Well, another day, another thread. Here I'd like to talk about HTC and their general lack of the ability to innovate that seems to have come with the release of the hd2. First of all, a little history. HTC's slogan is "quietly brilliant." a slogan that stood true to its name until recent times with devices such as the g1 with its chin that temporarily set a standard for android devices to the PPC 6xxx series which were still perhaps the best phones built for gaming aside from the cliq and its epic d-pad that should be on every phone with a slide out keyboard, all the way on to the hd2 which was an amazing device that could do so much. Its pretty much still a standard by which modders will always compare to other phones. It had a nice 4.3 inch display, nice build quality, a great processor for its time, and while it ran an OS that most had abandoned at that point I was more than happy to be able to play warspear again and emulate some Tekken 3 (before android had its ps1 emulators.) it was great, the problem is I think HTC has over-estimated just how great the device was as now they see fit to release that same exact device over and over with minute tweaks to the hardware and a new OS slapped on. Unless you consider the htc surround and its easy to bend kickstand with shoddy speakers or the g2s broken z hinge innovative then these days you're SOL with HTC. Its the same 4.x inches on a device with way too small a battery often given a power hungry OS to leave less fulfillment and a slightly better processor with each iteration. I'm not saying that HTC is the only company doing this but they used to be the big innovators. I just want to see some thought put into the cellphone market again because there's only so many times you can shove a new motor into the same old car and pass it off as something spectacular.

I do apologize for my wall o' text, I am typing from a mobile device and while I do what I can to save face grammatically it's not imperative that I treat it like a thesis paper. I am however fully aware of how these devices work as well as the OSes themselves. I just miss the innovation that HTC once put into their devices.

3d cameras were innovative... Yeah, then the 80s happened. Sure putting them on a phone is innovative enough but like most of what's come out recently it feels gimmicky at best. There's no call for petty insults, if you're looking for a forum for that sort of thing I might suggest 4chan.
I just bought the HTC Infuse and yes there are some things i could complain about such as the battery location, or speaker quality, but overall it is a great phone. This is my first HTC and i feel that they have some great features, especially some of the sense ones.

I'm certainly not stating that they'ree not quality devices. I'm often not find of the battery life of them but aside from that they're typically quite nice. I just feel that they lack the level of innovation that they had in the past.
If you haven't noticed already...not single person agrees with you. And my comments weren't insults... their facts. You are complaining like a little girl and using xda as a personal diary...apparently I'm not the only person who thinks so...

HTC started innovating when they gave up on the windows platform and started making android flagships IMO

I think you mean HTC Inspire
The Infuse is made by Samsung but somewhat similar.
All 1 of their android flagships that was just a souped up mytouch 3g with a bigger screen and better processor... Yeah, no thanks. Hardware-wise HTC was more innovative in their winmo offerings as painful as it is to realize.

HTC has a bright future ahead of them, they have also launched Htcdev.com now, giving us access to source code and their OpenSense SDK and able to unlock bootloaders.

I know they are, doesn't change the fact that their hardware lacks the innovation that made them the mobile giants they are.

Seems Like he means. That HD2 was the best phone at that time when it was releaed. It has no enemies. It was killer of all phones..
On latest HTC´s is most problem the Qualcomm Chipset. Mainly their GPU.. Evo 3D is great innovation due 3D Cameras and display. This one is very good.
I know what should help HTC on their innovations.
1. Changing Platform. Sorry Qualcomm.. I am using old MSM7201A.. (Yeah its slow.. But at the time it was great And crappy Intel Xscale 624MHz. Even using overclocked GPU at my kernel is really great.. Its better than locked Adreno 200 and above GPu´s)..
2. Getting proper GPU drivers (nice shiny and fast)
3. Unlocked Bootloader by default. (Not that web thing. That will void your warranty)
4. Sense as open source.. Not Sense SDK.. That will help devs to make Apps look like sense interface.
5. Creating Better Battery Life. WinMo devices hitted 2days +
6. Better quality/louder speaker .
And a lot more.. Just need to think
It is my understanding that blue tooth audio (playing music through bluetooth say to a car bluetooth speaker system for example) does not work on CM7 builds. I therefore have some questions:
1. Is this also true for ANY cm7 based rom?
2. Are there plans to support a2dp?
3. Are there any custom roms that support the sixaxis bluetooth app besides cm7 on the g2x? (my main reason for sticking with cm7)
Sorry if my questions have been answered elsewhere, I have really tried to search and haven't found the information I was looking for.
2.3.3 supports it, 2.3.5 does not, correct me if im wrong. This is due to nvidia not releasing some code. And if they dont release then a2dp will never work properly on custom roms after 2.3.3

I think it's important for these companies to see any impact on consumers not purchasing their products. It hurts them more than you'd think. It just isn't apparently immediately. I agree though, I'm on the boycot Nvidea too.

