MIUI for XOOM - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

as with the release of v4 miui a while ago, and it being an ICS version. Would anyone be interested or skilled enough in the art of porting that over to our xooms? We now have the EOS version and CM9 port happening, is anyone good enough or a big enough fan to port a miui to xoom, I for one would be a +1 for this... i just wish I was able to code to have a crack myself
Alright...
Maybe this could get a little momentum since MIUI released a page where their source is released, much like CM team does... it is possible that stuff can be used from rogue's rom or EOS rom... they are great with allowing others to download their source and that which would help in the process

+1 here! I've tried my hand at it a bit but I would need some guidance from someone more experienced than I. I really would love to see this worked on and become a reality.

+1 I would probably pay for miui on my xoom. Too bad I can't code or anything useful.

Yeah MIUI beats CM9 hands down

I love miui on my milestone, but i'm not sure it will be as good as the vanilla ics/honeycomb UI on a 10.1 inches screen. I would gladly give it a try though.

you could be right... and i guess themes wouldn't work obviously however, if this source could be gathered up and worked on our xooms, this would entice others on the samsung tabs and acer tabs, and would allow for theme to be made for our devices which to me would be awesome... also; the portrait and landscape nature of our device may be different but it could also usher a new awesomeness to miui, it does look squished in landscape on a phone but on a 10 inch tab it could be sweet

+1 for MIUI on Xoom.
I have it on my phone and it is so beautiful and fast that I can't use any other rom anymore.
If iPad has iPhone's UI, we can easily have MIUI UI on a tablet. And it would be far better because MIUI supports widgets

Ugh. Ok guys look. Before I started my adventures in Xoomland, I worked with miui ALOT. In fact I still do from time to time. First, miui devs did not release their full repo. Just some of their proprietary apps. They are not about about to release the true wonder of miui, the theme engine. That being said, I highly doubt we would be able to achieve full functionality because we don't have full source. Besides, I only use ADWEX as my launcher and personally I don't think miui would be able to compete there. Consider, what does miui do that our builds don't already do? We could include some form of native file manager. The miui native app backup program sucks compared to Titanium. I'll always have a place in my heart for miui, but trust me when I say working without source REALLY SUCKS.

I think so,too.
the advantages of MIUI are stuff like the texting app,the phone app and the launcher. I don't want all my homescreens cluttered with apps on my xoom,it's fine on a phone, but not on a tablet.
In addition, the themes are for 800x480 screens, the xoom could be considered 'xhdpi' because of its resolution,MIUI is for hdpi screens.
It would be nice to see some optimized release of MIUI for tablets, but I don't think that MIUI in it's phone form can compete with ICS on a xoom.

Rumor has it that Miui will start working on the Xoom as soon as they finish their present projects.

I'm all for it. However, as a personal favor to the miui devs, since they never had the courtesy of adding WiMax calls in their android_server library, I look forward to kanging the crap out of any Xoom product they publish, including their tasty theme engine.

Ok seriously...noobnl was our only dev on the cyan team. Is anyone planning on taking it up?
Noobnl can you plz just cme back for a litle get it booting and working ill help!
I had the evo, and noobl your the only reason I switched to the epic. You need to be on the team.
Ok I'm off my soapbox promise
About cyan...could we just replace the anroid.com.phone from the one on the epic? Its the fc u get when u boot up. Id imagine some libs would have to be screwed around with. I'm not that good but am a quick learner so please get at me if you know how to compile and can lead me in the right direction.

I must say Noob, You will be missed. Your andromeda ROM was the first one I tried out on my epic, and I have been eagerly awaiting CM on my phone, but I understand that work/school comes first. I go to college and am an assistant manager at Best Buy Mobile myself >.< the drains on ones time are extensive. But for all the work you've done, thank you!!! Here's hoping you'll leave with Cyanogen Mod Bang!

WOW, didn't except this at all. Very very very sad to see you go Noobnl. Thank you for all your work! We all owe you tons for your work in the community. Hoping to see you back soon
There's a few other people working on this, too. Noobnl did most of the work and effort, but that doesn't mean that because he won't develop anymore this will be dead.

