Smoothness in Honeycomb & ICS - Android General

ICS is a mix of gingerbread and Honeycomb and it has fully hardware acceleration unlike honeycomb which has partially.
I do wonder why navigating in ICS with a Galaxy Nexus isn't as fluid and smooth as let's say a Samsung Galaxy tab?
Here's an example on Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ftljZ9yGsiE
And if you have used a Galaxy Nexus or seen video with it, you can clearly see that when opening the app drawer and navigating in the OS isn't as smooth as Honeycomb.
Could anyone clear this out for me?

I noticed that too, even apps running on GB is much faster than ICS . There are still many performance tuning work to do I believe.
BTW: by default , GPU acceleration in ICS is disabled , right ?

[Q] Absolutely no HW acceleration in browser/720p Flash?

Hello!
I'm a happy SGS user with flashing addiction and coming here in desperate need of help for my bro. Long story short, my bro is a total newb in mobile phones and computers and after watching my browsing experience which is totally smooth he bought a i9023.
After I tried it, his browser feels like theres no acceleration at all. Even 720p is like 3fps. Exactly like SGS with eclair.
What I dont want is to flash his NS and bring him into the addiction. He only needs a smooth browser.
Please help
I dont have much experience regarding this, but here goes:
Do you have any example of what kind of site he is trying to access? Would be easier for us to test ourself.
And, try the skyfire browser, maybe it is a good solution?
Miren browser.
Stock Android browser has no hw acceleration. Sorry.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
Well I tried any website like gsmarena or xda, which is working smoooooth on my SGS?
Why you want me to tell you websites? Do you want to say your browser is buttery smooth like on my SGS? Am I missing something?
Is 720p youtube working on your NS? Its buttery smooth on my SGS with same hardware as NS and NS was supposed to be "pure Google experience" as in the best android experience among other manufacturers especially ones with SAME hardware?
Please help,
Luka

Use the browser I mentioned before, it's hardware accelerated.
Opera Mobile has full hardware acceleration. It uses a completely different rendering engine. It uses OpenGL ES to render pages. If you have flash installed you can select which flash objects will play on a page to save processing power and battery
+1 to Opera Mobile. Very fast browsing experience.

I don't know what you are talking about. Have you tried opera mobile on SGS? It is smooth as a smooth can be. Computer smooth if you understand easier. On Nexus S is definetely NOT smooth. Even 720p youtube is not working in opera mobile. Opera mobile is the best "smooth" browser I tried on Nexus S but is definetely nowhere near smooth. Try SGS Opera mobile and you will know what I am talking about.
I also tried Miren browser. Nowhere near smooth, opera mobile is more smooth. Tried even on my SGS and Galaxy tab 10.1v, both nowhere near smooth. I dont believe it has got any kind of HW acceleration.
Beware, I'm saying it again: My bros Nexus S is completely stock, even root is not obtained. I want it to stay it like that, because everything works perfectly for my bro except battery life s*cks and browsers are nowhere near SGS-smooth with identical SoC!
I'm still searching for help!
Best Regards,
Luka
Stock Android has no GPU hardware acceleration, period. All UI elements including everything inside the browser is drawn with the CPU which obviously is quite ineffective. Samsungs Galaxy phones are the only android phones with GPU hardware acceleration. So if you want it there's currently no other way as to get a Galaxy S II with TouchWiz.
To me and a lot of other people its a bug, see here: http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=6914
Sadly Google thinks otherwise, closed the thread, effectively giving everyone a FU

Wow. The answer I was looking for. So the only way is to flash
Is there any ROM/Kernel with hw accelerated stock android browser? Or somekind of Galaxy S port of whatever?
Is CM7 here HW accelerated in browser?
Thanks for help!

[Q] GPU rendering

I saw in a google + thread that android, since 1.5 version was software rendered, would our little GPU be able to render some launchers? If yes, i'm looking for a method to enable it, I think our phones would be a lot smoother and less laggy (I overclocked a little time ago but i didn't saw any difference)
JPQ Firmware rooted firmware
VOODOO
G3MOD Kernel NON-OC
MIUI Theme
most people say our little g3 doesnt have a GPU :'(
well youll have to edit the elg.cfg to enable HW redering though
Thanks, Well I'm going to give it a try, but our little SG3 has a smll FIMG 3DSE GPU, maybe Tom3q OpenFIMG will help us to have better smoothness then
GPU Rendering is one of the reason of the importance to get Android 4.0 working on our G3, because GPU is used for smooth animation and very smooth luncher .

[Q] Video Acceleration in ICS

I'm running CM9 arcee SK3, and like all the other ICS roms, it doesn't have video acceleration. What I'm wondering is, what changed between Gingerbread and ICS that broke this?
Also, given that the Xoom is also Tegra 2 and it has an official ICS rom, is there any way that could be used to bring acceleration to the G2x?

so, in gingerbread (and all versions of android before it) all video was done by software. this makes it slow ALOT slower than with hardware acceleration. i wont get too intense with the reasons, but basically it lets the GPU do like 100 calculations at once (hardware) instead of 1 at a time (software).
This means that it is MUCH less CPU and GPU intensive to render video. So the developers of Ice Cream Sandwitch (Google, not rom devs here) decided to make it mandatory so that it could be heavily integrated into the phone. (making things like 1080p video recording MUCH easier with a higher framerate).
They also made all of the UI rendering need Hardware Acceleration. now, im fairly sure the developers got HA for the UI working on this phone by doing the equivalent of writing their own drivers (no small feat). however Hardware Acceleration for video still does not have these drivers. (and we probably wont be able to dev them up, being as Video Encoding/Decoding is much more complex then just rendering a UI).
Now as for the Xoom, while it is Tegra, it's a different version of the chip, and because of this nothing useful can be shared between the 2.
Now, if you want video encoding to be done the old way, there are apps from the market that do it, i know MX video player is one that has a software rendering option and i think there is at least 1 video recorder that does it by software. Either way, until we get hardware support, there are options.
TL;DR: Its not broke, its just new, and we dont have the drivers for this new 'feature'.
Yeah, it's not to fun. I cant wait till we have it going! Just bought an extended battery!

