USB Mass Storage not showing - HTC Inspire 4G

Hey so not sure if this is sense thing or Android OS thing, but basically when plugging in my phone to the PC, Mount SD card is not an option.
I know this isn't the card, phone hardware, pc, or cable. Has to be something in the OS. I've searched all over and I can't find a option in the UI to enable / disable this....
Troubleshooting steps:
1. Tried Different Cable.
2. Tried different PC.
3. Formatted SD card and re-enabled.
4. Tried Differnt SD card (at this point I thought it was phone hardware)
5. I loaded ICS and noticed mass storage was there and working fine.
6. Loaded CoreDroid (was using RCMix3D). Option was there.
7. Did a Titanium Restore and tada option gone again.
8. Loaded RCMix3D again, option there again, until I did a titanium restore.
9. Tried with and without USB Debugging.
So this tells me something I changed somewhere disabled this (no idea how I did it because I wouldn't intentionally do that). Any help would be appricated such a weird thing... and I've seen a couple threads where this was a problem, but never saw a solution posted ... and I think this is not Sense but Android as it seems to be an issue on different models other than HTC as well.
Thanks for any help in advance!

What are you restoring with Titanium? Titanium should be used to backup user data and user apps ONLY. That is it. Sounds like you are restoring system files/apps too which is a big no no and is possibly causing your problem.

I have been doing system files too ... probably a good call on that one!! I'll reflash my rom now and let ya know, I've always done system files, but it makes sense why that is the issue.... still don't know how it's happening..
Corruption maybe?

well, to be plain and simple about it, restoring SYSTEM data from TiBu has ALWAYS been a no-no going from ROM to ROM.
restore MISSING apps and data only....never system stuff.

So that didn't work. Did an App Data only restore, not even an app restore, but that didn't fix it. I did check and USB Mass storage was working before the restore right after I flashed the new rom...
So maybe an app breaking it? Weird scenario for sure. I mean worst case scenario is I only do a restore on apps I know I need data from. Other than I dunno.

thats the key....dont just 'restore apps and data'

What didn't fix it? Your ROM is screwed up and you have to start fresh and quit making the mistakes you are making. Did you wipe and reflash your ROM? And it worked, you can connect to mass storage? Then it is fixed. Then when you go to use Titanium backup to restore your apps choose "Restore all apps with data". Then on the next screen you have to uncheck everything that is NOT in white text. Red is system apps and Green is your accounts and settings. While restoring the green items in most cases is safe, it can still cause many conflicts. So lets not do the green restore yet. We can go back and pick through the green items later.
After you restore the white items only report back if mass storage is working correctly.

Thanks... thats pretty much what I've been doing. When I saw the Rom was working pre-restore I knew what was breaking it (especially when only restoring app data. I just didn't know what EXACTLY was breaking it, and wanted to see if anyone else heard of this. I've been starting fresh and I'll admit to the system data restore (didn't know that was a "no no") but other than that ,, yea I'm trying to quit making the mistakes I'm making.... Thanks for the advise tho.

Similar issue.
i dont wana be a F****** noob and post everywhere. so this is the closest i could find. anyway, htc inspire, at&t, no option to mount as usb drive. i have had my phone rooted running rcmix3D. changed the boot logo option and it got stuck at the boot screen. eventually restored to a previous save (still rooted). i have to sd cards. 32G and 8G. i have booth backed up to my computer from a previous version as well. my 32 will not read on my phone after the fix. i tried reformatting it on my phone through the hboot and it will not mount. so i pluged it into my computer and it freezes "my computer" whether i double click it or right click it it does the same. so i am trying to mount my phone as a usb drive to get my computer to read the sd card to whip it. i have been trying via hboot but i get the error "E:unable to write to ums lunfile (no such file or directory)" excuse the long reply

If I gather what you are saying, your sd card is corrupted or damaged? Your phone and your computer won't read it? But you want to put it in your phone and have your computer read it in mass storage mode? Sounds like to me the card is fried no matter how you look at it. If it is under warranty, contact the manufaturer. If not, then toss it and get a new one.

you go it. i did call the manufacturer and they said it was a hardware issue. did not specify what kind. but they suggested to to return it. if the store wouldn't take it to just call them back and they would exchange it. pretty much the only solution to the "I/O device error" thank you for the responce though

[Q] SD Card Cleaning?

