Hi gang, just got my gorgeous Inspire

I've been wanting an Inspire for a long time and thought I would have had to pay full price for it rather than a consignment deal. Looks like I was wrong and I went ahead and snagged one.
This is just a purely outstanding phone. It is AT&T's version of the DesireHD and I've been using a DHD ROM on my HD2 for quite some time now. I'm very familiar with the ROM my Inspire has, all the setup and functionality, and setting this Inspire up was nothing new. There are a few minor difference here and there, though. I can say it is definitely smoother and cleaner and quicker than DHD on my HD2.
Not really sure if I will try to root it or not. The last time I tried to root a genuine Android phone was nothing shy of a pain and misery of frustration. It was a T-Mobile MyTouch 4G and it just would not root. That was the first and only time I ever attempted a root. It left me with a very sour experience. However, not being rooted, I can't use my backup programs like MyBackup or Titanium. Nor can I use my screen capture app, ShootMe. I don't really need to use any of those, though.
Anyway, I'm enjoying my Inspire and I look forward to interacting with and being "Inspired"...lol...at the XDA Inspire community.

I was a newbie with rooting but once I did it it was EASY and worth it.

Some Android phones can be easily rooted than others. It all depends on the manufacturer and model of the phone. Don't let one bad experience ruin it for you. Here are links to two proven methods of rooting the Inspire if you are interested...

Use the Simple Root but trust me, save yourself some later hassle and click the "Fixes" option when you're done and flash the ENG S-OFF (radio S-OFF) so if you change radios, you don't lose S-OFF plus you get engineering features like fastboot (allows you to flash new radio images for one but also allows you to try out images before you actually flash them, through fastboot, which can be handy when you aren't sure about something or you are testing a new ROM)

Guys, the user experience with this Inspire is just getting better and better. It now is super fast compared to my experience with HD2 DHD ROMs. The boot-up is almost instantaneous and the page loading in menus like Manage Apps is so much faster now.
I doubt I will ever even root this glorious machine. I'm admiring like an iPhone.
For anyone on the fence about a purchase, Hell yes! Let it have a couple days of break-in and you will see the difference from first turning it on. I'm just glad I chose the Inspire over the Atrix. The Atrix is a super nice machine, but I just don't believe it can top the silky-smooth and top-notch user experience of the Inspire.

you got it right when you said the Inspire was gorgeous....my roommate is all about his iphone4, and i'm all about hating on apple (used them for 3 years and couldn't wait to be done) and telling him how great android is.
Lets just say i caught him today picking up my phone and telling me how awesome it was and how he actually wanted one after playing with the Inspire. I had the Captivate and that just didn't do anything for him, but the Inspire is just perfect!

The Inspire has some serious appeal. I still love my iPhone 4, but the Inspire has a quality all its own. My serious personal view of the DesireHD/Inspire 4G is that it should be the actual Android flagship smartphone. The OS...Android 2.2.1...combined with HTC's Sense 2.0 is just purely the cream-of-the-crop. The lag some people complain about with Android just isn't even a hint in this OS and on this hardware. I owned a WP7 HTC HD7 for about half a year and found the UI to be the smoothest I'd ever experienced. There was nothing that was a smooth. That was then, this is now. This Inspire is easily just as smooth, quick and clean as that WP7 HTC HD7. And the battery life is a little bit better, too.

Just got my Inspire two days ago. A bit leery of rooting myself. I've read the threads and instructions a few times, as well as watched the video, but I'm just terribly afraid of making a bad mistake, lol.

For what root provides, I just see no desire to do it. The sum total of the apps I won't be able to use are currently 3, MyBackup Root, Titanium backup Pro, ShootMe. For how well this phone works and how clean it is, I'm wanting to keep the iPhone style feeling I have with it. Rooting it and such would just lead to a mess for me. It would strip away the pristine cleanness and purity of this fine piece of hardware.

Understandable. I would love to be able to use ShootMe and install new themes, but with being so new at things like this, the risk seems greater than the reward. I installed Launcher Pro and I'm pretty satisfied with the amount of customability I have with it, though.
I know there's a lot more its capable of after being rooted but most of it isn't something I would use, lol.

