USB jig - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

First, my apologies for any noobness. I am coming from the Atrix and things are a bit different for the skyrocket.
I have been doing some research in hopes of flashing a rom without CIQ. I want to flash, but I also would like to keep my flash count at zero.
Now I know a USB jig will not erase or decrement the count, but I did read that using the jig to get into download mode then flashing custom binaries will prevent the counter from incrementing.
Could someone please confirm or deny this for me??
Thanks.

Really?? Not a single reply?

a JIG should put in you download mode however it will NOT reset your flash count on a skyrocket. If you flash a rom with CWM it will NOT increase the counter but if you are on 2.3.6 I don't think there are any known ways to root with out increasing the counter.

well...
A usb jig has not kept the custom binary counter from increasing on my phone. However it has pulled my device back from soft brick twice so...best $3 I've invested recently. I believe that after 2.3.4, the ability to reset counter via jig has been removed. I will say the counter on my device 'only' says -3- and I flash between all roms offered in this forum as well as most of the t-mobile offerings...go figure

I just used my usb jig to boot into Recovery mode and flash k0nane's stock .tar using Odin.
Unfortunately, no. It still adds a count to "CUSTOM BINARY DOWNLOAD:" and changes "CURRENT BINARY:" from "SAMSUNG OFFICIAL" to "CUSTOM", EVEN IF you use the jig to boot into Recovery..
At first, I was fooled into thinking that it did work because I don't see the yellow triangle when booting. But when I went into Recovery mode a couple minutes ago, I saw that both lines had changed. ufck
So, the SGH-i727 and the SGH-i777 are an entirely different ballgame. At the very least though, using the jig to boot into FACTORY MODE Recovery will prevent the yellow triangle from showing up when booting.

flash counter only triggers when you flash kernel through Odin!!!!!!!
If you flash anything in cwm or odin it does not trigger!!!!!!!

[GUIDE] USB jig - resetting the download counter - DM Protocol Version 2.0

Since USB jig doesn't work exactly the same way on our SGR compared to SGS II, I recommend an alternative solution.
How to make jig work?
1) Entering the Download mode:
pull the battery out -> plug jig -> insert the battery
or
turn off device -> plug jig -> press power button
2) Resetting the download counter:
Enter DM using one of those two methods above. Once you're there just remove jig, plug usb-cable and install your stock kernel (just to reset the counter) or firmware (in case you want to reset the counter and unroot simultaneously). Right after installation process is started you should see the green text: Success to erasing the record of custom OS! (You can see it on attached picture.)
Remember:
1) This method works only on DM Protocol Version 2.0, for those of you that have v. 2.1 USB jig won't work at all. In your case procedure is more complex, please visit this thread:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1528256
2)You don't have to flash the whole fw-package to reset the counter. It's ok with just stock kernel (only the .tar file though and remember that replacing the kernel WON'T UNROOT your device. To unroot and clear the counter you should reinstall your stock firmware!)
I attached some stock kernels. Please don't ask me to add more. First of all I don't have them and second... you can easily get your own by replacing boot.img from one of the tar-packages below with the original one from your preferred firmware. (USE Total Commander, don't extract packages, simply open them with [ENTER] and copy file from one package to another (F5))
I am trying the second method (insert jig and press power botton), not working. After flashing custom ROM (kernel), it simply reboots as expected (should I disable reboot option in ODIN?).
Would appreciate if someone suggests how to do it right.
Excuse me, but can you write step by step what you did. You cannot enter Download Mode? Or you entered DM and flashed FW but it didn't reset your counter?
Make sure that USB-debugging is checked.
1)enter DM with USB jig
2)remove jig
3)plug usb cable and flash STOCK firmware
It has always worked for me that way.
(Maybe I misunderstood you but...why should you disable auto-reboot option in Odin. Flashing custom kernels increases counter and it has nothing to do with the method I posted above. IT's actually totally opposite. This method is only useful if you just want to erase flashing record, but it won't let you have insecure kernel and 0 on counter.)