I have a permanent rooted Mytouch 4g running Virtuous Fusion, and I was wondering If I completely wipe my SD Card clean will my phone still be rooted and have the rom, backups from clockwork, and certain information on the phone like my Wifi password? Right now my SD Card is a complete mess, and I was looking too add music from my computer. Sure I could go in and delete stuff, but I have no idea what I might be doing. Thanks.
No, if you do a complete wipe of the sd, everything will go, a better idea is to connect it to a computer via the phone itself or by a card reader, and then delete stuff which you don't needed anymore
Thanks for replying, I've thought about doing that and I've gone through my SD Card only to be confused by all the random files that lead to thing's I've never even heard about.
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks
Moving to Q&A
i had the same problem, i just deleted all the related application folder that i dont use anymore and just left the android folder, Music, DCIM (picture folder).
I just decided to completely wipe everything, and I do mean everything, and re-root and add a custom rom.
Ok so actually that was a really dumb idea, because now my phone doesn't work. x[
Every time I turn it on it just show's the boot loader over and over again, and when I try to restore or factory reset it takes me to clockwork where when ever I click on an option nothing pops up. Does anyone know what I can do to fix this and just make my phone normal? As in normal I mean making my phone as new as when I bought it, well at least the software.
You can try the app "SD Maid" in my signature to clean up the phone.
You can delete the content of /mnt/sdcard/
You will loose some downloaded apps of course, but the rom will still work and system settings like wifi will still be there. Root will also be still there.
Depending where the clockwork backups are saved you will loose them too.

[Q] Titanium Backup

Hi guys, quick question
I have backed my phone up with titanium Backup, if I was to lose all my data how would I be able to re apply it? Would I just log in to titanium with my user name and upload everything??
I have looked at forums for the answer but have had no luck,
Thanks
Titanuim backup is an app. If you make a backup through this app it will back everything up into a folder on the SD card.
When you perform a factory reset it will wipe everything except whatever is on the sd card.
So after the wipe, install titanium from the market, and restore all the apps.
if your going to format the sd card, copy over the titanuim backup folder onto your pc or upload to dropbox or similar. Format the sd card, copy the folder back over and restore.
easy peasy

With out sounding to thick what I would do..
I dont have an sd card in my phone, so if I lost everything then how would I be able to get my details back on my phone?
Can I not just copy everything and put in in a folder on my computer, if then I lost all data I could then transfer it back to my phone from my computer
I did a superboot yesterday ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1577831 ) and when reading other topics about rooting they always tell you to back everything up...
Whats my best option?
Cheers
sorry im confused ? Are you using the One S now ?? or are you trying to back up files from an older phone to restore onto the One S ??
it doesnt matter if you dont have external sd (One S doesnt anyway) it will be backed up to the internal SD.
All you have to do is plug in USB and tranfer from old phone > PC > New phone

It is best to do a nandroidbackup. You can make a nandroidbackup in the recovery menu. When you have made this backup, you have copied everything on the phone as it was when you started the first time. To make a nandroidbackup you must have CWM (clockworkmod).

To back up full rom..like everything,as the post says above you would boot into recovery and back it up that way at the moment due to not having official clockworkmod..dont know if it is yet,but you can do that way.itll save everything just as you left it.
titanium back up will save apps and there data..
and can save the way you have saved your settings etc.
itll save your profile without needing to login.then click on options..then batch if its apps.or if its system data and apps choose that option.
beware though if you got 100 apps youll be there for a good ten minutes reinstalling lol.
(note--asop isnt around yet fully but dont restore system data from sense roms to asop and vice versa itll just mess your system up)
your external storage( will never be touched with relation to flashing roms etc.the only way it can happen is if your a complete numpty and select that option yourself.
best way to be honest is just play around with titanium youll get the hang of it

Thanks for the reply, when I go in to recovery it just starts the phone back up, what am I doing wrong, is there any chance you can give me the basic idiots guide on how to do this, dont want to lose all my stuff, if anything was to happen then I will be goosed..
when you go into CWM recovery and select backup, It just starts without confirmation.
It will save under a folder named 'clockwork' on your sd card, Inside that will be your nandroid backup, It consists of all apps, data, system, everything except firmware and radio. (which doesnt matter as you havent changed it)
if you every run into a problem that cannot be fixed, restoring the nandroid will put your phone back to the state it was in when you made it..
Titanium on the other hand, this backs up all apps and app data (game saves, login info ect) you mainly use this when changing ROM or doing a wipe. so that you dont have to install them all 1 by 1..
Only restore a nandroid when you run in to serious errors. NOT everytime you wipe / change ROM
Do you actually get into recovery?

