Ok so I have a mystery to solve..
I took a pic with the stock camera on rom 6.3.6 earlier tonight. For some reason the pic before it and the pic after it saved into the Gallery, but not this VERY IMPORTANT pic. The pic did in fact take successfully though, I looked at it on the phone after taking it and saw it had shot successfully. But it's not saved in the Gallery. In my mind, though, I'm thinking that even though it might not have saved properly in the Gallery folder or whatever, that it must be still held in some temp memory or folder, given that it did in fact display on the screen..and that as long as I don't turn off the phone, it must be in there somewhere still...
So you xda sleuths..any ideas where it might be stored? As I said, this pic is VERY important and I'd really really like to recover it. I'm scrounging through every folder however small with Root Explorer right now trying to find it..
If it's there it will be in dcim/cammera/
That would be where it was stored if it was saved to the Gallery, right?
Where are pics stored in the interim ie between the taking of the shot and then saving it there? While it's being displayed briefly on the screen?

I have had this problem multiple times acrobat69.
I have had to play with the OC speed and vsel - 800/64 seems to work the best for me for camera and video camera.
If I go more .. or sometimes less I get things lost, or lock up.. and just not work.. sometimes crash the phone.. this is on 6.3 rc3 - I have not upgreaded to 6.3.6 yet.
James
Hey James fwiw I've found 6.3.6 really stable for the most part. Its not that the camera crashed, it just didn't save that one time for some reason.

Is there a grey icon with a ! in the middle of it? Use the search button on this General forum a look for my thread called Failed to read/write on sdcard. It should help out with the cause, when and solution to get your picture back. I am mobile so I can't link it for you, sorry.
Hey acrobat69,
Did you try importing the pictures using Motorola Media Link? If you are sure that the pic still exists on the sd card and you did not see the error message "Low system memory" (which is when pictures generally do not save) you should try importing pics with the media link. Or, if you think you have deleted the pic accidentally or something of that scenario, try "Recuva" for windows, restores pics from sd cards, if deleted accidentally. Hope you find the pic!

Try downloading QuickPic from the market too. I use it as my gallery. In fact I have completely deleted my gallery.apk. QuickPic will scan your entire card for media files as long as there isn't a .nomedia file blocking it. Might be easier to find out where it is being held, if at all.
Much thanks to everyone who has tried to help in this thread, some really good tips, all of which Ive tried, including Recuva.
Woodrube I did the thumbnail thing and although I gained back two other pics I previously couldn't see, alas neither of them was the one I needed.
I did notice that there were more than 2 thumbnaildata files as you described..one was big like 400+kb and the other two were identical sized, 4kb. The two at the top were time stamped right about the time that I know I took the lost shot, and the third 4kb was located down towards the bottom, with a time stamp of just 2 minutes before the other two. I deleted all 3, but now I'm wondering if maybe I goofed there. Actually..just typing that out sounds like I did goof, majorly.
Maybe I'll try and recuver that third thumbnaildata file and unmount remount..damn hope I didn't screw it up
ETA: I did use Recuva and returned the 3rd file I was nervous about. It was actually called image_last_thumb and I guess I deleted it because it looked sinister being at about the same time stamp of my "issue" and also because I was working on this at 3 am and not thinking straight. At any rate, no change even once I returned it to it's proper spot. My image is lost, I think.
On the upside, I too have to recommend QuickPic. Really like the speed of it and it seems to be more stable, so far. Thanks Woodrube!
Q Pic not in gallery so where is it
None of the above, Kenny. In fact, your dash work is exactly the kind of thing we want to highlight in the Gallery.
<snivelling excuse>Weve been working hard on a new release, and support, and the Gallery has not been getting any love. </snivelling excuse>
Please email a link to your clip, and Ill get it into the list for the next Gallery update.

Hey Folks,
Not sure if this goes into the developer part of the forum, but it's pretty deep, so I guess that's the spot.
Sometimes, when I shoot a picture, my SD card umounts, or at least the camera app says so.
Now, usually a reboot fixes things. Occasionally, I had to do fsck -a, which fixed things. Now, I don't have a USB cord handy and a strange thing occurred to me: When I try to view the shot picture via the picture viewer, I can see it perfectly but I get an error message that com.android.camera force closes. But the camera isn't launched - I killed it after the first two attempts via Process Manager for Root Users - what's up? Is the camera app needed to view pictures? That seems wrong...
Thanks for all the help I can get.

