Hi all,
I'm trying to repair an optimus one with water damage. The phone won't switch on, but does come up with the LG logo followed by the battery charging screen when I plug it in, and is recognized as an LG android usb device when I connect it to my computer. I can't get into recovery using the home+vol down+power combination. Any ideas what to try next, or is it a write-off? (All ideas are welcome, no matter how crazy, since it's basically useless now anyway )
Thanks for you time,
Tom
u can try keeping the phone under the rice or in sunlight for 2 days
I recomend the rice, but not the direct sunlight for 2 days.
Sorry, I was unclear. The water damage happened a long time ago, about a month, and it's been working somewhat since. It's gradually got more difficult to turn on (removing battery, sim card etc...) until now it finally won't. I mainly wanted to know if there's any other way to get into it via adb or something, to get some more diagnostics.
Thanks
Tom
Don't switch on your phone untill its properly dried... (electronic devices get damaged by water only because of short circuiting in internal parts)
so remove the battery, back cover, sim, sd card etc... and put it in rice for atleast one day...
now try to flash recovery via adb, wipe everything and reinstall rom...
if it doesn't work go to Service Centre...

If you're cellphone is out of warranty, you should open it (carefully, only if you know what you're doing & using the service manual) and spray some contact cleaner (like WD40, one specific for electronic should be better) on the motherboard. It should be useful to avoid micro shortcuts. After, you can try to use the tutorial for restoring a bricked phone.
I've saved many of old phones by doing this (including an Iphone & a GT540 having similar troubles).

Same, removing battery & accessories and to put the cell phone on rice for two days minimum in a box on a warm (but not hot!) place. Direct sunlight is not good IMO.
Also, eating the rice after is not recommended

Thanks killdashnine, I never thought of WD40 but it's worth a shot. Like I said, I don't have a lot of hope left, but anything is worth a try!
Okay, I'm answering to a topic ... and I did worst ...
1- My O1 has been dropped in water few times (usually, 2cm of water while showering), I had sometimes some screen bugs (like white screen + color dots), but nothing more. Since 1year and half (even more in fact), I never have protected it from rain or water.
2- Last weekend, I slept in one Hammack (hammac) with a blanket and I woke up totally wet because of the rain (okay, I was drunk, and I tried to sleep under the shower) and I forgot to dry up my phone...
3- Finally, while waking up lately to go to work ... I dropped my O1 in my mug full of Ginger tea (don't make silly jokes for ginger bread) without noticing it. (I wasn't drunk). Sick ...
My phone has totally crashed, water was leaking from everywhere and the LCD has water between the slides.
I've left him drying for 3 days with rice, plus 1 day on a computer's fan. My O1 was crashing at the white LG logo. After some WD40 on the battery connector + USB, the phone was doing bootloops.
I succeed to flash it with KDZ and the Indian V20C, but Android was starting on "Safe mode" and physicals keys were buggy + high battery drain.
This morning, I finally decided to open my O1, and I fount out that even with several days of drying with a very warm and dry weather + rice + fan wasn't sufficient because there were still some water inside. There are good photo tutorials on google to disassemble your Optimus without a lot of risks
So, I've cleaned the water, put some paper on the physical keys contact and left some WD40 + cleaning with a soft dry cotton. After 5 hours under a dry aircon with all the parts totally disassembled (motherboard, digitiser, lcd ...) , the O1 was working well.
There is still some water on the LCD, I haven't tried to "pill it up". Maybe I'll give a try if there is still the silly watermark on the screen.
So, If you have water on your LG Optimus one, remove the battery and left it for a long time with a dry air and rice like 7 days or more!
If you can't, completely disassemble it, and dry it manually and left all parts drying for at least few hours with ideal conditions.
I'm stupid and I can't fix it, but my O1 has (again) survived. So, be patient before trying to start it up if you're having water in your O1.
If you want, I've some pics (water in screen, disassembled O1 drying ...)