well I guess the main differences between the ACS and the CM Team are that the CyanogenMod team is just better!
I jest I jest. I have used both CM6 on other phones and Syndicate on my Epic and I appreciate the work any dev does. Especially considering how barebones the Epic forums will soon be if things keep going the way they have.
However, the main differences with CM6 and Syndicate have less to do with tweaks and more to do with source. CM is built from the ground up off of pure old android. Off of the original sdk from Google. Syndicate is more or less based off of the latest and greatest Samsung firmware. CM6 isn't just customized to be light (although its always been a huge plus) it also comes with things that just aren't possible through any other ROMs. Touch to focus inside the camcorder for one, or swiping away notifications ala webOS style. Also building in a modified version of the way Sammy did the power widgets in the notification shade from SCRATCH. The menus are much more functional in CM than anywhere else.
The only way to really see why people get so excited here whenever the words "CM6" and "Epic4G" are mentioned in the same sentence is to try it out on a supported device yourself. Than you will see that CM6 is established. They have long been around. They don't just modify ROM's, they create. They make the product that I would love to see come stock from Google. CM6 = One of the best experiences you will ever have running android on your phone. Period.
That is all.

I had CM6 on MTS3g for about 2 months and loved it,CM6 is pure android and is probably the best rom I used but what im sayin is tha Syndicate is pretty damn close to CM6 in terms of responsiveness and speed, but CM6 got extra settings. So if its compiled from scratch what benefits it has over say Syndicate rom besides having more samsung and sprint sht removed?

This is exactly what I'm talking about. I've had about 12 different phones in the last three years or so including the epic. And I have to say one of the most exciting in terms of modding core behaviors was the palm pre. webOS was an OS that almost anyone could gain dev access to and tinker with. Android is (in my opinion) more powerful, and because of that it takes more know-how to mod it, which is why devs like BTThomas22x and all of the ACS and Noobnl and many many others on here deserve a lot more respect than they are given.
But, again, personally, I have yet to really see anyone take android and mold it the way the CyanogenMod Team has. I bought the epic on day one, mainly for the screen and the hummingbird.. but I almost chose the EVO at the last minute because it already had Cyanogen on it. The wait is long.. but the results will be worth it!
I wish those dumb mf's that make webos would just make large screen phone, webos is really atractive but small screen keeps people from buying it,how those corporate people keep their jobs is beyond me.

LMAOOO I totally agree! Then again, thats part of why palm sunk and was bought up by HP. The hardware didn't attract enough customers, so dev's didn't really support it, so app's not enough apps got made, so even more people stayed away from it. pretty soon a lot of devs left it too. Its a sad thing when an OS launches with only 14 apps. and its even sadder when 3 months later nothing has changed.
And all of this is totally skipping over the fact that Palm chose to launch on a carrier that didn't have the service it needed and didnt get the advertising to survive.
Ah, well. We're getting off topic tho lol Android for the win!

Lol. I agree. People always laugh when I tell them the Pre was on of my favorite phones. All it needs is better hardware, then more people would buy then the developers would develop.

[ROM-AOSP][02-23-2012] Evervolv | GRJ90/Android 2.3.5 | v1.2.0a3 | Updated Links

Alright ladies and gentlemen, I am glad to finally bring you the Evervolv series of ROM's.
First thing I would like to say is that this rom would not be possible without the CyanogenMod team. I am merely here to bring you how I like my phone setup and give you more options over a base build of the gingerbread genre. My qualifications are inferior to what is required on some of the fixes that were made. Thus I rely on the CyanogenMod Team for their expertise in these fields.
The current team of Evervolv constists of:
preludedrew - Droid Incredible, Evo 4G, Evo Shift 4G & Nexus one maintainer; overall support & development
mwielgosz - Liberty, Evo 4G, Evo 3D maintainer; Java development
cocide - Evo 4G; Web; Linux and overall support & development; Viewsonic GTab maintainer/support
milesje - Evo 4G; java and overall support & development
Adhvanit - Graphics and Droid Incredible support.
RyteSyde - web and graphics development; Evo Shift 4G support
TpyoKnig - Web support and hosting.
smoothtaste - heroc support/maintainer

Q&A
Is this CM7?
No, this is a build that started from AOSP. However, some of the fixes and few features have been derived from the CyanogenMod Team, including the CM kernel.
How social is the evervolv team?
You can join us on IRC, irc.freenode.net #evervolv. Or follow preludedrew and the status of Evervolv @preludedrew on twitter.

