My HTC Sensation 4G came with an 8 GB SD card pre-installed. According to the phone, the card has a Total Space available of 7.38 BG, and only 2.87 GB of available space. Does anyone know where the other 4.51 GB of space went? I haven't put anything on the card, and no new apps have been moved on to the card.

You could try formatting it.
New To Android
I've had the HTC Sensation for about one week, so I'm not too familiar with all of its functions. I have noticed that the SD card erase function is disabled, which led me to wonder if there a some items bundled on the SD card that HTC doesn't want removed. For example, the DCIM folder.

Format it to FAT32 with your PC (folders which are needed by apps will be recreated automatically when needed).
On mine i boot into recovery and format 512mb for 4ext and 256mb for the swap and the rest fat 32.
Throw it away. Its a class 4 pile. Spend 15 buck for a class 10. 8 gb SDhc card. And enjoy a faster and more responsive phone over all

Dumped my buggy not impressive Galaxy s 4g today> (love Costcos 3 months policy) and picked up G2x. So far extremally impressed!
One question is the Costco phone guy handed my the 16gig micro SD card from the Galaxy as he said he had extras from dead phones. I said THANK YOU! and installed. However when using AppstoSd program it only see's internal mem, and Internal SD 5gs. It does not see or give option to move to my 16g Sd card?
My HD2 and Samsung worked great with AppstoSD. Am I missing something? I mean I guess the 1.2gig and 5gigs of internal is enough. But I like to also use the SD card for programs to not overload internal memory.
I have not rooted yet, will do that so I can get my Titanium backup working to see it I can do it with that.
Thanks!

Been all over that thread. This issue and the "phantom AT&T bands are two big issues on this device. However, there may be some hope at the CM end - not this item in the latest CM7 changelog"

First thank you for responding. I am not a newbie but have been rooting and testing my Hd2's for past year. My first non HTC phone in awhile was the vibrant s4g, it had its own problems with very low internal memory.
So I was excited this phone had 8 gigs plus now my 16 gig card. I have not been on these forums so I did not know it was a known issue Sorry.
So to clarify, there is no workaroud? But can I not just use root explorer and move files to the SD card? I understand apps to sd wont do it automaticly. But I plan to put my music and movies at least on SD... What would even be the use of the manufacturer putting SD slot on phone if you could not use it?
Ira that is what I do. SD card = sdcard/external_SD
Or something to that effect. I plan to keep my apps2sd on internal and SD for straight storage and backups.
From the sound of it, the clockwork mod can access the microsd so at least backups will be off the device.

What I have been doing is the basic copy and paste. I copy the app or video ect. from the sd card and paste it on the ext/sd card. If there is a faster oor easier way please let me know. I am rooted and this is the first phone I ever had with this kind of a set up with the sd card. I prefer the other way much better ala Nexus One.

That is correct. In a file manager etc. you can locate your SD Card by going to the ExternalSD folder (path: SD Card/ExternalSD). The "SD Card" is actually the internal memory, and the "External SD" is the actual SD Card. When you plug your phone into a PC two different drives come up, one for the internal and one for the SD Card. From what I know you can't put apps on your actual SD Card. However music, pics, etc. all work just fine. I have all my music on my SD Card and everything else on the internal.
P.S. When opening the internal memory in a PC it will still have an ExternalSD folder, but it will be empty. I would advise not deleting it.
There's something like 1.5GB just for apps. What the heck are you doing to "overload" it??

GPS maps will easily overload the internal SD card. If they let the map location be set, that would fix it, but most do not (yet).
Got this new samsung infuse still trying to understand it. According to the specs, the phone is built in 16gb storage? If I download apps to it, it will automatically put that in the phone storage instead of external MircoSim, Somethings I am not sure if really need the external sim for it. Like Rom Manager, if I put the MicroSim, would it install in the External instead of the internal storage. I am confused.
Cause my other HTC inspire has 1 gb memory then the external. This one is little different. Not sure what is store internal and external, should I move things around?
Slightly confused on your post. First off you mean the micro sdcard, not sim. The sim card is what makes your phone work on carrier network. The phone has built in storage and a slot to insert a micro sdcard, it comes with a 2gb which isn't much so I upgraded to a 16gb which gives me a total of 32gb's of storage. As far as where apps and such are placed, I don't worry too much about that, I just leave it where it defaults to.
As far as your inspire with 1gb of memory, that's not actual storage memory, its ram.

By default, the phone splits the 16GB of "internal" memory into 2 partitions: a 2GB partition for system usage (apps, ROM, data) and 14GB that you can mount and use as a regular SD card for storing music, videos, etc. With an external SD card installed, most apps should still drop themselves in the 2GB internal partition. The rest you can just manually move to phone storage or use TiBu to batch move.

