Coming from a Vibrant, what new stuff? Doesnt seem much - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

Was just in the store and with my plan, I was due for an upgrade.
So for a 100 i figured another galaxy S would be nice.
First had the 3g only, no forward cam and gps was jacked up.
Whats a good rom? I used to play with the gingerbread stuff but random no incoming calls and what not, I ditched it for zendroid.

Welcome to the SGS 4G,
I had a Vibrant too, but changed it for 4g, never going back .
New stuff? Not so much, but DONT USE ROM MANAGER, its the first rule.
Our development isnt so enourmous as the Vibrant's, but it is still very nice.
We have a BIBLE thread, where you can find everyting you need for the new phone.
We also have an official gingerbread release(its pretty damn good).
So, if you have questions, ask, someone will answer

The wife was using old sidekicks and throw away bberrys from work.
Got her one as well and I'm surprised hers has gingerbread already on it yet mine has froyo.
Vibrant didnt have any legit gingerbread, so this does?
Edit: Ahhhh! No more built in 16gb?
No wonder they hyped the free 8gb card.....

I came from owning a Vibrant also ( still do actually) and after reading all I could find about rooting and flashing custom Roms I started here
GB Ext4 Starter Pack.

Yes, this has official GB 2.3.6. You can use Kies Mini to download it that way, use RaverX3X's ODIN or CWM version of it, or one of the custom versions from the Dev section. Have fun with the new phone

Always after I get something.
Seems ok so far. Colors a bit more "vibrant" but I remember there being some color fixes on the vibrant. the lack of the internal memory really surprised me.
I connected the usb and saw only the one drive pop up and thought there was a problem.
Already did the kies and have the beta3 kernal on and cwm.
Debating which rom to go with. Thinking Valhalla final or black.
Whats the official ways to get into recovery and download modes?
I remember on vibrant when they added the gingerbread loaders volup+ power was one and voldown was the other.
Now it seems like the froyo and I have to hold all 3 w/o usb for recovery and all 3 and usb in for download.

Hold all three to get into recovery.
For download, hold the two volume buttons and plug in the usb.

Damn they went cheap! When the sgs4g first came out it included a 16gb SD card. Got mine in April or May for $110 (was on sale at radio shack for $150 but they messed the price up in my favor).

Exactly what I was thinking.
It came with the 16 onboard and then a 2gb, so 18gb~ total. Now it's here enjoy 8gb.
I already told my wife how I'll put a couple movies, tv shows, etc.
Then I had to tell her ehh just a handful.
Time to start looking into 16gb micros.
after I already bought a couple 8's.
I had an 8 in the vibrant but quite honestly barely used it. the on board usable 13 was fine for me.

As was said before, our dev community is not as big as the vibrant, but we are making progress towards cm7 and 9, new kernels are on the way, and a new bootloader (which is also planned for other 'galaxy s' type phones besides the sgs4g).
The 'Galaxy S 4G' (aka VibrantPlus - SGH-T959V) is technically more like the Epic4G and Facinate, and less like the Vibrant.
There is also another variant of the SGH-T959V is the SGH-T959P, which is the Telus version of the SGH-T959V.

TOUCHE, good move!!
I would never go back
i bought a perfect condition 3GS from a guy that bought the iPhone 4 the day it came out for 150 bucks and couldnt pass up that deal. Was using the Epix before that. The iPhone was a nice upgrade but I have never been an Apple fanboy. So it's newness wore off and I been wanting to go Android for a while but we all know ATT Android selection sucks. I was holding out because i thought they may have something i want by this time. I do want the Infuse, but i see that isnt going to be out till maybe May or June, so when this opportunity came up, i jumped on it. I already got my feet wet by playing with mods on my gf's HTC Hero, so once i get it, I am ready to rock n roll.
on another thought, i have been looking at the Serendipity and Cognition ROM, anybody who has tried them both? any thoughts on which one you like more and why? any input is greatly appreciated.