Exactly bro. its like they will go bankrupt by releasing a couple of files, we already bought the phone and you are definitely not going to support it so why not release the files needed to keep development growing and you can attract more customers that way.

NVidia has never been open source friendly (just ask anyone running Linux with an NVidia card). I thought maybe they were going to go down a better path when they started doing the Tegra chips for Android but I was wrong. Will stick to ATI from now on like I have for years.
Not sure what chipset on a phone I would switch to but I guess there's not a lot of competition in that area..
Thank you everyone for the replies. So I'm guessing that the answer to my first two questions is: yes then no? Can anyone that has tried using sixaxis with g2x answer for me if it works on any other rom other than cm7 based?
Also, probably a stupid question, but also at the risk of sounding facetious: has anyone tried just calling nvidia and asking them to release the necessary code? I don't mean contacting a low level support person that has no power. I mean looking up the contact info for one of nvidia's high level execs. I imagine that they could be reasonable, and if asked nicely, and maybe even if provided with a petition to release the code, they would do so. And in the process make cm7 even better, and attract more customers.
With so few companies in competition in both mobile SoC and performance video cards, I would imagine releasing any kind of driver would open up analysis by competing companies. And having owned both nvidia and ati graphics cards, I prefer nvidia's drivers.
Maybe I'm wrong but I see it as protecting their assets. Good luck. I would like to see this working on AOSP.

Im looking into picking a new phone, but like most of us I have a hard time deciding whats better to get after having the phone I thought was the greatest. So I Want to see what phone to get next, or what devices to consider, as well see what features to look for next, I was just happy when the Droid inc (1GHz processing power, 8MP Cam, and 512 MBs RAM) was announced and I still am when I look at and think about it. SO my question to the entire Community, What is the best phone, OS, ROM, Features, and why?
Phone EX: Nexus one, HTC EVO, HTC Touch Pro, LG Quantum
Custom built EX: HTC HD2 Running Windows phone 7,
Motorola Droid Running (Custom ROM or Stock)
or even a concept phone; 10MP Cam, Android 2.2, dual core, qwerty keyboard, etc.
Current:
PhoneInc, ROM:Incredible RMX 2
Tablet:Asus Transformer, ROM:Revolver
the only 2 phones worth considering are:
SGS2
Nexus 3
or wait another months for the next best phones to come out, but by then you can wait another 3 months, and then even better phones are around the corner

As much as I dislike HTC, the HTC titan is in a league of it's own as far as phones go. With processing power, it's not the absolute best. The thing is though, that only matters on an OS like android where it will only run remotely decent even with a top-end processor. Aside from that it sports a massive screen, ffc for video chat, solid body, up to 32 gigs internal, and most importantly windows phone 7. I'm sorry, but I don't buy high-end hardware to put an OS on it that was and is intended for crap hardware. My OS needs to keep up with me. Can I customize my phone to the point that it is unstable, slow, but reflects me? No. I can add numerous tiles with all kinds of pictures on a dynamic UI which totally beats a background image for me. Android is great if customization is your ONLY concern, for quality, speed, social integration, gaming,business, media, and pretty much anything else you'd be ripping yourself off if you went any way but the windows phone 7 way.

Whats the MIUI phone? the phone I used to want (though probably outdated now) was called the first else phone, and it was only sold in the middle east, but everyone seems to be on samsung now, I just cant be excited about that, esp since everything I would buy from them usually looks alot better than it preforms. The two phones that top my list now thou would be the Sensation XE, and the Rhyme(almost to the point where the color doesn't even matter)
But I have heard alot of good about the nexus prime. I just feel like if I actually knew how how to program it would be of that much more use to me.

