Anybody know how to prevent phone reboot? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I have Nexus S and this doesn't happen a lot but about every month or so my phone just reboots itself. I know why this happens, but I wanna know If I can prevent it...
I know this sounds stupid but I am hoping that I can prevent it... I'm not rooted or anything so I can't do anything that has anything with rooting.
Thanks

More often then not it has to do with some sort of memory leak, and your ram bleeds out so the phone reboots. Can be caused by almost anything, system apps, user apps etc. Also, how long is your uptime on your phone? The longer its on typically the lower the available resources.
Follow the leader @corythug

Um not mor than like 2 weeks... Also when my Nexus S booted up, it randomly rebooted itself again which was kinda weird... Any suggestions?

I suggest you to wipe everything in CWM and reflash the stock rom.

Leave it alone. You're much better than anyone else here who has this happening almost every day LOL
I suggest rebooting every week or so just for the sake of preventing it. But no matter what you do you'll get a reboot eventually. Maybe get an app that forces a reboot at night everyday. But seriously if you have an up time of 2 weeks than that's very good

i generally try to reboot manually once daily, it keeps the phone speedy and gremlin free

Thanks everyone! I was worried that I have to wipe my phone! I'm glad that there's nothing wrong with my phone!

Its definitely not a problem with your phone! I would suggest actually rebooting everyday or week rather then preventing them though.
Happy new year to you!

Glitching since rooting

Hi guys Yosif here I could really use some help here I rooted my phone a couple mouths ago with super one click everything went swell until lately my phone keeps stuttering and resetting itself (not often but still ) and my camera constantly fails T-Mobile contacts backup is constantly running I don't get it! What does this mean? and what should I do? Any advice will be greatly appreciated
Sent from my SGH-T959V using XDA App
Well you rooted...so the better question is what did YOU do? I don't see how you can say its glitching since rooting when you only started having these problems recently. what did you change? How about you try going into recovery and try wiping the cache and if that doesn't work try a factory reset.
Sent from my SGH-T959V using XDA Premium App
I tried wiping the cache the phone is running more smoothly but camera and other apps are still pausing and the camera still fails I did a fota fix and deleted a few apps ie inception, drive smart and Facebook, don't know guess I'll try factory resetting. I'll report back with the results. Thanks
Sent from my SGH-T959V using XDA App
if you're still on stock...you can try flashing the rom. check you the bible thread and see if one of those are the best options for you.
if not, there was a thread about a non-functioning camera a few days ago. might answer some questions:

I think that's your problem right there. I remember back when the phone was first released, that people were deleting that as part of the "get rid of bloat" phase, and running into problems as a result.
check out the noobs guide to odin in the bible. i would say to flash to krylons stock kb5.
Did the factory data reset now everything seems to be fine thanks for your assistance

"nonchalantly looking at the thanks button..."
And by the way, you CAN remove DriveSmart (or freeze it, rather). I've done it since KC1 and it hasn't affected a single thing. The camera bug would have nothing to do with that.
Aside from the bible, i have a tiny little eency weency quickstart guide heeeere.

Who doesn't wipe???

Due to the recent departure of a certain dev, I've become curious who doesn't do a full wipe before flashing a new rom and why you wouldn't. Is there some unseen benefit I'm unaware of?
I think the more important question is who doesn't make a backup? I've learned from losing stuff to backup anytime I flash anything. No matter how safe it should be.

I think the real question is why not ask this question without preloading it was drama? Don't even deny it.

Same with me. This is what I usually do. However if i do have issues arising, i flash again after wiping.

exactly. ive been doing this since my droid1 and hasnt failed me yet.
Wiping is honestly a pain, if I'm switching to a new ROM I'll wipe, but if I'm just upgrading then I won't. The only time I've hoenstly ever had a problem was wiping and restoring, I've had some weird errors when doing that (Home and Search button wouldn't function).
I thought on these phones you had to wipe it 20 times???
But I agree, if you are changing ROMS and not updating to a new version of the same ROM, you should wipe.
And Chingy took his ball to his own playground so y'all go play with him there.

i usually wipe every time i install a new rom. whether im going from 2.0 to 2.1 or rc1 to rc2. I always wipe just to make sure i dont have issues later

Would there be a way of asking it without alluding to some well known recent event? Anyone in the know is gonna make that assumption no matter how I posed it, so why not just be honest? That made me want to ask, after wondering in my own head for a long time, and I honestly would like to know why someone would flash one ROM over another. What kind of luck have they had? I've done it a couple times just being in a hurry and nothing pretty ever came of it. That's all. We've chatted in IRC. You seem like a good guy. Not looking for bad blood.
Every post I see from loon is condescending, spiteful, and instigative

Its a known problem with the G2x. Some custom roms and kernels help a bit. But its the main reason I'm ditching this phone. Its a great phone for those who don't suffer with this issue.