I put USB jig in, pressed power button, phone went to download mode.
Tried uploading custom kernel, it wasn't doing the trick. However as you suggested, installing stock ROM worked! But thats quite weird as in SGS2 it works just by inserting the jig.
I agree it's weird
Hello.
I don't want to be off topic but, I would like to ask you when you flashed 2.3.6 from 2.3.4 or 2.3.5 , did your download counter increase?
Of course not it never increases when you flash stock firmware. Only if you flash custom software (with the exception of custom recovery like cwm) via Odin e.g. insecure kernels, custom roms etc.

hey kochan could you shed the goodie on where you get the stock 2.3.4 rom? i tried legion's stock KK5 without getting the magic green words on my screen after the the install kicked start... *frustrated*
I'm flashed 2.3.6 and this tutorial works just fine.
I did the same two days ago with 2.3.6, and everything worked as it was supposed to again. So you must check the jig.
okay.. i got a new jig from the guy, USB debugging checked, tried both methods with ZSKK5 on PDA flashed without luck... argh this is pissing me off what have I done wrong!!!
s4sixty, kochan, did you both flash the stock rom off a custom rom to clear the counter? i have tried dozens time from stock to stock. the only thing i suspect that went wrong was when i enter download mode after jigged, i m always coming from stock-to-stock flash. would that be the case?
guess i m luck out. i m trying different cable to see whether things get better... argh
Tell me: how many custom flashings do you actually have on the counter? What's the number?
i got three bro... would that be the case that i m flash-jigging from a stock to stock rom that's why i m luck out? i m trying different cable.
Ok, number is actually out of relevance (if it's different than 0). Maybe it has something to do with the cable. I thought that flashing FW rewrites bootloader (because it's inside the .tar package). So it shouldn't have major significance here since u used both 2.3.4 and 2.3.6.
You know the only thing that has to be done to succeed is to boot into Download Mode with the help of USB jig (NOT WITH 3buttons combination), then remove jig (DO NOT RESTART) and plug in usb cable directly, then just chose your firmware and press start in Odin. (I always close Kies and all processes related to it before I started any operation in Odin) It has always worked on my device. I have no idea why it doesn't work for you.

It doesn't matter dude when custom roms are installed via CWM and not Odin. I have almost always reflashed from stock to stock. But maybe...I'm not sure but it doesn't harm to start....try to flash stock again, then flash custom kernel, and then turn off mobile, insert usb jig, press and hold power button, u should boot directly into DM, then remove jig -> plug usb cable and ref lash directly. If this doesn't work, then try to find somebody with galaxy R and try the methods i posted on other handset just to make sure if it's hw-related.
yea im totally beat from jigging my SGR these couple days. ah well i guess it is time to fall to the dark side and tune the phone to a no-beater! thanks for the coaching kochan

Hi m.kochan10, can I know more about using the USB jig?
As you mentioned, after booting up using the jig, I need to unplug it and then plugin my USB cable to flash stock ROM thru Odin3. By means of stock ROM, you mean only the factoryfs.img? or the whole things including boot.img, cache.img, factoryfs.img, hidden.img, modem.bin & recovery.img?
Thanks a lot

Ardatdat I'm sorry but in order to reset the counter I have always flashed the whole tar-package that included all those parts you mentioned.
Though...it's worth to test since counter gets erased immediately after installation process is started, so perhaps it can be concluded that...the first part that is being installed is responsible for resetting the number of custom flashings.
I'll try to test it today.
EDIT: IT's boot.img that makes a difference So Ardatdat...take your old .tar file and simply replace your kernel with the stock one, run Odin3 and voila No need to flash the whole FW!
I am thinking of getting an USB Jig and keeping it, just in case (rather than ordering one when needed and waiting for it, till I get it ).
I went through the FAQ's for USB Jigs in this forum. I got an SGR, and from that FAQ what USB Jig is shouldnt be specific for SGS II or SGR. Can you please confirm this before I get one as there were only couple of sellers with I9103 mentioned and most of them had mentioned I9100 specifically.
Thanks.
USB Jig is the same for every samsung device! Just the way it works, differs. On SGS it boots into download mode, removes the triangle and resets the counter right after you inserted it to your phone. On SGR it does each of those things above but not equally automatically. It works and it works effectively, but we have to insert jig, press power button and fe. reflash the stock kernel to get the same effect. No need to worry.
PS. It's so cheap so don't hesitate to buy it!