Hello,
by a rediculous accident I forgot my HTC Diamond in the pocket of my jeans when running the laundry :-(
Afterwards, I opened the cover, took out the battery and let the phone dry out for 2 days. Now I've put it back together, and connected it to the charger. The "ring" is flashing, so the battery is charging but the phone itself is not starting and the display remains completely black, not even the vibration kick on starting...
Is there anything I could do? Or perhaps there is a chance to get out some photos I have shot earlier, would also be something...
ive heard that taking apart your phone and leaving the parts in rice can help (because the rice absorbs moisture)
Off topic:
I read one Desire went through a washing sequence in a washing machine in Desire spesific forum and now this?
Is this a new hobby? I mean... washing smartphone

If the photos are on your micro sd card, you may be able to plug that into an adapter and plug it into your PC and gain access to them that way. Just be sure that micro sd card is thoroughly dry before doing so.
WORKING !!!
Hello,
thanks for the replies... This morning the phone booted!!! I was able to download the photos!!! But the screen has stains, obviously the remaining water.
PLEASE advise on how to dry that thing completely !!!
I think that I'm gonna pass on the rice thing.
@aaa - YOU ARE A JUNKA$$ !!! You think that's really funny?!? Especially when I'm currently TIGHT on budget and need the money for other things and the next phone is planned no earlier than Christmas... I'm hesitating whether you're a real human being...
You can dry it completely in an oven for three hours at thirty degrees or so. I've done this three times. If you have a fan forced oven, just turn the fans on, that'll be enough.
A safer way (if you can obtain it) is to leave the phone for 24 hours in a bowl of dessicant silica gel. You'll often get a small packet of silica gel when buying new electronics or other moisture-affected things. That small packet is enough, just put it in an airtight bag and leave it for 24 hours.
The next step would be disassembly and a thorough swabbing with denatured alcohol, but that's pretty extreme and only needed when the device isn't booting.
Some LCDs are hard to get moisture out of, some are not. Leaving the phone with the silica gel for longer will have a better effect. As the previous poster mentioned, rice also works (quite well), but takes longer than silica.
Good luck with it!
Another thin that will absorb moisture is common table salt. Take the phone apart very carefully. Remove battery first, make sure you're grounded as well.
Hello everybody.
thanks a lot for the numerous advices...
Unfortunately, I have more to report...
The phone dried out and booted 2 or 3 days later, as I said. The stains on the display disappeared as by magic one day later.
Everything was fine for a week until I launched the camera 2 days ago. The backlight of the display went off and came back only after removing the batter for 15 minutes.
Now the backlight is going off pretty often, sometimes it requires to remove the battery 1-2 times before it starts working again and yesterday it happened that it got activated again when I got a call...
Any ideas please?
And also the phone keeps overheating from time to time without real load (GPS or wi-fi) which dries out the battery. But I had this problem also before the laundry
Sounds like that moisture in the LCD unit left a bit of residue and is shorting the backlight somewhere.
Only option there would be to disassemble and swab the LCD boards and cables/connectors with denatured alcohol.
Alternatively, a new LCD unit should fix the problem if it persists, just make sure you alcohol swab the connectors before plugging them back in
Someone also mentioned drying out in salt before. While that does work, salt is extremely corrosive on solder and SMCs, so I wouldn't recommend that route.
i heard hair dryers are the bomb at the screen moisture, just take off all that you can and blow dry it.
I just don't understand your refusal on using white rice. It have saved countless phones.
Uncooked white rice is VERY mosture negative. Just put layer of rice, put your phone on it, cover it completely with white rice, seal it in. Ziploc could work too.
In a day or two your partially dry phone will be bone-dry. If it was soaked still you could first try to shake out water as much as can, soak it in distilled water to remove minerals, then white rice it for 3 to 5 days.
I had this problem with my Touch Diamond. Everything worked, but while i was trying to dry it I broke one of the battery "hinges" but the phone still worked after except only with black screen. The best thing to do probably is just leave it for a couple of days and hopefully your phone will be back!

exactly what ive said. ive read everywhere that rice is one of the best solutions out there
Like was said before you most likely have some corrosion on a few contacts, if you have about 6 bucks you can spare you can get residue free contact cleaner in an aerosol at radio shack or any electronics store and save yourself having to scrub each contact and connector. Just tear the phone down down spray all the contacts and connectors with contact cleaner let it sit for a few then spray it down with air duster to get any thats get under the resistors, in the connectors, etc that hasn't dried; let it sit till you're positive everythings dry and put it back together. Does the same thing as alcohol just alot less scrubbing.

