com.android.camera, "lost" SD card and picture viewer - G1 Android Development

Hey Folks,
Not sure if this goes into the developer part of the forum, but it's pretty deep, so I guess that's the spot.
Sometimes, when I shoot a picture, my SD card umounts, or at least the camera app says so.
Now, usually a reboot fixes things. Occasionally, I had to do fsck -a, which fixed things. Now, I don't have a USB cord handy and a strange thing occurred to me: When I try to view the shot picture via the picture viewer, I can see it perfectly but I get an error message that com.android.camera force closes. But the camera isn't launched - I killed it after the first two attempts via Process Manager for Root Users - what's up? Is the camera app needed to view pictures? That seems wrong...
Thanks for all the help I can get.

That is odd...
Do you have any themes or wonky mods on your phone? To answer your last question..yes, in order to view pictures, you need to have the camera app installed.
Which build are you running? Do you happen to have a vanilla Camera.apk handy to test if something strange has happened with the one present on your device?

ADP1. Nothing else, every app is standard, although I have used the SnapPhoto app occasionally. Hm, ok, I'm half at-ease now that I know that the camera process isnt' some kind of virus.

Camera.apk is vanilla ADP1. It's really strange. Could my SD card be broken? Although, when uploading stuff from PC, playing MP3s, nothing like this seems to happen.

Ah, thanks. I've got SanDisk 16 GB category 2. I'm getting a replacement tomorrow and post the results in this thread. Though I'd like to upgrad to Cat 4 if they let me. I heard apps launched from SD card should run faster then.

I am having pretty much the same problem. I can't view any pics on my phone, although they show up on my computer when I mount the camera to my computer. All I get is a weird icon in place of all the photos. It even tells me how many photos I have in each folder, just no thumbnails shown. When I try to view an individual picture it says "The application Camera (process com.android.camera) has stopped unexpectedly." And I have to force close.
When I try to take a photo with the phone it says I need to insert an sd card to take a picture, but when I look under storage it shows the sd card fine.
I am running JF's RC30 1.41 with the BUUF theme, although I don't THINK that is causing the problem. I'm pretty sure it worked fine until the other night when I tried to take a photo with the battery really low and the phone shut down on it's own. However, I went into the card and deleted the jpg files that weren't showing a thumbnail picture thinking that would solve it, but no dice. Any thoughts? Is there a way to just re-install the camera app? I usually use SnapPhoto but the same no sd card message occurs with both camera apps.

I reported this issue to Google here:
http://code.google.com/p/android/is...ID Type Version Security Status Owner Summary
Their official position is "There's been some significant improvements in that area that will be in a future release." Hopefully, this is included in RC33 just coming out, even though it has not been mentioned so far.
My interim solution was to use a different card (my trouble card was a SanDisk 8GB). I used a 2GB for a while with no problems at all, but I have been using another 8GB car for a week and have not had any trouble. I'd recommend a Class 6 card like the Adata I just got.

i noticed when i remove the camer.apk i lose the shortcut to the picture viewer and the shortcut when long pressing the home screen to add a wallpaper. after removal the only option is wallpaper gallery

Just an update. I don't know why I didn't do this sooner, but after removing the bad .jpg's from my sd card I finally rebooted the phone and I now have a working camera and I can browse my pictures. So anyone else having problems, check your picture folders for files that won't show a thumbnail and remove those. See if that helps. Just remember to reboot your phone afterward.

If the thumbnails have become corrupted then that can cause crashes. Delete thumbnails so it can catologue all the picstures again

I'm terribly sorry but I forgot the promised update to this thread.
They gave me a replacement SanDisk SD card at fnac without much of a hassle and after the phone had indexed the 2200+ pictures on the phone, everything was smooth. I don't have camera app crashes at the moment.
My SanDisk ist 16 GB Class 2. Lots of thanks to funbacon!

[Q] Pic not in gallery...so where is it?

Ok so I have a mystery to solve..
I took a pic with the stock camera on rom 6.3.6 earlier tonight. For some reason the pic before it and the pic after it saved into the Gallery, but not this VERY IMPORTANT pic. The pic did in fact take successfully though, I looked at it on the phone after taking it and saw it had shot successfully. But it's not saved in the Gallery. In my mind, though, I'm thinking that even though it might not have saved properly in the Gallery folder or whatever, that it must be still held in some temp memory or folder, given that it did in fact display on the screen..and that as long as I don't turn off the phone, it must be in there somewhere still...
So you xda sleuths..any ideas where it might be stored? As I said, this pic is VERY important and I'd really really like to recover it. I'm scrounging through every folder however small with Root Explorer right now trying to find it..
If it's there it will be in dcim/cammera/
That would be where it was stored if it was saved to the Gallery, right?
Where are pics stored in the interim ie between the taking of the shot and then saving it there? While it's being displayed briefly on the screen?