[Q] Reason: No Kernal (Odin 3 downloading mode)

Today my Samsung galaxy R i9103 turned into brick..
My phone have been rooted following this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1406880 for 5 months and worked well until today
I can't turn on my phone trying all the methods..like taking off the battery and putting it on, removing my SIM and microSD card, pressing volume-+home button+power button...
But the notebook recognizes it as APX when I plug it in
Later, I installed something like a NVIDIA driver
I have found a .bat on other forum, run it and can get into odin 3 download mode now
Under the title(Odin 3 download mode protocol v2), it writes
Reason: No Kernal
Check Signature: Check
Custom Binary Download: No (0 Counts)
Current Binary: Samsung Official
Waitting USB Cable...
and I don't have any other options even rebooting my phone as it just shows me the same page.
1. With this situation, can I simply flash the original ROM using Odin? (someone said it is likely to be a hardware problem but not a software one)
2. Will Samsung know that my phone is rooted and refuse to fix it if I sent it to them ?
3. If yes, will flashing to the original ROM before sending it to them work?
4. Is there any way that I can fix the phone without losing my data inside?
Thanks so much!!!
Your counter is '0' so I think Samsung shouldn't be able to tell you that it was rooted but if they as a policy don't accept handsets in APX mode then we can't be sure about what would be their response.
But did you try your luck with the following method ?

Just the same thing as what I have used
Do you know will I still have my data inside after I flash the original rom again?
And what about the counter, will it increase?
Anyway, thanks
1.Yes. You can Flash a stock ROM in the download mode.
2. If you flash a stock ROM, your download counter will not increase and Samsung will not know you played around with your device.
If you flash some insecure kernel (modified ROMs) via ODIN then counter will increase.
3. You dont have to flash if wanna send them to repair. You are very safe to send it to repair as it is.
4.What ROM version were u on before? Determine that first and try to flash the the boot kernel and see whether u can make it work?
If no luck you can flash a full ROM. You SDcard/usbstorage files will not be deleted. Only the system partition is going to be modified.

I flashed the stock ROM with re-partition and need to wipe all my data to get it working...
if not, it will stuck in a rebooting loop
Do you think it is likely to be caused by rooting?
Or it's a bug which will bring down the whole system?

kies update bricked my aunts phone

I have already used kies once to upgrade my sgh-i727's firmware to ICS. Anyways my aunt asked if i would do hers for her. I ran kies but after the firmware install had started I got an error message asking me to unplug my phone and boot in to recovery mode. However I can only get the phone to boot into odin mode. Either by turning it on normally i get the error:
odin mode
product name: sgh-727
custom binary download: no
current binary: samsung official
firmware upgrade encountered an issue. please select recovery mode in kies & try again.
Or i can boot in to normal odin mode holding the volume up and down keys while plugging the usb port in. Then I choose volume up to load custom rom i end up at the same error.
I did try endlessly booting into recovery mode holding the volume up and down keys while powering on (also tried just up and just down to ensure i wasn't crazy) and while samsung flashes super briefly i again end up in odin mode with the error message. I tried flashing a stock ICS and gingerbread roms via odin 1.85 but it fails saying there is no pit file. I have searched for a pit file to load but have been unable to find one, in fact I noticed I was not the only one unable to locate one for this model phone.
Even without recovery mode I still did try to do a emergency firmware recovery in odin mode (rather sure it wouldn't work but what the heck) to no avail. I am at a total loss. Does anyone have any ideas how to fix this brick aside from haveing her exchange it with ATT? It is only two days old so that is a possibility if worse comes to worse.
I have scoured the forums, Google and everything else I could think of before asking for help so please don't thrash me if i missed something. some help and a point in the right direction is all i ask. thanks!

I just went through the exact same dilemma that the person who created this post did. I thought for sure Kies ruined my phone.
Well I used vincom's resolution and my phone is working again AND I have ICS! Thank you!
Those who are saying thanks should click thanks on Vincom's post as well. Sending one his way for you...lol.

botched an insecure kernel install, phone boots into and is stuck at error message

I was attempting to get an insecure kernel onto my phone (I was really not very smart about it, barely knew anything about rooting and went ahead and did it anyway) And something went wrong- Odin spat out an error saying 0 complete/1 failed and when my phone wouldn't reboot, I took out the battery because I didn't want screen-burn overnight (which now I know was a retarded thing to do).
Whenever the phone boots It gets this message; "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again". And whenever I try to access the phone through odin, i get another error- it attempts to connect to the phone for like 15 mins then says "Device not responding- to resolve the issue, please reboot the device". This of course gives no yield, so I tried something else- I made a jig with 301k ohms of resistance, and tried using that. The only thing that this changes is when the phone reboots, instead of getting
Code:
ODIN mode
PRODUCT NAME: SGH-I727
CUSTOM BINARY DOWNLOAD: NO
CURRENT BINARY: SAMSUNG OFFICIAL
I get
Code:
FACTORY MODE
PRODUCT NAME: SGH-I727