Hello,
thanks for narrowing the problem down.
But for me it looks like something different, because:
1) I have been using the phone for 1 week without any problems and it got screwed after I've launched the camera app for the first time
2) The backlight works when I power on the phone. But its stop is event-triggered, like when I launch the sound or video player or when I get a call... Similar events would trigger the backlight back on.
Perhaps reflashing the software could fix that?
I went to a shop today and put another battery. The phone booted, anyway without any backlight, twice...
At least the device is still alive.
There probably was a tiny water bubble and it messed with phone when you turned camera on.

Either that or a short in the cameras circuit from corrosion, either way i'd pull it apart before it gets worse and check it out.

Hello Guys
A while ago i received my N5 and i really enjoyed it! 2 days, i drop the thing in the toilet. :crying:
Okay so my insurance wont cover it and the phone has dryed in Rice and i followed all the advices that were online.
Tho i couldnt remove the batteri and i know this is a crucial point since the current+water will destroy the circuits.
Now my phone either wont start, or sometimes it will try to boot showing the google logo and then crashing (it cant enter the OS).
Is it worth trying to repair the thing? I dont think it will be a problem for me to change a circuit board og replace another part, but since i dont have any experience with phones i dont know what part i should start with.
The phone costs 580 dollars here in Denmark where i live.
Is it worth it ?
Regards Jesper
You can open it up, get some rubbing alcohol and submerge the board into the rubbing alcohol. Use a soft tooth brush and scrub the board. Usually the board gets corrosion/dirt from the water. Once thoroughly clean put a blow dryer to it (use medium to no heat. DO NOT PUT THE BATTERY IN THE ALCOHOL. ONLY THE BOARD!
I've tried this before and it worked like a charm when my Galaxy Nexus had water damage.

As soon as you dropped it in water you should have turned it off and left it off for days and possibly even took a hairdryer to it or let it sit in front of the heat vent.
Number one mistake is trying to turn it on. If anybody else drops the nexus in water. Because it has no removable battery cover. Rice won't do the trick. It would take way too long and the water would have already rusted the metal components and trashed all the pop connectors. If you drop the phone is water. Quickly take the entire phone apart. Than put all the pieces in rice. That will allow the rice to actually absorb the left over water. YouTube "nexus 5 tear down". Its always a good thing to know how to do this.

I just finished assembling the Nexus again and im a very happy man!
After disasembling the phone i found that the top board was very teared by the water and it was clear how some of the sockets had poor or no connection.
I used pure alchol (Dunno what its called in english) and a small toothbrush to clean the board. I dryed the board with a hair dryer on cold setting to avoid over heating the CPU parts. Now the phone works! and it doesnt look like it has any pearment faults or flaws. Even the display is normal and all my previous settings and the OS was intact. Thanks for the help everybody! and yes the best thing to do is remove the powersource and dry the boards individually if exposed to water

Hey guys. I followed the instructions and have gotten my phone to power. Problem is when it goes from the power up screen that say "Google" to the colored balls, the balls freeze and it goes back to "Google" and freezing there. Any ideas on what I can do to get it to boot?
I just need it to boot long enough to retrieve my pictures and this hot chick's number I got right before the phone was dropped in the pool. Thanks.
edit: When I hold Volume Down/Power, I can get it to the bootloader. Anything I can do from here to salvage my stuff? I'm not familiar with bootloader options. Plugged into my computer, I can hear my PC make the noise as though it's connected which typically then leads to the phone's drive being accessible on the computer however it then immediately makes the noise of the phone being disconnected.
I believe I am having the same problem as you. I briefly dropped it into a creek for no more than a few seconds. That was enough to make the display unresponsive to touch. I was able to power down and quickly did so.
Unfortunately I wasn't near any rice immediately (motorcycle) so I put the phone in my mesh jacket in 100F weather and hoped for the best. I left it off at this point. When I got home I turned it back on (stupid I know) and the N5 didn't boot, only stopped at "Google" boot. I powered down the phone and rebooted, this time it worked. A quick checkup showed the external speaker didn't work for Play music, but did work for T-mobile visual voicemail. Also, the earpiece didn't work when I attempted to make calls.
At this point I realize I probably screwed up the phone big time. Once I realized not all components were working I put the phone in a ziplock bag with brown rice new from the store. I guess I'll let it sit for 48 hours and then attempt again. If it doesn't work, I'll attempt taking the phone apart and cleaning each part. And I'm really only going to attempt that because this phone isn't even paid off!!
These phones need to be made tougher! I am losing hope that there's any chance of my phone surviving at this point.

