Hi,
I'm interested in updating the radio in my sensation as I'm having low signal problems at home, but it seems like theres quite a few steps to do to be able to get the newest radio working (s-off, new recovery, new hboot, new radio). Will the official ICS update the radio? If it does then I'm thinking it might make more sense for me to wait!
Thanks

As a Tmobile user, did you flash a newer Radio with Android Revolution ROM 1.1.4 or kept the stock radio?
I also had to revert to the stock tmobile radio. data speeds are back up
i flashed it with the new android revolution rom
so the stock radio is 10.42.9007.00P_10.11.9007.15?
How is this A Theme and Apps Thread?

I am doing my research trying to learn more about the phone before I jump into my first flash etc. In the process of this I am confused about the radio version on my phone.
Everything I have seen so far indicates that the radio on my phone is a Desire radio not a inspire radio. Did this happen when I used the ACE kit to root the phone, did it change my radio version?
This is on my phone now... 12.56.60.25u_26.10.04.03_M
.
That radio works fine on the Inspire with ATT. As a matter of fact, that is the Radio ATT included in the gingerbread update.

Okay, thanks.
I was confused because the Radio sticky Thread in the Dev section lists my radio version as being a Desire Radio and the most recent Inspire radio as being 12.59.60.26P_26.11.04.21_M? Since I have not flashed anything I was wondering how a Desire radio got on my Inspire but it sounds like the Radio sticky thread may not be correct?
.
The radio you are using is FOR for the Inspire 2.47 gingerbread ROM. It is in fact ALSO the radio for the telus desire HD Gingerbread Rom. No big deal at this moment. When you flash a new custom ROM it will tell you the radio that you should flash for it. Just flash the recommended radio so it matches the ril of your ROM. So if you are running the 2.47 ATT Gingerbread ROM then you do have the correct radio.
Edited for correctness.

HTC used the same radio for telus dhd and inspire gb roms. though they did include different rils. i believe telus came with ril 153 while inspire came with 160.
the OP did have a point, the latest one listed in the inspire radio thread is does not seem correct. The one listed actually belongs to build HTC Ace Gingerbread S KT-KR 2.52.1010.2. unless im wrong which is known to happen alot
Radio_12.56.60.25_26.10.04.03_M - Cingular_US_2.47.502.7
Radio_12.56.60.25_26.10.04.03_M - Telus DHD 2.43.661.1
Radio_12.59.60.26_26.11.04.21_M - HTC Ace Gingerbread S KT-KR 2.52.1010.2
OK, I think this is now correct. I apologize to biglittlegato as he was correct. The Radio thread does need updated as it doesn't even mention the Cingular (ATT) 2.47 Rom/radio.
im in a fix to flash latest ARHD ROM....but as i have the same OP's radio... do i need to flash recommended radio or i can use this stock radio with latest ROM??

As stated many many times all over this forum, you can use any radio you want. Everything may work well for you. And some things may not like gps connection for example. It is recommended to flash the recommended radio as it matches the ril in the devs thread. Best I can say is try it. But don't start posting that you have gps issues in the forum if you don't at least follow the dev's recommendations.
When the OTA update for ICS drops, will there be a way to root and S-OFF with Revolutionary like there is for Gingerbread? Or will flashing the currently available firmwares be necessary? I'm not sure how the update process will work, as far as these things. I guess my question is: How would I root and S-OFF when ICS drops for Sensation 4g users? Thanks in advance.
Prob not right away.
Remember if you do choose to recieve the stock ics ota that you need to flash the stock recovery or you will end with a brick. Someone please correct me if i am wrong.
But with upgraded FW 3.30 and roms such as virtuous and ARHD ICS theres really no need to update to the official ics. I do understand if you want the official ics though.
Hope this helps.

