Hi xda developers,
I have recently bought a Nexus S with GB 2.3.4. I unlocked the bootloader and rooted it after reading the very good tutorials in this great forum. Now that I want to test the several ROMs and Kernels in the dev section, can you please give me some experience advices about how to backup the current ROM and Kernel to restore them if something goes wrong. Furthermore, if I like one ROM+Kernel combo how to backup them without erasing my initial backup. Is a nandroid backup using the clock work recovey sufficient please?
Yes, nandroid is sufficient. It's like a exact copy of your phone in it's current state. Anything goes wrong just restore your nandroid.

No, I it doesn't. You need to backup efs as well.. But regarding radio don't worry you can use anyone compatible with your version

Thank you, I'll backup efs before flashing new ROMs

You can always flash the stock Sprint RUU but then you will have to root again, but it will bring your phone to exactly like the day you took it out of the box.
Noob here too. I did a Nandroid backup before I flashed MoDaCo's rom and after. If I wanted to go back to the Way it was before I rom'ed it would I just flash the first backup? Also, where do you find the Sprint RUU?

yes, to go back to before you had the rom, you would restore the nandroid backup you did before you rom'ed
I had 2 Nandroid backups from different dates and when I went to restore my latest one it kept grabbing the older one, maybe because it was first in the list. I deleted the older one and it restored the correct one. Anybody else experience this or am I just doing something wrong?

Just take the one you don't want and copy it to your laptop or desktop.

Yes, I'll do that in the future.
I thought that nandroid restore would automatically use the folder with the latest date but obviously not. Just a heads up to others.
This is a little off topic, but can you restore a nandroid backup on a different phone?
I've got some dust under the screen and i'm going to try and get the phone replaced (only been 2 weeks) and it would be nice if i could just restore from a nandroid backup of the old phone.
It backs up your apps if you are not running AppsToSD.
Nandroid does NOT back up anything at all off the SD card, including the EXT2 partition where your apps are located using AppsToSD.
cool, good to know, I don't run apps to sd anyone so i think im good there
Hello All,
I just bought an Lg P999 from vidéotron here in montreal. I would like to try other rom (cyanogen etc...) But I can't find any "videotron stock firmware" If I want to go back to stock.
Can I create a backup of my current rom and make the phone exactly as is right now ? Or maybe there is already a stock firmware available somewhere i'm not aware of.
Thanks for your help

Once you root and install cwm recovery then yes you can make a backup that is an exact copy of the way your phone is setup at the time of the backup.
+1. Its very important to make a stock backup so you always have something to fall back on.

your question is ambiguous please elaborate.
i want to try a rom by starskyrob fox star 1.4.0.
dont know what tb backs up and did a batch backup and now everthing in backup/restore is gone. i used cwm to backup curent rom. think that is called a nandroid backup. after all the reading i still dont all the way get the installing new rom procedure.
will my contacts be there. and photos. should i partition my sd card. where why is my usb staorage full. etc etc. i love the fact i can do these things with my phone. i just dont want to jump the gun, i am not the type person who likes to do anything unless i tried my best to fig out what i am doing first.
i dont even know if i am using xda the right way. if not i am sorry
first,,,tb free. what all can i do with it. what does it do,i have read about it. everyone says back up user apps and ssytem data. what is system data. is that my contacts,,, if i install new rom wont tb disappear. if so where does my backup go

Tb is a program that backs up ur applications and the data attached to each app. a nandroid backup ur current configuration so it saves everything from data, apps, contacts. so best bet is nand. But if ur going into another rom then tb backup that way u can restore once ur in the other rom. Btw foxstar rom isnt working i would suggest my rom *DarkKnight build 2* or reviewers rom which is based on my build 1 called *Noble series*
Right now the only working ROMs are Dark Knight and Noble.
Titanium Backup is a great tool, and will allow you to backup everything including your apps and contacts. Your pictures should be/can be saved on your external SD card, double check that.
Backing up system apps can cause issues when moving to a custom ROM, but I always backup user apps. Yes the new ROM will remove the Titanium Backup application, but the backup for us saved externally. Simply re download TB and restore, viola!

i need one walk through on my first backup and rom install. i will gadly use your rom.

Its a process, however once you do it enough you can flash in your sleep. You'll get there, no worries.

I'm trying to get a replacement of my GS3 tomorrow since the GPS is acting weird. I backed up apps and system data using TiBu and also made a nandroid when I was still on root66. Then I odin'ed back to stock and did factory reset (by the way, that did get rid of the unlocked padlock //relief) so I'm good to go.
The question is, once I get the new phone and odin root66, can I restore the nandroid on the new phone? If not, can I restore any system data from TiBu?
I did search this in the forums and saw a few similar questions. but 2 posts said no and 1 said yes. so I'm confused.

But depending on the recovery you are using you may need to put it in the correct id folder. I know amon RA uses specific id labled folders for each device (even the same model).

Yes, you can do it (I've done it) but it's not really a great idea.
You are much much better off to spend the time & reinstall everything fresh.
I thought I read somewhere recently that because backups capture phone specific data on Samsung models that you are unable to move a backup from one phone to another without overwriting some valuable individual phone information. I've done it across multiple other model phones and tablets but hear it is Samsung specifically that has issues.
Someone with prior knowledge and/or links to discussion please chime in.
Thanks everyone. I'll err on the safe side and setup everything from scratch.

How to Nandroid Backup
Enter the recovery modified: by phone turned off, press the VOLUME UP VOLUME DOWN + '+ HOME BUTTON + POWER BUTTON.
To move between the various menu items we have to use the volume keys to select them instead must use the Home button (power button or right soft touch in some variants of the recovery).
Getting in backup and restore.
Now select Backup. Automatically start a full backup of the entire system, the procedure may take several tens of minutes. It is therefore recommended to put the phone on charge.
Once the procedure is complete reboot your phone by selecting the item reboot system now.
You will find the compressed backup file in a folder All'intenro to / sdcard / clockworkmod / backup /, the file name avraà the date and time when the backup was made.

As long as you have CWM installed on your device regardless whether your on STOCK or Custom ROM. You will find it in CWM after putting device to CWM recovery, from there you will see a selection like Backup & Restore, then click that then you will more options of what to do. It saves your ROM at current state and when you restore it it will bring back from where you/ how you use and see your phone, like all things are back to normal