If you mean skins, don't worry about the them. I installed a bunch of them on mine and there is no risk that I can see. Currently using the Wildflower HD and it works just like the original. I think I have 20 skins installed.

There isn't really much risk rooting the phone - the only real risk is if you apply ENG S-OFF because that involves replacing the bootloader and if something goes wrong there, you're bricked.

I don't see why everyone is afraid of rooting this phone, this is the first Android phone I've ever owned, and the first I've ever seen rooted, and I was done in a couple hours, it was easy, just read and follow instructions. For me being able to take screenshots is the biggest reason I rooted, but have found many other reasons that I'm glad I did. Messing with an iPhone for a year, if I screwed something up I would be in for a long process of re-syncing and setting everything up, but with clockworkmod, if u screw something up, a backup including all data and settings in all apps is just 10 mins away. Being able to overclock to add a little extra smoothness to the UI is very nice. And having the freedom to run the software I want and not run the software I don't want is huge.

It isn't about fear. For me, I prefer to retain the pristine nature of this phone. So I don't want to root it and open it up situations that could slow it down and cause it to be buggy.

Rooting is well worth the trouble. And to me, having all the bloatware removed yields a more pristine nature...

No, I disagree. Rooting allows you to do things that can cause issues. For people who know how to program and code, they can usually get better results. But for people who just need a phone to work and do what it normally does, rooting can be destructive.

yes ROOTING can cause somewhat destruction.
today while upgrading my phone to COREDROID, that thing bricked my phone. Somehow, I managed to fix my phone.
The coredroid thing made my BOOTING SCREEN STUCK. never got to its next step.

This is the reason I haven't rooted. I'm tech-savvy, but not a developer or anything. I see countless threads related to issues that seem to have risen from rooting. Either an issue arises during the process, or something happens that wouldn't have happened without root. And then there's that "you could brick your phone" deal. I'll stay unrooted.

[Q] HTC Inspire 4G to Nexus One?

Note: I'm posting this on multiple forums to receive more varied feedback, so if you see it in a couple places, please don't get upset.
I'm thinking of getting rid of my Inspire for a Nexus One. I'm frankly disappointed in the battery life and the customization options available to me. I've been reading these forums for quite awhile, so I'm very aware of all the options I have with my Inspire -- telling me that I can root "following this guide" or whatnot isn't going to be a game-changer for me.
What are your thoughts? What will I miss going from the Inspire to the Nexus One? What might I like better about the Nexus One? Is the trackball really that exciting?
If I do end up looking to do it, what do I have to look for when getting one? I know they sold them for TMo only first, and then brought out an AT&T compatible one. I've heard that there were two different screens available for them, does anyone have a preference or know what the difference might be? If I do end up looking for one, where should I look? Do you think there would be people willing to trade a Nexus One for an Inspire plus some cash?
I've already done a backup to the SD card via My Backup Pro - if I get a Nexus One, should I just have to insert the SIM and SD card and restore everything, or do I have to worry about more than that?
Any thoughts or advice is welcome! Thank you!

What customization options are you disappointed about? Just remember the Inspire is just 2 months old and look how far we have gotten with it so far.

True, I do recognize that I'm posting in the XDA forums! I'm speaking of a stock, unrooted Inspire. I'm not willing to root this phone -- after reading nearly everything there is to read on it, I'm convinced I will break it or get lost. I know my limits, and this is it. If there was a way to root without needing a gold card or downgrading or any of that, I might be in. There are many phones out there that can even be rooted without losing your info! This is complicated. At this point I'd simply be following directions whose actual meaning I'd be completely lost to, and just hoping that everything was done right in the right order. And if something went wrong, I'd have no idea where or how in between S-off, gold cards, downgrading, radios, sound issues, Eng S-off, etc.
I'm not knocking the people here, you have done amazing things with a phone that did NOT want to be rooted/customized. I'm just not able to take advantage of what you've done, because to be honest -- it is all above my head. And I'm not willing to be one of those people with the "Help! HTC Inspire on CM7. Beast ROM. If I helped Thank me

