I've seen a few sites selling external antennas for the Charge. I live out in the vast wilderness of East Bumblecrapfail, NC, and only have, at best, one bar of 3g signal at my house. I am beyond the reach of cable or DSL. I need something better than this HughesNet abomination that I mockingly call a net connection. Halp! Are these things safe? Will they do anything to boost my signal? Anyone have any experience with them? HELP A NERD OUT, I JUST WANT INTERTUBES AT HOME. Thanks in advance.
If u can swallow spending about $350.,I bought a cell-phone mate ®booster with directional outside antenna and dome inside antenna which they say covers 2500 sq ft. Cellphone mate was the only one that put out a full 3 Watts. Wilson and others just 1 and a half. Its also made of cast aluminum instead of plastic. At my fish camp I went from 1 bar outside to 4-5 bars inside. You definitely need the upgraded antennas tho. Their good for about 15 DB gain.get the dual band and it'll work on everything but IDEN networks. They are starting to make 4g boosters too. YMMV

Awesome! I heard someone saying something about boosters frying the modem on the charge, though. is this the case or is that the ramblings of a paranoid/incompetent/unlucky techie?
Don't stick anything on the charge as far as R1L1 ports on the back of the phone. I messed up my Charge doing that.
I have noticed that the Thunderbolt has an external antenna on the batter cover. I'd love to somehow copy this method. My bro's thunderbolt always gets great 4G

Could you share what you did that caused issues with your Charge? I am quite interested in making use of those ports, but I am trying to gather as much info about them as possible before I cause problems.
Pretty sure those ports are for factory adjustment of the radio, and not for external antennas.

Uhh.. stuck a copper wire in like some stupid youtube video.. Don't do this.. it will mess up your connections.. you'll lose all connections.
Wilson and some other company showed off a $150 external antenna for 4G Verizon LTE phones at CES. We'll probably get a much better look at their products during Mobile World Congress in the end of February. IIRC they plan on releasing it Q2 of this year.
As has been pointed out, the antenna doesn't connect directly to the Charge, as that would permanently disable the Charge's internal antennas. Rather, you set the Charge in a cup holder-type device, which is connected by wire to a separate antenna. I think the phone holder wirelessly transmits the amplified signal from the antenna, over the wire, and to the phone.
Why does plugging stuff in even permanently disable the internal antennas? What sort of benefit is that supposed to have?

It sounds like it breaks some hardware antenna points, not some software detecting and permanently disabling.

when i was stuck with a non worth mentioning Fascinate i had problems out the yeng yang trying to make and recieve calls here at home. (SE TN.) Once i griped enough they offered me a choice between droidx2 or this charge. i chose the charge because of the humming bird processor.
after reading many spec sheets from where ever on the net i discovered that the Charge spec stated it had an antenne, no where does the Fassy specs so state that fact.
but i'd like to jump in on this band wagon about the R1 L2 ports..
if and when someone finds info on it send me a pm.. sometimes i am smart enough to check for them...
best of luck on antenne ..
BTW Verizon told me i could get that booster thingy and i told them i bought a ph that was supposed to work and had no plans to buy optional 500 to make ph wrk. charge does well with one of those stick in antenne under the battery..
might get ya by.. and cheap also...
Yeah, these ports intrigue me. I haven't seen any other phones that actually have these ports. I want to boost some signal!
There is a side on Google Plus that hooked up a home made antenna to one of the ports. I will post the link when I get to a computer later.

Usually the ports are hidden inside the phone. My old HTC Tilt Windows mobile phone has the port showing. That's where I learned about what they are for. Some dumbass stuck a paperclip in it and fried his cell radio.

So I was playing with my g2 and noticed it had a fm radio installed so I opened it and low and behold it worked after inserting a headset. This is where my question comes from. It said I had to put in the headset in order to have an antennae... I then remembered a few years back when phones had a little port for an external antenna to boost cell phone reception that worked amazingly. In some cases I could get great reception in places I previously had no bars at all. Are there any accessories that could hook into my phone headset jack and do that now?

The FM radio antenna works through the headphone jack, yes. But the phone antenna doesn't, it's inside the phone and I suspect you'd have to do some hardware modding to be able to do anything like this, sorry.
A standalone cell repeater / booster would work in a fixed location (or even in a car/boat/RV). They are not exactly pocketable though.
Anyone remember those little strips that you'd place behind the battery door, or under the battery? I suppose those never worked... Worth a try maybe?