Yeah, I've been trying to decide whether to go back to full stock (S-ON, etc.) and go the OTA way or just do it with the user-friendly firmwares, but I'm pretty hesitant to do the latter because of the chance of bricking. How likely is the chance of a mistake somehow being made, even if the appropriate steps are taken? I mean, I've seen all these threads with people seemingly doing it right but still ending up with bootloops, so I'm quite apprehensive about the whole thing.
Edit: Also, is the final ICS firmware backwards compatible with Gingerbread ROMs, by any chance?
Na. Ics has to run on 3.24 fw and up

You shouldn't end up with a brick if you don't have the stock recovery. I had the real stock experience Rom android 2.3.3 and when I did the software search it found the android 2.3.4 update. I downloaded it but all it says is you have made modifications to your phone...the update won't work.
Also. There is currently NO information whatsoever if revolutionary will update, and if it will support the sensation at all. If it did though I could fix my phone. Personally I'd go for the newest arhd although I can't. It's better than the official will be, I'm guessing that after a week or two sense will start to crash again. No matter what HTC have said.
I did the same as Sensation Lover. Coming from a stock 2.3.4, S-OFF and rooted. After the update completed it just stuck at the HTC splash screen upon reboot.
I just ended up reflashing the 1.50 TMO RUU and then did the update. I was S-OFF before the update via HTC Dev and that stayed.
If you are soff dont go back to son for the update. Like others have already said. You can flash the stock recovery then just use ota with soff. If you decide you want to root it'll be pretty simple

So, the official ICS RUU upgrade is here. I've had some experience with various custom ICS roms, and I found that I love Sense (3.6) and ICS.
Reading the prerequisites and other documentation got me thinking. I hope you guys can answer my questions, or some of them.
1. What does the ICS RUU have over custom ICS roms? I can't imagine anything, except for an updated radio perhaps?
This will help me determine whether I may get the ICS RUU or stay on a custom rom.
2. The prerequisite is having the HBOOT 2.00.2002 bootloader. Plenty links and instructions for backupping and flashing that, that will work.
However, *why* is is necessary to update it? Something to do with the size of the ICS RUU, which leads me to believe that the HBOOT 2.00.2002 is much smaller than my current alpharev 6.98.1002 HBOOT. But AFAIK (in general) bootloaders are quite small..
3. Are the any advantages to the HBOOT 2.00.2002 bootloader? Besides being to install the ICS RUU.
4. Since I'm thinking of updating other parts of my phone besides the OS itself (HBOOT, see point 2) I got thinking about the radio too.
My radio is version RADIO-3805.06.02.03_M
I have very poor reception in some parts of the country where I regurarly am (many weekends per year). Updating to the latest official Radio may give me better reception. Updating to what HTC considers the best radio firmware seems like a good idea, right?
Is this the wrong forum to ask these questions?

Let's see... no need to go the X-Clip route to root your phone, just do an unlock and that's it.
You should do your research first as almost all has already been answered.
1. ICS that came out is official from HTC. That means its more stable, faster, and less buggy from their eyes. And may also be true if compared to other Custom ROMs. Its a matter of preference and ROM testing to see the differences.
2. The untouched ICS ROM also works for HBOOT v2.00.002 (came from Sense 3.0 release, Gingerbread). The HBOOT v2.02.002 (came from Sense 3.6 release, Ice Cream Sandwich) is an updated version of the latter. There maybe great changes, or maybe not. I have not seen any changelog from the net. Based on my experience, HBOOT from ICS does not want the System/Lib partition to be formatted via ROM flash from recovery. But the HBOOT from the GB can.
3. Not known yet. See number 2.
4. Yes and no. Yes, because HTC wants you to use the radio that is included from the RUU as they see fit that that is the best for its ROM. No, because some ROMs or its developers, same as HTC, prefers certain radios to be used, that is if you plan to use custom ROMs. Regarding your reception, the Desire S has already been found to have a lesser or weaker reception compared to other phones. Even older Nokia phones sometimes are better from it. Depends on your area as well.

With Radios you will get different opinions on them, best thing to do is try them and see what works for you. what works good for me may not work good for you.
Does anyone know what the newest one is?
Also, do I need to flash a RIL along with the radio? Or just the radio?

Just the radio. The RIL is for EDIT: Sense ROMs, and I think it's not even necessary for JB (if there was a Sense JB ROM).
EDIT: found newest radio from marsdta in the radio thread linked above. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=29605945&postcount=1015
But if the RIL is for non-sense ROMs, isn't Jellytime a non-sense rom?

Oops. RIL is for Sense ROMs. I edited my earlier post. Sorry about that.
a noob question
what does it matter to change radio, why do you change it? signal improvements maybe ?

Better battery and better signal mostly. Especially with sense ROMs certain rils work better with certain radios. Also some radios are not compatible with aosp or newer rils.
