I'm a little new to rooting and this is my 2nd device that I have rooted and first without an external Sd card. I currently have the ViperXL rom on my HTC One X and I want to try a AOSP Rom. I backed up everything with Titanium Backup but what I was wondering is when I factory reset my phone won't the backup get wiped too? I'm sorry if this is a noob question but I don't want to advance without confirming this because i need to know if I have to copy my backup over to my computer. And I think that the backup is in the SD Card, which i'm not entirely sure about. So also does the SD card get wiped? I'm sorry if this question has been asked already and I will delete this thread if anyone asks.
Factory reset from recovery doesn't touch your "sd card" at all. All of your stuff on your sd card will be fine, including your backups.
However, factory reset from bootloader will completely bork your sd card, and it would need to be formatted to be usable again. So, don't ever factory reset from bootloader.

Its a fair question, since it is a little confusing that the "SD card" is not a distinct card per se, but a partition on a larger flash memory chip. But as mentioned above, it will not get wiped unless you specifically select the option in recovery to wipe the SD card.
Also, there is the rare event of some files on the SD being corrupted when flashing ROMs. Its happened to me and others in the past. So its not a bad idea to make a copy of your Titanium Backup folder on your computer "just in case".

Another Titanium Backup Question
Hey guys I know that this isn't the same question that my topic asks but I have another problem. I used titanium Backup and saved everything in my ViperXL rom for my HTC One X Att. Then i switched to a Sense 5 rom and whenever i try to restore my data my phone seems to freeze and when i reboot it doesn't show any applications or anything. It says that the titanium backup is restored but it doesn't show anything except a notification in the status bar saying a reboot is recommended. So then I go and reboot and the only thing i can do is access the apps in my lockscreen. When i boot up and try to open the app drawer nothing is in it and there is only blinkfeed and my other screen nothing seems to work. I know that i should post this in the Rom Thread and i would but as a junior member with only 8 posts including this one i can't post in Android Development yet. The link for the thread with the rom is here in case anyone wants to know what rom i'm trying this on and my backup is made from a viperxl rom. If anyone needs more details i can provide more. And on a side note whenever i factory reset it takes me back to the rom and it is working but none of my apps that i had in my backup are there. Is there any way for me to get titanium backup to work or would i have to download each app manually? And in case its necessary i do have a full backup of the entire viperxl rom in case i have to make more titanium backups.
It sounds to me like you're restoring system data yeah? It's not a great idea to restore system data from a different ROM, as it most likely is not compatible. So if you're changing ROMs the idea is to only restore user apps.
The reason it was still playing up after you did a factory reset is because factory reset does not wipe the system partition, and that's the partition you messed up by restoring system data using Titanium.
My advice would be to reflash your ROM. Do a full wipe (cache/dalvik/factory reset/system) first. Then boot into the ROM and use the "restore missing apps with data" option in Titanium.

Thanks I thought that, that was the problem or something similar because i was wondering how some of my Venom apps would work on my non Venom One X. I'm loving my Sense 5 rom but it's a shame that i can't restore all data. I would love to be able to see my call logs, sms history, and have my phone set up in the same way but obviously that one would be a problem because of compatibility and other things like lack of apps or widgets.
As mentioned, you should only use Titanium to restore user apps (and their corresponding app data), not system data. Restoring system data across different ROMs is a nearly surefire way to cause issues (as you have found), as the different ROMs tend to handle the system data differently (store them in different locations, etc.).
There are various ways to backup and restore call longs and SMS. I personally use the app SMS Backup+, which syncs your SMS to your GMail. But there are other solutions that work fine, as well.

As far as settings and configuration, I've always just done it manually, after flashing a new ROM. Trying to restore this across significantly different ROMs (such as Sense 4+ to Sense 5) is probably not feasible. Doing it manually doesn't take much time at all.