CURRENT BINARY: SAMSUNG OFFICIAL
Any tips/pointers on what I could do? I really want to be able to use my phone again (for obvious reasons)

System Software not authorized by verizon wireless has been found on your phone

I need help guys,
I used Odin to root the phone and did my first custom rom which is the clean rom...it went through the process and when it was about to reboot i got the system software not approved by verizon and take phone to store
I have been told to odin back to stock but it wont let me. The stock image on odin wont work it says fail
I tried the first method and used odin in download mode to flash the stock image
Failed:
This is what I get
added
Odin V3 engine
File Analysis
all threads completed (succeed 0 / Fail 1)
In the Odin Download mode on the phone the top left reads as follow
Odin Mode (Red Letters)
Product Name (SCH-I535)
Custom Binary Download : Yes (1 counts )
Current Binary Custom
System Status Custom
Qualcomm Secureboot: Enable
One thing I gotta mention is that when I got the phone last week it had an OTA update from Verizon which I did install and then a few days later I rooted the phone and when I tried to use Clean Rom it gave me the dreaded Verizon message
Sounds like you didn't unlock the bootloader.
Ya your bootloader is locked again ... unlock it and redo the steps everything should be fine after that
Guys I know that the bootloader is locked but i cannot get back to stock to unroot phone and then unlock the bootloader
Odin recognizes phone but the stock image goes into fail mode right away
I cannot get into recovery and the only thing I can do is go to download mode and Odin but nothing else

You are aware he can Odin flashed the latest OTA instead of that you have provided. Here it is :http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2046439. This will also help fix his phone being that it is recent. Forgot this link to get him back on track: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1974114.
i thought thats what he already tried? but yes you can odin any ota file being that an unlocked bootloader isnt needed.
When I try the VRBLK3 chain it goes into set up connection for like 10 minutes on Odin with a fail at the end each time
I'm not sure being ive never had that issues ... im sorry and good luck

Did you put the file in PDA in Odin they only work if you checked PDA.

I had a similar issue once. This helpful post by h3llsdr0id eventually got me up and running. Took a total of like 4 hours though lol.

Make sure you have the correct files. This is for the original root66 so it's ICS. Once I booted up and activated I took the Verizon OTAs all the way to JB and then rooted/unlocked bootloader.
edit: I actually had to go back to ICS to reprovision my SIM so not sure you have to go through all of this. Try to odin stock JB ROM like mentioned above.
Thank YOU so much guys you have made my day.
After trying all last night and today I got it back to stock with the OTA file through ODIN. That is all I needed and it went right back to brand new stock phone using 4.1.1
WOW.
I thought I was going to have a dead phone.
Thank you all
Glad you got it up and working!!!!!
Yea I had the same problem but all it needed was a handy flash back to stock. The good thing with making these mistakes is that if it happens again you know what to do.

I'm having the same problem and can't get into download mode

Hi there,
Could someone please help me. I bricked my phone 3 days go and went through odin and root66 stock to unbrick it. I installed CWR and backed up everything, then i purchased triangle away to reset the flash counter. When I did that I got the software not authorized by verizon error screen. It won't let me get into download mode or recovery. Can I still try to use odin? What should I do? I'd really appreciate some help today is the 4th day I have been trying to fix my phone, only to make it worse.
Thank you in advance
You have to get into download mode to use Odin. It will go into download mode, if you will search, there are ways to pull battery along with button combo to get it there. After rooting, use EZ Unlock 1.2 and that will unlock your bootloader without then unauthorized message from Verizon. Make sure you use only that version, the others don't work.

Pull battery, hold volume down+home+power keys while you put the battery back in. If that's too many buttons to fumble with at the same time you can try pulling battery, put it back, hold all three keys while plugging it into your computer. My old phone worked that way, idk about the s3. You SHOULD get the download triangle and it asking you if you want to continue. Hit volume up to continue then plug it in and odin should recognize it. Get the stock rom image to flash in the PDA slot of odin. Accept the OTA's until you're up to date then unlock bootloader, root, then flash custom roms/kernels AFTER you've done the appropriate reading. Theres a sticky in development takes you step by step on how to unbrick, then unlock and root. Those should help once you get into download. Hope this helps! :fingers-crossed:

Thank you for your response. I tried pulling the battery out and holding volume down, home and power keys at the same time while putting battery in, even as i plugged it into my phone, but nothing but the unauthorized error screen comes up. I should note that my phone is note 2 not s3. I apologize for posting it here, but this thread seemed to be just like the problem i was having.