I wouldn't touch a Nexus One with a ten foot pole. I am too used to using modern tech. That phone is very dated and feels every month of it. It would be like me giving up my Inspire for an iPhone 3G. If I were to move to the Nexus, I'd definitely be looking at the Nexus S. It's still an older tech phone, but has a nicer screen, it's lighter, and has a great support community.
However, I really can't think of anything you could do with the Nexus One that you can't with the Inspire... Every rom you could think of is here on this phone. The Captivate devs are almost all over here now, so we have that going for us. Of course, I'm in an HSPA+ area, so I'd also be taking a nose dive in data speed.
Oh yea, and using the newest version of the LeeDroid rom with SetCPU on the "Smartass" governer, I'm just now pluggin my phone in at the 34 hour mark with 5 hours of screen time... That's pretty damn good, if I do say so my damn self.

Many of your points involve rooting, which I've already said worries me. I'm a perfectly capable computer person, but the phone tech is daunting to me. I don't know where to start, and most of the terminology is worrying. You say it's easier than it looks, but that's because you've done it! To me looking in from the outside, it's so far beyond me it's like wanting to live on a base on the moon...

Don't sweat it, man. Just hop into the "One Click Root" thread in the Development forum. It'll outline what you need to have before starting the process. It will guide you step by step through what you need to do. It's a headache when you first do it, but after that you'll be flashing like a champ. It's addictive. Feel free to PM me if you want to go through it together. I'll be more than happy to help. Just make sure you do everything with a fully charged battery.

Also, there's a video in the top part of the first post. It's for an earlier version of the root app, but it's still very viable and lets you watch someone do it before you go through it.

Maybe he will like that with the N1 you can have a dirty trackball(since most are used now) that can change colors? You know colors with a "Brownish" tint.
The only thing advantage I could think of is there is a chance to use a cheaper data plan with the N1. But then again, the last time I used a N1 was a yr ago, so now the IMEIs may be recognized by ATT. But not sure if the OP realizes that you can do this.

Yeah, I've kinda dismissed the whole "Stick it to AT&T and use a $10 data plan!" thing. From what I can tell, the ones who do it are pretty much just lucky at this point. If you can say being stuck on Edge is lucky...
*takes a deep breath* Okay, maybe I'll look into this whole rooting business. I'd say I've been through about 1/3 of the pages in that one click root thread... Seems like a fair few people are getting things mucked up -- would you say they're pretty much the ones who are messing with things I'd likely never touch? Do I ever need to worry about a radio? Does the stock rooted ROM that's loaded at the end of it allow for better battery life and overclocking? Those are really my two biggest concerns if I'm going to root (and yeah, I get that they're counterproductive!).
I know I'm asking all the noob questions over again, most of which have already been answered many times here. People tend to get impatient with people like me getting into this kind of stuff, which is one reason I chose to stay away from it. This editorial (http://www.androidcentral.com/sometimes-root-isn’t-answer) also made me think twice (or three times)...
If I get into this, what I'd like to be able to do is to copy all my SD card files onto my computer, keeping the whole thing intact, copy it all back once this thing is done and I no longer need the gold card, fire up My Backup Pro, and have everything end up right back where it was. I really feel as if this is asking too much...

I know the feeling of everything looking really complex and hard. I came from a black berry, the key to rooting with either method is reading the directions. The directions are extremely watered down. What exactly scares you about rooting, what terminology? We are here to help you. The inspire is an amazing little device.

Breaking things not so much . No one has completely bricked their inspire. There are a few things here and there that pop up and usually already have a fix posted for them.
Check out the guide to flashing at the top of this forum, I tried to get as detailed as I could.
Honestly no, Flashing a new rom (not an patch/upgrade) will be like booting your phone up for the first time. Though you can back up your sms,apps, and contacts. Everything else you will have to set up again. It can be a pain, but the pros far out weigh the cons !

Any reason you can see for me to use the hack kit over the one click?

They are both good, the hack kit lets you be a little more involved with the rooting process. Where the GUI is more automated. The GUI has the potential to flash the h-boot wrong after it is rooted and s-off, leading to a black cwm screen. You can find a fix for that in the guide that is stickied.

Ooooookay, taking a deep breath and diving in. I'll let you know when I come up for air...