So I've encountered this problem on another ROM where I wasn't able to install any APK files or any other applications in google play. I did some research when it kept telling me I don't have enough space to install the application because of low memory, which I obviously knew all my memory was good enough to install something, and I came across a thread somewhere that said to delete some type of file in the sd card or the system files but I can't remember what and where it is located nor I can't find the thread again. That resolved my issue on my old ROM.
I'm having this same problem with another ROM I'm currently running. Anyone know any solutions?

i can promise you no one will help you with such a vague question. if you were able to search out your answer before, surely you can again. if not please specify what rom you are using, or more accurately post said question in that roms forum so you can get a group of people that are currently using the same rom.
not to come off mean, but you pretty much gave me enough information it compares to a person taking a car to a mechanic and saying 'my car is broke'
after looking at your post history, it seems you are having all kinds of problems with your phone.
My suggestion would be redownload your rom, put it on the sd card, then in 4ext or cwm set it to format all partitions except sd card. and then install your rom, reboot and ill bet your problems go away.

Well, I actually did search this problem I'm having when I first had it a couple weeks ago and I found a solution which was to delete a file in the system or SD card but I can no longer find it, hence the reason why I am asking for help on this.
I was able to install apps or APK files fine before I restored all my SMS and MMS messages but now I can't. I doubt it has anything to do with the ROM because it was working perfectly fine. And even after I restored all the messages, I know I have enough internal storage to install an application.
Now, what your saying is it too backup my ROM then format all partitions except the SD card. Whenever I try to back up a ROM, I don't understand why it takes up so much memory which causes it to have an error when it's in the process of backing up because of no more memory. The android secure folder that's on my SD card gets backed up with the ROM which is a big file and that's what causes it to have an error. That is when I have about 1.2gb free to backup. And people say when you backup ROMs it shouldn't be over a gig.
My ROM is Android Revolution HD 7.0.4

Problem will occur if u are restoring sms messages from a rom that isnt based on sense (like cm7, redemption, etc etc) unless you are using an app to do that like sms restore or gosms, for some reason ive had issues when i had TiBu do that for me.
I personally never backup and restore anything, sucks losing stuff but it is honestly the only way to create a clean environment. Backing up a rom takes up so much because (i could be mistaken) when you do a imaged backup from cwm or 4ext it takes even your cache folders into the backup.

I used My Backup Pro to backup and restore my messages. Hmm.. maybe I'll just backup my ROM, partition everything except my SD, and flash it again without restoring my messages and see if that helps. Thanks.

dont backup the rom, redownload it

it's my first post on this forum so I am not sure, if I placed it in right location...
There is my problem :
I downloaded and tried to install Cool3D RunnyMede v7 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1250815)
on my Htc Desire. I just downloaded it, placed on SD and using clockwork mod selected install zip from SD and thats all.
Installation was succesfull, until reboot after firs reboot it doesn't load system at all. I have S-off so it stops loading on alphaRev screen.
Before setting new rom I've made SD format, so there is nothing left except this rom's zip file. What can I do is only on recovery or bootloader menu.
Can someone tell me what I've done wrong?
How to bring my phone back to live with this room or another?
Is it possible now to place files on SD if i only can turn on recovery menu?

Did you Factory Reset from CWM? You can't just load over the top of another ROM without doing this - this will however clear all user data (user apps and data for System and User apps - i.e. call history, sms history, level of Angry Birds!)
Hoping for you that you also did a backup with CWM - will allow you to restore the phone to the state you started.
FYI - You can also get the Pro version of Titanium Backup which it will allow you to restore apps and data (including system settings and wifi etc) from a CWM backup... makes changing ROMs painless

When it comes to backup, there start funny problems, I've created it, but forgot to plase on PC copy of it before formatting SD so...
I dont have backup, otherwise there would not be problem and point to write in forum.

You can try to flash a different kernel and radio, could be that the ROM needed more space and the installation wasn;t complete.

this one is almost same, installed it and it is working Sometimes lags, don't know why, but looks grate.

