone.
So, I have backed up a ROM via CWM. Now if I were to restore that ROM, do I have to do the "wipe data/factory reset" and Wipe Dalvik Cache or I can just Restore?
Kind Thanks!
With cwm no idea. With 4ext there is no need since it is done automatically. Give it a shot or check the script when it is being done to see what it says. Worst case scenario is pull the battery, wipe, flash.
When wiping all you need is
Wipe data/factory reset
Format all (except sd card). - (this last one is probably all that is needed really).
Once again 4ext, no idea with cwm.

I prefer to do a full wipe before restoring a nandroid, but I have restored without the wipe. Don't recall any I'll effects.

Yeah! That's what I've learnt so far! Thanks!

restoring nandroid backup - wipe first?

is there any need to do any wiping if restoring a nandroid backup? would there be any benefit?
thanks

Nah, not that I know of. I do a factory reset and system wipe just out of habit. I'm fairly certain restoring a nandroid wipes the system partition in the initial steps.

[Q] Restoring via TWRP

What is the process? Factory wipe then restore? Or wipe then format data? Can I format everything then restore? I am coming from BoneStock ROM and restoring to JellyBean v19.
You don't have to do anything. I always do a factory reset then restore my nandroid. The restore will wipe System as its first step anyway so doing anything more is optional not required.
