[Q] Port near battery - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey XDA,
I just got a Nexus S and when I went to put the battery in noticed what looks like an antenna port to the right of the battery, just curious if anyone knows what it's for as I didn't see anything mentioned about it in the manual (doesn't show up on their diagram of it).

I saw this the other day too, some info on the subject would be nice.

external antenna port. Lots of phones used to have them.

Thanks,
Do you know the connector port name/type is? I get 1 bar at best of coverage in my home and generally only use my phone in one spot and wouldn't mind an external antenna of some sort.
Edit:
Found the port name MMCX, now just looking for a antenna that will work.

If you see the W!,R1,,w2 holes. they are your attenas and recivers. if you poke the small hole with something you break connectivity. Which you can now get it replaced if you have insurecnce doe.... dont listen to me this is just my expeice that i had with my samsung insinct, I'm sharing education. this is fraud.
please disregard all grammatical errors its 2am and im tired but bored... this is sad.

external antenna

can anone help me locate the external antenna port for the raphael (htc fuze). I had the service manual, but i have no idea where the antenna is located. I know that it does have one eventhough its not shown. i have sevral htc devices, where i had to poked a hole thru the back cover of my touch dual in ordr to see the antenna! your help is aprreciated, because i live in area, that without hooking up to external antenna, i will not get any reception! thanks in advance.
The Antenna Port is under the Battery Cover of the Raphael, but hidden with stickers.
Sorry dont found any good pictures of the back so i dont give you the exactly position
there are a few antenna shown in the service manual. since it said that the internal antenna is located at the bottom of the phone near the usb, could the port you are referred to is also near that area? could you be a little more sure before i attempt to open up my phone to look for it? or rather i just need to poke a hole...but i need to know where to poke it. normally, ive always found the external port near the camera...should i try that? thanks much!

Have you considered a repeater antenna? I use one here at my house because I can't get reception inside. Works with all the phones in the area without having to directly connect anything.

Strange hole on the back

Hey there,
I just received my new Polaris - but one hole is not sealed by a cap. It's not the GPS antenna, but some other kind of antenna, but I don't know whether it's bad to have this hole on the back and whether there is a cap for it...
Does somebody also have this hole on the back and knows what this connector is for? Looks very similar to the GPS antenna... I already thought whether it's an antenna for radio or GSM...
Sorry, attaching a photo...
thats some serious hardware hacking...
if you got it like that return it back to the one that sold you it.
I have no hole or cap what so ever at that location. Are you sure this is a Polaris? Perhaps you got some test-model with an extra adaptor plug for something on it.
im asking the same question in another thread...
and hoping for answers there.

a guy there has dismatled the phone so im putting in a question about what is showed in your hole.
by finding out whats under there im thinking of (fm radio) maybe somone has built some extension from there.
example the personbe before you might have used the phone in a car alot and had bad FM reception and wanted to build a FM extension.
Good question
I wrote to HTC this morning. Let's see what they say...
Also I was wondering because the S/N for this phone is not known at HTC for the official download of the new WM6.1 update...
Anyways, somewhere behind the battery there is a "POLA100" printed on the phone... As it completely looks like that phone, as it has the "htc" logo on the front and as it has the "POLA100" written inside, it MUST be one..
Anyways, I was also wondering, because the plug for the power cable is some sort of UK one (without the third connector), no euro-plug..
Strange thing it is... I will let you know about the answer from HTC...
Ah, before I forget, I have a better picture of the hole... I attach it...
There is a slot for external gsm antena

USB port issues

I am having issues with my Captivate's micro-USB port being loose. This is my second Captivate, and although it's still under warranty, the first one was RMA'd with the same issue. I never drop the phone while charging, etc, and I've tried multiple chargers so I really can't see why this would be happening. Both phones were 1008 versions, not sure if the 1008 is known to have this issue, or if I just have horrid luck. If anyone here can solder / fix the phone, I'm hesitant to go to AT&T again, as last time they made me go to the store and have the person working there verify that the USB port was not broken (luckily it still charged if you held it a certain way, and even more luckily I was able to flash stock before returning it!). Anyways, this phone is a refurb, and I did call and almost get it replaced as soon as I got it, as it had this issue slightly upon arrival, but decided it would be a hassle. It's only been about a month since the RMA, so I'm pretty sure that if I try now, they're going to get very mean about it, and possibly try and send me a bill for the phone, not to mention, the guy at the AT&T store will probably think something is up.
Any ideas are welcome, I love my Captivate, and I was just getting into develping on XDA :S

I actually found a fix to my issue. I actually was looking at it one day, and figured that in theory, it should be easy to fix, so I (CAREFULLY!!!) took a small knife I had and gently bent the inner part of the port up just a tad (it looked like it was too far down, and yes, I know it's supposed to be far down, but not that far), and it actually worked perfectly.
Thats weird... It kinda has to be what you're doing with it, since mine doesn't even have an irregular slight wiggle.
Obviously it could be just your luck but i doubt it.
edit: and who cares if the att dude thinks somethings up... its your $500..
Like I said, the second one actually had the issue upon arrival, but it was barely noticeable (the USB port would work, but if you moved the phone a lot, etc, it'd disconnect, then reconnect). I called in and talked to them, but decided not to RMA because it'd be a pain (in hindsight I should have...), and the problem just got worse.
Is the port internally lose? Or just when you plug a cable in it wiggles alot? Ive heard about people stretching the casing inside the port from alot of flashing (plugging in the usb). But if the hole port moves inside the phone thats no good lol. You should try to locate a nearby device service center and show them the problem and make sure you walk out with refurb thats fine. Dont worry about the people at atnt questioning it. Hell I use to walk in and just say "gps dosent work" and they would switch it out no questions.
What you said makes sense, the port looks like it's pretty sturdy, it's just that the cable wiggles a LOT, and it makes it hard to get it to even register.
I had the same issue but a new cable solved it

I also had this issue, i opened up the stock Samsung Cable end to find that two of the four wires had insufficient strain relief and broke off at the solder joints
Oddly enough I had issues with the first cable as well, but I replaced it, and have tried others from my current.