Hey, so this could be a completely stupid question, but what is the 'correct' way to upgrade a ROM? At the moment I reboot into Recovery and then select 'Install .zip from SD card' and just pick the new ROM.
However, in the thread, people are saying to use a command or something? I used an all-in-one tool to remove the bootloader/root my phone (International One X) so I don't know if that command is for people rooting it via Command Prompt or what have you.
I have no idea which way is better, so I thought I'd ask here to make sure I'm not doing anything wrong.

Your method should be fine. You do need to check with the developer though as some updates require a full wipe first in order to prevent any bugs. Use titanium backup or some similar backup program so you can easily restore your apps and settings after a full wipe.

i wasn't sure on that one either, so now i know it's nothing wrong with installing from sd card. i have one question still, where can i find sony ericssons firmware, something like http://www.sammobile.com/firmware/ for samsung.
You can have some stability issues if you don't do a full wipe
I always full wipe and clear cache and dalvik cache before and after install. Overkill probably but never had a problem.
I'd do a full wipe every time but recently the ROM I'm using has been putting out updates every few days, restoring with Titanium each time is such a hassle, definite first world problem.
Your way should work but sometimes when i update without a full wipe some programs FC(force close) and i lags.
I use 4ext for recovery. It has a script that will format and wipe everything that needs to be wiped (except the SD card) then I use Titanium Backup. I bought the pro version which is less of a hassle when restoring.
-place newer rom on your sd card
-backup current rom just incase you need to go back
-use titanium backup to save your apps and app data
-wipe everything, then do it again just to make sure
-install your newer rom
-enjoy
I know this seems like a hassle everytime to update a rom but I usually flash roms 2-3 times a week and I have never had a problem with a rom that wasnt developer related. Hope this helps
Hello everyone, for starters im a complete newb at rooting phones and have never before tonight so please excuse my ignorance. I just rooted my phone which went fine, downloaded titanium backup and backed up everything, and then moved a zip of m1 cm10 and gapps onto my ext sd card. then i followed a video on how to install these. i was running clockwork recovery and did a factory reset/clear. in the video, the next screen had an option for "choose zip from sd", all mine had was something like update from external so i clicked that and it brought up my sd card files, including the cm10 and gapps files. i clicked on them (i tried each more than once) and they both stgarted to install then said failed. Im literally here freaking out because none of the apps i downloaded to restore my stuff are on my phone anymore, and when i downloaded them from the play store they said i had not backed anything up. somebody please help me, im legitimately having a nervous breakdown because i lost everything and dont know what to do.
Ok first things first. What was the fail error that CWM produced? I dont understand what you mean by none of the apps you downloaded to restore your stuff are on the phone anymore. Where did they go? If you didnt delete them they should still be there. Did you boot up after the failed attempt, and are now at a factory state OS? Perhaps titanium isnt pointed to the correct location of the backups you made. Please provide more info.
Edit: Ok I misunderstood a point. The apps I take it are gone from the factory reset, but I still dont understand why the backup data cant be restored.
Sounds like CWM didn't flash. That sounds like stock recovery. Flash factory image via Odin, reroot, and reinstall CWM. Download an app called EZ Recovery from the market and follow the instructions. You will be fine.

I've noticed that with CWM, the backup file sizes are way too small. Hence a possible corrupted backup folder. TWRP seems to work better with our device as far as backups go.
It's always a good idea to check the size of a backup afterwards before proceeding with any risky procedures like low level flashing. Luckily there is always ODIN.
With my device backup sizes range between 2.0GB and 2.34GB.

You've got to remember that CWM backs up differently now. It backs up data separately in blobs in a different folder. So your backups in clockwork are naturally smaller. Also, I've heard nothing but bad things with TWRP on this device. I'd stay away from it and stick with non touch CWM.

When I open titanium backup and try to restore, it tells me no backups have been performed. Before trying to flash cm10, I moved the backup to my external sdcard and it is still there, yet I still can't restore it and when I try to do something with the files on my card it says no application can perform this task. Ive gotten my contacts back through tha app I backed them up on so I'm at a loss for why tb Isnt working.

