You can always flash the stock Sprint RUU but then you will have to root again, but it will bring your phone to exactly like the day you took it out of the box.

Noob here too. I did a Nandroid backup before I flashed MoDaCo's rom and after. If I wanted to go back to the Way it was before I rom'ed it would I just flash the first backup? Also, where do you find the Sprint RUU?

yes, to go back to before you had the rom, you would restore the nandroid backup you did before you rom'ed

I had 2 Nandroid backups from different dates and when I went to restore my latest one it kept grabbing the older one, maybe because it was first in the list. I deleted the older one and it restored the correct one. Anybody else experience this or am I just doing something wrong?

Just take the one you don't want and copy it to your laptop or desktop.

Yes, I'll do that in the future.
I thought that nandroid restore would automatically use the folder with the latest date but obviously not. Just a heads up to others.

This is a little off topic, but can you restore a nandroid backup on a different phone?
I've got some dust under the screen and i'm going to try and get the phone replaced (only been 2 weeks) and it would be nice if i could just restore from a nandroid backup of the old phone.

It backs up your apps if you are not running AppsToSD.
Nandroid does NOT back up anything at all off the SD card, including the EXT2 partition where your apps are located using AppsToSD.

cool, good to know, I don't run apps to sd anyone so i think im good there

[Q] Unroot

Can someone point me to a fullproof easy to follow guide to unroot a sensation? I have the stock rom, never changed it besides the new recovery thing. Also, will I lose anything like pics, txts, contacts, or apps?

Firstly, yes you will lose everything.
To get your phone back to stock you will need to flash the appropriate RUU from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1074559
Once you have done that you need to follow the Revolutionary guide to get your device back to S-On. This guide can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1192300

Hi,
If you back all those things up onto your sd card, there is no reason why you would lose them.

Obviously! But in terms of losing stuff off the phone - everything will go once the RUU is flashed.

Hi,
Sorry,I wasn't trying to be clever, but sometimes you have to "State-the-bleedin'-obvious",so that you are sure that people understand.
Thank you. I have Titanium Backup so I use that to back everything up and once I get it back to stock I have to redownload TB to restore? Also, what are the things I need to backup besides the obvious apps that will be deleted? There's a TON of things listed in TB that can be backed up. I just really want contacts, pics, and apps and don't want to miss something because it was named oddly.
Cant use TB when unrooted.
Pictures - already on the SD card.
Contacts - Export to SD card if not on your google account.
Texts - SMS backup and restore from the market.
edit: Dont think you can back up apps without root? Not sure if 'backup everything' works without root, only used TB

Hi,
If you intend to unroot, then you should consider backing up your stuff with an app or program that does NOT require root.
Titanium Backup requires root..
Ok, thanks for all the help.

[Q] I must be doing it wrong. Is there an easier way to get back to stock?

Hey, guys-
I'm unrooted and running stock Android. I have all of my settings and apps exactly how I like them right now.
In the past, I've flashed different ROMs and Kernels. When I get tired/frustrated with them and want to revert back to stock, I usually just do the 1 click revert back to factory settings. When you do that, it... well.. erases anything and everything in order to get back to factory settings.
Nothing is broke. I just don't want to delete my SD card contents and lose root. I just want to revert to the stock kernel and ROM from another ROM and kernel.
I was wondering if there's an easier way to get back to my current settings on the stock Android and Kernels WITHOUT using the 1 click revert back to factory method? If there is, could you PLEASE tell me how to do it EXACTLY? I say that because sometimes people on here give instructions that are clear as mud. Thanks!
Factory reset does NOT restore kernels or roms. It simply wipes user data.
You're confused. What you really want is a nandroid back up
If you have ROM Manager installed, open it up and go to "Download ROM". At the very bottom of the list, there should be a selection that says "Stock Images". I'm pretty sure you can use that to get back to stock. I'M NOT POSITIVE, I've never tried it before. It may unroot your phone/get rid of clockwork mod recovery. Just a suggestion

That is to relock your bootloader. Just flash a stock rom in recovery with a full wipe, You'll be unrooted.
Stock roms can be found here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1063664
It's also wise to keep your content copied on a folder on your comp. 5 minutes of copying back and you got it all back. If you got all that sorted what you should always do is once you've got a stock rooted rom, run a nandroid backup/backup restore from CWM before you flash new roms / kernels.

[Q] How to safely test the several ROMs in the dev section?