I say the only reason you should use the hack kit is to understand adb commands a little bit better. I've used both methods and felt a tiny bit more accomplished with the hack kit. Don't worry about messing up, there are plenty of people willing to lend a hand.

Currently downloading the One Click with about 7 minutes to go. Is there an easy way to tell what ROMs allow for overclocking and to what point? I don't exactly see the need at the moment (I've never noticed my Inspire running slowly), but it'd be nice for future-proofing. I've been able to gather that OC requires more to do with the kernel than the ROM, and that not every ROM includes a kernel (I'm not even sure what I'd do with a kernel if I got one...). I'm figuring it's safe to assume that the stock rooted ROM that is loaded by the One Click doesn't have any OC abilities.
EDIT: I believe from most of my reading that I'm most interested in the LeeDroid ROM and accoutrements. Someone earlier mentioned that they are using this right now -- from going through his thread, it looks like that involves kernels and radios in addition to ROMS. I'm not asking for anyone to do anything special for me, but is there a step-by-step on how to go from post-One Click to happy LeeDroid?

Unless they changed it no (GUI).
Most devs will put OC or [OC] in the threads title, most of the time the kernel will flash along side of the rom. Though if it isn't and it is an optional kernel, the best method is to flash the the rom, then reboot, then flash the kernel. Most are overclocked to 1.8ghz some are 1.5ghz.
edit: You flash a kernel like you would a rom, except when flashing a kernel you don't do a full wipe, but it is best to wipe cache and dalvik cache.

I have to chime in here and say that I have rooted and flashed my old Nexus one many times and I was totally lost with the Inspire root methods. I literally got a migraine just reading through the one-click thread the first time.

What are you having trouble understanding about it?

[TESTIMONIAL] I Rooted, and It's Okay

I know there are many others out there like me. I was concerned about rooting, I'd read the editorial over at Android Central and decided that rooting this phone just wasn't for me. I just knew that I'd screw something up, I didn't know what everything meant, and I just didn't have enough trust in myself or the people here.
I started a thread, talking about getting rid of my Inspire for a Nexus One (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=13036228#post13036228). I was encouraged by the exceptionally helpful and friendly people here to at least try rooting -- they'd be here to help me if/when I needed it. I eventually acquiesced and gave it a go with Bubby's One Click Root (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=961406). I must say, that man is a genius, and if he is any indication of the brain power here on XDA, I'm very glad to be part of the community.
I had a few rough spots, but I managed to get through with logic and Bubby's FAQ (linked in his thread, USE IT!). While I was able to do this, I can see how other's might not have been able to follow. Specifically, I think that after the first reboot of the phone, the system ought to tell you to go back in and turn off fastboot and turn on USB Debugging, and tell you that you'll have to go through the initial setup again - I was afraid to do this, thinking it might mess something up. Also, when in the terminal on the phone doing the Rage thing, it ought to tell you to use the Back button to get out of the application until you reach the home screen, then relaunch the app. These are things most of you know, but for those of us who are brand new to this stuff, it's not necessarily logic (though I was able to do it).
I figured while I was at it, I might as well flash a ROM. I used the stickied Guide (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1033353) to flash LeeDrOiD's ROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=991848) with no trouble. I then used Clockwork to flash the zip file for the patch he included. Also, no trouble (yet).
I had some bumps here and there, and I asked about them and was very promptly helped. The people here care, are helpful, and are brilliant. They don't mind helping you! If you are wanting to root, but are uncertain about your own abilities (I know I was), please take advantage of the opportunities here and do it!

Likewise. I brought home my Inspire 4G today, rooted it, and I just finished installing thedonvaughn's wonderful Ingersoll 2.4. The XDA community is truly amazing.

Gonna root my friends phone tomorrow, debating if I want to use the hack kit like I did on mine or use the 1 click.

It took me a couple days because I wanted to be sure of the process. But I'm glad I rooted mine. I just installed cyanogen mod 7 and an digging it so far.

Rooted on Feb 24th using cyanogen since then. Yes...

It's good that you took the plunge and joined our modding community. Now enjoy the new freedom rooting has given you lol.