That is odd...
Do you have any themes or wonky mods on your phone? To answer your last question..yes, in order to view pictures, you need to have the camera app installed.
Which build are you running? Do you happen to have a vanilla Camera.apk handy to test if something strange has happened with the one present on your device?

ADP1. Nothing else, every app is standard, although I have used the SnapPhoto app occasionally. Hm, ok, I'm half at-ease now that I know that the camera process isnt' some kind of virus.

Camera.apk is vanilla ADP1. It's really strange. Could my SD card be broken? Although, when uploading stuff from PC, playing MP3s, nothing like this seems to happen.

Ah, thanks. I've got SanDisk 16 GB category 2. I'm getting a replacement tomorrow and post the results in this thread. Though I'd like to upgrad to Cat 4 if they let me. I heard apps launched from SD card should run faster then.
I am having pretty much the same problem. I can't view any pics on my phone, although they show up on my computer when I mount the camera to my computer. All I get is a weird icon in place of all the photos. It even tells me how many photos I have in each folder, just no thumbnails shown. When I try to view an individual picture it says "The application Camera (process com.android.camera) has stopped unexpectedly." And I have to force close.
When I try to take a photo with the phone it says I need to insert an sd card to take a picture, but when I look under storage it shows the sd card fine.
I am running JF's RC30 1.41 with the BUUF theme, although I don't THINK that is causing the problem. I'm pretty sure it worked fine until the other night when I tried to take a photo with the battery really low and the phone shut down on it's own. However, I went into the card and deleted the jpg files that weren't showing a thumbnail picture thinking that would solve it, but no dice. Any thoughts? Is there a way to just re-install the camera app? I usually use SnapPhoto but the same no sd card message occurs with both camera apps.
I reported this issue to Google here:
http://code.google.com/p/android/is...ID Type Version Security Status Owner Summary
Their official position is "There's been some significant improvements in that area that will be in a future release." Hopefully, this is included in RC33 just coming out, even though it has not been mentioned so far.
My interim solution was to use a different card (my trouble card was a SanDisk 8GB). I used a 2GB for a while with no problems at all, but I have been using another 8GB car for a week and have not had any trouble. I'd recommend a Class 6 card like the Adata I just got.
i noticed when i remove the camer.apk i lose the shortcut to the picture viewer and the shortcut when long pressing the home screen to add a wallpaper. after removal the only option is wallpaper gallery
Just an update. I don't know why I didn't do this sooner, but after removing the bad .jpg's from my sd card I finally rebooted the phone and I now have a working camera and I can browse my pictures. So anyone else having problems, check your picture folders for files that won't show a thumbnail and remove those. See if that helps. Just remember to reboot your phone afterward.
If the thumbnails have become corrupted then that can cause crashes. Delete thumbnails so it can catologue all the picstures again
I'm terribly sorry but I forgot the promised update to this thread.
They gave me a replacement SanDisk SD card at fnac without much of a hassle and after the phone had indexed the 2200+ pictures on the phone, everything was smooth. I don't have camera app crashes at the moment.
My SanDisk ist 16 GB Class 2. Lots of thanks to funbacon!
Hi guys.
I've got an annoying issue with my beloved HTC Desire and I really hope someone can help me with this. Here's the situation...
When I had just received my Desire, I took some test-videos with it. "Testvid1" I'll call the first video I ever made. Seeing as how these videos were just to try the phone out, I soon deleted them.
Now... a while later, I made some new videos and the problem at hand is that the first new video I make, incorrectly receives the thumbnail from Testvid1. Small issue sure, but quite annoying.
I have tried numerous things to solve this, like deleting all files in /sdcard/DCIM/.thumbnails, or making a copy of the video on the phone only to conclude the copy also received the incorrect thumbnail. I've also deleted all videos on the phone and made new ones.
The last approach presented me with the same issue, where the "first" new video I make keep getting the same incorrect thumbnail, the one representing Testvid1.
So to me it feels like somewhere in the android OS filesystem, there is a thumbnail from my Testvid1, which for some reason did not get removed when I removed the video itself. Any time I would clear all videos and make a new "first" video, this video will get this thumbnail which doesn't seem to ever get removed.
I really would appreciate some help with this cus as small an issue as it may be, it's a very annoying one. Does anyone have any idea how to go about clearing the cache for the thumbnails, or where on the android OS the thumbnails are located? I've searched with ASTRO but haven't been able to find any hint of a directory containing thumbs, other than the /sdcard/DCIM/.thumbnails/, which again I have already deleted several times.
As a small note, I got a response from a guy in another forum who said he had the same problem, and fixed it by deleting the directory /sdcard/android/data/com.cooliris.media/cache but personally I don't even seem to have the folder /sdcard/android.
Also please forgive me for posting this in the general forum and not the HTC Desire forum, I do this because I feel like this is more related to the android OS than the phone itself.

