[Q] Laggy phone, chop! chop! - Samsung Infuse 4G

Ok so my Infuse was running OK. Then I downloaded a file manager app that can send/receive over wifi. I played around with it but then discovered that my phone got laggy as hell. The home screen was laggy and stuttery as i swiped through pages, and the live wallpaper that used to be smooth as glass turned into a choppy slide show.
I promptly nixed that app I downloaded. I then killed all running apps, force closed things I knew I didn't need, closed of services I didn't need, made sure all wifi and BT was off, and flushed RAM. I then rebooted. It got a little better but it is still laggy compared to what it was. I don't know what that crApp did to my phone! It is ruined! I really don't want to do a factory reset and lose all of my settings/apps and have to re-install, what a pain.
Is there something else to try? Maybe freeze apps (although not sure which ones I can freeze).
I am not sure how most people can use their devices if simply trying an app can slow it down so much. There has to be a way to fix.
I am on a stock ROM and rooted.

unless you reflash with master clear i do not know sorry i am still new to this
If you installed Froyo , voodoo is long gone , as Froyo overwrites kernel , files you see on your SD card are nothing more then left overs you can delete them any time you want.
I can say that compared to stock 2.1 and using stock 2.2, 2.2 has been faster for me on every level. 2.2 is not as fast as any version of cognition I have ever used so it depends on your comparison I guess.

so i can just delete the folder right?
Me too!
I'm in the same boat buddy. I'm running the latest Cognition with the ext2 lagfix from SL4A and it's almost unbearably slow. I know I must have done something wrong or there is some kind of error because it's just painfully slow. Also I have a CPU monitor and for some reason my CPU is almost always above 90%. Another weird thing I noticed is that even after I kill off the extra apps with Advanced Task Killer, they seem to open back up almost immediately. For example if I kill 12 apps, and then kill again 5 minutes later, there will be at least 7 or 8 apps running again without me opening any. I'm excited to have Froyo, Flash is rad, but I'm hoping DG comes out with a new Cognition soon because I know something is wrong with my set up right now.
At first, I have restored all my apps with Titanium (apps only), and the phone was so slow as to be unusable. Without those apps, it's fast enough. Obviously, many of those aren't fully compatible with Froyo. Will have to reinstall the apps one-by-one, and see what happens with each one. PITA, but at least the things will be more stable that way.

so its the apps huh... and we all thought froyo was going to be awesome
Can't be the apps... I installed the apps one by one after flashing cognition 2.2 and it is really slow. It was painfully slow at first, but after some use it seems that the phone "got used" to froyo or something the lag isn't THAT bad.
Maybe there's a pattern between the phones that lag and the ones that don't.
For example, mine has the 3 button combo disabled and yours?
I absolutely love FROYO I previously had an iphone 3g and jumped over to the captivate with 2.1. I wasn't really impressed with android at all until this 2.2 update. I am currently running 2.2 with the one click lag fix, also I used the alter minfree settings within the one click lag fix which sets a limit on the amount of memory the phone can use at one time, I set mine to strict seems to work well. My phone is faster than its ever been and i have used all of the various roms prior to Froyo. Try getting rid of the task killer and just use the alter minfree settings within the one click app.
Battery life seems much improved as well
You are running a leaked ROM with a bunch of weird crap in it. Kallsyms shows a whole bunch of tuner functions that I'm pretty sure we don't have and some other stuff that may be garbage or a product of the newer kernel source, I'm not sure.
This is probably just a quicky test port of the I9000 ROM so I wouldn't worry about speed (or stability) yet.
Sherpa
I have a Captivate without the 3 button issues, and it's really fast on 2.2 Cog with lagfix applied. All my apps installed without issue using TiBu. I even had the JPK euro rom installed on it with our JI6 kernel, and that worked fine too, but I couldn't drop the bloatware.
And for the guys who insist on using a task killer, and are always worried about using too much ram: http://lifehacker.com/5650894/andro...ed-what-they-do-and-why-you-shouldnt-use-them

Im pretty sure that people have already said not to restore your backups from Titanium. It has been reported to cause alot of issues. At least dont restore core system components.
No speed issues with mine.
My steps:
Re-flashed to JF6 first.
Completely wiped my internal SD card
Installed COG 2.2
Ran the LagFix from SL4A
Reinstalled TiBU and apps
Reconfigured settings/sounds/etc.
Does the email app work well for everyone? For me, it is barely usable, it always hangs and seems to slow everything down. I had to remove my exchange account because just having it there made the phone constantly lock up and freeze, and now even my yahoo takes forever to simply open the inbox.
I'm running 2.2 without Cog or any lag fix and it's incredibly slow and has horrible battery life. I'm going to try to recalibrate the battery and see if that will make it more accurate. More than likely it wont change anything.
I'm just holding out for a stable/near-final Cognition 2.2. I know it has the potential to be very zippy.