It's not 100% ready for mainstream use but I expect that to change in the next day or so. Also, there are a number of tweaks and modifications that were part of the Savaged-Zen ROM (my old dev team) that I wrote which I plan on bringing into Evervolv once time allows.
That said, expect some cool stuff to happen with this ROM over the next few weeks!
Very cool! Can't wait to try it out
Sleek!
Promising!
Thanks!
Tried it out. Hardware functions seem to work well. Was able to Bluetooth pair with my laptop and transfer a file (can't find my headset ATM). WiFi seems to work well, GPS lock was quick indoors. I don't know if it's just the weather or what, but GPS seems better than CM7. That is, if I exit Maps and do some other stuff for a few mins, CM7 would always try (and struggle) to locate me again, even if I haven't moved. This ROM seems to retain that info better, if that makes any sense.
Status bar notifications seem to be working. My wifi icon turned green when connecting to Google services, but not the signal bars--don't know if that is by design.
Power widgets are nice and work well.
Sent and received an SMS without problems.
Really like the slide up dock tray in the launcher!
Forgot to test hotspot...
hope this helps some
Edit: but yes, there are a ton of Google framework/Apps FCs, which you already know about.
great!waiting for more stable version soon, thank you!
phone/dialer fc's every time I open it, but other than that I love it.
Awesome. Been waiting for pure AOSP experience. I'll give this a shot later on today. Thanks for adding another ROM to the Liberty Collection!

For an alpha this is very stable and snappy.
Just a constructive remark: the choice of the font needs to be re-evaluated, it makes certain things very hard to read...not very "ergonomic" to the eyes...
Keep up the good work !

I agree with the change of font and we've talked internally about this matter. I'm going to post flashable zips with stock and good looking fonts soon. The default font included won't change but I will offer options soon.
There is a thread in the evo4g forums that offer over 300 flashable fonts. They work with this rom and are worth looking into. Personally, I prefer the Ubuntu 10.10 font offered in that thread.

I haven't flashed this yet, but see if replacing DroidSans.tff & DroidSans-Bold.tff in /system/fonts does the trick. You could pickup the CM7 fonts, or try any other True-Type font.
EDIT: Type Fresh, created by XDA member openback, also lets you change fonts. http://www.xda-developers.com/android/type-fresh-change-fonts-on-your-rooted-android-device/
Just tried it, pretty smooth. A few things that bug me: 1, the colorized icons, maybe make a flashable zip that make them stock again? 2, the font, already been covered so I ain't gonna say much except that when I flash the Ubuntu font, some letters are boxes, happens in other ROMs too. Fixable? And that's all I gotta say, otherwise I really like it, good job!

MIUI for g1? Is it possible?

Hey you guys I was just looking at miui 2.3.4 video, and its just amazing... I was wondering if it is possible to port miui to the g1? If not, why? If yes, why don't we as a community do it, i mean we got gingerbread and gingerbread sense to work on our 3 year old phone.. I don't see why we can't MIUI as well?
For those of you who have never seen MIUI.. just watch this.. and you'll see why i am so anxious to get this ported to our devices:

After using MIUI, on my MT4G, I have doubts about it being ported to the G1. For starters MIUI is closed sourced, by the Chinese Devs....Next you'll have to find a Dev who would port it from a supported device with MIUI. And only HDPI phones have MIUI, AFAIK. So the chances are very slim, MIUI is of course, quite hefty like Ginger but with even more features. You will also need drivers for MIUI to work on the G1, the G1 shares no HW drivers with MIUI supported phones, so that too has to be sorted, then the images may look distorted when shrunk for the smaller screen and such. Best bet would to get a newer phone w/ MIUI support, or get the Millet M1, Miui phone.

Yea you are correct on that, its only for HDPI devices, and its closed source...but i cant see why we can't do it.. if we get enough developers to work on this, i think we can actually do it..

You will need to find some dedicated devs then, I haven't been it this section for almost a year, but from what I see there aren't many G1 devs left. Which is to be expected from the 1st ever Android phone in the world.

I know, but we can get help from the magic devs since their phone is almost like ours. And other devs from other devices can help too. Just as long as we get it ported.

DelsaDj started the work on MIUI last year but left after a couple of alpha versions.
Then JunkDruggler developed MIUI theme (available in the market) which almost ended the need for a full rom.
MIUI launcher (xda) and QQ launcher pro (android market) perform almost all functions of MIUI rom.
Currently iMagic rom is being worked on by jCarrz and ThauExodus. It is exactly same as. MIUI, but fitted to work on G1.
So alot of effort has been put into it and it's still underway. Threads can be found in G1 development section.

[ROM][Metro][MIUI] Metro UI ROM for Android

So at this point I would like to think that I am no stranger to Android development, however, as I move into the world of ROMs this is clearly not the case. I have had a number of people suggest that as part of the Seven+ Project we developer a WP7/ Metro UI ROM. I think that is a great idea, but just do not know where to begin.
With that said I would like people's feedback on the following:
Would you use such a ROM?
What features would you expect in such a ROM?
What ROM/ source should it be based off of?
What is preferable, open or closed source?
Would you be interested in working on a ROM?
With the unimaginable success of MIUI it has come to my intention that open source may not also be the way to go. Also, I would like to reach as many devices as possible but am not sure how. Basically, I am no ROM maker and that is why I really need people's feedback. This could be the next major ROM, or a novelty that few if any find valuable. So please, let me know what you think and who knows, perhaps we can get started on a ROM!