Today I spent ages sorting out all my pictures on my computer then loaded up Zune and told it to sync (I have delete from phone option disabled in Zune)
Off it went then I noticed it said it was deleting from phone arrrghh
I stopped the sync and checked the phone and yes it has deleted all the pictures (luckily I have 90% of them on my hdd already) but is there anyway to recover the ones it deleted?
And why did it delete them when I had the option disabled?
My case is pretty different from you,but I just want to let more people know the issue of WP7.
actually I tried to add a folder into my device, however, once everything done. I enter the pictures hub,i have found my folder there, however, all the pictures in my camera roll disappeared, but luckily i jump back to the menu and choose DATE,i can find my camera roll pictures there(it is not deleted, but disappeared).weird...god damn WP7...
This situation is pretty random...now all the pictures is back to my camera roll again,it has happened 3 times on my device.oh my god....

Is it Samsung Focus with sdcard?
That's why I started using skydrive or whatever it's called to upload all pictures I take to a private online album. It's great because it just happens. You don't even know it's doing it.
So I check my Xoom out this morning and Boom "Low on Space 'Tablet storage space is getting low'. It is impossible that I filled all of the space. I looked at my breakup and i have about 6Gb of music and it says the rest is completely full due to applications. I look at my applications but I only have about 3GB worth of application and data attributed to saves (manually counting). For the most part, besides the stock honeycomb apps, these apps are the same that I have on my Droid1. Which has much smaller storage. Somehow some app is taking up all the space (which i can't identify), the OS is corrupted, or I have a virus. Everything else has been pretty mainstream applications.
I have the OTA update and my Xoom has never been rooted.
Is anyone else having this problem?
A lot of people got this issue. It is being discussed in the Motorola official Xoom forum. But still no one know what's the root cause.

Hi Everyone,
For those users not yet experiencing this but wants to see whats going on, I made a video. There is also a way to check to see if this is occurring to you by checking out your internal storage on the Xoom.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tWFeq0Qj3iA
Is there anyone else experiencing this issue on their Xoom?
It happened to me last night while playing WordFeud. I get the two line message "Low on space" and "Tablet storage space is getting low"
There is no way that I am using 25 gig in applications.
Thanks,
Dan
My initial guess is that it is Application specific. My xoom has 628Mb for Applications. I think maybe some app that each of you is using is continuing to pull in data and not deleting it over time. Maybe something like a news stream or something else. I would chat with the others having this problem and see what similar apps you have.
Just a thought. Sounds odd, I agree.. but.. a place to start. Maybe akin to a memory leak.
Thanks for the quick reply, eaglecomm. Your suggestion makes sense. In looking around a little this morning, I see that some people thought it might be the Google Body app, which I had installed. I uninstalled it, but it didn't make a difference.
It turns out that there is a fix coming in the next update.
The thread is at the Motorola Owners Forum titled 'XOOM Storage is Full' problem - 47 apps takes up 27 GB?
Since I am a new member here, I cannot post the actual link.
I thought I would post this info for any other Xoom owners that are have this concern.
I am glad to see it is being addessed.
Thanks,
Dan
My Xoom is not indicating that it is low on storage, but the applications do seem to be taking up an inordinate amount of space. Funky little bug.
On a positive note, it is good to know that the functionality of this device will only get better over time.
Tombstones
Are any of you able to look at the sizes of the files in /data/tombstones? I had the same problem and did some digging and found a tombstone file that is 19 GB. It appears to have been generated by a browser crash. If any of you are having the problem can you open a terminal and go to /data/tombstones and find the biggest file and type cat (name of biggest file) and tell us the name of the process (listed after pid). You may need to be rooted and may need busybox for cat to work. I doubt it's only the browser... I'm curious to know if it's a honeycomb thing with how it tombstones app crashes.
Have you tried using a cache cleaner ? I use 1 Tap Cleaner and Fast Cache Cleaner .
Try using DiskUsage to view what is using up your storage. If you're rooted it gives you even more options to view specific folders. If you've ever used WinDirStat then this is the closest thing android has to it that I've found.

