Hi there,
In HTC Desire, there was an option which put the time & date taken to the photos that you took,
I cannot find that option in Sensation, is it removed? If so, can it be added?
Thanks.

Try copying the jpg files to a Windows PC, right-click, Properties, Details, and see if the metadata contains the date/time stamp. This should also show up under the Date column in Windows Explorer when you display file details.
I like the timestamp on the image as well, but unfortunately i don't think the option is there.
Currently all images taken on my Sensation have the wrong meta-data for "Date Picture Taken", they all show taken on 30/11/2010 01:00 - looks like a bug to me - anyone else seeing this?

"Data Picture taken" is empty on my pics...
I have a UK-bought Sensation, acquired at the start of August 2011. Like pootle78, my pictures also all have the same false embedded date, the same one: 30/11/2010 01:00
Things is: I cannot find anywhere to alter this. The time on the device is correct, and the clocks etc all work.
All assistance appreciated: I really rely on embedded dates in my pictures - years from now I won't have a clue otherwise.
Thanks.
Been on to HTC. Guy sounded as if no one had ever mentioned it before. Suggested I go for a reset (after asking whether the clock was set correctly..!) BUT, it slipped out, he says you cannot back up SMS s before you do that. How is that ? I transferred about 800 from my ancient BlackBerry, which could back up everything so far as I know, but HTC Sensation cannot back up its own SMS s ?? I find that astonishing.
Anyone got a work-around for that please? Sorry if this is off-topic: it is and it is not, if you see what I mean.

Hi,
I use GOSMS PRO(Free in the market)
It has a batch backup option.
Might be worth checking out.

Thank you. Will try. And will post results of HTC suggested Gallery reset; he promised an email within 15 mins, 2 hours ago...
Posted from my HTC Sensation Z710e
Well, I went through his procedure (which I will set out if it has worked), which was less drastic than an email I got after a "submit query" on the ht.com site - "factory re-set" etc.
I though it had not worked (pictures when backed up on the PC still said the false date) but I will re-transfer the pictures to my PC, because, now if I bring up a picture in "Gallery" and look at "details" on the HTC, the correct metadata appears for the date for all pictures, taken before and after the fix. So I will do a re-copy to the PC and see. And report back.
It is as I suspected. The "fix" (perhaps it was there all along) produces the correct date metadata within the phone. However, when the pictures are copied to my PC (Windows XP Pro), the same pictures have the false, fixed-date metadata. So it looks like a mis-match between Windows and Android. How I will ever be able to get that through the near-impenetrable wall of the HTC website I have no idea. I am NOT going lightly to do a factory re-set. It's what every vendor always starts by saying. "Start again with vanilla version". Easy for them to say but a serious nuisance for the user. Can you image a car-repair shop starting out its diagnosis of an engine fault by saying "change the engine and we'll talk about it then" ? Anyway, the Android metadata is working: it's retention of the data on transfer that falls over.

Hi guys.
I've got an annoying issue with my beloved HTC Desire and I really hope someone can help me with this. Here's the situation...
When I had just received my Desire, I took some test-videos with it. "Testvid1" I'll call the first video I ever made. Seeing as how these videos were just to try the phone out, I soon deleted them.
Now... a while later, I made some new videos and the problem at hand is that the first new video I make, incorrectly receives the thumbnail from Testvid1. Small issue sure, but quite annoying.
I have tried numerous things to solve this, like deleting all files in /sdcard/DCIM/.thumbnails, or making a copy of the video on the phone only to conclude the copy also received the incorrect thumbnail. I've also deleted all videos on the phone and made new ones.
The last approach presented me with the same issue, where the "first" new video I make keep getting the same incorrect thumbnail, the one representing Testvid1.
So to me it feels like somewhere in the android OS filesystem, there is a thumbnail from my Testvid1, which for some reason did not get removed when I removed the video itself. Any time I would clear all videos and make a new "first" video, this video will get this thumbnail which doesn't seem to ever get removed.
I really would appreciate some help with this cus as small an issue as it may be, it's a very annoying one. Does anyone have any idea how to go about clearing the cache for the thumbnails, or where on the android OS the thumbnails are located? I've searched with ASTRO but haven't been able to find any hint of a directory containing thumbs, other than the /sdcard/DCIM/.thumbnails/, which again I have already deleted several times.
As a small note, I got a response from a guy in another forum who said he had the same problem, and fixed it by deleting the directory /sdcard/android/data/com.cooliris.media/cache but personally I don't even seem to have the folder /sdcard/android.
Also please forgive me for posting this in the general forum and not the HTC Desire forum, I do this because I feel like this is more related to the android OS than the phone itself.