I have had this problem multiple times acrobat69.
I have had to play with the OC speed and vsel - 800/64 seems to work the best for me for camera and video camera.
If I go more .. or sometimes less I get things lost, or lock up.. and just not work.. sometimes crash the phone.. this is on 6.3 rc3 - I have not upgreaded to 6.3.6 yet.
James
Hey James fwiw I've found 6.3.6 really stable for the most part. Its not that the camera crashed, it just didn't save that one time for some reason.

Is there a grey icon with a ! in the middle of it? Use the search button on this General forum a look for my thread called Failed to read/write on sdcard. It should help out with the cause, when and solution to get your picture back. I am mobile so I can't link it for you, sorry.
Hey acrobat69,
Did you try importing the pictures using Motorola Media Link? If you are sure that the pic still exists on the sd card and you did not see the error message "Low system memory" (which is when pictures generally do not save) you should try importing pics with the media link. Or, if you think you have deleted the pic accidentally or something of that scenario, try "Recuva" for windows, restores pics from sd cards, if deleted accidentally. Hope you find the pic!

Try downloading QuickPic from the market too. I use it as my gallery. In fact I have completely deleted my gallery.apk. QuickPic will scan your entire card for media files as long as there isn't a .nomedia file blocking it. Might be easier to find out where it is being held, if at all.
Much thanks to everyone who has tried to help in this thread, some really good tips, all of which Ive tried, including Recuva.
Woodrube I did the thumbnail thing and although I gained back two other pics I previously couldn't see, alas neither of them was the one I needed.
I did notice that there were more than 2 thumbnaildata files as you described..one was big like 400+kb and the other two were identical sized, 4kb. The two at the top were time stamped right about the time that I know I took the lost shot, and the third 4kb was located down towards the bottom, with a time stamp of just 2 minutes before the other two. I deleted all 3, but now I'm wondering if maybe I goofed there. Actually..just typing that out sounds like I did goof, majorly.
Maybe I'll try and recuver that third thumbnaildata file and unmount remount..damn hope I didn't screw it up
ETA: I did use Recuva and returned the 3rd file I was nervous about. It was actually called image_last_thumb and I guess I deleted it because it looked sinister being at about the same time stamp of my "issue" and also because I was working on this at 3 am and not thinking straight. At any rate, no change even once I returned it to it's proper spot. My image is lost, I think.
On the upside, I too have to recommend QuickPic. Really like the speed of it and it seems to be more stable, so far. Thanks Woodrube!
Q Pic not in gallery so where is it
None of the above, Kenny. In fact, your dash work is exactly the kind of thing we want to highlight in the Gallery.
<snivelling excuse>Weve been working hard on a new release, and support, and the Gallery has not been getting any love. </snivelling excuse>
Please email a link to your clip, and Ill get it into the list for the next Gallery update.

CM 7.2.0 RC0 observations

When installing 7.2.0 RC0 through OpenRecovery, it says it is installing 7.1.0. Didn't know if this was an oversight or not.
I have been running it for more than 24 hours. The batter seems to drain. The camera still freezes. It was doing a weird thing on first boot up. The setup wizard would run, then it would pop up again, and then fc. I had to reinstall, and wipe data again and it started working.
It seems to lag sometimes but it is moving in right direction with this CM7 compared to CM6.
Everytime, I install the updates to 7.2.0 RC0, the screen comes up to choose between Setup Wizard and some app.update.provision (can't recall exactly). I choose the Setup Wizard, run through it, and right when I finish the setup, it comes up again to run the setup. I start it over again, and it force closes. Should I be selecting the Setup Wizard and selecting the checkmark to keep the other instance from running? I am confused why this is happening.
You need to post this cm7 thread.