Things like this have been around for a while. You need to install a "reciever" (basically an antenna akin to RFID tag antennas) to get the resonance right so the power transfers wirelessly. It's not just "drop-and-go", if it were, there'd be a lot more of them around. They work but I'm not 100% sure on the effeciency and performance in terms of "speed-charging" but they do work.

Actually I have one of these. The concept is cool, and I thought it was the greatest thing, not having to plug in your phone. But what they don't really stress in the ads is the fact that you need an appendage attached to your phone for this to work. And this appendage is not too small, changing the shape/size of the phone when pluged into its charging port, and also it's quite expensive to get if you want a new one. And this is not really a contact-less charger pad, mine has alternating strips where two of the three contact points on the charging appendage should touch or it won't charge the phone. I used it for a couple of weeks, then stopped using it because of how much pain in the back it was to use it.

After I first pulled the back (7 screws and pop back plate off), I started noticing a situation where the antenna was only working at about 1/2 the strength it should. I have tested this on long trip runs. I have pulled the back a number of times to try to fix it.
Thought it might be a faulty coax so pulled that but continuity both center and shield and impedance 0.1nf for what that's worth (not much on a short length). I have stretched slightly and wiped all of the spring contacts, pulled the antenna lobe and examined it closely, poked and prodded, and emphasized attaching the backplate at the bottom first.
I can "fix" it by sticking a 1/2 wave (about 7.15cm) wire (from a twist-tie) into the antenna jack and snaking it under the battery. I may have fixed it on the last run, but I have also stuck the 1/2 wave in there just to be sure it doesn't fail when I need it.
The roms i flash are all working fine so I thought I'd post this to see if it hit a chord with any tinkerers!
(running on straight talk with the tmo SIM so hitting only the tmo towers)(speeds are fine, data works great)
So... what your saying is, our phone is so powerful at doing 4G that it beats the crap out of SGS3, so that's why the antenna is only using 1/2 of its "supposedly" power? What happens when we extend the strength of the antenna? Would we get better reception, especially in dead spots :'(?
I think what he was saying is with some cleaninging and tweaking you can get the full benefit of the antenna.
For reference I use to be into cb radio and a stock radio and antenna will not perform as well as one that has been optimized to its fullest.
Electronics are made in a mass manner and even tho they have quality control at some point production will take precedence over quality. Its not always intentional. When I was a younger man I was always told to look at the manufacturer build date. If it was a friday or monday avoid it. Most factory workers live for the weekends. And Mondays are recovery days and Fridays are IDGAF days.
I knew that but why would Samsung limit the antenna? Battery? Space?
sorry for delay, I've been out trying different things with it.
What I meant to say is that suddenly the radio/modem/antenna is not working like it should - I only get 1/2 to 1/4 of the input signal I should. I have no idea of output, of course.
I thought this happened after I took off the back plate, but I was in the process of flashing about 10 different roms (flashaholicism), so I don't know the cause. I felt I remembered the word "radio" on one of them, so I just went back to Heimdall stock and back up and thought I fixed it, but took a short run and it seems to find and not recover from black holes easily.(where the tmo coverage map says it's excellent)
So at the moment I am confused. At one point I thought I ran across different radios I could use for the SGS 4G so I'm off to look for that.

They are really limiting the antenna.
I will use the cb radio as a example again. With a standard mobile antenna your range is around 5 miles radius. Now if you use a base antenna and elevate it higher in the air your range will in crease even more.
With mobile phones the antenna is very small so they have to get creative with it. So like the op said he/she created a 1/2 wave booster it will allow a larger area of reflection.
During assembly there is a limited amount of uses on things. After using a solder iron for so long you have to clean/replace the tip. Certain amounts of "corrosion" and "dirt" are allowed before the item has to be rejected. It still meets the specs but with some simple electronics cleaner and such it will improve the connections.
Does that make sense?
I did take it back to stock again and stopped there and went for a walk, but , again, it did seem to be able to find black holes fairly easily.
i do find this complaint to be common. I noticed one comment in the dev thread, but a bunch for generic gal s. Still looking.
This is Boston and coverage is fairly good.
I only got this on the 24th Aug, and I don't recall it doing anything like that until a couple of days ago, though I could have missed it.
I can't find a list of radios for the t959v. Is there one? Thanks!