Root and do the one click lag fix. Exchange email is plenty snappy afterwords. I still don't have calendar updates, but at least I can use the email app.

Mine was the same way. It didn't even function most of the time (emails wouldn't load)
I'm running the OCLF now and I hope it makes a difference.
Edit: I'll try this to fix battery issues as well
Code:
adb shell
mount -a
rm /data/system/batterystats.bin

[Eclipse] Clearing RAM causes TWLauncher to restart

Quite an annoying problem that only started showing itself after switching to Eclipse. When clearing RAM the phone will sometimes show a blank home page and you'll have to wait about 10-20 seconds for it to fix itself. It seems like the TouchWiz Launcher is getting closed by clearing RAM and it has to restart itself. Another app I was using had to restart TW and it did the exact same thing(blank home page for about half a minute). Pictures below.
Would really appreciate some help, can't stand it sometimes. Even if no one has a fix I would still appreciate some confirmation that this is an Eclipse bug. Thanks for taking the time guys.
When you clear ram it tells you that it may stop running processes. It is not surprising that the launcher has to reload. You should never have to clear ram, android will shut down things on its own to make room for new running apps.
yes it seems to shut down the launcher for a moment..but mine comes back in like 2 seconds tops...for em it doesnt do it all the time..like I just tried it and it went right back to the homescreen immediately
@hoppermi I understand that but sometimes the RAM almost caps, I've gotten to 300 before with no processes open(well I had Skype and other such apps running in the background). Still, this was never a problem with GC or Humble. Can't speak for stock since I stayed on it for about 8 hours but it seems like a problem with TW.
Just so you know
This even happens on the Stock on occasion. Not 100% though, but every so often.
"RAM almost capping" -- assuming you mean what I think you mean -- is perfectly normal Android behavior. That's exactly why Google so adamantly recommends against running task killers. If you do actually run out of RAM, the OS will end tasks automatically.
Haha I totally forgot about that, I always wondered why I have 260mb being used, open then close PvZ or Angry birds and I'm suddenly only using 180mb. Well thanks, guess I'm done clearing RAM for the time being. Still odd that this only happens with TW.
I think most launchers try to keep themselves in the memory...the one that came with Eclipse apparently does not.

Extreme Lag, plus other issues since Jellybean Install

Purchased my Droid Razr HD on launch day and I must say I was in love with the phone on ICS. Was extremely excited when the JB update hit. But since I updated, my phone has been a complete mess. I have been patient in hopes it would fix itself, but below are some of the issues.
When I unlock the phone, the clock in the circle widget lags, so I will unlock, it will say 2:00 for a solid second or two, then update to 2:10. The time should not lag like that. It basically lags and adjusts every time I unlock it. If I haven't touched my phone in 45 minutes, I'll unlock, it will say 2:00, then two seconds goes by and it updates to 2:45
When I hit messaging to view my texts, all of my contacts show up as just phone numbers, then after a few seconds the names load. If I scroll down further they are still numbers then switch to names.
The browser goes unresponsive. Everything from inability to swap tabs, to hitting a link. Usually I'll force stop chrome.
Overall the entire phone experiences major lag issues. Typing, swapping apps, etc... Anyone else experience this? Could the phone have just downloaded the OS poorly?
same here buddy! i wish i can roll back to ics

It's seriously making me want to dump this phone.
Indeed there is lag. Here's a funny thing, I get lag using the stock launcher and swiping the page from left to right with the any of the stock image wallpapers loaded.
However, if I use a live wallpaper (say Phase Beam) the swiping from left to right with the live wallpaper active is blisteringly quick.. How fcuked up is that?
I am having the same issue. I factory reset the phone before flashing JB. I also have times that the phone is completely unresponsive and requires a hard reboot. Any ideas?
there is definite lag when scrolling over to the quick settings page, idk why motorola can't get that fixed. My big complaint is the lack of stock android browser. I hate chrome, its slow compared to the aosp browser. I actually bought another Galaxy Nexus and am going back to that. Will miss the battery life though. You could always use the utility in the dev section to go back to ICS though
I used the utility to go back to ICS. I didn't have lag issues, actually my phone on JB was much faster and smoother. I went back because of all of the features missing from JB. For instance:
1) Motorola keyboard (much better than the AOSP keyboard in JB IMO)
2) Manage internal storage feature (gone in JB)
3) Wired headphone equalizer in ICS works on anything coming out of the headphone jack. (In JB it only works in the music app)
4) Also there is a bug where if you are listening to music through headphones and get a text message, the notification only comes through at less than half volume and there is no pause in the music. I have missed several text messages because of this. Even if i know the sms is coming through and i see it appear on the screen i still can't hear it over the music
I'm sure there were a few more things i am missing, but those were enough for me to switch back.
same lagg here
on ics, adw launcher heped with my lagg, but on jb, doesnt seem to matter what launcher i use, lagg everywhere. unlocking is annoying and sms app takes a bit to populate. cant wait for a solid cm 10.1 for this. I feel like its the only fix.
I would have thoght since motorola is owned by google, the os would be as good as the nexus. NOT even close
Not the ideal solution, but have you guys tried doing a full wipe factory reset and/or wiping the cache partition?
My Razr HD has just started developing a "dim" screen from waking after a long period. Not sure if this is software or hardware, it doesnt happen all the time - maybe once a day - but I have to go to the display settings and check/uncheck the auto brightness box to fix it....
Any of you out there having a similar issue??
I installed nova launcher prime and it is extremely smooth.