Luckily I've never had this problem ever. Apparently from what I've read around here and few other forums are that their are faulty devices and it takes a few replacements to get a good handset.
Also, maybe getting recent new made device would negate those bugs. Mine was manufactured 8/11/11 and not one bug what so ever.
Good Luck

Random reboots are almost always app related. What apps have you installed? I have been running the stock GB and versions of it with no problems whatsoever. Never had a reboot or any other problems.
This is a common issue with the G2x. When the phone came out a lot of people complained about it and got different phones but I suggest flashing a custom rom like Weapon G2x and it could help fix the problem. If that doesn't work replace it at tmobile or switch for a another phone.

Words with Friends on HTC One S is PAINFULLY slow

Has anyone tried playing Words With Friends on their new One S yet? It works, but as the title suggests, it's painfully slow when trying to return to the game from the ads after taking my turn (if there was a paid version I would buy it to avoid this). And it even tries to force close! I'm using the most recent version - 4.83.
Just curious if anyone else is having the same experience?
Thanks y'all.
It's probably an issue with the app on ICS rather than your specific model. I haven't played it yet on my phone but I remember even on my SGS2 it started to get annoyingly laggy!

Thanks unclespoon. I have to admit - I never considered for a moment that it was actually a problem with the One S. That phone RULES. I just wondered if others had a similar experience.
Hopefully it will get optimized for the One S and other ICS devices sometime soon.

It doesn't ever sort of stutter or time out on the way back in from the ads? Do you have the newest version of the app? Maybe I'll uninstall/reinstall?
Anyone else out there?
Try going to app info and clearing data/cache. Never seems to stutter at all for me.

Tried this. It's somewhat better, but not smooth. It was never perfect, but it didn't try to force close either. Got one more force close this AM after clearing the data/cache. Still stumped on this one.
I picked up the One S a few days ago...same issues for me, including the FC when it gets tired of waiting. Definitely not the phone--the phone is sick as hell. It was the one to finally knock my HD2 off its perch, and I haven't looked back yet (though I did keep the old girl as CM9 and ICS are still being developed at a nice clip for that device).

That's an interesting point that it might be that it's bad with ICS - not the phone itself (which rules).
Thanks!

Two hour battery life please help

I'm ruining stock ICS 4.0.4. Noticed yesterday my phone was really sluggish and battery life would go from%100 to dead in about two hours. I went into settings then apps and looked at my running apps and my phone was scrolling through all of my apps. I don't think that's normal. My widgets are slow to activate and my phone is slow to respond. Any help would be appreciated. Does this sound like a virus or a simple fix?

I did hear that from a friend and I didn't believe it...
Now I'm starting to believe...
Best way fresh install, format internal sd.
That way you know for sure if it's a virus or not.
Good luck!

That's not going to tell you if its a virus noob. It could be any number of things causing the slowdown. What are your friends credentials because if its not a background in networking security he's got nothing but here say. Unfortunately for you I am a security professional. The likelihood of a virus is slim to none. Its more likely memory issues some apps probably consuming more than its share.

Bad info and fear are not good input either. The reset would probably help but not because of a virus but freeing up tons of previously used space.

This is a good idea.
You may have a app wakelocking keeping your CPU running and not deep sleeping like stated above there is like a .01 percent chance its a virus.
Wipe every thing reflash ROM of choice let settle then install your apps one a time waiting a few minutes between them so u can see witch one dose it.
Read up on the wake lock thread and see what betterbatterystats tells you. Or you could just flash a new rom

Hey thanx to all who responded. I ended up backing up my phone and doing a reset. Lost all my sips but that's no biggie. Went back with sock ICS and all seems to be fine. Once again thanx for helping out a somewhat noob!
So just to see if I understood :
You are using stock but rooted (?)
And your battery last only two hours.
I had the same issue with a ROM. First you have to shut off al your radios, data, gps, wifi, bt... Just to be aware if none of these things that are draining your battery life.
Then you should try to verify your battery charger. There's an sticky here in the forum. And lastly you have to check wakelocks... There's a good discussion about that here also.
I know it's kind of disappointing at the beginning, but when you finally understand all the symptoms of your phone you will solve all the troubles really quick... It's like having a newborn baby, at the beginning you don't know why they cry but when you learn about them you can identify every "kind of cry".
Best regards.