LOL - just found it there! Thanks! only 3 modems for CM. humph!
The other modems were too large iirc. The black hole you speak of is annoying. I will have full service just outside the local walmart super center. Inside I lose all service. Which pisses me off. If I am talking when I go in it is a crap shoot if I lose service or not. If I am talking on the phone and lose it I have to reboot to regain service once outside.

Huge thanks for that eollie!!! I'm not alone. With that thought I will play a bit with the other 2 modems, and then work on a better antenna.
The antenna is a folded loop with a lot of variations for all the frequencies. it is about 2" long. Just a peel and stick tape wrapped around that lozenge shaped thing that fits into the back plate.
Actually this is all a big psychological experiment - we are given phones and told to expect that they will work. Occasionally things are done to test us.
So I went out on a long bus trip to test modems. Too late I discovered that the one I go into recovery and flash, is not necessarily the one that shows up as the last 3 characters in the baseband. At least once I flashed K1D and later found I had KJ6. I was thinking that K1D was good, but I will have to run the test all over again. My rom for all these tests is the BHUNDVEN R8
Meantime I will spend the next few days with my SIM firmly planted in my Prism to try to get back to reality. At the moment I am simply thinking that the t959v is simply a phone with a weak antenna both for carrier freq and for gps, certainly not usable in a bus.
If I come back to this, I will be testing on stock, but I have to flash a kern to get CWM recovery (I have been using kernel-sms-kj6-v0.2.0-bml.zip) Will I be able to flash the unpadded modems after I flash that kern? or does that change life to CM?
I would flash bhundvens blastoff kernel.

well, first time I tried the blastoff kernel but it's too big, so did kernel-sms-kj6-v0.2.0-bml.zip but that CWM v5 doesn't like blastoff.
EDIT: never mind, I think I sussed it... we'll see!!!
nope. I'll post on the q&a for that
eollie, I finally got back to a nice simple rom using your rooted one-click and an unnamed rooted spiffy 2.3.6 that bhundven gave me. Now I can start playing with that plethora of GB modems!

LOL - I wondered the same thing. I just got about 15 of them for $3. No change whatsoever.
I changed 2 things: re-joined both sides of the antenna, and changed from stock (with KJ6)(no x's) to bhundven's new kern and unnamed 2.3.6 and got some x's in the tunnel(with KH1). So now I have to separate one side of the antenna and try it again.(and again with the boosters in this configuration)
Like the title says, I replaced the digitizer, but now my phone either isn't recognizing my SIM card, or somehow the antenna isn't working. I can connect to my home wifi network, I have full audio, full capacitive buttons and vibration....but signal bar just shows empty (i'm using CM10).
I've put my SIM into my other phone, everything works fine. I've checked all of the connectors on the motherboard, everything is connected and nothing is loose or pinched anywhere. Can someone give me a layout of which connections control what?
thanks.

Yup, not too sure what's happening. I literally did NOTHING else to the phone except accidentally rip off the connection on the lower end of the phone. I still get Wifi, so I know nothing internally is broken. I need to call tmo on the off chance this phone got locked due to previous owner payment or reported lost or stolen. The LG brand could mean that the digitizer was previously replaced. It sounds like a very peculiar situation you are in. Replacement parts idea is probably best if you have looked over everything very carefully and can't visually find anything wrong. Did you use a hair dryer or other heat source to get the digitizer off? Perhaps the radio portion received to much heat and fried. That the only thing I can think of.

When I first did the repair, I ripped the ribbon from mother board to digitizer, not realizing it was there in the first place. The screen separated from the digitizer pretty easily, no heat required.
The new piece I ordered had the digitizer and outside bezel all attached as one piece, which would normally be two pieces. While constructing everything, I forgot that little rubber/plastic piece that fits near the front facing camera, so I detached the mother board connections, then went down to the antenna area and disconnected the micro coax and the connector slipped off the cable altogether. I put the exposed wire back into the connector, restarted the phone, and there has been no signal ever sense.
The last thing I'm going to try is getting an OEM micro coax from either a P990 or P999. I feel kind of stupid for worrying about this, since it's an old phone with limited development at the moment, plus I have another phone already. But since I bought an entirely new shell, I want to fix this damn thing and probably just sell it.