I have only flashed a rom twice now, and it was Cognition both times, (2.3B6 first time and most recently 3.04) I can tell you that Cog 3.04 is amazing! Its based on the Official Froyo release from Rogers (canadian carrier) but has been "americanized" and it's quite fast and very smooth. In case you haven't seen these, I followed the 3 part video tutorials for flashing your rom, from user "connexion2005". He is very detailed and really takes the time to walk you through the process. The links are,

Good luck, have a blast!
I am running Paragon and it runs great. I tried Cognition, but had to change the font back to stock and didn't like that it was missing Bluetooth voice dialing.
Last week I traded an iPhone 4 for a captivate. I got way tired of playing the little games trying to keep the jailbreak everytime a new update came out. I just did the phoenix ROM and it is pretty good.
Cognition is good if u want to stick with what samsung gave us to use.....all the garbage is remove for performance reasons....I've been using serendipity since it started and its my favorite.....its the closest thing to a stock android rom..... I like the color scheme and the fact that there's hardly any traces of touchwhiz. I alway put together my own custom parts though which is what's great about android...Im using hardcores kernel and the jk3 modem.....changed the battery icon ect....

Cant make up my mind.....

if I should return this phone or not.
I am coming from the old MT3G, so this is a serious upgrade for me, and I am loving every thing about it, except the memory issue for the apps.
I know that the LG Optimus g2X is probably coming out this month on Tmo, and probably could get on that instead.
I am trying to get everyones opinion on this ... just to get the pros and cons of this compared to that of the LGs.
Would appreciate if you guys can give me your input......
EDIT:
Also, is it possible to return it rooted? Do I need to reload all the bloatware I deleted?
I like the phone, but I cannot recommend over the mytouch 4g. I have both.
+ The screen is amazing, and a huge selling point
+ Takes some of the best HD video ive ever experienced on a mobile phone
+ Snappy phone, no real issues as far of everyday use. It truely is a great phone.
+ Data speeds are very good
- The cheezyness of touchwiz UI and the extreme bloatware
- Totally nerfed the memory, combined with bloatware I only had like 400mb of memory available, why samsung?
-/+ no Flash on Camera, sorry. Camera performs well, but video is very good. Actually takes half decent pics in dim lighting. But having the option for flash would help, again..why samsung?
Other little things with the stock rom, like the browser not able to load in desktop mode and the very well hidden mobile hotspot are annoying but im sure will be resolved with custom Roms.
This phone couldve been a home run, but samsung only trades off some luxuries hardwarewise. The shipping software is tragic, but XDA im sure will come to the rescue. So with that...im keeping it.

i've worked a couple of refurb centers for cell phones and you can return a phone to them with a full custom rom on it if you want. they don't care. they just replace hardware and plastics as necessary and EVERY phone gets plugged in and returned to a factory image. with that in mind... don't tell customer support anything over the phone that would prevent them from setting you up for a phone swap. lol
as for the phone's app issue... not really an issue if you have a moderate understanding of android and know how to move apps to external sd. all in all the phone is great... i recommend it. improved sound and video recording over the original Vibrant. i still have my original Vibrant so i compare them off and on. drastic improvements in some areas such as GPS. no change in others.
give it a go... you've got nothing to lose.
Return it and wait for something better.
I literally can't wait to get my replacement Vibrant 3g in the mail, so I can take this thign back.
I actually really hate it, and feel it's been a step backwards.

I definitely want to give this one a try, as said coming from the old MT3G, this is a good upgrade, snappy fast. Yes apps can be handled using the app2sd etc, but if waiting for a few more days or weeks will get me a phone where this is not going to be a tradeoff, then I keep thinking that it might be worth waiting.

Ohh no way am I going for the MT4G, they were giving it at free at Costco - from where i upgraded to the SG4G, but chose not to.. nice try though
The only one I think I wanna wait for is the LG phone, since its to be, APPARENTLY, original android etc and it might have the 1 or 2 GB space for apps. Of course its dual core etc, and might get ginerbread much earlier then the samsung.
The drawback on the LG is the screen resolution. And we dont know how the battery life is going to be on it or any other issues.