Sometime last year the board set up rules for posting in the development section (to cut down the spamming of threads under development). Basically you need ten posts. However for members that joined be fore a certain date (seniority) the post count was waived.
I have two other observations but really it deals with the Milestone period, regardless of the stock rom, CM6, CM7, etc.
For some reason, from time to time, when I am doing things like taking photos, or copying files via USB cable to the SD card, when the screen times out, or goes to sleep, it will not come back on. It will just display the lights on the search, home, etc buttons but the screen stays black. I figured it out that it is the SD card causing this. I pull the battery, reboot it and it works fine.
Another issue and this relates to issues I have had since updating from the stock rom to either CM6 or CM7. I get a lot of FC errors and it mainly has to do with the taking a photo and all of a sudden the force close comes up. I force close and then it again is a lighted black screen and nothing but the display lights at bottom on. It isn't exactly like the above issue since this time I can do things like hold down the Home button and it shows the recent apps and I can select one but then it force closes. I really like using the camera and with all of these updates, the camera is rendered useless 75% of the time.

Yeah, it is difficult when you want to actually help out the development community but, I am only 4 posts away from getting there. Oh well, I understand and would enjoy the lack of spam postings.
New update is working much better. I wonder if anyone knows of a good sd card chkdsk. I have used the OR one nd it fixes it but if I write the log to the sd card and rerun the scan it is corrupt again. Wondering if there is a good chkdsk tool avail
Tried using a Class 6 SD card? It just might be less prone to corruption...just my two cents
I didn't know there were "Classes" of these cards. Wondering what the difference between a Class 10 and Class 6 is. I noticed on the SD Card that came with the XT720, it appears to be a generic one. I wonder if buying a kingston, PNY, samsung would be better than the generic one and resolve some of my crashing utilizing the CM6/CM7 builds with the camera.
The advice on this to break sdcard and get new one the one it came with is junk!
Sent from my Milestone XT720 using xda premium
I think a lot of us had the experience that it crashed a lot taking video even on stock 2.1. Taking pictures and video push a lot of data onto the card fast. The class of the SD card measures its read and write speed. Mine came with a class 4 card and used to crash a lot. Once I replaced it with a class 6 it stopped crashing (currently I use a class 10). An interesting variable here is that the classes are supposed to record sustained write speed, but in testing my card I found that my "class 10" can only manage a brief burst at class 10 speed before slowing down a lot.
Unfortunately, there's supposedly also a different bug in our kernel that some of the newer and bigger cards might suffer from. Nadlabak made a mmcfix.ko that patches the kernel and fjfalcon's ported it into his CM7, but I don't have a card that suffers that problem so I can't speculate on whether mmcfix works or not. I've inspected the code for mmcfix and compared it with our kernel and it looks correct.
Higher SD card classes can manage higher write speeds, but the file system used by the SD card, as well as the sheer number of files on it, affect its speed and stability.
And yes, a good brand for an SD Card might have more write cycles available, and less prone to electronic damage during unexpected shutdowns/software crashes.
Music player error in cm7 7.2.0 rc0 fjfalcon
Theres another observation..the music player cause the phone to reboot either when it is in use or whether you've finished listening to music...help!? I think its a problem with music mod in cm7 for FjFalcon...

[Q] how to find a corrupter file in tablet?

i've returned 2 note pro's thinking they were defective and realising now that the issue of rebooting was due to a corrupted file in my system, i have identified it is one of my comics files i had stored years ago on cd disc, the problem is there are like 1000 comics i can't check each one individually.. does anyone know of an app or a way to scan the tablet to find the rogue corrupt file?
originally when it caused the reboot the comics were stored on my sd card, the second time stored in the device storage and third time in device storage again.. apart from checking one by one is there a short cut way that will tell me which file is damaged?
i know years ago i remember encountering one of the comics would not open that was the corrupt file however i cannot remember which one it was it was years ago i last checked.
A simple corrupted non system file shouldn't be causing the issue. However a simple look at file sizes may point to an issue, it may be more related to filename structure if very long or has non standard naming conventions not used in Unix.
If you have the files on cd and are moving over just move a portion over at a time to narrow the problem down.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-P907A using XDA Free mobile app
Connect it to a computer and let explorer search for 0kb files. Ignore the .nomedia and playlist files.
Any mediafiles that show up as 0kb are corrupt.

Thanks maybe it is a file name issue. Im definitely sure it's the comics as all 3 have rebooted constantly because of iti just cant figure out wht it is. Is a filename which is too long likely to cause reboot?
i know it's not a software or firmware issue per se but i can't figure it out what's causing the reboot. Whenevr i play videos and lock the screen it reboots but it's only after i transferred the comics over
What would be considered a non standard naming structure..it is baffling why it keeps rebooting im transferring the comics away now to see if it stops
Only alphabet, numbers, underscores and dashes should be used, spaces are not great(depends on what you are doing). basically nothing else should be used(there are exceptions depending on Unix version but this is Linux) or Linux will hate the naming convention. Dots are fine also.
Did you load a comic app to read these or are they just. Jpg or similiar?