I'd use it,
I would like to see integration into social networks
maybe based on CyanogenMod, that way it may be easier to port to lots of devices?
Open source would be nice too
I would certainly try out the rom, I mean it would be a brand new experience. Now I would expect a full WP7 experience and with the innovations of Android (Take a look at HTC Sense, You can get some ideas what people like there). I agree this should be based off of Cyanogenmod. It has a large user base and should be easier to port from device to device. I tend to disagree with your view of closed sourced is better. Sure MIUI has been successful but it's no where near where it could of been if it was open, and also don't forget it's also based off cyanogenmod which is open sourced which allowed such creations as MIUI to be made. Open sourced allows software to become better and having it closed source just limits the rom. I don't have many if any skills for developing a rom, but if you needed testers I would be glad to help.

Definitely, I thought about even making one but lots of the items are paid for items and it's against XDA rules to add pay-for items into a ROM.
What features would you expect in such a ROM?

Launcher, Status Bar (Native, not an app), contacts, phone, framework-res mods (so the WP7 look is universal, and not just limited to the app alone), WP7 style texting app, keyboard, Lockscreen, and more.

Cyanogenmod 7. However with MIUI's theme engine it would be a better choice, but then it would be more of a theme and less of a ROM. Also you might have issues if you're using the status bar + app, since for some reason, it appears under MIUI's status bar.
What is preferable, open or closed source?

Anything Windows styled shall remain closed source, while Android itself remains open source.

Sure, depending on the circumstances. Could simply port to myTouch 4G from DHD, or G2 (or it can be the other way around) and have a synchronized release.. or other options.
My 2 Cents.
Very Good!
Yes Please! WP7 with google apps? Who doesn't want that?
So it seems that either only people interested in such a ROM found this forum post and replied, or people really do want a Metro UI ROM.
The closed/ open source issue is one we could ultimately decide on in the future, but making the UI open source would essentially eliminate the profitability of my work, and if the absolutely impossible were to occur and M$ realizes that Android could be a better Metro UI platform than WP7 should it be open source it would simply become theirs.
As for framework modifications that is certainly my intent. There is no reason TabHost could not be replaced with a Pivot control, use the same API perhaps with a custom XML namespace for additional control, and simply ignore the icons. Much of the same goes for menus and contextual menus. Other features like Panoramic controls would be additional features that would need to be explitictly used.
Now the suite of applications is important, and likely leads to a potential profit area. The ROM could be on XDA because it would be free, and for a fee all applications could be unlocked to become the full featured version. I certainly think CM would be a great base because of its broad compatibility. Otherwise thanks everyone for the feedback, I hope to get more soon.

Being completely honest here, but no, I wouldn't use it no matter how good it was.
The simple reason being that I really don't like that people keep trying to emulate the look and feel of OTHER mobile OS's in Android. What's wrong with Android's OWN look and feel? We should be trying to make THAT stand out as much as possible, not pretend to be the competition!

I would definitely use it! I feel like it's very important though that it has the feel of your UI demo App. With the notifications being the same access color and coming from the top. Pop-up 7 just doesn't really cut it when it comes to that. The variable alphas and low res buttons make it seem quickly put together. That being said I've been wondering for a while when/how you were planning on putting together/implementing a rom that had ALL of the components together and meshing well. I'm really excited to see this and will be checking back often (if not daily). Thanks for all your good work!
I would use it! if it's compatible with HTC wildfire, nobody work on ldpi device neither roms nor themes, only cm give somenthing compatible for us, an alternative would be appreciated, especially if it is somenthing light such as the wp7 ui

Why? It is simple: Android has a terrible user experience and from the looks of things (Honeycomb, ICS leak) it is not getting any better. That, and who even gets to see Android anymore? Carriers even with Honeycomb slab their UI and suite on top of Android to the point were frankly it no longer is Android.
I guess then the question is why make a WP7 ROM. Well the Metro UI is simple and effective, not to mention it could be easily done more performant than other (cough, Sense) UIs. Also, I have a great deal of code for Android that can give it that look and feel.
While a suite of applications is great it does not cut it. There is simply too much that can only be done as a ROM. Lately Android has been becoming more closed (no HC source, removal of APIs and permissions from the SDK), so before its too late I should think most would be happy that they get the best of both worlds: Android has a large application catalog and WP7 a great UI.
Just my though process, and if I can find developers to collaborate with I would love to begin a fork of CM7 for this ROM.

i would definitely like to help on this ROM, and I totally agree cyanogen should be used as a base.
but, it wouldn't be that hard to compile everything on top of cyanogen, but building the replacing apks is a lot harder. for those, I should knock on the door from the devs from www.wp7android.com they have already a great start with several applications. And maybe they are interested too in creating a ROM.
So if you would like to let me join you, you got your chef for the desire s.
Edit:
And because I don't know everything, I'd learn from this too.