Extreme bloatware? Have you seen a Epic 4G stock... now that is extreme bloatware compared to this.
Additionally, DoubleTwist AirSync is $5, so yeah I guess it's bloatware if you don't use it, but otherwise it's a bonus.
Honestly, I still don't understand everyone's complaint about internal memory. Move the app to the 16gb SD they provided.
Additionally, I was going to get the Nexus S but then I found out it has 16gb internal but no microSD support. I like the ability to change my storage space.
I am also coming from a My Touch 3g (3.5) and I really love the Galaxy S. I was up in the air between Nexus S, My Touch 4g, and this one. The Nexus lost out because no memory slot, the My Touch seemed a little slower (perception maybe) and the screen was not as nice. I can live with the on board memory since I can do a 32 gig card and run most apps that way. Will I regret not waiting...maybe but right now it is the best phone I have had it was easy to root and remove all the garbage I didnt want.
So I say keep it

Memory IS an issue. With the type of processor this phone has is geared toward gaming and video. Gaming is great on this phone, but alot of the high quality games needs system resources and still needs a sizable amount of memory on the phone even with SD card data moved, not to mention even the apps that have to use system resources and cannot be moved. From my experience, the paltry memory was used real quick, and I'm not the only one.

No I haven't seen Epic 4g stock.
Im a 6yr Tmobile employee, I beta test and get my phones free, so I've been thru almost all our phones. This one has to have the most on board "bloatware" I've come across out of all our phones. Now bloatware to me by definition are software that should be OPTIONAL to the end user but is not and remains on the phone using memory and not being used.
A few apps I don't use and would like to be removed,
amazon mp3 - 1.12mb
Tmobile Backup- 1.15mb
Kindle- 2.68mb
Layer- 3.0mb
Media Hub- 4.47mb
My Account- 1.35mb
Slacker Radio- 2.40mb
T-Mobile TV- 4.48mb
TeleNav GPS- 1.97mb
ThinkFree Office- 9.18mb
Y! Finance Clock- 1.2mb
Now thats only app size, not to mention the cached data and background resources these apps use. And thats just some of the stuff, I do use some of the other apps already on the phone.
Really the point I'm trying to make is that most upper tier Android phones, (which this should fall in that catagory) should almost be a prerequisite to have a sizable amount of onboard memory available to the end user and this one doesn't. Why does the vibrant have sizable memory and this doesn't?
And BTW, I do not know why everybody is dogging the MyTouch 4G, it can do everything the Gs4G can do, and has memory and camera flash and only .2 of an inch smaller screen, and of course HTC made so updates and large XDA support. Like I said...I like the Galaxy S 4G but feel I made a lateral move from the MyTouch 4G.

Galaxy S 4G for free

T Mobile has a web only deal for a Samsung Galaxy S 4G for free ending today.
For those of you that have one, can you please let me know what you think of it ? I guess it ends today so they can clear stock for the HTC sensation, but I dont think I'll be able to afford one of those, so this seems like a sweet deal.
some honest opinions would be appreciated, good or bad.

Get this phone cause I'm telling you ya won't regret it. Ever since one of the devs(drhonk) got the phone to test on things are blowing up around here(I mean that in a good way ) we have cwm and a few roms and alot of Tweaks that are gonna make that sgs4g fly and all your friends are gonna be like "wtf, I wish my phone would perform like that". Lol. But yes I would definitely recommended it especially if its for free. I mean come on that's a deal.

Too bad. I scored two for free with a new contract over mothers day weekend. Do not regret it at all. Get on the back order list off you can.
On the moon our weekends are so advanced they encompass the entire week
I'm trying to get my friend to get one but they are out of stock! Sucks!
There is no better phone, even for the 150-300 some could pay for it. I doubled my original speeds in one day just by grabbing the latest updates here. Trying to get my g/f to snag me another s4g for free during this deal for my daughter, its gonna be a family phone here, lol.
Got the same deal
They had this deal about a month and a half back. This is how I ended up with the phone. I switched over from sprint and am loving every minute of it. Not too big on the unlimited data but only 2gb of high speed cap they have in place but its cool. There is a lot going on with this phone right now to make it really bad ass, hell it is a beast completely stock.
i've had the SGS4G for a little over a month and i love it, and its gotten better the past few weeks with all the roms and other dev stuff coming out for it. it's prob just as good as the HTC Sensation for the value since you'd be paying a lot more for the Sensation now. the specs are pretty equal i think, the only thing is that it doesnt have a notification LED and no camera flash/LED either, but thats not too big an issue so i dont mind as much now.

