[Q] Odin or Kies? - General Questions and Answers

Hello. Suppose I have a brand new Samsung Galaxy Ace running stock ROM Android 2.3.4 and want to upgrade to 2.3.5 or later version.
1. Is it safer to use KIES or Odin?
2. OTA means over the air, correct?
3. Is using KIES considered an "OTA update"?
4. If there IS a 2.3.5 or later for Galaxy Ace, is it OFFICIAL? Is it stable?
5. In this link, http://www.sammobile.com/firmware/?page=3&t=1&o=1&m=GT-S5830&r=2#regiona
It's for Singapore (Singtel), can I use that even if I don't live in Singapore?

They are both "safe". Overall though, ODIN is preferred. See here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1248346.

Do NOT use it (Do not ever use a rom for a different country/carrier you are not in/on - Unless you know exactly what you are doing and why you are doing it).

ODIN is better, but there is the possibilty to brick the phone if something doesn't work. But updating with ODIN make you lose the warranty of the phone.

Thanks guys. How do I know if there's already a firmware update for my country? Do I always have to look in sammobile.com? Or do I just plug my phone in my laptop and open Kies and it would automatically detect if there's a firmware update available?
Thanks!

Kies should notify you of an update, but you could still check manually. You could also see here: http://droidangel.blogspot.com/2011/05/samsung-galaxy-ace-s5830-original-stock.html.

What OS are you running on computer? Check Device Manager. Installed Samsung USB drivers? Connecting directly to computer and not via a hub? Try a different USB cord. Some just won't work.

It's the one provided with the device. It used to work. It still does, as Windows recognizes the tab as an MTP device.
I've now left it a long, LONG time trying to connect. After several minutes I got a pop-up window with: "This device is not supported by Kies 2.0. Make sure that your device is supported and try again"
What the....!?!?!?

If you've installed a ROM from a different country, a custom ROM, or rooted your device, KIES will not recognize it. Actually, it is possible that KIES won't recognize the device if the binary counter is above zero (or, if you've ever installed anything through Odin).

I did install the Austrian P6800XXLQ2 P6800OXALQ2 firmware with Odin and have also rooted the device.
Rooting must not be the cause, since Kies connected fine with stock HC and the device already rooted.
What's the "binary counter"?
Is there any way around this? I would like to have Kies centralizing my contacts and backups.

Well, I downloaded a zip file named "P6800XXLQ2_P6800OXALQ2_ATO". It uncompressed into "P6800OXALQ2_P6800XXLQ2_HOME.tar" and "SS_DL.dll".
I installed using Odin. I can only believe the CSC is the ATO one.
How do I check this?

Binary Counter is Samsung's internal method of tracking how many times a ROM (or other alteration I believe) was made to the device. Some say a method of tracking for warranty purposes. Chainfire has an app (TriangleAway) that resets the binary counter on Google Play but unsure if it is supported for the 7.7. Have it on my 10.1 Note.

Please, tell me how to change the CSC?!
I've been trying it for a long time without success... I flashed the ATO ROM (P6800XXLQ2) to my Hong Kong vendor code device. But this ROM doesn't contain special CSC folder, so, I couldn't change it with the dedicated CSC Change app. I even thought that I should go back to honeycomb and change the code on that ROM but I didn't find a proper ATO ROM among the HC ones on Samfirmware. So, what to do?

Thought: I love Android because of the versatility and the superior support given by a knowledgeable, generous community of developers.
...but I am starting to wonder if the efficiency of those developers coupled with the said versatility isn't resulting in such a gargantuan number of combinations that they are actually killing any chance of effective support, as our own incarnation of Android is always slightly but irremediably different from the next one.

Hi bud, don't you think you were asking for a solution as Kies was unable to detect your device after updating to the latest firmware ?

No.
I asked for help regarding Kies not being able to recognize my 7.7 on another thread on the same subject...funnily enough, one where the OP specifically asked for a solution and that was (...and still is...) filled under "Galaxy Tab 7.7 General" without being subject to this aggressive moderating zeal...go figure...
This thread of mine merely stated the fact (not question) that it still does not connect under the newest Kies incarnation.
Although generous posters advanced with possible solutions, that was not the intent.
The reason I prefer international forums to Portuguese ones is because my countrymen have a tendency to turn into little arrogant dictators when the slightest modicum of power is entrusted to them (...especially under the cover of anonymity...)
Please don't fall into the same trap.

ICS update in Singapore.

My question may sound foolish but here it is.
I have Galaxy R with me on stock 2.3.4. Never rooted or installed any sort of ROMs.
If I carry this phone to Singapore and try to update OTA, will I be able to update to ICS as I see ICS Stock ROM for Singapore already released.

I am from India. I may go to Singapore next month. Here in india OTA won't show any new update as it has never gone past 2.3.4
But in Singapore, I think the update for ICS has been released. So I had a doubt if I go there, and just search for update OTA, will I be able to see ICS and be able to update to ICS??

yes just check it with kies ....
Also, our phone does not get updates with respect to our geographical location.. If you purchased your phone in India, you will have an indian rom by default and kies will search for an update to that rom.. So even if you take your phone to hong Kong or Taiwan it will not update if ics for India is not available...
Since ics is out for india, you can go ahead and update with kies as suggested by mj.vikram buddy

New firmware found.
Firstly I was shocked to see this new firmware on kies. All these days I was checking on Kies(Mac version) and didn't find any update.
(I am on GB 2.3.5. Never did any customizations on my phone, no rooting, no infected ROM. Nothing. It is as same as it was when I took it)
Now, I find this firmware update on KIES (Windows version) and wanna know if I can go ahead and update this firmware?? Is there any side effect of doing this?
Some one says you cannot factory reset after this firmware. Someone says, nothing would happen.
I am confused. Please help.
P.S: I am newbie and have no clue about CWM or eMMC brick or kernal

Or, you still have your warranty,so why don't you ask in service center to upgrade your firmware.

On the web site are official ROMs.
http://www.sammobile.com/firmware/
In Search type s5670 and you'll get Firmware for install. Install Firmware for your region. After install it via ODIN,
connect your phone with PC, open KIES and you'll get notification about Firmware that you have installed.
I do not think they should more receive such a notice, but notification that is your last firmware official.

you could try using a different language. but i dont know if it can damage your tablet.
Sock roms are interchangeable through regions. That's how most people got JB when it wa first released for Germany only....
Just be aware however that flashing a stock rom will change your CSC (region code), you will need to change back with the CSC Changer app available in app store HOWEVER, make sure to backup the contents on your Internal memory first or you will loose it.