I wiped my cache using fastboot and, initially at least, things seem much smoother. Give it a try.

What? I tried to get to the stock recovery, but I cannot seem to get past the "dead android" screen no matter what button combination I try.
Edit: you have to be really precise when holding down the volume up and down buttons lol
Is it hold down the power/lock button, then tap volume up? Think that's the combo on my Nexus S
I've been trying to figure out this lag thing too...I really dislike lag. I disabled Google Now & disabled the Verizon Apps as previously suggested. I also think I may have found something awesome:
It may be premature, but I believe I've found a way to get rid of almost all lag. I installed this apk called Seeder.
My lag pretty much gone. I've been disappointed in EVERY Android phone I've ever had (because of lag)...this seems to have fixed it.
I installed the leak the second it was confirmed to be the legit Verizon approved build and the lag for me was comparable if not slightly better than ICS. Nova Launcher is good though, you lose the settings menu that always lags the first time you swipe to it, but you can replace that with Power toggles for the pull-down menu.
What you're experiencing seems much worse than what I remember because the phone was still highly usable, just not perfect. I was never a big fan of Circles, even after removing it from my home screen it would find its way into my list of running processes till I froze it with titanium backup. I froze virtually all the Verizon crap that'd run constantly too and the phone has been nearly flawless since installing Nova.
Also came across several sites I need to access for work that render horribly slow on Chrome like Hawaii'sVIP, it just chugs along like a slide show. Dolphin Browser on the other hand renders heavily populated pages almost instantly. It also looks truly hardware accelerated during rapid zooming and scrolling, where Chrome often jumps around and loads the page in chunks.

Heat problems cause performance issues

Did the OTA update for 5.0 lollipop yesterday. all the issues with the factory image flash have dissapeard. It all work great now, except one thing:
When my phone gets warm, the performance really goes down, except for some games. Animations get choppy etc. Remember , I said warm, not hot, and it occurred to me from just browsing facebook or chatting.
Any one ran into this problem aswell?
no one with the same problem? my friend seems to share the exact same issue
Kindda had the same issue after adb sideloading the OTA update to my N5. It was easily getting warm which caused constant lagging. Therefore it was closing my music player app while i was listening to music and surfing the web or FB, couldn't handle several apps at the same time and Google search app kept crashing from time to time. So i just went to the recovery mode and wiped cash. It took about 10 - 15 minutes, but when i turned the phone again everything worked fine. No lagging, no crashing. Everything is flying now, it's fast and smooth as never before. I don't now if it helps you, but i think you should give it a shot.
Define "warm".

Anyone else having problem with the 'Path' app?

The Path app is practically useless for me on the A9. Loading it the first time takes almost one minute, and then it updates the latest 'moments' for another minute until the page finally done loading (if I'm lucky). Sometimes it never completely loads and just stays there on what seems like forever in the loading/spinning wheel mode. If the home page loads, scrolling down is super slow, loading each image takes a very long time.
I have tried clearing app cache/data and even uninstalling/reinstalling the app, and always the same result. Totally scratching my head here since the app runs smoothly on my M7 and even my almost 3-year old Samsung tablet. I thought maybe it's a Marshmallow compatibility problem but a friend with Marshmallow on a Nexus said he doesn't experience any problem.
I thought I'd post an update:
As I said in the OP, I found that the Path app was unusable. In the following days I also discovered one other app that acted almost exactly the same, Facebook Messenger. Just like Path, I tried uninstalling/reinstalling and clearing cache/data and obviously rebooted, but nothing worked. Luckily I don't regularly use any of these two apps so I simply uninstalled them without much thought and moved on.
Last night I received the 6.0.1 update, and right afterwards I thought I'd install the two apps again and check if there's any change, and what do you know, they're both fixed! No more slowness, lags, or any crash whatsoever. These apps are now functioning normally and as snappy as they should be.
So my monologue continues...
The slowness with Path comes back. It is not as completely useless as it was prior to 6.0.1, but it is still crazy slow to the point of ridiculousness. The slowness in Facebook Messenger app, as I mentioned above, did not come back, and the Messenger app is now normally snappy and completely usable, as it should.
Is there really nobody here using Path and can confirm the experience? This is the only app this phone is having trouble with, and the app does not show similar problem on any other phones, even much older phones. I have submitted this problem to Path, although I'm not sure if they will ever respond.