I have about 80.000 pdf's and comics in one folder. ALL have spaces in the name.
Comics are usually in cbr, cbz (both are .zip variants) or pdf format. Can you honestly imagine having to load every single page in jpg? Lol.
Exclude the folder from mediascanner by dropping a .nomedia file in it, and scan the thing with Windows Explorer or Apple Finder for 0kb files. (regular search, in english the string is size:empty ) That should be more than sufficient.

Being unfamilar with how comics are stored is why I asked...
Spaces can be problematic based on operating system and interface, Unix nor Linux like them so I avoid at all costs. Just because an app allows you to read them doesn't mean it cannot be an issue.
Unix interpretes a space as space between commands when using command line, since OP problem may be when files are being read outside shot a weird combo is actually causing an issue.
When switching between Windows, Unix, VMS worlds and having them all need to read all files properly either from web servers being hosted on them or from applications being run locally, spaces are one of the biggest issues. That and forward and back slashes.

they are scanned comics from the 90s i had the stored for about 10years theyre .cbr files optimised for reading in comic apps like perfect viewer.
do you have any idea what is causing the reboot? ive removed the files now no more reboot..very frustrating.
f sake it seems the reboot is back despite removing all the comics...not as much as before only once since this morning howeve it is back..it didnt happen once when i got the tablet till up till putting the comics in..however i havent really been using the tablet since then watching videos or doing anything intensive tbh so it's hard to say the cause..do you think it's definitely a rogue app or firmware issue rather than hardware?
this is the 3rd tablet i have had the first one kept rebooting all the time..i updated to the latest firmware and disabled all the apps i could that i dont use.. on my replacement i kept it as simple as possible i kept the original firmware but did not disable any apps let it run as normal as possible but did add the comics in..in the morning it rebooted.. so i returned it. now this one is the third time and it's so annnoying i have to think that if ALL 3 are rebooting it cant be a hardware issue right? i cant be that unlucky that all 3 have hardware issues so surely it must be right to assume it is all firmware related etc?
it is such hassle doing factory reset each time sorting it out one by one filling in passwords etc.. that it doesnt look like i can resolve it now.. the comics are removed yet it still is rebootin for all i know the device would have reboot had i did more ram intensive stuff like watching videos..am i just going to have to accept it? being thankful it isnt a hardware issue.
ironically my second tablet didnt screen flicker when i was using the original firmware
Short of factory reset not sure how you're going to narrow it down to hardware/firmware or software.
If you removed offending app and comics completely and dalvik cache was wiped it eliminates that..
F sake i did a factory reset yet it is still rebooting it seems to be after ram intensive stuff this cant be right? It can't be hardware because all 3 have done it i just can't figure out what's causing it it has 3gb ram nd power saving is off why does it keep rebooting?
I think maybe the sd card may have some things in it from the comics but i removed the sd card and it still randomly reboots could my contacts crashing be the reason? I disabled contacts and contacts storage as i do not need itif idont it keeps bri gingup the warning unfortunately contacts has stopped.

im not rooted so cant do dalvik wipe. Wht on earth could be causing it?
like i said ithas been fine since i got it before i put the comics in i removed the comics factory reset and it keeps rebooting still what the hell i honestly can't figure this out all 3 did the same thing im about to give up
I'm not sure what you are doing after a factory reset but what I would do is remove any SD card and do a factory reset again. I would not allow restoration of any other software (when you get to the portion of setup where it asks if you want to automatically backup and restore day no) and I would simply run the device bare bones for a day or two without installing anything to rule out any application that I might be installing.