Although Moto is promising an update "soon" to fix this, the problem has been getting reported on for over 45 days now. Some people were hit with this early and some more recently - like myself. This one was sort of the last straw for me. I had to do a factory reset on mine (in Settings) in order to resolve this issue; which hasn't reared its ugly head again since. However, between that mess, and no SD card, SMS, etc, I finally got fed up and rooted mine so that I could use the Tiamat kernel and at least add a 32 GB SD card in the slot provided. Rooting also allowed for Clockwork Recovery (which I love) so making modifications is much easier. If and when Motorizon decides to provide us with the 4G update, then I'll flash it back to stock. However, in the right here and now, I needed a tablet for my work and didn't have the luxury to sit around with my hands tied and wait for Moto to finally have pity on us and provide what they hyped us with. The XOOM has become too integral a part of my work and home life. The product answered a lot of needs - some I didn't even realize that I had. I'll just have to do the extra step now of flashing back to stock when (and if) update time finally comes around. Until then, I'm moving forward and I've got WORK to do!! Yippee kyy-yaayyyy!!
I have this problem and looked in my folders trying to find large files using ES File Explorer. I have found a repeating set of folders here:
/sys/module/usbhid/drivers/hid:generic-usb/module/drivers/hid:generic-usb/module
These folders keep going and going and going. I tried to look at the properties of the sys/module folder but the file size kept going and going and going. I ran it all night and it was still running in the morning at 1.25GB and counting. Is it safe to delete the repeating set of folders? Does anyone know what these folders are used for?

Looks to me like a recursive bug where the folder or device is continually being created inside itself, it would cause everything from unstable os to complete unresponsiveness and even filling up the storage.

Hi there,
In HTC Desire, there was an option which put the time & date taken to the photos that you took,
I cannot find that option in Sensation, is it removed? If so, can it be added?
Thanks.

Try copying the jpg files to a Windows PC, right-click, Properties, Details, and see if the metadata contains the date/time stamp. This should also show up under the Date column in Windows Explorer when you display file details.
I like the timestamp on the image as well, but unfortunately i don't think the option is there.
Currently all images taken on my Sensation have the wrong meta-data for "Date Picture Taken", they all show taken on 30/11/2010 01:00 - looks like a bug to me - anyone else seeing this?

"Data Picture taken" is empty on my pics...
I have a UK-bought Sensation, acquired at the start of August 2011. Like pootle78, my pictures also all have the same false embedded date, the same one: 30/11/2010 01:00
Things is: I cannot find anywhere to alter this. The time on the device is correct, and the clocks etc all work.
All assistance appreciated: I really rely on embedded dates in my pictures - years from now I won't have a clue otherwise.
Thanks.
Been on to HTC. Guy sounded as if no one had ever mentioned it before. Suggested I go for a reset (after asking whether the clock was set correctly..!) BUT, it slipped out, he says you cannot back up SMS s before you do that. How is that ? I transferred about 800 from my ancient BlackBerry, which could back up everything so far as I know, but HTC Sensation cannot back up its own SMS s ?? I find that astonishing.
Anyone got a work-around for that please? Sorry if this is off-topic: it is and it is not, if you see what I mean.

Thank you. Will try. And will post results of HTC suggested Gallery reset; he promised an email within 15 mins, 2 hours ago...
Posted from my HTC Sensation Z710e
Well, I went through his procedure (which I will set out if it has worked), which was less drastic than an email I got after a "submit query" on the ht.com site - "factory re-set" etc.
I though it had not worked (pictures when backed up on the PC still said the false date) but I will re-transfer the pictures to my PC, because, now if I bring up a picture in "Gallery" and look at "details" on the HTC, the correct metadata appears for the date for all pictures, taken before and after the fix. So I will do a re-copy to the PC and see. And report back.
It is as I suspected. The "fix" (perhaps it was there all along) produces the correct date metadata within the phone. However, when the pictures are copied to my PC (Windows XP Pro), the same pictures have the false, fixed-date metadata. So it looks like a mis-match between Windows and Android. How I will ever be able to get that through the near-impenetrable wall of the HTC website I have no idea. I am NOT going lightly to do a factory re-set. It's what every vendor always starts by saying. "Start again with vanilla version". Easy for them to say but a serious nuisance for the user. Can you image a car-repair shop starting out its diagnosis of an engine fault by saying "change the engine and we'll talk about it then" ? Anyway, the Android metadata is working: it's retention of the data on transfer that falls over.