Your right about Bubby being a genius, ooh guess what? The guy isn't even old enough to drive a car. Hes a high school kid that had one hell of a future ahead of him.

Nice writeup - I recently went through the same process as you did!
I also used bubby's tool and it worked quite well. I did however, run into the black screen issue when trying to boot into recovery - bubby's tool fixed that perfectly as well!!
One thing I have to mention, which is a BIG issue for me is battery life. I came from an iPhone 4 and I thought the battery life was incredible. The Inspire out of the box was horrible with battery life for me. Before I jumped to conclusions I knew I had to wait and root. With the incredible amount of support and information on XDA I was able to really learn quite a bit before rooting. Everything went smooth and I'm now running CM7. Not only am I thrilled with the performance but I'm utterly astounded by the increase in battery life. I wouldn't go as far as saying it's double the life as it was before... but it's damn close . I'm beyond happy now - this is the way the phone should be out of the box.

I rooted my friends phone today using the hack kit. It's so damn easy, took me 10 minutes.
This is the 3rd one I've done.

Everything went smooth. I used the One-Click. I did get the black screen booting to recovery but Bubby's fix took care of that.
Now rooted and running CM 7 Gingerbread.
I don't know what I was so worked up about. It was actually quite straight forward.

eng s-off is not the proper way to fix the blackscreen, it is outdated. please refer to the sticky at the top of the general section.

I rooted my Inspire three weeks ago using the hack kit method. Had a little issue with my sd card not being a good candidate for a gold card. But once that was corrected I went right through without a hitch. tried a few different Roms, been most fond of ClearDroids 1.0.4 and 1.0.5 IMO

Hello,
Been using Android for about a year now, and am looking for someone who wants to make some fast cash to get Cyanogen 7 on my phone. I'm currently running the myTouch 4G on T-Mo, and have Gingerbread 2.3.4 running.
I normally might attempt to do this myself, but knowing that I have to downgrade, and then Root, followed by the Cyanogen load... I'm too nervous that I'm going to achieve brick, not root.

How much? I'm in Oak Park and just curious.
I've rooted 4 MT4G's, 1 recently(old one didn't agree with the pool), 3 G1's, a Desire, and a Nook, so I'm pretty familiar with rooting.

If i were you, i wouldn't relay on someone else. If something goes south how are YOU going to fix YOUR phone?

I know. That is something I've been wrestling with. Not sure how to do it otherwise. Wish I knew someone that I could trust.

That is a good starting point.

My biggest concern is undoing Gingerbread and rolling back to Froyo. Other than that... the tools along with everything I've read seem pretty solid.

I'm have the same issue downgrading with no home internet I was asking the same for someone in N.Y.C area. After a downgrade is done I can easily root and put a rom with no home internet.

guys, take your time, READ THE DIRECTIONS, and you'll be fine. you can do it!!!

I think the ideal thing to do would be to snag a cheap MT4G on eBay, and mess with rooting that way.
Then if I mess it all up, no worries.

I didn't even know what a zip file was,and now I've rooted,hacked l kinds of stuff,using adb,etc...but I did spend a lot of time reading about Linux,cell phones,etc...
Then,I read some more,and paid attention to the problems others had,and figured what to do,and what not to do.
Other words,u can do it.don't pay someone.

The unlockr.com was a good place to start for me, real simple step by step tutorials and they have some good roms, ( linked to xda), to start with. I don't know if it has been updated recently but it couldn't hurt. Rooting took me like 10 min to figure out by the way, it really isn't that difficult of a process. Good luck!

The step by step wiki is SUPER easy to follow.
When I first did it I didn't know what half of the steps meant. But you just follow them in order, trust that the people who wrote them weren't playing some prank, and everything works fine.
It's more cutting and pasting from the wiki to your terminal screen than anything else. If you can cut and paste, you can root the MT4G

theunlockr.com seems to have very straightforward instructions on how to roll back to Froyo and then actually root the MT4G.
Once the phone is rooted and running a third party rom, if you ever have a problem with cell service, like not getting voicemails, or something like that, will Tmo even help you?
Do you have to reload the stock rom prior to ever making any service requests?