ok so i rebooted a 2nd time (jeez im getting fed up of this) and did not load the sd card just incase i also decided to set up a brand new gmail account so that it does not sync my contacts from the other google account in case that was the issue.
so far so good. i also formatted the sd card did not transfer the comics over and all is good.. now i do not know whether it is indeed the comics or whether it's because of my contacts storage on the other google account i originally used.. and i dont really want to test it to find out..originally when i used the previous google account and did not add any comics it did not reboot once.. so what's weird is after the first factory reset where i did not format the sd card as soon as i left it in the sd slot it casued the reboot later no matter what i did.. how the hell is this thing so sensitive that it reboots just by having the sd card in..its like there's a file in there that as soon as u put the sd card in it causes a reboot.. remeber i removed all the comics from the sd card previously and the device and it kept rebooting inexplicably..
so right now i can't figure out if it's the fact i formatted the sd card and factory resetted it or whether it's because i use a new google account?
do any of you guys know how or why something as innocuous as comic books or remnants of it in the sd card is causing a reboot?
Given that the best way to troubleshoot technical issues is to approach things in a logical fashion it's important to isolate things one at a time. You can either do that by removing one thing at a time OR by starting fresh and adding things one at a time.
Just to explain my previous post . . . if someone asks the question at times like this whether or not it's a hardware issue the first thing I jump to is to yank the SD card, factory reset (personally I prefer a full wipe to stock using Kies and a factory image file) and then to NOT install anything on the device . . that right there is fresh out of the box experience with no external influences other than any updates to preinstalled applications. If a person has the same issues with that then there's likely a hardware issue. Sometimes I see people assuming that they're not installing software after initial setup when in fact they are when they opt into Google's automatic backup/restore feature during lyncing to their Gmail account during setup. Its rare but it happens and at that point they're not evaluating a stock out of box experience, obviously.
Back to your last post . . its possible that your SD card has a bad sector on it and the act of formatting it simply erased files that would otherwise be scanned by media server/index services which was causing the reboot. One way to rule that out would be to use a computer and try to do memory testing of the card.
It can be difficult to narrow these issues down, as said I would run bone stock with no sdcard for a few days not even adding a Google account or any updates and see what happens. Google updates have caused me a few issues on other devices when updating an app and needed reinstalled even to clean things up is why i suggested no updating anything. The system is not going to scan the sdcard or use data off it unless called upon to do so. Adding sdcard and if a problem still switch to another even.
Recently a friend had a card that would only read certain movie files and then if reloaded onto card wouldn't read it then. Card was found to be bad(well it works for some files anyways) didn't show bad sectors either.

thanks for the advice.
well guys the tablet hasn't rebooted since meaning it must have been something in the comics which as soon as you add it to sd card or device storage and even if you remove all it's contents still leaves a lasting effect unless i format the sd card and factory reset.. i hate factory reseting it's such hassle going one by one spending days trying bit by bit when it really should just work out of the box with no problem.. however this prob isnt a samsung fault it's a rogue file or something in my comics folder which i cant figure out what it is?
do you know anyway i can scan the comics folder which is now on my laptop so i can fix it for any errors?
i bought this tablet specifically for reading comics and now i can't haha otherwise it'll reboot like crazy.. yes i know it's not the tablets fault it's my comics fold3er of scans where i cant identify the thing which is casuing conflict.. would checkdisk work?
im just fed up because i returned my original black wasted loads of petrol going round tryna find the same colour elsewhere ended up with white returned that and had to travel other part of town for the last black one and in process it's ended up costing me an extra 15 pounds total to get it as i lost the cashback i got buying the original and returning it plus the petrol plus also by returning i lost a goodwill refund.
anyway on plus side this one has less backlight bleed so pleased with that however the screen flickering issue concerned me which the other 2 did not have.. i've updated the firmware so no more flickering during video playback however i dont use high brightness so hard to say.. i do see random flickers from time to time but i think it may be slight glitches so bit paranoid.
anyway what is the best way to scan my comics folder in windows to identify bad sectors or anything corrupt that would cause the note pro to reboot?
i dont want to put comics back on or even read from a separate sd card as the evidence shows it'll reboot again unless i get to the root cause.

[Q] [HELP] My ZTE Z730 is corrupting files saved to the SD card (among other things)

Dear helpful peoples and fellow forum-goers,
I have a ZTE z730 and I'm in need of your assistance!
Okay, for starters, whenever i install an app (from the play store) and it can be moved to the SD card, it moves it there all by itself... the problem with that is, for some unknown reason, that app will not work! It won't even open and instead force closes every time... if i try to move the app back to the phone (as soon as it's installed), it won't let me... (this, however, did work at least once...)...
The other issue I'm having is that anything, (and i mean ANYTHING) that i download or try to save to the SD card, be it from the browser, an app or even just backing up the apk file from an installed app (i use SuperToolbox+) gets corrupted... I use the app Stumbler a lot and if i download a pic or a gif off of that a notification pops up in my status bar and if i tap on it immediately and view it with the gallery or ESFile Explorer's image viewer, it is fine but it corrupts it after a short period of time...
Another example of this is when I download a video from YouTube using TubeMate... the video will get downloaded but will become corrupt and/or deleted within, say, 5 minutes! It will say that the download has finished but when I go and try to find/view the file it isn't there! (And, yes, I'm 110% positive that I'm looking in the right folder!)
I have tried factory resetting my phone and also formatting the microSD (which is fairly new and a class 10) and that fixed the problem for a day or two... but then it went back to being all wonky again... I have also tried starting my phone in safe mode and then attempting to save some images and that seemed to fix the downloading problem but not the app problem... and I'm running out of ideas...
Can anybody shed some light on what's going on or how to fix it? I've tried searching (on here and with google) for every sort of search string combinations to try and find an answer or even someone else who's also having these problems, but came up with nada... (I'll give you a list of all of the various strings I've tried if anyone is interested.) and I'll try any (serious) feasible suggestion you might have! If you need any other info than what I've posted, just let me know!
Thanks in advance for any assistance you guys might have!

