ics upgrade for sprint nexus s 4g - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi, i am planning on purchasing a sprint nexus s 4g. i already have a phone with a contract so i will not be activating it. i was wondering if i could officially upgrade the sprint nexus s 4g to ics without connecting to the sprint network or registering the phone. then would i be able to unlock and root? what i am really asking is will phones that are not connected to a cellular network still get the OTA upgrade or not.
thank you

I can't speak for the NS4G, since I don't have one, but I did just load a stock rom on my Evo Shift 4G that I am selling. The phone is not activated right now, and was only connected to wifi. I went to check for updates, and I was able to update to the latest version available on the Shift. YMMV. I've also done the same thing on an old Evo 4G. Only connected to wifi, and was able to apply updates.
Also, has the ICS update for the Sprint version been released yet?

There is no ICS OTA for the NS4G yet. When there is you should be able to update over wifi. Or you'll be able to just grab the OTA as a flashable zip from here once its released.

can you get ota with the bootloader unlocked? or do you have to relock it before you can get it.

I'm fairly certain you need to relock the phone, and then apply the update. The update won't process if the hboot is unlocked. From there, you will be able to unlock the phone again, to gain root access.

I'm new to the NS4G myself so I may be wrong but I've read many people post that you can still get OTAs with an unlocked bootloader and rooted. Supposedly you just have to be on a stock ROM already and can't have made any changes to any system files.

[Q] will I be able to get OTA updates if phone is unlocked ?

If I unlock my sensation and use it on a non t Mobile network, will I be able to get the OTA update htc is pushing out in august to unlock the bootloader?
Yes you will still be able to. If your phone is branded to t-mobile it the update might take a bit longer as T-Mobile need to approve the update.

If you flashed cwm recovery, you are unable to update by ota.And i think,if you have unlocked your phone, why not use custom roms, they are much better than official roms.If you use custom roms, ota is not necessary at all.
I thought you can't flash custom roms with a locked bootloader?
i think he is talking about sim unlocking?

Yes, sorry should have clarified , I meant sim unlock.
My SIM unlocked Bell unit (on Rogers) received the OTA update last week no problem!

Un-root & lock Galaxy Nexus?

Earlier I unlocked and rooted my Sprint Galaxy Nexus using GNextoolKit 7.9. I did not flash a different ROM. I have Android 4.0.4 L700.FG01.
Since the news is that Sprint is pushing JB out starting today, I would like to bring my phone back to stock and allow the OTA update.
I probably will not unlock again until a K version appears.
Is there a step-through to restore to stock using GNexToolKit 7.9? I am afraid I need pretty detailed guidance.
As far as I know you don't need to re-lock your Nexus to receive OTA updates, and I don't know if you need to unroot, but you might lose root after update anyway

Agreed... some roms include stopping ota updates so it's not the unlocked bootloader that stops updates. You should get the update but you may lose root afterwords.

[Q] official update issue with verizon

My friend accidently bought HTC one M8 verizon from UAE, the phone is new with kitkat 4.4.2, everything is fine but when he tried to update the rom, it failed and says that software update only works in CDMA mode, this is what i actually dont understand, is this locked or unlocked mobile? and is there any possibility to unlock this phone like normal unlocked M8?
To actually update the software via ota you will have to be on Verizon's network. It comes globally unlocked meaning that it is capable of being used on other networks and such, but the problem you are running into is the fact that you are not on Verizon's network so you cannot update their software. If you are s-off there are stickies that contain the firmware and updated bootloaders that you can flash so that your software is all up to date. If you are still s-on and want to update I believe there is a 4.4.4 RUU that works for s-on in that same thread. If you are wanting to s-off it will prolly be easier to use sunshine on 4.4.2 since it works without problems, where on 4.4.4 you can get s-off with sunshine, however there are some users who are still not able to get it yet.

All you need is a verizon sim card. Install it, get the update and after it finishes, replace it with your carrier sim card again.

You could be right.
My point is that I used a verizon sim card (deactivated) to download two updates via wifi. The phone probably wants to verify that somehow the phone is in verizon's network and checks the sim card only. My m8 also was 4.4.2, after two updates now is 4.4.4.

I like to think this would be simple. Perhaps you can help?