Today I spent ages sorting out all my pictures on my computer then loaded up Zune and told it to sync (I have delete from phone option disabled in Zune)
Off it went then I noticed it said it was deleting from phone arrrghh
I stopped the sync and checked the phone and yes it has deleted all the pictures (luckily I have 90% of them on my hdd already) but is there anyway to recover the ones it deleted?
And why did it delete them when I had the option disabled?
My case is pretty different from you,but I just want to let more people know the issue of WP7.
actually I tried to add a folder into my device, however, once everything done. I enter the pictures hub,i have found my folder there, however, all the pictures in my camera roll disappeared, but luckily i jump back to the menu and choose DATE,i can find my camera roll pictures there(it is not deleted, but disappeared).weird...god damn WP7...
This situation is pretty random...now all the pictures is back to my camera roll again,it has happened 3 times on my device.oh my god....

Is it Samsung Focus with sdcard?
That's why I started using skydrive or whatever it's called to upload all pictures I take to a private online album. It's great because it just happens. You don't even know it's doing it.
Thought I would warn a few fellow wp7 users about this one I just tripped over:
It’s to do with renaming your phone and Losing ALL your photos synced on your PC
Steps
1) Set up your phone for the first time with name test1 on Zune
2) take some pics
3) sync with zune
4) check you now have c:\users\(username)\pictures\From test1\camera roll\
5) Reset phone
6) Set up your phone on Zune and name it test2
7) take some pics
8) sync with zune
9) check you now have c:\users\(username)\pictures\From test2\camera roll\
10) now rename your phone to Test1
all your photos you had stored in folder Test2 are deleted without notice.
My entire collection was deleted yesterday when I renamed my phone to an older name that already existed in my pictures folder. Fortunately I use Home server to back up so I had everything on back up.
nice bug though and will make a few ppl cry when they lose every picture they ever took,
I'm not sure if this happends in previous versions of zune.
Boysie
Werent the pictures still on your phone and transferred to the new folder?
Sounds like it recognises that youve wiped your phone and thus wipes what it has.
But either way, it should prompt you that its about to delete photos

And if they are not?
If you're like me you phone has been reset a few times and then lots of pictures and a few diffrent names used.
then one day you relise you can rename your phone and doing so deletes the pictures with out prompting on your PC irelevent if the phone has any or none!
Not a good situation to find your self in.
Obviously the only story is backups from there on and not every one does this, in my case I was lucky
Thoses less computer savy wont even know whats happened to their pics as they simply disapear!!
This one just bit me
In a perfect storm of circumstance, I just lost every picture I had taken on my HTC Titan I got in November, mostly pics of my now 9 month old son.
I was able to recover some files using Recuva software but none of the pics will open (aparently corrupted) even though recovery prognosis was listed as "excellent".
I am not happy...