Hi guyz,
I need some help, lately my nexus 5 was been water damaged. I immediately follow OuncE718 suggestion but I still experiencing problem. When I press on the phone I can feel the vibration but Google-boot logo will not display and it will only display a white-dim light in the bottom part of the screen. I tried to connect it in a Windows computer it will be recognised as a Nexus 5 phone. Does it mean I had to replace my LCD.?

Who knows what damage did the water do? If the corrosion sets in, your device will be hosed for sure.
It's really a fools errand to fix water damaged phones as no one can be sure the extent of the damage.
If you take it to a service centre, they'll most probably replace the lcd + mobo which will cost a bomb.

Cut your losses. Replace the whole phone. Then get insurance

Spending money on a water damaged device is usually money wasted. Cause there's usually more things wrecked you find out along the way.
Save the money to go towards a new device.

saturday afternoon the phone dropped into sea water at the beach, it didn´t lasted more than 10 seconds underwater since i pulled it out very fast
as soon as the phone came out of the water it was already restarting, so i tried powering down but not holding the power button but using VOL DOWN + power button until i felt it vibrate once. it did and the screen remained off for like 2 minutes.
then it restarted on its own again but didn´t make it past the bootanimation (first time also didn´t make it) so it remained off and i left it lying in the sun with the plastic cover off...i got home around 6pm and placed it on uncooked rice (uncooked rice soakes up himidity) all day sunday and now monday (more than 36 hrs on rice) i tried connecting the charger and got no response from the device.
i got this same situation with an old xperia SL (not water proof) and managed to revive just like this, lost the speaker but worked just fine.
i was kinda not worried about the moto g since motorola claims its water resistant (NOT WATER PROOF) and it was in water less than 10 seconds! but what worries me is that this time it was SEA water wich means SALT. so maybe its really dead? during sunday and monday morning the notification light was flickering but i did nothing cause i thougt it was better to let the battery die by itself.
but it has been conected for 1 hour and still no response...the wall charger is not even warm.
any thoughts? help?
i had Cyanogen rom installed and bootloader unlocked if thats any help. that also means no warranty but here in venezuela there is no such thing as customer service from phone companies .
Dissasemble it and leave it in rice for at least two days. Unscrew the back and leave it in rice. That should help. You made a mistake by trying to power it on too soon.

yeah the thing is i can´t get my hands on one of those "star" screwdrivers that are used exactly for this....
You mean a torx screwdriver?
If the screws have holes in you need a security torx set.. I'm guessing maybe a size 2 or 3. I don't want to burst your bubble but.. Salt corrodes electronics. Chances are slim your phone will work. I had same issue went swimming down the beach forgot to take mg phone out the pocket.. I remember quick ( about 30 seconds into wading in ) although it was too late and my local repairist wouldn't even touch the thing said it would be a waste of time.

With salt water damage, you need to immediately rinse the device in distilled water, this rinses out the salt water before corrosion can set in. The problem with salt water is the corrosion, and also the fact that when the water dries you leave a layer of salt inside the phone. This layer of salt stuffs with the electrical characteristics and ruins the device even if it's dry.
You could give this a go since there isn't really anything to lose, rinse it in distilled water thoroughly and then dry it for a week using the rice method.
I'd follow the distilled (or deionized) water with high grade (90%+) isopropyl or ethyl alcohol to displace and dry out that water much more quickly. (Got the idea from Adam Outler in a video where he talks about the Moto X.) Maybe finish off with the rice, but I would think some dessicant packets would be even better.