Canadian G2X/P999 are branded LG and are known as Optimus 2X even though they are not the P990 Optimus 2X which is/was also sold in Canada, each model sold by different service providers operating on different cell radio bands. At a point, T-Mobile was supplying LG branded G2X/P999 phones as replacements. You probably have one of those or, if you bought it from someone in Canada or who was in Canada that would also explain why yours is branded LG.
If you shorted the antenna cable's internal wire to its shield that would short-circuit the cell radio's output which may have damaged the hardware if the phone transmitted while there was a short-circuit.

I think what I need to do, if i wanted to keep this phone, is the buy a crappy g2x and use it's internal motherboard with antenna and coax cable.
Does anyone know what the board is called at the bottom of the phone, near the charging port? It's where one end of the micro coax cable connects. The other end is near the middle of the phone, on the main mother board.
I'm wondering since the board at the bottom had the problem, if I were to replace that.

Awesome, I'll give it a shot when I get home, see what happens.

I've written up a procedure to determine if a phone's cell radio is working.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=33779273&postcount=1
Finally fixed the damn thing, adjusted the length on either side of the mico coax, the cable isn't being pinched anymore so it works fine. I have a slight problem, though, I have some bright light bleeding from the middle left, and top right of the screen. Maybe because the LED isn't seated flush against the digitizer? Is that what would cause this?
It's minimal, and I don't want to take it apart, but still curious.
Around the screen edge there should be attached to the digitizer a thin foam gasket. If it is missing a piece of the thin foam or if it somehow got disturbed or is not there it most likely is where the bleed is comming from.

I'm surprised we missed this one. There's a new QI wireless car charger that's been announced by Nokia.
Available in May (possibly April) and retails for 69EUR
EDIT: Confirmed, looks like it's compatible with the nexus 4 (see post #11). NFC may be a little tricky though.

Interesting that this was missed in the mainstream news. As long as it fixes the issues that Nokia's home chargers had with the Nexus 4 it'd be something a great buy.
From MobileFun:
"we can confirm that the holder does feature adjustable holders but we do not have specific details on the minimum and maximum size range (we'll update this asap) Although anything close to the Lumia 920 will be suitable."
I'll keep the thread updated with any new relevant information.

Oh man, never thought of a NFC tag for my car dock. Keeping my eye on this.
Nice find! If this works with N4 and actually gains a charge with streaming music BT and navigation I am sold.

Same here, Im really only posting so this thread doesn't get lost in my CP.
Nokia's official blog says it'll be available starting April 2013.
"Known as the CR-200, this phone holder can be mounted on the dashboard or windscreen of your car and can be used in either a horizontal or vertical position – much like any other phone holder.
However, to save you time and hassle from fumbling for the power cable in the footwell, wireless charging is incorporated right into the design. You can leave the holder plugged into the power outlet, as you’re unlikely to be removing that as often as you would the phone. That means all you need to do the next time you sit in the driver’s seat, is slot in your phone to charge.
Additionally, the holder contains an NFC-tag that’s capable of launching predefined apps on your phone. For example, you can choose to automatically launch HERE Drive when you attach your phone – easy!
Retailing at around €69, the CR-200 comes in black and will be available from April 2013."

69 euros is like close to a hundred us dollars? As long as I can return it if it doesn't work I will be first to buy and try.

Anyone wish they would offer these in a light color like white/grey? My old Evo one got hotter than the surface of the sun sitting in my windshield on a long trip (I always took it down to put up a sun screen).
Awww yeah! Works with the nexus 4 (0:50)
Nice! Can't wait to test it.

This thing hardwired will be fantastic
I'm not sure if this is troublesome, but just before the one minute mark, the charger stops charging the phone for a really brief period of time.

It could be a number of things that could have caused that. For one, he could have been fidgeting with the car charger while talking and such. We can't multi task too well lol.
But it looked to be consistently charging after panning away.
The only knock is it looks like, just like the Owlpad, the cable comes out of the bottom of the charger. I really wish they would come out the back towards the mount (or better yet be like the Galaxy Nexus mount and go into the base) to better conceal the wire.
Even though I will be getting this when it comes out.

That should sort you out.

hopefully that is the only downside, im more worried about it being able to charge fast enough with gps on without overheating the phone like the owlpad.