Thanks for your patience, when I go in to Rom Manager I click on backup current rom, it tells me the date and time, I then click ok, the phone then restarts, when I look in manage and restore backups it's just blank??? I am using Rom Manager v5.0.0.6, is it better using a premium Rom Manager as I also have rom toolbox, when I click backup on this one it says that I must upgrade to be able to do this..

No mate far as im aware rom manager isnt supporting the s yet,the cwm had issues, youll need to switch off and boot into bootloader then choose recovery from there then into cwm then back it up.
switch off, hold volume then power till bootloader rocks up..choose recovery then your in clockworkmod then back up
+1 to that !! also, if you have root (i assume you do with having TiBackup) you can use quickboot - available on market for free, it will allow you to boot into bootloader, recovery, without having to do the button combo

[Q] Apps on SD card not showing

Sorry, its a bit of a novel, but wanted to give as much detail as possible.
I have a rooted LG P500 running cm7, with a partitioned SD card.
Today the apps on the SD card have stopped showing. The only thing I have done different today is uninstall update on play store as I was having some issues with it, I believe the apps were briefly there after this, and also it has now updated itself from market back to play store and things are still wrong, so I don't think this is the issue.
They are not showing at all in the app drawer, the ones I have shortcuts to in that bit down the bottom (don't know what its called sorry) have a green and white square android icon, and do nothing if touched. If I go into "settings", "applications", "storage use", then "SD card", it accurately shows the amount of storage I have left on the SD card, so its not like its not picking it up at all, but everything in the list that is on the SD card has a grey icon by it instead of the proper picture. Actually scrolling through the list right now, I can see the majority have the grey icon, but there is a couple with their normal icon. Some of those with the normal icon show up in my app drawer, and some don't, so its actually affecting the apps to varying degrees rather than them all not working.
If I try move anything new to the SD card it says "failed to move application"
If I go into "my apps" on play store, it is impossible to compare them all, but at least some are missing.
I have tryed each of the following several times:
Reboot
Unmount and remount SD card
Reinsert battery
The latest time I rebooted I noticed that now although all the apps are not loading still, some of the ones that did are different ones to last time.
Any ideas?
Thanks
The next thing I have tryed is I formatted the FAT32 partition and put on a back up of the SD card I made a couple of weeks ago, it made no difference.
I would like to format both the FAT32 and EXT2 partitions and repartition and start completely over again, but not sure how to do this, can't see the EXT2 partition in easeus.
ETA : I managed to get rid of the partion, format the whole card to fat32 then partition again, then put my SD card back up from a couple of weeks ago back on, and still the same problem! I am out of ideas, any help would be greatly appreciated.