I'd follow the distilled (or deionized) water with high grade (90%+) isopropyl or ethyl alcohol to displace and dry out that water much more quickly. This. Flush thoroughly with deionized water and drop into 99% ethanol to drive out the water. The EtOH will likely negate a long dry or time but caution demands some drying time. Salt water is usually the kiss of death for electronics (especially ones with non-removable batteries). Good luck.
Hastily spouted for your befuddlement
Hello,
Today my OPO got waterlogged for around 15 minutes..and I had been to a water park and had put my fine in a airtight plastic pouch..
I think water had entered through USB port. It was not drenched but little splashes in the corners and on screen. Screen was OK..and I switched off for few hours..and when I turned on, screen was black..notification light was functional..phone booted..but couldn't unlock as I had pattern lock on...
Then, I waited for few hours and after I returned home, I find that the hardware buttons could glow now..but screen is completely black...I could unlock by constantly trying to unlock the pattern lock..succeeded once or twice..
Now I have immersed it in a sack of rice to make sure its 100% dry.
I seriously doubt the LCD has gone bust...is there anything I should be doing now ?
Its my 2nd phone which got bust with water...haven't learnt from my past experience?.

Not sure what you would expect anyone to tell you but the obvious. Its a waiting game? leave it in the sun, leave it in the rice do whatever you think may work. Some stores sell bags to put your phone in if it get wet. I mean its your second time as you say what did you do the first time
1st time my lumia 920 got dropped in the sync accidentally and the phone was completely drenched.. After few hours of drying display went black and never came back.. Got it repaired for around 11k as warranty got voided since it got waterlogged and service folks verified it with some test and few circuitry got fried..
As normal with waterlog devices its a waiting game to see just how much damage was done
Open it and disconnect the battery, then let all parts sit in the rice for a few days. I'm not sure how insurance claims on OPO's are done.

You can find a good OPO teardown on iFixIt

I saw a couple years ago in an specific device forum a tutorial explaining how to fix dead pixels. It isn't your case but the procedure was to remove battery, wrap the phone with plastic. Make sure it's well wrapped, then put it into fridge for 24 hours. Maybe you can try that after you place it on rice for a good time to make sure there isn't any drop of water to avoid it turning into ice.
Thank you folks.. how can i remove battery from OPO.. are there any procedures to do the same?
Thanks i got it from ifixit.. BlackElvis79..
Here is a link to the tear down. https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/OnePlus+One+Teardown/26484
Stop trying to use the phone, every time you power it up you are giving the water a chance to be a conduit for electricity and further shorting it out. If you have a backup phone use that for at least the next three days, if not a week, then try it.
Thanks pal.. but i havent touched my OPO in few months now. I am waiting for my cousin to pay a visit from Hongkong from where he bought in a dealer shop.
I have slim hopes of having this repaired in HK.. as the repair cost is almost the price of this piece of ***. teardown is a good idea.. but how will i get a replacement screen ?
btw, i have got myself a Z3 from my office.. finally a waterproof phone (yes with flaps closed ofcourse) .
So... my n5 was submerged into washing maching for at least 10-15 mins. and I'm using the traditional method, ( dip into rice bucket ) and leave it overnight, for the rice to absorb all the moisture and stuff. :crying:
I've remove the sim tray and cover n5 with rice.
I hope when I wake up later, it'll be able to work.
Is there any method I can restore the phone's files even if it is dead?
For example, using adb to control the phone?
Or better yet, if phone is able to boot, but screen is damaged, can it emulate the *image* to some software and we control from there or something?
Please give me all the possible solutions for getting the phone dry up or restore the files..
Update 1: sorry for not reading the main thread in General, was too furious.
When I wake up, tried to turn on, but fail. Then I went to remove the cover, there's water inside, then remove the screw and battery, there's water inside. After drying up everything, I put to rice again. Now I'm in office, hope my phone will wake up from deep sleep dead sleep later.
But still, any idea to recover the files inside the phone? I hope I don't damage the internal when I tried to turn on just now, how to check if battery or the motherboard is damaged?
Help please :crying:
up, updates.
Shouldn't really bump if it's been less than 24 hours. But, I'd leave it in the rice for two days. Overnight isn't long enough. Good luck!
If it starts up and you are unlocked and have a custom recovery you might be able to save files.

