[Q] wifi death grip issue, how serious is it? - HTC Sensation

I am looking to buy a used htc sensation. But I have read about this wifi death grip issue on the internet. I want to know from actual users how serious is it. Does the signal drop totally or does it just weakens?
Another query is about the battery. Is it really poor? Can we go 1 day with moderate use of the phone? Or do we need to charge 2-3 times a day?

Look bro, i even bought a used sensee, i can confirm that those after july pieces are free from any defect...especially wifi or any other signal drop issue...
Buy an anker battery 1900 mAh for 16$ at amazon...u will never feel any probs with battery life and Smartphones need more battery than normal cheapy fones

I've only had mine a month now but I haven't noticed it at all and I play a lot of games with the phone turned sideways.

i got my sensation in the 1st week of release and it has the deathgrip and its a pain in the arse

Got my Senny at the "pre-release" (thanks wally mart) and there is no 'death grip' on mine either. I play a lot of games and stream netflix all the time via wifi so no loss of signal for me.

No death grip and my battery lasts over a day with moderate use, using a Mugen 1950 battery.

Ahhh that good old long Walmart thread we had going....
My "pre-release" Walmart one had the death grip issue as does my unit I bought on T-Mobile release day.
I have noticed with different wifi routers that better routers don't show the death grip issue. Makes sense with a better signal. Some people probably never notice any death grip problem because they have a decent or better router, or are always close to it, etc.

Yea, it depends on your router. At home I don't get deathgrip with the crappy 2wire AT&T provides with their uverse. But at my brother's house, he has an old school linksys and I get deathgrip two rooms away. At work, we have a way old router that I don't even know the name of and I can get deathgrip sitting right next to it lol.

1. so-called deathgrip:
If I try really hard to cover up that antenna I can get the signal to drop from -25dBm to -50dBm or from -50dBm to -70dBm. That means I have to wrap my two large hands around the exact sport of the corresponding antenna. I only notice this because I use a wifi analyzer.
Any normal way of holding it without noticeable effect.
2.battery:
It is on par with other smartphone batteries. I'm a mobile phone user for more than 17 years, over 20 models, over 5 operating systems, and current smartphone life cycle still sucks. I currently own and use 3 smartphones. With the correct choice of radio, ROM and setting they all survive 24h+ of normal usage.
If you buy an extended battery that can double.
My Sensation XE with the standard battery on ICS with the ICS firmware runs for 43h+ on average. Today I will have 'survived' for 68 hours without recharging but due to the festivities I have made hardly any phonecalls and had little or no mailtraffic ... so this is exceptional.
cheers

You are probably right. I have a repeater in the living room where the router is in the bedroom. I get full bars and also tick off the best wifi (supposed to consume more power) as well.
And yessss that old LONG a$$ thread. That was a epic one lol....Good times

No bro, some sensations are really free from this issue-
My sensation can catch wifi signals from around 15~20 metres while my friend's blackberry fails to do...

I hardly notice it !!

Mine definitely has the death grip problem, signal drops drastically if my hand gets anywhere near above middle of the phone..

Ok, so that means a few users do get the wifi problem while most users dont. Lets see what my experience is. Will report back after I get the phone. Thanks for all your replies. Cheers!

The death grip only occurs when you hold top of your phone and it happens when you are using YouTube but if you hold it from bottom of the screen than you won't get any death grip issue.
As for battery the battery life is crap my battery last for 2-3 hours of full charge so from 100 to 5 percent goes down in 2-3 hours
Only thing that drains the battery is brightness because on 50 percent battery and WiFi on the battery will last 3 hours. But if your brightness is higger than 50 percent then battery will die in 2 hours. The reason my battery don't last long is because when I use my phone I leave my brightness around 70% with WiFi on and I use YouTube app and 3 overs of usage will kill the battery.

Rarely notice it unless I purposely cover the whole upper back area of the phone.
However, if you plan to get a phone casing then try to test it first.
I'm using this "Mercury" casing for the phone and it definitely strangles the WiFi signal.

With the 10.59 radio I used to get it when I just touched the back of the sensation... But with the new, leaked it just happens when I touch the WiFi antenna mount... Just above the camera xD

I too suffer from said deathgrip. My router is in the kitchen, my room is just off of there. Thanks for this, I'll look into it...
Sent from my Sensation using xda premium

Well, after using the phone for about a week I can say that if I am in the same room as the router then I don't have death grip issues. But when I am in another room and I hold the phone horizontally the wifi signal strength definitely drops.
As far as battery life is concerned light usage it lasts for more than 12 hrs but on heavy use the battery goes in less than 8 hrs.
Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e

I never had any deathgrip or signal drop issues since I got my sensation from 3uk last September I tried all those things people describe around the web ,maybe a proportion of the early sensations have those defects/issues and HTC fixed them after the frustrated owners complained .

Battery pull helped

I read this in another post. I drained the battery to zero charge, and then I pulled the battery out for about 6 hours. I then placed the battery back in and fully charged it, and I must say that the carousel is back, and the home screen isn't laggy. In the meantime I used my old G1. I was reading that according to HTC they have no knowledge if this problem and that bothers me. I spent full price on two sensations to be having issues with lag, half screen goes black, poor wifi reception, call freezing, to name a few. Sorry I'm just venting, but you would think that a company such as HTC would test their products before they would release it to the public with all of these issues, but I guess it us what it is.