what happens when you install a new app? Does it show up in app drawer? Also did you have any backup of the apps using Titanium backup?
Try some other application.. a2sd, s2e, link2sd.
Also make a swap partition.
It won't let me install any new apps, I have backups but it won't let me create anymore, it lets me restore some, but not all.
What I did with the sd card last night really screwed things up, I ended up having to go back to a nandroid. File manager is saying the sd card is empty, and I am having trouble using usb storage connected to computer, so I think I have really stuffed things.
I am going to try any ideas including the above on tonight, but if I can't fix I might just unroot, factory reset and sell the phone, go back to a text and call cheapy, i've had a lot of problems with this, although all others I have been able to fix, but most seem to come down to the fact i'm pushing apps to sd because of low internal storage, might be better off waiting to get android until I can afford a better phone.
Anyhow, i'm willing to spend another night trying to fix this, so any ideas appreaciated. Thanks
ETA:
Update, I got USB storage turned on, my computer says sd is corrupted or unreadable. Is this fixable? Thanks
Another update, when I turned off USB storage my phone also told me the card was corrupted and gave me the option to format it,, so I formatted it through the phone this time, windows is now recognising it and I am transfering back an old backup onto it, I will come back and update if it works so noone has to waste their time helping me, if I don't come back it didn't work and I will be back to try to fix the problem tonight. Thanks
Update: I am now back to a similar position as I was in at the beginning of the thread. WHen I get home I am going to reinstall the darktremor scripts as the nandroid I went to didn't have that by the looks, then hopefully once I can start utilising the EXT partition again I will be able to restore from ti backup. I'm not holding my breath though as I couldn't do this earlier on.
I know I said I wouldn't be doing it till tonight but I really wanted to get this fixed so I have been messing around with it all morning. Had all kinds of problems, but have finally got sd card partitioned, not corrupted, and both partitions recognised as they should be. My apps are still not there, however play store is letting me install now, so I am redownloading them. Titanium back up is saying there is no backups of anything, and it can't find any profiles, however as I am redownloading apps all the data that should be there is there, so yay. I will sit down tonight and spend alot of time redownloading everything, then I will make new backup with titanium. I just hope once I have done it all the apps stay there this time LOL. Thanks for the help, I will be back if it doesn't all go as planned.
ETA: Never mind I need help again already. After redownloading just a couple of apps I decided to check that ti backup would do a backup, it won't do even a single backup because of unsufficient storage space, however I have 7.4gb free on sd, 125mb free on internal and 259mb on sd-ext, why isn't there enough room?
If it helps, on my SD card there is a folder called "backups", with a folder called "apps" in it which is full of .apk file from apps i've download, and I also have a "Titanium backup" folder with properties and GZ files in it. I'm definitely not going to do anymore until tonight as I have no idea what to do now that ti backup won't restore or backup.
That backup folder is of astro file manager backup. Titanium backup is always buggy specially after you "patch it".
Best option. Delete all partitions.. format (not quick) your sdcard if possible from pc. Reflash the current rom ( make sms call bookmark and all sort of backup).. do complete wipe. Start from beginning. Fresh phone would do good!! Try some other apps too.. link2sd and s2e are good!!
Edit: Dont move ti backup to sd.. let it be in internal memory!!
had happened to me once. The SD ext becomes corrupted if my mistake the a2sd script gets deleted. u have to then reflash ur rom and script to get it working again. b4 that wipe ur SD card and partition it again. And use gobackup to backup and restore apps. it's simple and stable.

Thanks, as in my last post I did eventually get the sd card working after a few formats and repartitioning, I was having trouble with titanium backup no recognising any backups, but as I was reinstalling things that suddenly fixed itself (no idea why) so I was able to restore my backups.
The a2sd script did get deleted, but not until after I was already having problems and had to go back to a nandroid, it was the nandroid I took before originally partitioning the card so the script wasn't there, which probably didn't help things!
My ti backup is on SD, so I will move it back to the phone thanks.
Alls well that ends well, but got stressful there for a while! Had a few issues before, but none that took as long to solve as this one. I am on the lookout for a bargain on a phone that has bigger internal memory, but glad to get this working again in the meantime. Thanks everyone.
ETA: Also I did solve the problem with titanium backup saying there was no room to backup, so everything is working perfectly now. Unfortunately I can't for the life of me remember how I did it, but if I do I will come back here and post it in case anyone else has the same problem in the future.

[Q] Titanium Backup Pro problems

I've had it for ages now without any problems whatsoever.
But last night something happened that i cant rightly explain!
I un-installed a useless notpad app, that i recently installed, and after that ALL apps in TBP shows with a warning triangle, even if i do a full backup it just shows the triangle and i cant restore ANYTHING..
It says it got the app and data, but i cant do ANYTHING with it.
I even reinstalled the whole ROM, TWICE without any change in how TBP is dealing with programs..
Complete format of SD card, exct..
Still it REFUSES to let me restore my apps..
Even if do a full backup, followed by trying to restore, it says i have zero apps to restore..

