Im sure that there are some awesome alternative kernels for cm7 here, but I cant seem to dig them up as there's multiple versions of kernels and Im having a hard time telling if they're gingerbread or not. Do you guys have any recommendations?

Sorry if this is a repeat thread. But how do you port a non cmda phone rom to a cdma phone?
You are better off asking in the irc. Since I am not familiar with the mes that great but the desire. I can't give all the info.
But in turn I do know you will need the kernel, libs, modules and probably a few other bits. Along with editing the build.prop.
The better question might be, which ROM are you hoping to port? If you're after CM7, that's pretty much done, and very well supported. If you're after MIUI, I think I'm about the only one working on a GB port, but it's at least still being poked at. Those would be the big universal ROMs I can think of.

Miui will be missing the same things. No AOSP based Roms currently have this functionality for us.
I'm currently in the process of beating my head against GB MIUI to get it to work. Thus far, I've had EXTREMELY limited success (I got it to boot ONCE). I've had limited help, but I could really use more from experienced ROM porters.
That said, yeah, anything CM7 is missing, MIUI will also be missing.
I've heard good things about the kernel JT1134 is working on, but I have no idea how far along he is, and how easily it will be tied into CM7 (and hopefully, MIUI).
Bottom line: The functionality you want can really only be found in a TouchWiz ROM. If you're after MIUI + Functionality, consider trying MIUIWiz.
Hi, I have a rooted Evo 4G, with the rooted 2.3.3 rom on it, and I have been looking for a new kernal. I have tried many, and every single one has hindered one vital aspect of the phone (White camera screen, No Sound, ect.) And I have searched for a comprehensive list of all the kernals, but every link I found was dead. All I care about in the kernal, is if everything works just fine, plus, 720p fullhdmi output, and netfilter for the wireless tether. If somone could please send me a link to a good one, That'd be great!
(oh, and I think I know what I'm talking about, but please, correct me if I'm wrong in my post.)
I have tried:
Netarchy toastmod: Camera problem, tried 3-4 versions.
Freedom (idk the rest): No sound, At all!
And I would like to stay on the stock(ish) rooted rom, if at all possible. I have tried CM7 and Fresh, but I keep coming back to the stock(ish) rom.
I don't ever run Sense, so I'm not really familiar with Sense kernels. The two you've tried are compatible (I believe) with what you're running. You need to be sure that the kernel you choose is for Sense and Gingerbread. You also need to know what you're hoping to get from a custom kernel & what features you need - such as cfs or bfs, havs or no havs, etc. This is a great resource with information about kernels: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=894880
It may not be up to date on available kernels, but it will help you understand the terms. Each kernel that you find might have different types, so if you try a bfs kernel and it causes problems then try a cfs. I suggest cfs anyway, unless you're mostly playing games or something. You can try asking in that thread, someone may be able to help you find a good kernel.
Just run through the Evo 4G Development subforum & try out the 2.3 Sense kernels once you know what you're looking for. Of course always make a nandroid backup just in case, and wipe cache and dalvik when you flash. What works well for some might not play well with your phone, so don't get frustrated.
Here's the Evo 4G Development section, just in case: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=653
Good luck!

I am new to flashing, but I want to get ICS on my Samsung Captivate which will not receive an official 4.0 update from Samsung. There are multiple options for ICS roms; the two I have heard most about are Doc Master's and Team Hacksung's CM9 (alpha). Please leave comments as to the general stability for the most up to date versions of the roms if you have experience with them. I am not interested in a buggy rom; i want one that is stable and that has most/all functions. I am a little bit confused on both forums for these roms how stable these roms are. Especially Doc Master's (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1462035). It does not list any specific bugs for the versions; does this mean everything works? I'm new to this so I am confused.
Also, if I would flash one of these ICS roms and decide it is too buggy, or I don't want it anymore, can I get back to my stock Gingerbread 2.3.5 (what I currently have). If so, how? Is the best way to make a nandroid backup of my stock rom (does that work for stock?)? If not, what is.
I appreciate your help.
Help please!
Bump. I really would appreciate any help.

ICS rom
I have flashed the 2 roms you asked about. I liked them both until I found Dark Knights ICS 4.0.4. Everything works and it is smooth and fast. I have tried others also, I also liked MIUI but Dark Knights is the best so far for me.
If you search XDA you will find the answers to your other questions. You just have to be willing to read a few threads. When I started I screwed up just about every way you can think of and someone was willing to help me out.
If you go to You tube and search for videos on how to flash your Captivate, many will come up (I am a visual person). Look for videos from Josh at Mobile Tech Videos. He knows what he is talking about and is a great help.
It would probably be better if you posted this question in the captivate forums.
I would post the link but I don't have the power to do that yet.
As for your question, I am currently running the CM9 Alpha version and am loving it. It has been my daily driver for quite some time and I would definitely recommend using this ROM.
All of your questions can be found in the captivate forums. You'll have to read a lot but it's better to read more so you know what you're getting yourself in to.
just curious.. hope this doesnt come across the wrong way. i realize everyone wants the latest and greatest, but why havent any dev's made a custom badass froyo based rom?
everything works, we have all the sources and bootloaders, etc.. and it can be made to look just like GB or ICS anyways with theming. it just seems like our devs would have a lot less difficult of a time getting things to work properly. i know there were a lot of difficulties faced when trying to get GB to work.. and still some features are missing
i do realize there are a few (3) modified stock froyo roms available. but nothing custom built straight from aosp. just an idea.. would anyone else be interested?

If a developer feels like running it, then it could happen but probably not. Now, somehow porting cm1 or whatever the first verson of it would be so cool, imagine telling people "ive got a pretty new phone running the software that started it all". Probably way more difficult then making ics for the infuse lol. Just based out of sheer curiosity.

It's not a bad idea, brad.
I've ran the uckh1 for a while. I used tibu to delete on extra un-needed like updater, music, social etc..it was pretty good and very responsive running stock and odexed.
There are a few things like battery management, memory manager, gtalk video that froyo does not support.
the infused 1.5 and cousins were pinnacles of their time...oc will also make it very snappy.
however, some app from market may not have all functions or display, so there is some drawbacks.
You can learn to theme...make it badass... and share?
Ya I'm by no means a developer. I can flash lol but coding is something I know NOTHING about. Not even a little bit

As a developer forum we are all about messing and trying new things. Once something new is released it is normally taken on by most of the developers. As this is not a site that focuses on Roms but on developing new and interesting stuff. You can see where it leads.
I have read many threads for kernels and roms alike that have own kernels. I am unable to find anything about SBC??? I used SBC on my evo a year back or so.. anyone know of anything? They helped battery on the evo and can only make this battrryboast even longer. Info?? Anyone?