Powerskins

Has anyone tried out the powerskin for the sensation?
http://www.shop.power-skin.com/powerskin/htc/sensation
i have one. its nice but it gets really hot while using your phone. the heat doesn't disperse through the powerskin well. which seems to drain both batteries a bit. for instance the powerskin is almost empty if i use the phone after 30 min. even though it is much larger than my battery. somethings wrong. but having extra powers is nice and it doesnt touch the screen or mess up the screen protector.
Mod please move to proper section.

How's the size, thickness?
It's about 3/4 of an inch. If you have small pockets the size and silicon case might present problems pulling the phone out, but I have loose clothing so its not a problem. You do have the option to take the case off and use it only to recharge a dead/dying OEM batt.

Literally got mine yesterday morning from the USA.
It's about as big as I expected, and thats pretty big. I already have an Anker battery, but in all fairness I haven't seen much of a difference in battery life with it over the stock HTC battery; that could be because 1) I didn't really test out the stock HTC battery. 2) I never calibrated it properly.
Anyhow, I am addicted to my phone, so I use it a lot and my emails are set to PUSH from the server. I have wifi on a lot e.t.c.. So when I use it a lot I expect it to last somewhere in the region of 5-7 hours.
Now back to the point, with this POwerskin, I no longer fear using my phone out and about, especially when I need to get in contact with the girlfriend! It lasts far longer, so I am pleased with it. I haven't really tested it fully yet, because I do not know whether to have my Powerskin charging my phone in the background, so it sort of trickle charges the normal battery. OR, turn it on when my phone gets really low :/
Good nonetheless!

Sunglobal 1850mAh

I bought this battery http://www.sunglobal.com.my/enlarge.asp?id=93 from sunglobal for RM60 equivalent to 16usd... so far the battery performance is quite good... on a normal day i could get up till 15 hours on data and around 25 hours without data... the problem in my country is when u turn on data in my country it keeps changing from 3g and HSDPA so that really takes a lot out of the battery but still it is much better then the stock battery...
i get the same thing too..anyway i feel ICS rom does perform better in terms of battery performance.. wonder how is sunglobal when compare to anker..i never used anker before..
anyway..the attachment show my best so far..
wow that's really good... i will never be able to do that with the data on... but with the data off i think i might probably get there...
The switching between "3G" and "H" is normal. When idle it's 3G then switches to H when in use.
Phil
Yea..I didn't turn on data.. I think we are pretty much in line in terms of battery performance..anyway I'm still looking around for other battery..mugen seems very good but expensive..lol

But still if you are moving with the data on at certain places its 3G and at certain places its Hsdpa so this i think uses a lot of the battery... i have tested this battery without turning on the data and it will last for around 30-36 hours on moderate usage... i think in your country there hsdpa connection is more stable so thats why you dont have this problem... in my country they are still using cheap radio towers in a lot of places so thats why we malaysian still have this prob.. cant blame the batt though.. the problem is the phone sometimes tries its best to find this hsdpa connection so thats why it uses a lot of the batt life...
Battery
See I love the fact they have extended batteries...but the problem with those is when u get the battery it is almost impossible to find a protective case that will fit and give good protection for your phone against drops

so far i have dropped my phone more than 10 times.... Until now i have yet to find any scratches on my phone... maybe i am just lucky or maybe the phone is tough... so my point is you really do not need a case for protecting your phone but if you want extra protection then go for it... The third time i dropped my iphone 3gs the screen cracked.. so sensation is i think tougher then many phones in the market because of its built.. no harm in giving it extra protection but its just like putting airbags in cars which have seatbelts only....
Did you tested to see if it is 1850 mAh or not? Also the site posted listed the price at 89.90 MYR which is about $29.50 USD. Where did you get it for $16?
does the battery temp work ?
how is this battery compare to anker ?
thanks

Where can i get sunglobal battery near melaka or Kuala Lumpur?

reduce heat?

OK hey guys. As you know the HTC sensation overheats to unbelievable amounts, even through little use and that is the turning point for me, I am beginning to hate the phone because if it and I want to hear your opinions. I want to reduce the heat that at least I feel, I bought a case for the sensation but that just outlines the death grip issue and I bought an anker 1900mah battery but that didn't reduce heat and I couldn't tell the difference in battery life. Do you guys think that to reduce the amount of heat that I feel (because we can't change the amount that it produces) I should buy a different case and if so which one? Also should I use q stylus as well, and one again,, which one?
Thanks.
I have used the anker for a good while and I can see the difference overnight. Are you on a custom ROM at all? How many syncs do you have running in the background? Do you watch a lot of movies, listen to a lot of music, surf the web a lot, or use GPS a bunch?
All these have contributing factors in 1. Creating heat and 2. Sucking up juice.
I have an Aprolink hybrid case. It's hard rubber (prone to scratches) and outlined in TPU. I love it because it shows off the clear back of my white cover and blends the black well with the front.
I have not suffered from the heat issue since I started flashing ICS roms. Not sure its related or not though.
Well I 0 synxs running in the background and all I really do is surf the web for about 10-20 minutes at a time and occasionly download a small file and I have my phone on minimum brightness and also I am running virtuous Inquisition.
10 syncs??
Sent from my HTC Pyramid using XDA App
Hahaha sorry typo, 0 syncs. The first few months I used to play HD games while on charge and the battery got to 60 degrees celcius. Another example was during when I was using it for navigation for about 20 minutes and I couldn't physically hold it, it was so hot. I rang HTC and they said I must have a faulty phone so they sent me a replacement but it overheats on simple tasks again. Do HTC devices literally have no cooling system?
Avoid doing heavy stuff while charging. Also on navigation, it is better if the phone is not exposed to direct sunlight. Also for some reason I have noticed higher temps on gb than on ics