Sorry my bad, it should be MicroSD.
just got a Sensation 4g today, coming from the Vibrant. Got a few questions:
1. so im coming from a Vibrant 3G. I am in a 4g area. Just got my sensation 4g in the mail today. I downloaded speedtest app, and am getting about the same download speeds with my sensation 4g as i got with my vibrant 3g....
any ideas?
2. what is the easiest way to transfer files (picture, movies, music, documents) from my vibrant to the sensation? On my Vibrant it had 16 Gb internal and sensation only has one. on my Vibrant most of my stuff was on the internal. Is it to just mount both to my computer as a drive and copy and paste flies from vibrant onto the sensation external sd card?
Im sure I will think of more to ask, thanks
I'd say to pull everything from vibrant into a folder in computer then from the computer over to sensation personally. But welcome I switched back and forth between vibrant and sensation for a couple months before committing to the sensation ha

I was under the impression that the Sensation has 4gb internal and the 8gb external card. when i go under settings>sd and phone storage, it says 1.06gb available on the internal and 7.0gb on the external card....
any ideas why the internal 4gb says 1gb and the 8gb says 7gb?

Around 3 GB of the phones internal storage is reserved for system files and such. And I'm not sure why, but all microSD cards are like that for some reason. They never have the full capacity that they advertise. I think it's because of how it's formatted, but I could be wrong.

I think the Vibrant 3G had a radio that was capable of taking advantage of 4G speeds, but not full 4G.
so, should i just take everything from my vibrant (internal and external sd) and copy it to the external SD (8gb) of the Sensation (pictures, videos i taken, apps, games ect...)???
---also, i have titanium backed up all my apps from vibrant. when i root sensation, should i just copy the titanium backup folder onto sensation to restore all? if so, should i copy it only internal or external?
bascially, from what i am trying to understand, there is only 1gb of internal storage to use. Correct?
If the above is correct, (and please correct me if i am wrong), when i download apps, games, take pictures, take videos, download extra content for a game (like how gameloft has you download an extra 75mb of data), ect... do these go to the 1gb of useable internal storage or the external SD?
Only apps and games are stored in the internal storage! Everything else is stored in the sd card ( including games data ) . So i would recomend you let android market restore your apps and then transfer everything else to your sd. Hope i've helped and sorry for my english

Use titanium backup (free from the market) to backup your apps and games to your Vibrant's SD Card, copy the whole titanium backup folder to your Sensation's sdcard and restore.
so i have trasfered the titanium backup folder from the Vibrant to the Sensation. Also installed Titanium backup app. when i go into the Titanium backup app, and click batch to restore my apps from the vibrant, under the option to restore my backups it does not say i have any apps backed up...
any help?
EDIT: nvm, figured it out. the back up folder was in another folder. i had to move it to the root of the SD card
Hey KB
let me know if that guide I wrote works for you
To answer your questions:
- 3GB of the 4GB internal storage is "reserved" for the system (not including downloaded apps). Seeing as how most ROMs are around 350MB this seems wasteful. You have 1.05GB user accessible storage for Apps.
- You 8GB SD card is actually calculated as 8 billion bytes (base 10), but since your computer uses binary it's actually around 7.5GB. The manufacturer reports it as 8GB out of misrepresentation. It's a longstanding issue with all sorts of storage. You'll be even more pissed off if you buy a 2TB drive
-4G is 3G. Well for most carriers anyway. TRUE 4G is LTE/Wimax, which is a different hardware radio. This is not a TRUE 4G phone. It's actually a 3.5G phone (HSPA+) and that spec reaches "4G speeds" theoretically, according to PR. In reality, you won't get those speeds. More lies.

your guide worked great! thanks!
the problem was my computer. finally tried a third computer that worked.
thanks!
How could I install my new Memory Card? I'm currently on Stock ICS Rom. No Root or Anything.
Do I need to format it first too?
Any response would be greatly appreciated.

I don't think so, normaly sd cards are FAT by default.
shoutdown the phone, plug in card. Boot phone.
If I can make a suggestion, if you're running Windows, install the SD Card into your device, plug it into your computer, and mount the SD Card into Windows. Go into Computer, right click your Sensation's SD Card, and Format it. Set the Allocation size to 64kb, type in a name you want, and click format.
Setting the byte allocation size to 64kb seems to allow the card to read at speeds around 15mb/s, and makes writing large files to the card quicker, like camcorder recordings, etc. I did this to my own Class 10 32GB mSDHC and I'm loving the results!

I have not tried. I know this causes a big speed boost for reading/writing large files on a Class 10 32GB but I don't know if it helps for other types. I would assume that, if it were a Class 10, it would help, but I'm thinking it might slow down a class 2 or class 4 card.
I bought a new PNY 32GB Class 10 SDHC card and currently have the memory card in my HTC Sensation 4G that came with it. I'm sure I'll have to copy over all my pictures and music to the new card, but how will it effect things if I just pull out the old card and swap in the new one? Will the apps still run correctly or all be present, or will it cause conflicts with the phone for me to just swap it out? If so, whats the correct procedure? Thanks so much and I really appreciate any help!
Well, if you have applications on your SD Card, just move all of them to the phone memory temporarily (so that you can move them back again to the SD card after swapping)..Afterwards, you can safely remove your SD card by going to Storage--> Unmount Shared Storage..Finally swap the cards and move the apps back to the SD card again ..I don't think you will face any problem if you follow this method..
Hope this helps
If you just stick the other one in some apps will go. Especially all of the larger apps, all of them.