Hi,
Have you try another MicroSD card to see if the issue persist on that card? If not, give a try.
If you have tried another MicroSD card and the problem still persist, might be the problem comes from your phone.
Unfortunately, i don't have another one... but i will try to borrow one from a friend of mine. I don't have to reformat the card, right?

Whelp...
I believe it's actually my SD card that is faulty...
I borrowed and old (smart)phone from a friend of mine and put the 32 GB card that was in my phone into it and when I tried to move an app to the SD card, (with my friend's permission, of course) it immediately borked that app... then I tried to install an app that I knew had installed itself to the SD card automatically on my phone (and thus corrupting it) and it (the Play store) gave me 3 different errors : First it said that the package had a bad manifest, then it said it couldn't parse the package and finally it told me that the app could not be installed to the SD card.
Being the curious little monkey that I am, I searched the market for SD card info tools and installed SD Insight. Upon running it, I find out that the manufacturer is listed as "invalid" and it records the size of the card as being 34 GB... also, the OEM/Application ID is shown as "Unknown: 0"... all of which make me highly suspicious...
I'ma gonna go do me some further research and see what the haps with this card... maybe see if I can return it... we shall see... In the meantime, thanks for your help! I'm just glad it's NOT my phone!
Can I get a mod to change the title tag to "resolved" (or what-have-you) or is this something I can do myself?
Live long and prosper all!

Opening photos via camera is buggy?

Does anyone else have an issue when they press the photo preview in the camera app where it stays pixilated for a while, the screen goes black, then I crashes back to the camera?
I also have the same issue if it loads correctly but I then delete a photo. It hangs for a while and does nothing. Sometimes it deletes, sometimes it doesn't.
Whilst I do like Google Photos, it'd be nice to change the default app to open with.

Yes, and it's horrendous. If you save photos to microSD and the image happens to be HDR, it can take 10-20 seconds for the picture to properly load (and reload and flash, etc, until it's done loading) from the camera app using Photos (I think it's faster if images are saved internally, but I really prefer being able to transfer my photos from device to device on microSD, and I often don't have access to the cloud to view uploaded photos). I have no idea why Google Photos is so slow, because if you take the picture and immediately open ANY other 3rd-party gallery app, the image is instantly viewable at the same quality, so you can't blame microSD speed. I think this is Android's doing, though, since it was also this way on my HTC 10 since the Nougat update (before that update, you could set the default gallery app to something else, so I always used 3rd-party galleries and had the luxury of seeing my photos instantly). Now, after taking a picture, if I want to review, I close the camera app and open my own gallery app. It's annoying to add so many steps, but it's still infinitely faster than waiting for Google Photos to load. Personally, I absolutely despise Google Photos and think it's a prime example of trash programming, but Android (which is becoming more and more a closed system every day) has spoken, and we have to use it, moles and warts and all.
I know other ROMS have worked around Android forcing you to use Photos from the camera, but I prefer to stay on stock for stability. But if anyone knows where in the code this is kept, I'd love to tweak the system to enable a different default gallery app. I just don't know where it is.

I want this to, would love to use my preferred gallery app. I tried removing google photos and use another gallery as default but then you can not view your photos from the camera app directly.
U have to be rooted so u can install gallery apk to system

As I said, other apps open the image instantaneously. Only Google Photos takes forever, so it's not the microSD speed.
I also save directly to the internal memory, so I can confirm, it's not an SD card issue.

FYI this problem or bugg, is from the Google Photo software, it's not a hardware issue, because even on my Samsung phone it did exactly the same thing, that annoying lag is terrible when switching between Camera and Gallery in the Google Photo App.