yes, its unlocked and have custom rec and custom ROM installed. I'm just hoping it could boot up or at least show some sign that its still half alive. I really need those files asap. I refuse to use my whatsapp in another phone. And it is my main source of connecting people other than calling.
I would use silica gel over rice

Sorry, but your device is now likely not to boot at all regardless what you try now.
Always , Always , Always open up the phone after a water immersion. Open , disassemble completely , rinse with IPA , then distilled water , then dry with a blow drier . Saved an iphone 3g , a samsung s2 , htc desire and desire x like this. My desire x ( after a 15 min dunk in the river ) still works - and it's been 2 years since then.
Rice doesn't work - at all in my experience. And just leaving the battery in for 24h means you have every chance to kill you phone.
Edit : data recovery will be IMO almost impossible without paying at the very least a few thousand dollars. If the EMMC is fried ad another order of magnitude to the bill.

Don't have and don't know where to get IPA at my country here, will search around later.
how in the world would it takes a few thousand dollars. thats insane!! damn.
Hopefully it'll show me some signal of the phone later when I got back from work. :fingers-crossed: But I have a bad feeling. Lol.
Anyway, thanks for your answer! Will note it down
Most of the time there's no chance of reading the NAND using the phone itself.
That means you need to desolder it ( extremely hard for Nexus 5 since it's epoxied as well , you need to mill the pcb from the back side until you reach the solder blobs ) , prototype a break-out board for it , interface it and read it. No one will give you any warranties for the success of the process.
A brand new NAND without glue , full datasheets and known protocol ? 300$ an hour with a 6 hour minimum.
Water damage + glue ? I never got a quote for that , but it's probably going to be 3000$ an hour - and it will take at least 2 hours just to mill the pcb off. Add another hour to clean it , 3+ hours to proto the board and either make it in-house or have it made at some pcb fab (though they won''t bill you for the waiting time if you are lucky ) , another hour to put the chip in , and countless hours to reverse engineer the protocol and get the data out - probably somewhat corrupted as well.
TLDR : unless you need 64bit variables for your income statement NOT worth it.
If the data stored on the phone is so damn important, why didn't you have a backup of it? Why was the only copy of this data on an easily lost, easily broken, unreliable storage medium in your pocket?
The problem with washing machines is you're not just dealing with water, you have some fairly serious soap too, and this is really what your concern is. Soap is alkaline and corrodes the traces inside the phone. You really need to immediately strip the phone down; rinse the phone thoroughly with distilled water and then dry well for a few days.
You should have just put it in the dryer after its wash

15 minutes , powered on at first in very conductive water ( soap+dirt+hot water) . It's too late for a rinse since I doubt there will be anything working in that phone anymore. Not to mention the mechanical action . If the battery wasn't in it might have survived , albeit with a lot of possible damage.
Ladies and gentleman. My phone survived.
Just plugged back everything, and it boots up. Thank god man. Now I jsut need to back up everything and extract the data out of it. Yay.
My screen has a new 3d effect tho. Water is inside, LOL. It has some nice blue color. Happy me. Woots.
Thank all of you guys for the possible solutions and feedback! Rock on!!

Considering it was in the washing machine, you didn't remove the battery, attempted to turn it on, then water came out when you finally opened it up..
You're lucky it has any sign of life at all.

Yes, I know right!
Took out from w.s, turn it on, screen flashes > dip phone to rice for 8 hours > tried turn it on, nothing happens > remove cover and screws and everything > dry up water > dip to rice for another sweet 15 hours ( working + part time studies ), now reached home, assemble everything, turn it on, and WALLA!
Backing up everything now. :fingers-crossed: :highfive:  :victory:

I am really happy for you Next time though, set up automated backup options so that you don't have to worry about the data inside the phone.

I'm amazed! I suppose it's possible the water was conductive enough to actually put the battery into protection right away

Yea. Nexus the magician! But all in all, speaker doesn't work, 3.5mm jack doesn't work. At least all my data are there!
Take a backup and buy a new phone. Lol.