Yea they won't help if you are having issues with whatever rom you are on. No rom Is perfect so you might have issues like that, if you do you just load a new rom. Trolling around the forums is a good way to see what roms have issues and what dont. Team Royal, Unity, Faux123, CM7, and evil D (unity idk if he does work by himse
lf), all make solid roms. Rooting voids your warranty (as if you didn't know that), so if by any chance you destroy you phone, un root it first then send it back. One thing I have found however is that it is almost impossible to brick you phone, ( unless you are messing with the radios so DONT!, unless you know what you a doing), that is because you can flash a backup so, if you already knew that stuff...well sorrys! If not...your welcome.

Dont worry you can do it! I was super worried my self and it took me weeks to finally jump in but now theres no turning back for me!

If you're working straight through without putting the phone aside at each milestone like I did and don't get stuck with mildly confusing errors like I did twice (SD card file system mounting confusion and an untimely update to the Android Terminal Emulator app that screwed up the keyboard—developer has since fixed the issue) and failure to CTFM (comprehend, not read) what I was reading after midnight on the first night, I'd imagine you could get it all done within a couple of hours, including backing up the stock ROM and installing the engineering bootloader. However, I would just take it one step at a time and not rush through everything.
Make sure to back up your stock ROM. The CM wiki for this phone completely ignores that process as well as any information on how to unroot, and I think it's unwise to believe that you won't ever need to revert to factory settings once you switch to CM.
I took bits and pieces from four different guides to revert and then root. I did what was most logical between the guides because none of the four that I used were as comprehensive as I think they should be for a complete newbie. The one that came closest in my opinion was the root guide for the HTC Panache from the HTC Glacier XDA wiki entry. That said, I'm not new to shells nor phone modding, so I figured it all out eventually. Installing the new ROM was the easiest part for me, followed closely by rolling back to Froyo. The middle part—rooting—requires the most patience and understanding of what's happening.

I just wanted to post, saying thank you to everyone here.
I've had my Infuse for almost 2 years now, and while it will kinda be sad to let it go here soon for a Nexus 4, I have to say, you all turned my opinion on the phone around.
I run through AT&T, and when I got the phone, it was my first smartphone. My biggest problem was all the AT&T bloatware on it. It kept running in the background, making it hard to do anything as it lagged up my phone. It really ruined it for me. I looked up online to see when I could finally leave Froyo and maybe see if it would run faster on GB, and learned about the Kies upgrade. I started the method, and it sat there for half a day doing nothing but sitting at 30% until I finally disconnected it in frustration. Turns out, it was upgrading, but the cord wasn't good enough to do it, and I had bricked my phone. I panicked, as I was trying to find a job, and without my phone, I was screwed.
I came to this site looking for help. When I finally tried a new cord and Heimdall one-click, it worked gloriously (big thank you to qwkster for all of your help on that with your informative posts here). I was so excited to run gingerbread, but something was wrong. I couldn't save contacts, and my phone just generally didn't want to work. I didn't want to try messing with it again, because I didn't want to break it. Eventually, my phone bricked itself, and at this point, I checked to find a warranty on it. My warranty had expired 3 months after I got the phone, so as AT&T tried to run me through the hoops of either an insurance claim or an early upgrade, both of which cost me money I didn't have, I finally told them I was not doing either, and told her that the best help she could give me was telling me that I don't have a warranty. I decided to root my phone that night.
After 4 hours of searching for a one-click that rooted my phone and removed all the bloatware, I finally found one of qwksters helpful posts and got it to work. My phone was finally mine, actually mine to fully control, and it was great. It ran so fast, and it just felt amazing to use, I was so excited. I started working at a corporate radioshack after that, and thats when I started getting some nice cases for it to just make me feel more like this phone was truly my phone. The cases made people think I had a stronger phone than I did, and it just made it that much more awesome.
The night before Halo 4 released though, I had remembered that halo 4 would support smartglass, and went to download the app. M$, being the great people they are, didn't let it support GB, so I looked on here again to find a work-around, and learned about Cyanogen Mod. My night was cleared and set ahead of me, and I prepared to turn my already awesome phone into something even better.
I did all the work-arounds, and got my phone upgraded to JB. At first, I worried that there were some big issues with it, such as facebook sync not working. Found out, that was really a minor issue that made me worry a lot, and it was fixable, though I've been too lazy to use it lol. Either way, I got to work to next day, and my Store Manager was dumbfounded at my phone, questioning why I didn't get a new phone at the store. I told him it wasn't a new phone, and he was surprised at what I had done to my phone, one that was discontinued and kinda forgotten about. I love what this phone does now, I love what google did with Android, and even moreso, I love the xda community for making me realize just how good an Android phone can be when the user is given control of it.
The biggest downfall is the battery life, but it lasts a day so its really not that bad. Plus, we have chargers all over radioshack, so its normally fine lol. Either way, this phone is spectacular, and I have to admit, I will hate to see it go, but I can't wait to try out an officially branded google phone.
When the day comes that I jump over to the Nexus 4 forums, I just want it to be known here that you guys made my Android experience the best it could be. The CM team and qwkster in particular are two of the greatest assets to this, and I can't thank you enough. I love this phone, and I love google even more for how well they have done with their OS and supported the community to do even greater.
Keep on doing what you are doing here, it works, it works miracles