Hi xda developers,
I have recently bought a Nexus S with GB 2.3.4. I unlocked the bootloader and rooted it after reading the very good tutorials in this great forum. Now that I want to test the several ROMs and Kernels in the dev section, can you please give me some experience advices about how to backup the current ROM and Kernel to restore them if something goes wrong. Furthermore, if I like one ROM+Kernel combo how to backup them without erasing my initial backup. Is a nandroid backup using the clock work recovey sufficient please?
Yes, nandroid is sufficient. It's like a exact copy of your phone in it's current state. Anything goes wrong just restore your nandroid.

No, I it doesn't. You need to backup efs as well.. But regarding radio don't worry you can use anyone compatible with your version

can I restore nandroid on a new phone?

I'm trying to get a replacement of my GS3 tomorrow since the GPS is acting weird. I backed up apps and system data using TiBu and also made a nandroid when I was still on root66. Then I odin'ed back to stock and did factory reset (by the way, that did get rid of the unlocked padlock //relief) so I'm good to go.
The question is, once I get the new phone and odin root66, can I restore the nandroid on the new phone? If not, can I restore any system data from TiBu?
I did search this in the forums and saw a few similar questions. but 2 posts said no and 1 said yes. so I'm confused.

But depending on the recovery you are using you may need to put it in the correct id folder. I know amon RA uses specific id labled folders for each device (even the same model).

Yes, you can do it (I've done it) but it's not really a great idea.
You are much much better off to spend the time & reinstall everything fresh.
I thought I read somewhere recently that because backups capture phone specific data on Samsung models that you are unable to move a backup from one phone to another without overwriting some valuable individual phone information. I've done it across multiple other model phones and tablets but hear it is Samsung specifically that has issues.
Someone with prior knowledge and/or links to discussion please chime in.
Thanks everyone. I'll err on the safe side and setup everything from scratch.

Getting an S3 next week, how important is it to backup your IMEI?

I see some topics about it. I plan to unlock and root as soon as I get the phone.
Just how important is it to backup this, and anything else I should backup too?
its pretty important.. nothing can go wrong by backing it up. once you root it back it up just in case so your new phone wont be a $600 paperweight!
When you install CWM do a nandroid backup of stock

That's good to hear. I figured I'd make stock backup too. Having stock rooted won't mess it up I'd presume? Is there an app that does it too?
I have flashed all the roms available, including CM10 and had no trouble with IMEI. Always good to backup though. There's a fairly simple process in the CM10 OP.

once rooted and you have installed clockwork mod recovery or TWRP you can make a back up of your whole phone..this will not mess up anything. You can get these two recoveries by using the ez recovery app on google play....... To make a backup in the recovery it will say backup and restore as one of the main options

O my bad you have to be rooted in order to run the operation through a terminal emulator app
If you poke around in development there's one for Mac/Ubuntu (I think Ubuntu anyway) that does root and clockwork recovery from your computer, and that's what I use because it's pretty quick and easy.
If it can ever be important you should make a backup of it though. Since fixing things is always a process, having comprehensive resources for it can trim a lot of time.
Using QPST it only took me like 5 minutes to back mine up. Really simple. Then I put a copy of the file on my HD, on my phone's SD card and one on my Google drive. Now I'm sure I can't lose it. LoL they are small files too. Under 500kb
--Sent from GlaDos baked potato
I’d like to look further into it.
I lost my IMEI and other connection data with a bad flash of a CM10 nightly. I had to do a lot of stuff, including manually typing in my IMEI using QPST and then returning my phone to the Verizon store for them to do some factory-reset style stuff to it before I got connectivity again. (Even though I was bone-stock with a re-locked bootloader they still knew I had rooted and messed with the kernel and other stuff, btw). And its not completely correct, even though I am in my home service area I constantly have the flashing grey triangle that says I am doing international roaming. Pretty weird. So long story short, backup IMEI and everything else BEFORE FLASHING ANYTHING.

That's good, I'll probably put it on my Skydrive then too.
Is there a high chance of losing it on flashing though? I just plan to flash CM10 really.

Yes, there's always a chance you'll loose it. Better to be safe, than sorry. It only takes a couple of minutes to backup and it may save you the hassle of an exchange.
I backed up the IMEI using this method ( QPST) http://rootzwiki.com/topic/32397-tutorial-imei-backup-nv-with-qpst-us-variants/ It doesn't say should i reset the modems to mtp-adb?
it doesn't say and i would have posted it there but the guy at the end of the thread seems like he is all pissy if you ask any questions. thanks guys

Flash the file in the OP in cwm recovery for an easy backup. NOTE: Your bootloader must be unlocked for it to work.