Here's what I got. ATT LG G3 running stock Marshmallow D85030p with what I presume is the newest security patch (June 2016)
At this point it's not on a carrier but it's locked by ATT. They kept my number as well.. A number that was mine from previous carriers.
Will I be able to root, install TWRP, and unlock this device to use on a prepaid carrier? Keep in mind this same phone has been flashed, rooted and ran recovery mods and ROMs before. Still in perfect working condition after receiving it's last stock OTA.

First of all what do you mean they kept your number? Did you cancel? Unpaid bill? That would be a deciding factor on how to go about things.
But no root cannot unlock your device
1. If you left AT&T in good standing AT&T will unlock the device for free. Even if you don't have any account.
2. If not then you can get it unlocked for a few dollars from some eBay sellers.
3. What prepaid carrier? If Any provider that runs on AT&Ts network you don't have to get it unlocked, it will work fine with Go Phone, Cricket , H2O and many others that run on AT&Ts network.
But a note if it's no longer on AT&T due to unpaid bill, or on bad terms remember the device may no longer work on any GSM carrier within the USA due to AT&T will blacklist it.

I understand root alone won't unlock it. With all that being said can I still root and flash a recovery method that are permanent? Does MM still not have a reliable root or recovery method?

You would need to downgrade to KitKat to do that. But remember once you downgrade you'll no longer be able to go back to any official firmware Past KitKat without an AT&T SIM card of some sort to ota update it.
Also remember if you get an unlock code you need to be running stock D850 firmware or else you won't be able to enter the unlock code.

Are there any unofficial MM or Lollipop ROMs that are worth looking into? I couldn't care less if it's official honestly. And that last bit you said, you mean if I wanted a phone unlocked I'd have to basically wipe my phone?

If you unlock before you leave behind stock then no you don't have to wipe. Once you install any custom ROM, your only option to unlock at that point is to revert back to stock, which means wiping.

Yes you can, if you are on stock. You will need to get the unlock code from AT&T, be on stock firmware, and have an active SIM card from another carrier (I.e. T-Mobile or of it's MVNOs like MetroPCS). Once you have the unlock code, put in the SIM card, turn on the phone, and you will get the prompts for the code you got. Then you're done.

use Verizon locked international

Can you use a Verizon bootloader locked Pixel 2 international? With another simcard?
And is it possible to flash an ota file from Google on it and not the Verizon version? Or is that not needed?
Thanks
I'm pretty sure all phones manufactured after a certain year(think it was 2014) were made so they can be used anywhere. As long as it has the necessary bands. You will not be able to flash other firmware, unless the bootloader gets unlocked and root becomes available...

The Verizon version is EXACTLY the same as the Google version. It is unlocked and will work anywhere in the world. Since software updates come directly from Google you won't have to worry about getting OTA's either.

Yes, you can use the Verizon version withe the locked bootloader, internationally. I have one in the EU, running on Vodafone. Runs without issues.
Verizon prevents you from getting over the air updates unless you have an activated Verizon sim and the phone comes with a deactivated Verizon sim pre-installed. When I got mine it was two versions behind and on the September security patch. I tried all sorts of tricks to get it to update with my Vodafone sim, with the Verizon sim, but the best I could get it to do was say there was an update available before it bailed out one me. However, using adb and the Google images for OTA's they provide I was able to flash each update no problem using a USB cable.
Hope this helps!

Just an FYI, they are slightly different. The phone itself is carrier unlocked. Any carrier can use the Verizon version just like a non-Verizon version. The difference is the Verizon bootloader is locked down, can't unlock that (unless you got one way early, on 7.1 or something like that). You also only get OTA updates for the Verizon version if you have an active Verizon sim in the phone. Manually updating using the OTA files from Googles website works with ADB, so not a big deal, but makes it a little more manual and technical than it would be otherwise. You'll notice there are different OTA's and different versions used for Verizon's files - keeping them slightly different.

You can't flash images on the Verizon version. The bootloader needs to be unlocked, and that obviously isn't happening. I don't think it matters which sim you have in the Verizon version, you'll get OTA updates no matter what. The phones aren't as different as you guys think. The only reason there are different factory images for the Verizon version is they install Verizon bloat on first boot.