Traded: Tegra 3 One X for S4 One X ... WOW!

Disclaimer: This method may have been due to the fact that my device or digitizer (I'll explain further) was damaged or I had a lemon. But here is my story:
- Sold an unlocked 4S for $450
- Wanted to try out Android and hate Sammy devices...
- Decided to give HTC One X a try
- Didn't have an upgrade so had to buy an unlocked international version because it released earlier.
With my international HTC One X from Malaysia, I would barely squeeze out 2hrs of screen time, and would have to charge my device 2-3x a day, and have yellow light leakage and spots around the screen. The device would get hot and had screen flexing and sensitivity issues. Right out of the box it was glitchy and the OTA's didnt solve much. I went from ROM to ROM to ROM and battery saving apps to CPU controls for a solution. I would literally drop 2-3% every minute, and sometimes in a matter of 5 mins I would drop 8% battery. I did the built in Battery test and would get 90% after an hour and it would say batter health = good. All of this to no avail, I WAS FED UP!
I was sick of it and found someone who wanted an International One X and had an AT&T One X. He knew about the battery and screen issues but decided to trade anyway.
BOY OH BOY! The difference is night and day. It's been a few days and I have never been happier with a phone. I get close to 4 hrs of screen time on the same level of usage on one charge. 3-4 hrs of music, 1 hr web browsing, texting and phone calls all day, facebook/twitter 2-3 hrs. No heat issues and no dropoff in performance even with just 2 cores. NO LAG or random reboots at all. If anything the device feels faster! While in hoboken/nyc the other day I got 4G LTE (since AT&T doesnt have LTE all over jersey yet) and it was freaking amazing. Close to the speeds I get with my FiOS connection at home.
Anything with Nvidia in it or on it I've ever owned so far has been faulty and been a nightmare. Idk if its just my badluck or coincidence.
But thats my story. I talked to my engineer buddy and he said my phone deff had a bad digitizer/screen that was eating the battery unnecessarily.
Anyone with their thoughts?
Yea S4 is more power efficient than Tegra 3 the only thing it bests the S4 is in its graphical capabilities
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using Tapatalk 2
This is awesome to hear. At first I was bummed they changed the processor but this story exemplifies why.
The only other gripe I have about AT&T's decision making is the storage. But what can you do? I don't listen to all of my music anyways.
Not to mention the wifi (squeeze test) crap.
Glad we have the less problem ridden version here.
I've never been happier with a phone.
Sent from my HTC One XL using xda premium.
I made the switch just as you did because battery life was terrible on the Tegra 3, due to a VERY outdated kernel and 40 nm?? whereas I believe the Snapdragon S4 is at 28 nm and a more recent kernel. That really does make a huge difference. I usually just text, fb, and browse the web and with auto-brightness, auto-sync and widgets on I get ~ 4 hours of use whereas on the Tegra 3 I got about < 2 hours. I was just as fed up and disappointed as you were.
Re: battery, I will say this:
Only charge it on the charger it came with. Charged it s couple time on my Touchpad charger, and while it appears to charge up faster, the battery will "drain" faster.
I haven't even opened the charger it came with >_<
The S4 is pretty superior in every single way besides gaming, but even then the S4 is pretty damn awesome haha.
Glad to see you are enjoying it.

Not sure I understand how that would be possible. If the battery is fully charged why would it drain any faster if it was charged by a different charging method?

My perception just from observing the international One X forum, is that the Tegra 3 SoC on the international versions is glitchy as hell, causing various serious issues, and that NVIDIA is notorious for being slow to fix these sorts of bugs.

I have been getting 4 hours of screen time since I got my one X on Saturday. Pretty consistently actually. Usually right at 4 and a half. I use it sporadically at work, usually 2 hours worth by the end of the day.
Then when I get home I do pretty much the same thing, I browse XDA while I wait for games to load on PS3 or Vita.
I do not stream music or anything.
Sync files with dropbox.
Wifi typically on.
Screen with auto brightness enabled.
Minimal game play (I have a PS Vita for that but I occasionally succumb to Words or Temple Run)
My idle time can go up pretty high if I so choose but I will only get the 4.5 hour screen time on auto. Which is good for me since that's what I got on my Atrix with the brightness at minimum most of the time