Did you not allow them to sync to your computer or with SkyDrive?
Volume Shadow Copies, people. Best resore/undelete-type feature available for Windows that I know of, yet so few people seem to use it.
Right-click the folder that should have the files, and select the Previous Versions option. Works on NT 5.2 up (Server 2003, Vista/Server 2008, Win7/Server 2008 R2, and I think also on Win8). Requires that VSC (which are created at part of the System Restore feature) be set to create for personal files (not jsut system files), and the Windows Service for them not be disabled.
Saved my butt multiple times.
Ok so I have a mystery to solve..
I took a pic with the stock camera on rom 6.3.6 earlier tonight. For some reason the pic before it and the pic after it saved into the Gallery, but not this VERY IMPORTANT pic. The pic did in fact take successfully though, I looked at it on the phone after taking it and saw it had shot successfully. But it's not saved in the Gallery. In my mind, though, I'm thinking that even though it might not have saved properly in the Gallery folder or whatever, that it must be still held in some temp memory or folder, given that it did in fact display on the screen..and that as long as I don't turn off the phone, it must be in there somewhere still...
So you xda sleuths..any ideas where it might be stored? As I said, this pic is VERY important and I'd really really like to recover it. I'm scrounging through every folder however small with Root Explorer right now trying to find it..
If it's there it will be in dcim/cammera/
That would be where it was stored if it was saved to the Gallery, right?
Where are pics stored in the interim ie between the taking of the shot and then saving it there? While it's being displayed briefly on the screen?

I have had this problem multiple times acrobat69.
I have had to play with the OC speed and vsel - 800/64 seems to work the best for me for camera and video camera.
If I go more .. or sometimes less I get things lost, or lock up.. and just not work.. sometimes crash the phone.. this is on 6.3 rc3 - I have not upgreaded to 6.3.6 yet.
James
Hey James fwiw I've found 6.3.6 really stable for the most part. Its not that the camera crashed, it just didn't save that one time for some reason.

Is there a grey icon with a ! in the middle of it? Use the search button on this General forum a look for my thread called Failed to read/write on sdcard. It should help out with the cause, when and solution to get your picture back. I am mobile so I can't link it for you, sorry.
Hey acrobat69,
Did you try importing the pictures using Motorola Media Link? If you are sure that the pic still exists on the sd card and you did not see the error message "Low system memory" (which is when pictures generally do not save) you should try importing pics with the media link. Or, if you think you have deleted the pic accidentally or something of that scenario, try "Recuva" for windows, restores pics from sd cards, if deleted accidentally. Hope you find the pic!

