use Verizon locked international - Google Pixel 2 Questions & Answers

Can you use a Verizon bootloader locked Pixel 2 international? With another simcard?
And is it possible to flash an ota file from Google on it and not the Verizon version? Or is that not needed?
Thanks

I'm pretty sure all phones manufactured after a certain year(think it was 2014) were made so they can be used anywhere. As long as it has the necessary bands. You will not be able to flash other firmware, unless the bootloader gets unlocked and root becomes available...

The Verizon version is EXACTLY the same as the Google version. It is unlocked and will work anywhere in the world. Since software updates come directly from Google you won't have to worry about getting OTA's either.

It's not quite the same. It is unlocked, but the bootloader cannot be unlocked.

Yes, you can use the Verizon version withe the locked bootloader, internationally. I have one in the EU, running on Vodafone. Runs without issues.
Verizon prevents you from getting over the air updates unless you have an activated Verizon sim and the phone comes with a deactivated Verizon sim pre-installed. When I got mine it was two versions behind and on the September security patch. I tried all sorts of tricks to get it to update with my Vodafone sim, with the Verizon sim, but the best I could get it to do was say there was an update available before it bailed out one me. However, using adb and the Google images for OTA's they provide I was able to flash each update no problem using a USB cable.
Hope this helps!

Just an FYI, they are slightly different. The phone itself is carrier unlocked. Any carrier can use the Verizon version just like a non-Verizon version. The difference is the Verizon bootloader is locked down, can't unlock that (unless you got one way early, on 7.1 or something like that). You also only get OTA updates for the Verizon version if you have an active Verizon sim in the phone. Manually updating using the OTA files from Googles website works with ADB, so not a big deal, but makes it a little more manual and technical than it would be otherwise. You'll notice there are different OTA's and different versions used for Verizon's files - keeping them slightly different.

You can't flash images on the Verizon version. The bootloader needs to be unlocked, and that obviously isn't happening. I don't think it matters which sim you have in the Verizon version, you'll get OTA updates no matter what. The phones aren't as different as you guys think. The only reason there are different factory images for the Verizon version is they install Verizon bloat on first boot.

If your are on GSM networks outside U.S., it won't be carrier locked to Verizon, whatever ROM you're using. SIM lock on GSM networks is only valid in U.S. by default (though could be worked around).
So you can upgrade to KitKat, your phone won't be SIM locked.

It will probably say that SIM is from unknown source, but you can ignore this, it won't affect your usage.
I cannot comment on the KitKat update, as I have not received my XT926 yet. You could check out the topics in the forum like this one:

Of course, if your experience with the KitKat update will not be good, you can go back to JB, as the bootloader of these phones can be unlocked.

I would suggest possibly NOT taking the update that is being sent to the phone as it MIGHT be the newest OTA which fixes the bootloader unlock and Towelroot exploits. People have reported getting this update that are not part of the soak.
Instead, ignore it and go and get the FXZ for the Kit Kat and flash that via RSDLite or House of Moto. That way, you can then go and root with Towelroot and then unlock the bootloader.
After that, THEN take any OTAs after that. If the current OTA that is getting pushed to his phone is from the latest soak, then if he takes it, he will NOT be able to unlock the bootloader NOR root his phone.

No biggie. The latest soak I believe just started getting pushed out in the last couple of days. I was part of the soak test, but I've since gone back to CM11 which is better IMHO, especially with the WiFi.

You're confusing the SIM lock and the bootloader lock. The phone is not SIM locked outside the U.S., so don't worry about that.
The bootloader unlock is what allows you to install custom ROMs via a custom recovery.

You're surprised? Why? They don't want unlocking the bootloaders on the XT926s in the first place. The whole bootloader unlocking of the XT926 was due to a security exploit, not because Moto allowed it.
On JB, there was a version that allowed the bootloader to be unlocked until they patched it.
Then, when the initial Kit Kat OTA came out back in May/June, they accidentally re-introduced the bootloader unlock exploit. After the initial OTA, another soak test started and with that, they fixed the exploit again, so nothing surprising there.
This is the FXZ you want to flash to your phone (do NOT take the OTA just in case it's the latest soak which patches the exploit that was re-introduced with the first KK OTA) -> http://sbf.droid-developers.org/download.php?device=5&file=902
Go here to learn how to flash it and then unlock your bootloader -> http://www.droidrzr.com/index.php/topic/46155-rootunlock-442-182183-razr-hdm-only/

Correct, the developers edition can always be unlocked, no matter what. But, not many have the developers edition as it was a limited release.
Most XT926 devices are the non-developer's edition and can only be unlocked via an exploit.

XT1028 (USA VZW PP) Flash to another carrier?

Okay so I bought a used XT1028 on Amazon, and was disappointed that I couldn't root it due to the eternally locked bootloader (thanks to stock 4.4.4).
So I decided to stick with stock until the Lollipop update comes. I talked to Motorola, who told me to contact VZW. I called VZW, and after a few forwards, found out my device is "PIB Locked" which means it needs to be scanned at a Verizon store so it can be activated.
I don't want to do that, nor do I think that'll help.
So after some research, found out that I might need to flash another carrier to be able to get the Lollipop update.
How true is that, and how do I do so? I'm no stranger to flashing a ROM, but a carrier might require some learning.