Mini-Review The Dark Knight Rises HD video

Hello all!
Here is my mini review of the game.
So the game is great...outstanding graphics etc. Things that need to be fixed...Performance. It is laggy and not only on the Note.
So if it lags on the GS3 then I expect an update to fix it soon...or at least I hope
Also, it wouldn't hurt if people actually moved their mouths during cut scenes!
Anyways, I hope you enjoy it.
Dont forget to watch in HD
The sixaxis touch profile is attached to the post as well. Stock DPI.
Regards
ive got this game on my gnote using the miui rom but its extremely laggy even if im oerclocked to 1.6 Ghz
MIUI is based on CM9/AOKP not Samsung ROMs correct?
If so, that is normal. Currently those roms cannot match the speed of Samsung ones specially since the kernal I am using has an overclocked GPU.
I am a CM9 fan from my Captivate days but for the NOTE, it is still not on par sadly.
Running 4.0.4 Classic rom with Notecore v7 EX
This game lags terribly and heats up the phone so much near the camera area, its crazy...
Tested it out on my wives Ipad 2 and it runs like a dream, looks better and also sits in multitask area and opens again no problem, why the hell with a 1.6mhz dual core super machine can we not get it to run anywhere near as good as bloomin god I hate apple, but they always get it right
Is not optimized for android. Check the GS3 having the same lag. If that one with a quad core and faster GPU cannot handle it then you know is the game. I hope Gameloft fixes it soon though as the lag does take away from the fun :\
my CPU is ocd to 1.6 and GPU to 400mhz (notecore v7, cleanote 3.1 rom), still laggy as hell. spent the last hour to tweak the setting using chainfire 3d, trying different plugins. and it seems better, but maybe its just a placebo effect.
def, need an update for performance...
I dont even try with chainfire. For now, Notecore is as good as it gets. The only thing that made me smile was seeing the GS3 with the same issues...a little bit of hope I mean, it still plays fine but I rather wait and play it better...hopefully.
To be honest even my newly updated Lets Golf 3 lags like hell, even though im OC'd to 1.6 with Notecore, I suppose its down to the shear size of the screen the graphics are having to push too.
Not sure these huge 3D games are ever going to run well on our notes
Nova 3 , Mass Effect 3 , Real Racing 2, etc..all run super smooth. Have you tried those?
Also, is screen resolution not size that matters.
What ROM you using?
Sent from a galaxy note far far away
Clean Note latest.
Aha, used to use clean note, was fantastic, will return to it
Sent from a galaxy note far far away
Sweet. Post back if you can, to see if you got some improvement.
Tried Cleanote 3.1 and Classic also tried stock ICS and GB still all lag pretty bad...
Then I stumbled across this rom
AniDroid-N7000 ICS ROM
This game certainly runs the smoothest, with a few lags but not as bad as the others i have tried, also tested Lets golf and it runs superbly smooth, not sure what he has done with this ROM, but it works for me.

agreed. what dev's do is just port the game over to android instead of starting from scratch thus giving android devices a bad name if the game does not properly run on android platforms. A quad core SIII should be able to handle this game with no lags or whatsoever. The galaxy note is not far behind the SIII so we should be able to play the game smoothly, a few fps drops is acceptable

Did you try the OCed kernel with Cleannote ?
I have tried that ROM you mentioned and the performance was not close to CleanNote with the OCed kernel in any of the highend games I tried before.
Its weird I tried Cleanote last night with OC Notecore EX ver 7 and this game ran exactly the same as when I tried it with Classic ROM with the same Notecore.
Now this morning i am testing AniDroid-N7000 ICS ROM and my findings are very much better, cant explain why, would love to know. I can actually play this game now and enjoy it, Ok its not quite as smooth and nice as the IPAD version but then thats not our Notes fault I guess, its down to the production of the game on Android, would love to hear others experiences with other roms.
Another point with Dead Trigger I was finding graphics set to high I would occasionally get screen freezes, but with the AniDroid rom it runs smooth, not had a screen freeze.
That is very odd indeed. I just played Dead Trigger for a while yesterday with the very high settings (Tegra 3) without a hiccup. In fact, that will be my next video
Gotta love how everyone's experience can be so different even with the same phones.
What OC settings do you use ?
I just leave Notecore defaults. Sometimes change to pegasusq maybe but everything else I leave as default for the OC kernel.

[Q] Android 4.0.4 vs Android 2.3.5

My Question is why does decent games lag in android 4.0.4 And On 2.3.5 they work fluid with no lag..
And the interface of android 4.0.4 works smoother and 2.3.5 interface lags...? Why?
I think that would depend largely on which rom is being run and what performance settings are active. In a general sense though, ICS has more features added and an improved UI when compared to GB, and may result in lower peformance.
Perhaps another user can give a more technical explanation though.

You are right! I have tried some build.prop editing and some lagfix and gameboost apps. Interface became a bit just a little bit laggy but usefull. and gaming was just fluently. The ui sucks al the phone performance in apps... thx btw