That sounds like a likely possibility. Maybe try a new backup and see if you can restore that? If that works, it would tell you that the original backup somehow got corrupted.
Ok, figured out what was the problem but damn it was annoying.
Under "Filter by platform"
Check EVERY single box EVEN those who where "empty" and presto, backups worked again.
Dunno why default download of the app set it to a few select options.
Seems dumb to me.

[Q] Titanium Backup SD Card Question

I'm a little new to rooting and this is my 2nd device that I have rooted and first without an external Sd card. I currently have the ViperXL rom on my HTC One X and I want to try a AOSP Rom. I backed up everything with Titanium Backup but what I was wondering is when I factory reset my phone won't the backup get wiped too? I'm sorry if this is a noob question but I don't want to advance without confirming this because i need to know if I have to copy my backup over to my computer. And I think that the backup is in the SD Card, which i'm not entirely sure about. So also does the SD card get wiped? I'm sorry if this question has been asked already and I will delete this thread if anyone asks.
Factory reset from recovery doesn't touch your "sd card" at all. All of your stuff on your sd card will be fine, including your backups.
However, factory reset from bootloader will completely bork your sd card, and it would need to be formatted to be usable again. So, don't ever factory reset from bootloader.
Hope this helps.
Sent from my Evita
Its a fair question, since it is a little confusing that the "SD card" is not a distinct card per se, but a partition on a larger flash memory chip. But as mentioned above, it will not get wiped unless you specifically select the option in recovery to wipe the SD card.
Also, there is the rare event of some files on the SD being corrupted when flashing ROMs. Its happened to me and others in the past. So its not a bad idea to make a copy of your Titanium Backup folder on your computer "just in case".

Another Titanium Backup Question
Hey guys I know that this isn't the same question that my topic asks but I have another problem. I used titanium Backup and saved everything in my ViperXL rom for my HTC One X Att. Then i switched to a Sense 5 rom and whenever i try to restore my data my phone seems to freeze and when i reboot it doesn't show any applications or anything. It says that the titanium backup is restored but it doesn't show anything except a notification in the status bar saying a reboot is recommended. So then I go and reboot and the only thing i can do is access the apps in my lockscreen. When i boot up and try to open the app drawer nothing is in it and there is only blinkfeed and my other screen nothing seems to work. I know that i should post this in the Rom Thread and i would but as a junior member with only 8 posts including this one i can't post in Android Development yet. The link for the thread with the rom is here in case anyone wants to know what rom i'm trying this on and my backup is made from a viperxl rom. If anyone needs more details i can provide more. And on a side note whenever i factory reset it takes me back to the rom and it is working but none of my apps that i had in my backup are there. It just seems to go back to when i originally flashed the zip. thanks a lot and here is the sense 5 rom link im using.

Is there any way for me to get titanium backup to work or would i have to download each app manually? And in case its necessary i do have a full backup of the entire viperxl rom in case i have to make more titanium backups.
It sounds to me like you're restoring system data yeah? It's not a great idea to restore system data from a different ROM, as it most likely is not compatible. So if you're changing ROMs the idea is to only restore user apps.
The reason it was still playing up after you did a factory reset is because factory reset does not wipe the system partition, and that's the partition you messed up by restoring system data using Titanium.
My advice would be to reflash your ROM. Do a full wipe (cache/dalvik/factory reset/system) first. Then boot into the ROM and use the "restore missing apps with data" option in Titanium.

Thanks I thought that, that was the problem or something similar because i was wondering how some of my Venom apps would work on my non Venom One X. I'm loving my Sense 5 rom but it's a shame that i can't restore all data. I would love to be able to see my call logs, sms history, and have my phone set up in the same way but obviously that one would be a problem because of compatibility and other things like lack of apps or widgets.
As mentioned, you should only use Titanium to restore user apps (and their corresponding app data), not system data. Restoring system data across different ROMs is a nearly surefire way to cause issues (as you have found), as the different ROMs tend to handle the system data differently (store them in different locations, etc.).
There are various ways to backup and restore call longs and SMS. I personally use the app SMS Backup+, which syncs your SMS to your GMail. But there are other solutions that work fine, as well.

As far as settings and configuration, I've always just done it manually, after flashing a new ROM. Trying to restore this across significantly different ROMs (such as Sense 4+ to Sense 5) is probably not feasible. Doing it manually doesn't take much time at all.