[Q] External Antennas?

I've seen a few sites selling external antennas for the Charge. I live out in the vast wilderness of East Bumblecrapfail, NC, and only have, at best, one bar of 3g signal at my house. I am beyond the reach of cable or DSL. I need something better than this HughesNet abomination that I mockingly call a net connection. Halp! Are these things safe? Will they do anything to boost my signal? Anyone have any experience with them? HELP A NERD OUT, I JUST WANT INTERTUBES AT HOME. Thanks in advance.
If u can swallow spending about $350.,I bought a cell-phone mate ®booster with directional outside antenna and dome inside antenna which they say covers 2500 sq ft. Cellphone mate was the only one that put out a full 3 Watts. Wilson and others just 1 and a half. Its also made of cast aluminum instead of plastic. At my fish camp I went from 1 bar outside to 4-5 bars inside. You definitely need the upgraded antennas tho. Their good for about 15 DB gain.get the dual band and it'll work on everything but IDEN networks. They are starting to make 4g boosters too. YMMV

Awesome! I heard someone saying something about boosters frying the modem on the charge, though. is this the case or is that the ramblings of a paranoid/incompetent/unlucky techie?
Don't stick anything on the charge as far as R1L1 ports on the back of the phone. I messed up my Charge doing that.
I have noticed that the Thunderbolt has an external antenna on the batter cover. I'd love to somehow copy this method. My bro's thunderbolt always gets great 4G

Could you share what you did that caused issues with your Charge? I am quite interested in making use of those ports, but I am trying to gather as much info about them as possible before I cause problems.
Pretty sure those ports are for factory adjustment of the radio, and not for external antennas.

More like test points, to hook an oscilloscope to, adjustable as in, setting power settings in the firmware.

Uhh.. stuck a copper wire in like some stupid youtube video.. Don't do this.. it will mess up your connections.. you'll lose all connections.
Wilson and some other company showed off a $150 external antenna for 4G Verizon LTE phones at CES. We'll probably get a much better look at their products during Mobile World Congress in the end of February. IIRC they plan on releasing it Q2 of this year.
As has been pointed out, the antenna doesn't connect directly to the Charge, as that would permanently disable the Charge's internal antennas. Rather, you set the Charge in a cup holder-type device, which is connected by wire to a separate antenna. I think the phone holder wirelessly transmits the amplified signal from the antenna, over the wire, and to the phone.
Why does plugging stuff in even permanently disable the internal antennas? What sort of benefit is that supposed to have?

It sounds like it breaks some hardware antenna points, not some software detecting and permanently disabling.

when i was stuck with a non worth mentioning Fascinate i had problems out the yeng yang trying to make and recieve calls here at home. (SE TN.) Once i griped enough they offered me a choice between droidx2 or this charge. i chose the charge because of the humming bird processor.
after reading many spec sheets from where ever on the net i discovered that the Charge spec stated it had an antenne, no where does the Fassy specs so state that fact.
but i'd like to jump in on this band wagon about the R1 L2 ports..
if and when someone finds info on it send me a pm.. sometimes i am smart enough to check for them...
best of luck on antenne ..
BTW Verizon told me i could get that booster thingy and i told them i bought a ph that was supposed to work and had no plans to buy optional 500 to make ph wrk. charge does well with one of those stick in antenne under the battery..
might get ya by.. and cheap also...
Yeah, these ports intrigue me. I haven't seen any other phones that actually have these ports. I want to boost some signal!
There is a side on Google Plus that hooked up a home made antenna to one of the ports. I will post the link when I get to a computer later.

Usually the ports are hidden inside the phone. My old HTC Tilt Windows mobile phone has the port showing. That's where I learned about what they are for. Some dumbass stuck a paperclip in it and fried his cell radio.

What,Why,and how can I tinkier with them

Ive noticed on many hand sets that Ive acquired over the years that there are what seem to be coaxialstyle or perhaps better described as ULF modules or connection points(like the ULF connectors that connect your antenna to your wifi card on your laptop) under the back cover near the battery some even have disguising rubber plugs inserted over them to cover the connector. theey are about a millimeter squares with small female type cylinder connectors that stick up with an insulative ring around the in side leaving a small point in the center where a pin would complete the connection. If anyone knows what these connection ports are, how they are used, what they are used for please do explain. Again if youve ever popped the ULF (Antenna) connectors off of the wifi card of your laptop youll have a good idea of what I'm talking about. This topic has intrigued me for years but I never dug into it. Ive got a couple older model phones that im tinkering with the Hardware on and figured I poll the audience so we can all benefit from a little more knowledge about our handsets. Developers thank you for all your hard work, Im learning, and hope to be able to contribute soon. For now Ill just stick to explaining that a root method or custom recovery/rom for a device depends greatly on the Version, region, OS and OS version and not just the model, and probably alot more. Anyway If anyone has some insight into this hardware query Id appreciate it, In the mean time I'll keep digging. Thanks every one