Absolutely. You couldn't have sucked it out of my mind any better. This entire community is awesome. I donate to everyone whose code I use, and am quite happy to do so.
The Infuse is an awesome phone and my first smartphone too. It was indeed scary to to that first rooting...but it opened the door to lots and lots of other great experiences and trials with my phone.
Whatever my next phone is, I will be turning again toothed excellent folks here, and hopefully can give some code of the my own back someday.

Love the infuse. I would definitely still use that as my daily driver, but i am using a 4s just because it will not ever fail, like my phone on debloated stock gingerbread, stable as a rock. But it is on a heavily modified CM10 i made lol, still rocks. I was looking at a nexus 4, and played with the optimus G at Best Buy, and boy let me tell you, i could not slow the dang thing down! I was looking at the G, Note 2, and One X+ but something way better like the S4 will be out soon, and i might as well wait now until my contract is up in 4-5 months now.

To be honest, I have not heard one good thing about the N4 to date. Granted I haven't heard any really bad things, like the phone exploding in your hand the second you try to run it at 100%, but enough to sway me away from it.
Like you in a way, I came to these forums some time ago whilst working on what was one of my first smartphones, the HTC 8195 Wizard. Slider phone with full keyboard, halfway decent graphics, but sucky WM5.0 OS.
Next up was the HTC 8925 Kaiser, AKA "ATT Tilt", which ran WinMo 6.0 at best, but some pretty crafty and resourceful devs here on XDA ported Android to it, not just firmwares but kernels as well. L1q1D taught me a few things on kernel structure and memory mapping (really important on those phones), and the rest just seemed to fall into place; I was hooked.
The best I could do was try to port Honeycomb through use of "blind porting" from another HTC phone, but I couldn't get the kernel to fully come on line with the new memory structure, and all I could get was a really long bootloop and an almost non-functional homescreen.
Which brings me to the Infuse, which I aquired through the normal upgrade channels when contract came up. I got 2 of them, one for me, one for the now ex-girlfriend, who constantly bugs me to upgrade her phone since she's still on 2.2.1 Froyo.
Everyone here, devs and noobs, are always kind and willing to lend a kernel of knowledge, if it's something they know how to fix. If they can't fix it, they can point you to someone who can.
Lots of love and respect for everyone here on XDA, not just this forum.
There is a wealth of knowledge and information out there on just about any phone/smartphone available around the world. You can even step outside the bounds of your subscribed forum (this one) and find another phone using similar hardware, and maybe use some apps that also run on that device, even some "bloatware" from the manufacturer that you find useful, yet is not included in your favorite firmware.
Again, hate to lose another "Infuser" to the N4, but choice is choice... just don't drop it...ever.

I went the way of the N4 as well. I read many things about the phone that were bad, but after about two weeks of use I have nothing to complain about. I still use my infuse at home for browsing the internet and some games, I guess you could say my "phablet" because I can't make calls with it. I still browse these infuse forums daily! Don't think I could ever get rid of it.