USCC V20 (US996) Bootloader Unlock/Root Discussion

Just a thread for the few USCC people here - I've tried to UL the bootloader using TMO instructions - no go. It will reboot into the bootloader but it asks for the unlock.bin key (fastboot oem unlock returns an unknown command error). So at least theirs that much
Phone will also boot into recovery, and I get the associated normal options there (clear, mount /system, wide device/cache, load update via ADB, load update via SD, view recovery logs, etc). Interesting thing happens when I select "run graphics test" from the recovery menu - it gives an error, then the "no command" icon, then multicolor circles rotating - but it says "erasing" then "installing system update" then goes back to the recovery menu. Not sure if it's normal, but it's interesting.
I'm not a dev or a software guy really, but would like to hear some thoughts on the USCC version...would love to have root like the TMO - especially since it will get into the fastboot menu. Wish I knew more so I could be more help.
Same I'd like to here more about this since the unlocked version comes with an unlocked bootloader. I think it's because the T-Mobile version got released first so they had the jump start, and the unlocked version took till the 11th to be released so it's like we're late.

I recommended the officially unlocked variant of the V20 to @Abumarf believing he'd have no issues whatsoever in unlocking the bootloader. He purchased one off eBay before the phone was officially released and I believe it came with a user debug kernel. It seems similar to the engineering kernels for Samsung devices, as he has root access through the adb shell. Unlike the temporary root method that @me2151 had posted, it can survive reboots. Yet I'm surprised the fastboot command to unlock the bootloader returns with failure.

yeah, the US cellular us996. it's different from the American unlocked us996. according to LG anyway, it lists it as two different phones.
I'm not on a US cellular one. I'm in an unlocked one with Verizon. the post above you said unlocked had unlocked bootloader. mines as unlocked as you get, and it doesn't have an unlocked bootloader.

Make yourselves heard. Let LG know we want the bootloader to be unlockable on the US996. I've talked to their live chat and they claim that they "didn't know people would want to unlock their bootloader". Show them we do.

Installed wrong version

I'm in a Verizon pixel and installed "v" version instead of "u" everything is working. What's different about the international version?
Just a fix for European carriers. I'm using the same on Verizon as well with no issues. You're good.

Nothing it will work just fine. From what I understand just a slight difference for Europe. It will be fine.
What I'd like to know is if I were completely stock on V, bootloader relocked, what updates would I get, if any? Would I get the next version for Europe, or would it be the other? I'm in the US on Verizon (device from Google).

You probably wouldn't get any updates. The trigger for that version probably wouldn't get to you. But I am not certain on that. Might be able to pull it via wifi with no SIM in it.
Do NOT relock your bootloader unless it is just before you are going to put it in a box to send back for warranty.

What I'd like to know is if I were completely stock on V, bootloader relocked, what updates would I get, if any? Would I get the next version for Europe, or would it be the other? I'm in the US on Verizon (device from Google).

Why would you think you'd get the European version if you are in the US? Did I miss something in your question? You'd get the U version if you're on Verizon and you can lock and relock the bootloader at your discretion since you have the Google Pixel. I mean if you want to keep wiping your data each time, that is.

He made it sound like his pixel is from Verizon. In that case he can't lock and unlock the bootloader whenever he wants.
To the OP. What are you trying to do? It doesn't matter if you are on V. If it makes you feel better just flash U then. As long as you don't have twrp or root you will still get OTAs. Why would you want to lock your bootloader? You can have an unlocked bootloader and still take normal OTAs just fine . it its a Verizon sold pixel you won't be able to unlock once you lock.

Just a fix for European carriers. I'm using the same on Verizon as well with no issues. You're good.

It was certainly a little bit confusing, however, the last part of his post it said.. (device from Google) so I figured it was a GPixel activated on Verizon.

I like to think this would be simple. Perhaps you can help?

Here's what I got. ATT LG G3 running stock Marshmallow D85030p with what I presume is the newest security patch (June 2016)
At this point it's not on a carrier but it's locked by ATT. They kept my number as well.. A number that was mine from previous carriers.
Will I be able to root, install TWRP, and unlock this device to use on a prepaid carrier? Keep in mind this same phone has been flashed, rooted and ran recovery mods and ROMs before. Still in perfect working condition after receiving it's last stock OTA.

First of all what do you mean they kept your number? Did you cancel? Unpaid bill? That would be a deciding factor on how to go about things.
But no root cannot unlock your device
1. If you left AT&T in good standing AT&T will unlock the device for free. Even if you don't have any account.
2. If not then you can get it unlocked for a few dollars from some eBay sellers.
3. What prepaid carrier? If Any provider that runs on AT&Ts network you don't have to get it unlocked, it will work fine with Go Phone, Cricket , H2O and many others that run on AT&Ts network.
But a note if it's no longer on AT&T due to unpaid bill, or on bad terms remember the device may no longer work on any GSM carrier within the USA due to AT&T will blacklist it.

I understand root alone won't unlock it. With all that being said can I still root and flash a recovery method that are permanent? Does MM still not have a reliable root or recovery method?

You would need to downgrade to KitKat to do that. But remember once you downgrade you'll no longer be able to go back to any official firmware Past KitKat without an AT&T SIM card of some sort to ota update it.
Also remember if you get an unlock code you need to be running stock D850 firmware or else you won't be able to enter the unlock code.

Are there any unofficial MM or Lollipop ROMs that are worth looking into? I couldn't care less if it's official honestly. And that last bit you said, you mean if I wanted a phone unlocked I'd have to basically wipe my phone?

If you unlock before you leave behind stock then no you don't have to wipe. Once you install any custom ROM, your only option to unlock at that point is to revert back to stock, which means wiping.

Can I unlock it myself?

Yes you can, if you are on stock. You will need to get the unlock code from AT&T, be on stock firmware, and have an active SIM card from another carrier (I.e. T-Mobile or of it's MVNOs like MetroPCS). Once you have the unlock code, put in the SIM card, turn on the phone, and you will get the prompts for the code you got. Then you're done.