Stay away from WM7 on an HD2 if you want the card slot to survive. It will kill the card slot. Mine, I can run WM7, but if I try to flash Android or other ROMs, the card slot won't work. WM7 runs from the card in the slot excessively and wears it out. WM7 just isn't worth it.
Imho I have used the Samsung epic and also the EVO 4g (not the 3d) and have noticed that the EVO is by far the best one out of the two... Also the most customizable in the sense if being able to switch from sense 3.0 to 3.5 and to asop...

well the only exception to your analogy is the sgs 2 or a totally stock/cyano/miui rom, according to my experience from my hd2 and captivate days. If it's sense, you can expect it to lagg, even when you have nothing on your homescreen.
That aside, I have to agree, WP7 is a great piece of work. Micro created a smooth, simple UI/OS that competes with apple in all those terms and maybe even better in some aspects. What Micro is "copying" from Apple is making phones that run on the "same specs". And the advantage to that is any app placed on the market will be able to run on all WP7 phones, unlike some android apps, which will work on a certain phone but not another.
What i don't like however is that really, all of them look the same (UI/appearance). It makes me feel like i don't have anything special. Which is the same with an iPhone(a stock one atleast). Atleast with android I can customize my status/notificaton bar, change my launcher layout/appearance, change certain effects e.g. overscroll glow to bouncy, change my lockscreen, change my icons, change my settings/menu appearance, which overall means i can have a phone that's different than the next or atleast appears different. (note also the lagg that you state coming from all this customization was atleast non apparent to me in my hd2 days, and for me now in my sgs 2)
Now I may be wrong about WP7 as i haven't even checked on the hacks/customization available since my HD2 days running WP7.

Is it plausible for an average consumer to purchase all the necessary components and build an Android smartphone/tablet?
Quite a number of people build their own computer rigs now, and I was curious to know if the same could be done with phones.
Might be a silly question, but if anyone's done it I would love to hear about it :laugh:
TI processors are sold in sets of 10,000 last time I checked so in terms getting hardware it may be difficult to say the least.
I would love to do this myself but it just seems so expensive to get the hardware, I wish dell would do with phones what they did to computers.
Imagine if you could pick your cpu, ram, radio etc then choose your case.
Alas I wait for said company

You can if you want. You will need to buy the specific hardware from the vendor and have very good electronic knowledge.
Then you can compile an Android rom for the specific hardware.
But my only doubt is whether the hardware company from which you buy the hardware will provide all necessary drivers and codecs(which are mostly closed source)
In short, it is possible but it is not worth the effort!

parts of the device which will come from different country, assembling and developing rom for device will cost you more than actual device available in market plus your time wasted in waiting for parts, assembling/developing rom then testing your device on both hardware and software level
its better to buy device rather than doing all this..
Computer can be assembled easily because All the component required to build computer are easily available in our local market
For something sort of comparable, check out The Tricorder Project for an excellent example. Create your own Star Trek "tricorder" with various sensors and a touchscreen that runs on Linux for around $200 and some work putting it together.

Sadly your LG optimus has everything hardcoded and finalized in design of hardware. Thus means what you wish is not possible or rather not worth it. Sad, everyone is waiting for the day we can build our own gadgets..

What really sucks is not being able to have everything in one ROM. I'm not saying it's the devs fault, but it just sucks. If I want a full working phone I have to dual boot and I just don't want to have to have my messages on a different ROM. If someone calls you and you don't know they did how are you to respond?
And on the other end using a Jellybean/ICS ROM which I currently am, you can't record or use HWA, and it's buggy. If you want full functionality, you have to use Gingerbread which sucks because it is very outdated and 1/3 of my apps won't even be able to be installed on my phone if I use it. Not only that but the rest won't have a much functionality.

It really sucks having a G2x.. it had great potential and was just abandoned.. LG should legit give refunds to everyone who bought them because people with the G2x are sacrificing functionality or using the best Android version. Anyone else agree? (I know it would never happen, but still.. I have to use this phone for another 7+ months before I get an upgrade in which I'll grab the iPhone 5S and stop with the fragmentation)

Just get a Nexus. We all wish LG had done somethings differently, (Release the ICS update for the P999), but we can't do anything now. I wouldn't ever by another phone made and supported by LG, however if it is a Nexus and has software updates issues by Google themselves, then I would. This Nexus 4 is amazing and is one of, if not, the best phone you can buy currently for it's price.
Android phones were designed for people who love tweeking, if you want a phone you never have to modify or have to worry about updates or fixes, get an iphone, its very noob friendly, even my mom can use her iphone with great success.

The problem is when manufacturer's pack in a whole bunch of completely proprietary hardware into a phone, then they stop developing for it and releasing drivers. Couple that with jerkwad carriers that force locked bootloaders and other restrictions, and it makes the whole situation stink. I have an LG Spectrum 2, it is a very, very good phone. But I'll be stuck on ICS until the end of time because the carrier, and the manufacturer, have no consideration for support after the sale.
These devices are computers that can make phone calls, I've yet to see an actual computer whose software couldn't be modified or replaced.
At least Apple allows every device to upgrade to the latest version (within reason).