Launch titanium and hit menu/preferences. From there you can change the backup location to wherever you moved it to and it should see them.
Also for your contacts... If you are planning on flashing roms do yourself a favor a migrate your contacts off your phone and on to Google. That way you just log back in to your Google account after a re flash and they are all resynced. Plus you can access them from anywhere at contacts.Google.com

Did this ^ in titanium and the files show up, but it still says there is nothing to restore.
Also, could someone tell me/point me to a good method of flashing M1 cm10 onto a us cellular gs3?

I agree 100%, the non-touch version of CWM works perfectly. I could care less about touch/non-touch/color of the app etc. ALL I care about is the capability to do a sucessful restore & CWM has never failed me for that.
I did a restore from it last night & it worked perfectly. The ONLY thing I have ever had to do after a CWM restore is clear data in GMAIL to get it to send.
Hi gents. I am trying to restore my phone to a recent clockworkmod recovery backup but several of the latest backups won't restore the downloaded programs of the time, nor do they seem to be restoring the general Android settings. Older backups are working perfectly, however, and I can't think of any significant or unusual changes I made to the system that could stop it working properly. Also, I have been backing up and restoring the same way.
I'm using Revolutionary CWM v4.0.1.4, HTC ICS 4.0.4 (w/ older HBOOT for S-OFF), HTC Desire S.
I find this very strange, and unsettling that clockworkmod's backup may be unreliable. Has anybody experienced this?
Another thing, I have also been backing up the entire SD card data in the later backups (just copying to computer via card reader), thinking it may be best to restore backups with this data, but it seems to not make a difference whether this is done, or the data left as-is, or the card cleared. What's best practice in regard to the Android data that's put on the SD card?

i am having the same problem restoring CWM v4.0.1.4 backups on my galaxy s2: older backups restore perfectly and newer backups restore incompletely (some settings and SMSs, but no apps and no contacts).
i believe this is an issue with large nandroid images (containing >10,000 files) being unable to restore properly. this implies the backup itself is intact, luckily.

to rebuild my phone i started by using unyaffs on my PC to access the files on the CWM nandroid image and restore my contacts, call logs, etc:

i then used appextractor (available in the play store) to manually restore my apps and app data from the CWM nandroid image. some needed to be redownloaded.

i've read that TWRP is a more reliable way to backup and restore. i'm certainly not using CWM again.
regarding your second question, the data on your internal and external SD card is irrelevant to the function of the OS, but some apps may rely on that data. for example large apps install on the SD card.

Anyhoo, before I saw your post I ended up restoring the latest working backup and reinstalled apps, configured things, got the device mostly up to speed.. but there were some sentimental Messages I wanted to restore. I got that unyaffs exe, the 10,000 file fix one, and managed to extract the mmssms.db just fine..
But I soon learnt it seems to be a nightmare to get it back into ICS because the SQLite db is in full-vacuum mode or some such, meaning it is cached and rewritten to help avoid fragmentation or some such. So I overwrite the mmssms.db, set permissions and ownership, reboot, and it's overwritten with the current one. Argh. I tried clearing cache. Tried running SMS backup/restore apps while the 'good' mmssms.db was in place, but they seem to look at the db cache/temp data, not the mmssms.db.
For those facing my situation and want Messages from CWM/nandroid backups in ICS, I found a great tip just posted on one of the threads N-acetyltransferase linked;

I had tried using TiBu to restore Messages from nandroid backup (no success), but Dialer Storage!? How annoying. Anyhoo it's sorted.
Then I quickly found a good alternative recovery and quickly bought the premium version of 4EXT. It's very good, but get this, it actually recovered my latest CWM recovery backup no drama, just like that! Ahh well I didn't need those hours of my life anyway. I've often thought the Desire S's codename Saga is rather apt.
In conclusion, TiBu looks damn good and 4EXT is a ripper. I'd recommend it however the Galaxy S2 support is apparently unconfirmed thus far. Maybe look into it nevertheless.