I have no complaints about the phone myself. I was sad about the internal storage but once you fota fix that problem is solved. As far as notification light - I use Bali kernel which has BLN support. My four buttons on the bottom light up whenever I have a notification. The ext4 mod makes my phone super snappy and responsive and I can't wait until we get voodoo on top of that.
My co-worker used the Sensation over the weekend and said it seems to have some odd connectivity issues when making phone calls/texts/using data. http://forums.t-mobile.com/t5/HTC-SENSATION-4G/Sensation-4G-Data-Connectivity-Issues/td-p/875585 Every phone has it's flaws but I hope it isn't plagued by bugs like the G2X (which is an AWESOME phone but just needs a software update).
Don't get me wrong, The Sensation is a beast but I'm not a big fan of Sense UI. I prefer Go Launcher or Launcher Pro. Heck I'd even use the stock Gingerbread launcher over Sense. If you try to run an alternate launcher over Sense it seems to bog the phone down (at least on pre-dual core phones). This probably wont be a problem once they unlock the bootloader though.
Let the results speak for them selves I mean were literally blowing other phone out the water thanks to this community.

Can you point me in the right direction for this mod? I have frost bionix running, and this mod would just be the icing on the cake. Thanks!
Also, I took advantage of this deal and now my dad will have one of these awesome phones just in time for fathers day. We got the 200 mb data free for a year too. If you take advantage of this deal, make sure to call and ask for free data/10.00 off your data (if you want more than 200 mb)
Sent from my SGH-T959V using XDA App
Sure. The kernel that bionix comes with has bln support. You need to download the bln app from the market. To make it work you need to push a file to /system/lib/hw. You can find a link to the post that has this file on the bali kernel's thread. It's the fix by chadster I believe.

I am one who appreciates the thread and talk of the Infuse GB update. I had expected the GB update in Aug. like all of the other 2011 phones received. I returned my Infuse for refund due to the GB update not coming through. And I loved my Infuse. It was buggy as hell, but was a superior phone in every other way...especially music playing. As soon as the update happens...if it happens...I might just get another Infuse.
I think the Infuse will turn out to be the better phone between it and the SGS2. The screen is larger, the battery is larger and the other specs are pretty much the same. The SGS2 has NFC. But I can live without that. I see no use in a dual core. Both phones have a FFC.
GB yeah right
When I got my captivate last year(first day of release) I waited for the froyo update for ever. It was supposed to come out in Sept. but got delayed until halloween or X-mas. I had already switched to Andromeda(prob best Cappy rom ever). I lost my cappy and got an Infuse with the insurance. So far a much better phone, but I dought that we'll get an update anytime soon. Samsung is not very good with updates and at&t well they are probabably just as bad. Actually more like Apple.
Now Asus has been great with updating the Transformer.
Anyway would love to see GB but meanwhile gotten find a rom that I like.

Samsung has already built gingerbread for the Infuse, hence the Rogers base roms we're enjoying currently. The fault lies fully with AT&T, not Samsung...

that actually may not be true....one of my sources at Samsung claims they have nothing lined up for release to ATT until around Christmas

Go to any thread and there Is more than one person saying we are never gonna get it. If you weren't interested and this thread is useless then why even look at it? I was just posting this so people thinking about getting the phone have a little something to go on. Your reply was useless.
Infuse running infused v2.0.2.
Ok guys let's not play this same old tune. With some research one can find that both ATT and Samsung suck at giving updates mainly when a New phone is coming out. So all one can do is sit back and wait or flash a custom Rom.

There have been many threads about gb and when it is/isn't coming out. Thread still remains useless.