Apples are built with an entirely different philosophy, when you buy their product you are cradled with software and design support at the expense of having no freedom with the device whatsoever. Android, and essentially linux which is its base, whole purpose in life is customization, especially on the user end, hence why open source support is so huge for android phones. You are right though, jerkwad carriers and proprietary hardware take alot of the fun out of all of it for the expense of profits, thats why I love the fact that google came out with the nexus line of unlocked phones, its basically a jab at all the carriers and their proprietary phones and software saying, we can do whatever we want, because its our right to, we designed it.

At this point it seems like android was made for people that will pay top dollar for unfinished products.
Excuse me and other sensible people for wanting a fully working device. My iPhone 2g and 3g both worked and I could still modify them quite a bit. Even my sister's galaxy nexus had big mms problems that Google never fixed.

LG is terrible....
I too swore never to buy another LG device and silly me I got a Nexus 4....
I still cling onto my G2X and use it as media device. I have DROID TV and have like over 20gigs of shows I need to watch and finish. Also I connect my phone to my TV and watch it there. Don't use it much as a phone. Mainly because whenever I watch my shows it would interrupt and got very annoying.
I still love my G2X. Right size, great screen, never needed screen protector. Battery is terrible and Nexus 4 is just as bad, I mean could be better but isn't.
But who's to blame. Honestly, if CM10.1 gets calling ability and work I'll come right back to this device. Main reason I don't sell it or dump the phone is because I paid full retail price for it and still refuse to accept the loss. Because thats what this phone has been. A loss. I mean seriously.

Nexus 4 really that bad? Unlocked and off contract for $350 is a steal in my opinion. That's only $100 more than a used galaxy Nexus.

Eh, I decided to get the new One from HTC. It just had too much promotion to not get it. I love the G2x, great build quality for sure. I was able to get the One for $99 by switching to Sprint, and I decided to go ahead and send in the ol' G2x to (hopefully) receive the $100 gift card. So, essentially I payed next to nothing for the phone itself, but I will have to eat the cost of cancelling my T-mo account a few months early, but I'll also be able to get a discount on the plan because of corporate discount through work. It was just too enticing not to go for it. I know it's not a Nexus, but I am positive the hardware will be more than capable enough to run several more Android versions in the future. I believe the G2x just won't be able to handle much more than jelly bean. I think it's mostly the lack of ram, but I'm going to remain subscribed to this forum and check back on occasion. If it goes past jelly bean, I won't be surprised if those future versions will be running barebones/ultra slimmed down versions. I also have an old school G1 still, but bricked it trying to get the system to see SD card as usable ram to upgrade. Still wish I could get that thing to work...

Everyone that I know that has the nexus absolutely loves it, i havent heard a single bad thing about it.

I might be picking up a Galaxy Nexus dirt cheap to tide me over till my upgrade.
Although, I really don't have anu bad blood with my G2x.
First smart phone, does everything I need it to do, and I've only ran into a couple games that won't run on my G2x due to being pre-4.0.x OS, and I just play them on my tablet running BakedBean 4.1.2. Still a good phone for me after 15 months. Solid build, I don't care too much it doesn't have ICS/JB, with 512MB total, and after carveout for GPU, sitting at <400MB, the experience of ICS/JB on this device isn't going to be anything stellar over GB as GB didn't have as large as memory usage requirements as ICS/JB.
Just saying, does it really, really matter that much guys?

Yeah, I agree with the most of the people here regarding software updates between iOS and Android and I honestly LOVE android, but the software updates are slow.. if Google could fix up the fragmentation, they would be closer to #1 on my list. The only other complaint is apps in the Google Play but that's not really a big issue. I'm glad at least I wasn't the only one who was having problem with my G2x.

I have only been introduced to the world of android rooting and Modding for the last month. This is my first smart phone. I got bored of it and found this website. Read about the advantages to rooting and flashing roms for a few weeks and finally did it. I'm more than satisfied with how my device is performing compared to stock. It's faster, better looking, and just plain more fun to use. I would love to see a fully working ics rom though. I love the interface and crisp feel.

Blaming LG is only partially right. It's primarily from being on a crap AWS carrier like t-mo, wind, etc. The p990 got it's update, no reason p999 wouldn't with just a few tweaks except they didn't even care that much. Anyways, blame is on the carrier. Keep in mind buying your next phone.