Try downloading QuickPic from the market too. I use it as my gallery. In fact I have completely deleted my gallery.apk. QuickPic will scan your entire card for media files as long as there isn't a .nomedia file blocking it. Might be easier to find out where it is being held, if at all.
Much thanks to everyone who has tried to help in this thread, some really good tips, all of which Ive tried, including Recuva.
Woodrube I did the thumbnail thing and although I gained back two other pics I previously couldn't see, alas neither of them was the one I needed.
I did notice that there were more than 2 thumbnaildata files as you described..one was big like 400+kb and the other two were identical sized, 4kb. The two at the top were time stamped right about the time that I know I took the lost shot, and the third 4kb was located down towards the bottom, with a time stamp of just 2 minutes before the other two. I deleted all 3, but now I'm wondering if maybe I goofed there. Actually..just typing that out sounds like I did goof, majorly.
Maybe I'll try and recuver that third thumbnaildata file and unmount remount..damn hope I didn't screw it up
ETA: I did use Recuva and returned the 3rd file I was nervous about. It was actually called image_last_thumb and I guess I deleted it because it looked sinister being at about the same time stamp of my "issue" and also because I was working on this at 3 am and not thinking straight. At any rate, no change even once I returned it to it's proper spot. My image is lost, I think.
On the upside, I too have to recommend QuickPic. Really like the speed of it and it seems to be more stable, so far. Thanks Woodrube!
Q Pic not in gallery so where is it
None of the above, Kenny. In fact, your dash work is exactly the kind of thing we want to highlight in the Gallery.
<snivelling excuse>Weve been working hard on a new release, and support, and the Gallery has not been getting any love. </snivelling excuse>
Please email a link to your clip, and Ill get it into the list for the next Gallery update.
[SOLVED] "Photo Settings" app by infinity8 trapped my photos, any way to save them?
I have this app called "Photo Settings" store some of my photos. All of them are 8MP photos 3264x2448.
http://www.windowsphone.com/en-US/apps/e88ce04d-ff1e-490c-86b8-66beab519c46
Viewing the thumbnails of the photos in the album work fine. But when clicking it to view the whole picture, and more importantly, giving me access to the export button, crashes the app.
It does not crash when the photo is smaller in size.
Is there any way to get my photos back other than waiting for an update of the app?
My device is an HTC Titan which cannot be interop unlocked right now to get filesystem access, and from what I know, even if interop unlocked, the isolated storage of the app is encrypted, right?
Are the photos not syncing with Zune?
Ah apologies, the images are stored in the app's file storage not in your media library. Then no. The app's file storage is isolated. So you'll have to wait for the dev to update the app.
Casey
Yes, you can do it easy. You will need any ISF access desktop app (search forum). Or you may use standard MS app called ISETool.exe (located at %ProgramFiles\Microsoft SDKs\Windows Phone\v7.1\Tools\IsolatedStorageExplorerTool), it came with WP7 SDK.
Command line should be: ISETool.exe ts de e88ce04d-ff1e-490c-86b8-66beab519c46 [C:\Users\YourName\Pictures]
ts = take snapshot (i.e. download all ISF content for the app to desktop)
de = device
e88ce04d-ff1e-490c-86b8-66beab519c46 = "Photo Settings" app GUID
[C:\Users\YourName\Pictures] = you should specify snapshot location here
@sensboston: ISEtool and its ilk can only be used on sideloaded apps. Given that the OP gave a link to the marketplace, I'm guessing he didn't sideload this app.
@OP: Isolated storage is not automatically encrypted (though the app developer can choose to encrypt files before putting them there, which this dev *might* have chosen to do). However, accessing the filesystem does typically require interop-unlock, so that's probably not going to help in your case.
It's a pity, I didn't know that BTW, on interop-unlocked Focus I still can access any ISF using WP7 Root Tools.
P.S. @GoodDayToDie, what if I sideload any dummy app with the same guid? Have you tried that trick?
UPDATE: tried, doesn't work (as an update; reinstall is working but deletes old ISF)
Agh... yeah, I should have mentioned, do *not* try that! If you do so, the default beahvior is re-install (wipes the IsoStore). If you try to force an update instead of a reinstall, the phone won't permit it (if you're replacing a Marketplace app with a sideloaded one). Somebody at MS already thought of that trick. :-/
Don't worry, I've experimented with useless app, of course
Summarizing: he-he, here is another reason to sideload apps instead using marketplace
P.S. It's definitely app author's fault. WP7 data API's are such limited but Pictures is the one of most opened and well known. Nothing prevented the author to save captured images in the MediaLibrary...

Well, the point of the app is to hide pictures from the Pictures library...
I should have tested it more thoroughly before putting secret yet important photos inside
Have you tried to contact the author? Most smart app authors include contact info somewhere in the app, usually in an "About" section. Lacking that, you can always use the review as a place to leave feedback, though it's hard for the dev to respond.

It seems like a best advise in this topic. Contact author and ask about adding option to save pictures to SkyDrive or media library.

Yes there's an email to author link in the app, I emailed the author a few days ago, but got no reply.
I found what seems to be the author's personal email address by checking the author's domain information and emailed there too, still got no reply.
Does WP7 itself encrypt the NAND? When Riffbox supports the Titan, I can make a full NAND dump of the device through JTAG, are there any tools available to extract files from such dumps?

I don't know 100%, but may guess - it shoud be encrypted, same way as sd-card.
At this time, WP7 does not (claim to) support full device encryption. It's possible that it does so anyhow, of course.
It does lock the SD card, which means another device can't even see the data on the card, but JTAG might get around that.
One-star reviews + emails to the author explaining thr problem and the reason for the one-star review seems like the best bet for now. Lame, I know.
The author finally responded, he will be fixing the problems