Its useless because everyone knows the infuse will get updated to GB. And no one knows when that will be. No new news has been released since it was announced; nothing has changed. I have to look at the thread because you posted it and now its on the list of threads cluttering up this forum. That's why its useless. you haven't stated anything we don't already know

Scared to buy because i heard development might be dead.

Im planning to buy it today but after reading threads about how development have been slow and might come to a halt soon. Coming from an HD2 i dont want to buy this phone only for rom development to cease 6 months later. Any reassurance you guys can offer me or should i just stay away?
Can you point to a thread where it was said development might be slowing? It seems to me like development is picking up since the release of the kernel source.
The latest AT&T OTA update might slow things slightly because it blocks the old root and unlocking exploits, but I don't think it's anywhere near dead. Still, I could be wrong. Where did you see this stated?

Did you just say your buying a phone solely on ROM development? If thats the only thing you want then this probably isnt the one for you. Even though IMO its the best phone currently out. Take a look around the forums and see for yourself if the development is up to your standard

Ah, okay. Well, not having had any other Android phone, I don't really know what to compare it to. I've been satisfied with the options available, but I'm not a Flash-aholic. There are a fair number of both Sense-based and AOSP-based ROMs to choose from, and so far none of the devs seem to be going anywhere. But, development will never equal something like the S3 or even the international One X, just because of the smaller userbase.
The other factor to consider is that if you get an AT&T One X today, it might very well come with the 2.20 update, meaning you wouldn't be able to root or unlock it right away.
It's not dead yet but even scrosler said that he will be moving on to another phone if something happens to his One X. AT&T should be ashamed of themselves for locking down this amazing phone. However the enthusiasts aren't their target customers. They don't care enough about losing us to change.
The OP is screwed if he gets a phone with the new software.
Btw, is everyone's xda app working ok? Mine won't connect or let me sign in.

Having the same problem with the Tapatalk app.
Also can't get in with any of the XDA apps.
As far as dev being dead. I don't see how. Check out the original development section, the guys are rocking in there and working hard to get things moving. Team Nocturnal is pumping out ROMs and updates for those ROMs. If the ultimate goal of "dev activity" is AOSP, which always seems to be the case, then we are very close.
The sky isn't falling, Chicken Little.
Back when the Captivate came out, people were saying the same thing for the first year the phone was out. Now go check out the Captivate forums. They are still going strong.
I think this has more to do with people not getting what they want RIGHT NOW, than anything else. Everyone wants perfect CM9 and CM10 as soon as they get the phone. It seems like a lot in the community frequently forget that these guys are doing this for free and of their own accord. Sometimes they run into problems like devices being bricked, broken...or not even having the device at all. Sometimes they are kids in HS and have other things on their plates. Not everyone has time to sit infront of a computer and develop for 12+ hrs a day.
I had my SGS2 for a good 6 months before CM9 nightlies came along.
It's also worth mentioning that if you don't at least donate to the devs, you don't really earn the right to ***** about anything.

If you're looking for a phone with development, go get an N1, Galaxy Nexus, Nexus S, etc... We got the HOX because it's the best phone on the market right now, regardless of the development scene. We are all thankful that we have a development scene, of course, but I think we all chose this phone before looking at the existing scene. As the phone matures, the scene will only get better.
What's about with the storage? I am showing only 9gb free on a brand new one x. That's just nuts? I thought 16gb was bad, now I am finding its even worse

Should be 9.93 GB dedicated to an SD card partition and about 2.34 GB dedicated to internal storage.

Why would they do that? Given that there isn't an external sd slot, this phone has less space then most if not all android phones on the market.

Coming from an iPhone I learned quickly that I either embrace the cloud for music or get a different phone. Luckily Google Music gives you 20,000 songs free and it streams very well, even on high quality mode.

I don't really store music on my phone, mostly pictures and videos which take up a lot of space. And if you add in a nandroid or two you + Titanium backup backups you are looking at a phone with no more storage room. Man such a bummer... I had no idea it was only 16g I guess I was looking at the International x and figured it would be the same as far as storage was concerned. Such a beautiful phone to be spoiled by this. Oh well my bad

This is the best phone out there today despite development.