Most of the devs in Seven+ project are from Wp7android.com which kinda collasped as far as I can see
A WP7 Rom would be great. I would use it. CM7 is probably the best AOSP platform to adapt, imho.
Would you use such a ROM?
Of course
What features would you expect in such a ROM?
Speed and less CPU consumption.
What ROM/source should it be based off of?
Nexus Prime or Sony Arc S
What is preferable, open or closed source?
Open Source
Would you be interested in working on a ROM?
I try my best to give suggestion or design a few things for it.

Will Miui retain its position after ICS Launch?

As everyone are quite certain of ICS launch thats about to take place in Hong Kong of 19th of October . My question here is that , will MIUI be consistent in their regular updates? Will users perfer downloading MIUI Custom ROM even after the amazing UI coming inbuilt with ICS
Are they worth compromising? Whats the future of MIUI?
Or will MIUI look forward to adopt ICS Source code and alter it according to their needs keeping in mind their own alterations?
This thread is mainly for views/suggestions/opinions thats it
Cheers guys.
I hope miui disappear off the face of the earth.
Bunch of kangers who won't admit they steal code from CyanogenMod...

Well I guess I did hear from quite a lot of people who actually make regular builds like Danny himself telling that MIUI is built using CM7 source. I dont know the inside news.
The UI of miui is great , but then still it gives you an Iphonish look , so why not users go and buy an Iphone rather then bricking their device with Iphone look alike UI leaving the great android UI behind.
Don't like MIUI, so couldn't care less.
Don't think MIUI is going anywhere. I mean why would they? There are already a ton of launchers out there that look far better than the ICS one we've been seeing lately, and MIUI is still here so why would one more change that?

Because even if MIUI ROM was never created, people would use launchers like Go Launcher , Claystone (new in the market ) and several others.
And I bet ICS UI is not worth leaving for launchers like LP , ADW , Go Launcher and QQ , definitely NO .
Rumors are speculating at a rapid pace for ICS not just because its a new addition to Google race , but because it also has good and user friendly interface (expected from google) .
MIUI will find some trouble I guess.

agreed
people would be better off learning how to theme, than to slap on pre-themed CM mods
I don't see anything amazing about the ICS UI, MIUI looks good, and it's pretty well known that it's from CM source. There's a lot better looking themes for MIUI too.
I think MIUI will take the ICS under its wings and will release same iPhone like UI in the future also
Wow, a lot of hate on here. Yay internets!
Personally on my model of phone (desire) cyanogenmod (incl 7.1) runs nowhere near as fast and has far worse battery life - doesn't even come close. The other launchers I really dislike in comparison too, not just the effects but the general "snappiness" of dashboard switching. Currently on MIUI XJ 1.9.9 and whilst it's unfortunate if there is code stolen without credit given - there are clearly things MIUI have done right/better otherwise I'd be straight back to CM (on CM imediashare works for one thing!). I occasionally get random resets on CM too unfortunately, 7.1 no change. Could be somewhat hardware related fault but I've only got one device!
As for ICS - I won't hold my breath on it being more usable or stable, but I would like to see what the MIUI teams could do with it as they've consistently made the most stable and fastest rom I've ever used.
Go MIUI GO
MIUI saved mine SGS. The proximity sensor crashes mine sgs and miui is the only rom that gives me the option to disable this sensor. So no more crashing on phonecalls. I started using miui because i had to. But i have a very good looking theme (NeonGT (with default font)) and i am loving using it. So ik hope MIUI stays as long as they give me the option to disable de proximity sensor.
Miui Fanboy..
I cant say whether Miui steal code.. but for the Sony Xperia x10, I was about to bin this phone.. such a dog of a phone.. until I put TripnRavers Miui onto it..
consequently i sold my iphone 4 that's how much i loved it.
Nearly all android phones can do the same things. Miui just looks sexy, not like its been stuck together with a widget here & there that dont match.. If google could copy the miui notifications area, I'd be happy.
