[Q] Forgotten gmail login and recovery mode does not work help! - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

okay so I have my nexus s and I flashed the new ICS onto it and it has been a bit dodgy, but mostly fine, nothing serious. My friend tried my password too many times so now it wants my gmail account login, which is not working at all, and I know it's been right, even tried changing the password on my google account and still nothing.
So I tried to put it into recovery mode to do a hard reset, but every time it does it flashes the blue android man (not little one with exclamation mark) then the screen turns black but my buttons are still lit up. Then after a few minutes, it just starts itself back up and I can't get it again.
I tried connecting to my computer to do something but I can't get into it so I can't turn USB storage on.
Is there anything that I can do to reset the phone even though recovery mode is not working?
thankyou heaps to anybody who has an answer or any suggestions, greatly appreciated.

I had the same issue with a different phone....after 24 hours the password screen came back...and let me re enter my p-word..

Use a PC to authenticate and make sure you're not using s two step authentication. If you can login on a PC but not the phone then you must have two step authentication turned on. Turn it off on the PC and try it again. Flash a new ROM from scratch and it should let you login.

thanks obsanity. I'll try taking off two step authentication. And so how do I flash a new rom if I can't put anything on the sd card? and then, how do I flash a rom anyway? and I don't think I rooted my phone when I put ICS on.

You might not need to. If your system boots just try to fix the login issue. If your system doesn't boot you'll need to open up the boot loader and flash a recovery which will let you mount your SD storage as USB drive. From there you can put a rom on it and flash it.
Checkout my links or other sticky posts on how to do that.

The stickies are the posts that remain fixed at the top of the page, you'll see they've got a little pin symbol on the left. It's a system for keeping useful information permanently visible.

Extremely frustrated, need some advice for PIN lock

I locked my phone a week ago (drank a little, was incredibly angry) and forgot the password the following morning. Tried every combination under the sun that was close to my usual lock PIN and had no luck. I read about the pattern unlock asking for a Gmail login, and I was never prompted.
I tried many solutions, including the ADB program but my phone was not set for debug. I decided to change my Gmail password online with the hopes my phone would prompt me, but no such luck. A day ago I found a program that would bypass the screen lock, but it had to be installed from the Android Market. Installation didnt work because I changed my Gmail password, but cant set it on my phone now.
I really dont want to lose my photos and data, it would be a huge setback and Im already having a difficult time with it.
Is it possible to install a custom recovery image WITHOUT losing all of my data, or will it wipe everything clean in the process? Are there any realistic options I have to be able to remove my PIN lock or recover my data?
I would really appreciate any help I can get, because it seems I have no other options left and Im left with a phone I want to throw in the trash.
You didn't say if you are rooted or not. If you do have root then you can probably just flash another rom and you wont lose anything. If you don't have root.. then I got nothing. If you don't already have a rom on your device but you are rooted you could probably find a app that would allow you to get right into your phones flash memory and put a rom in that way.
Also, pull our your micro sd card on there. If thats where all the data that you want to save then you could be in luck that way. You didn't mention where the data is saved. Pm me if you have any questions or you don't understand

Sorry, didnt think to mention those details. Phone isnt rooted, all data like photos and such is saved internally.
I never really looked into digging into the phone like this, but after I locked it I started looking at every possible option. Even sending the phone out to a data recovery specialist. Im basically at the end of a fraying rope, and it really sucks, Im so stressed.

So you tried your passcode those thirty times and then what happened? Nothing? I think that you should just keep on trying your passcode over and over again and maybe it will come up with you signing into your google account... maybe.
Data like photos, videos, files, etc etc are all stored on SD card (internal), except application data. Only application specific data like its configuration, etc go to internal partitions that get erased when loading custom ROM.
So your best bet would be to install a custom ROM and then get the data from your SD card. When a custom ROM says it is going to wipe everything, it means partitions like /system, /cache, etc, and not the internal or external sd card.
But for this you would need to be rooted. So try the one click to restore to stock (in one of the threads here). This is worth a try since this method should not clear internal SD card.
why dont you flash the community kernel giving you CWM, then flash a rom?

How can you do that if you can't access (get past the lockscreen) and don't have root? (honest question..)

Idk if you can get into download mode if you're not rooted.. never tried it.
If you can't get into download mode you might be able to do the stock reset. I would make that a last resort though, it will probably wipe your pictures.
You do this by powering down the phone and then using the three finger method, holding down the power, volume up and down buttons. Let go of the power at the Samsung logo and then it will boot into a green screen. From there.. you have to figure it out because I don't know what the screen looks like. I can't remember from all those months ago when the last time that I was on the stock firmware for a while.
Optimus is right....just pull the battery...put phone in download mode and flash community kernel...when it starts booting...3 button back to recovery...if you don't have a custom rom on your phone...when you get to recovery..go to apply update zip and select and flash it...that will give you green cwm ...then go to mounts and storage and select mount usb storage...you computer will recognized your internal memory then you just transfer another rom on your SD card ....unmkunt usb and flash like normal...hope that helps...

How do I put the phone in download mode? I know how to get to recovery mode, but not download mode (if they are different).
When I mount the USB storage, I can just pull everything from my phone?
You guys are a huge help!

Download mode screen has a small exclamation mark, something like in the pic I have attached. It is totally different than recovery. Recovery allows for a bunch of options that can be manipulated on the phone itself. Download mode allows phone to be updated only via a connected device i.e., a computer that pumps in data to the phone. By data I mean OS.
You cannot mount anything like USB storage in this mode. This mode is more like a mode that the manufacturer uses for automating initial OS onto the device, in a totally automated process. This method is also sometimes referred to as "restoring stock" meaning, restoring phone to how it was when out of factory.
Pull the battery....put battery back in...(first of all have Odin open)..hold vol up and vol down while plugging usb ...u should see a yellow android with a broom and it says downloading...on Odin you should see comm## in yellow if you are connected....download gtg ultimate unbrick and extract...on Odin click the pit button and go to where u extracted and double click on infuse.pit...then click the pda button and put the PDA file in there...and do the same for phone...hit start and your on your way back to stock

To add to this:
Since you seem to be new, try to ensure you don't disconnect the phone from the PC until this process is complete. And get the phone drivers loaded onto your computer before you start this process.
Most importantly, as mentioned above, open odin first, and then connect the phone in download mode for odin to recognize the phone.

I find it odd that you were never prompted to unlock with gmail password as well, it actually says pin lock, not puk lock correct?
Did you try changing your gmail password back to what your phone thinks it is so you can run this program you heard of, that might work right? Just thought i would throw this out there if your having toruble with the more technical solutions being offered to you.

Its the PIN lock, rather than a pattern or SIM lock. I did try that actually, but Gmail wont allow me to use the same password twice. I spoke with someone at Google who referred me to a specialist, and I will ask for their help on doing this. I was told by someone else that with the phone not seeing the correct password it will essentially be logged out, but Im really hoping that is not the case.

Pictures and notes are usually on sd card and facrory reset let sd intact. You can try first only "wipe cache" from stock recovery maybe helps.

Still cant get it to work, have been using my old phone.
How do I do a "clean wipe".
If I turn it on ,it goes to the unlock screen but wont unlock and the screen goes black but if I call the phone it goes through and the dial screen works fine.
I really need to get this working as I need the texts I have sent and received as well as everything else.
Can anyone offer any help or advice?
Biggest mistake to ever get a Motorola phone, should have stuck with Samsung.
i think ur blur launcher is having problem or u deleted it by mistake.
If any expert here makes a flashable zip of any launcher, or u can install it by adb
At this point I would recommended to reflash back to factory 2.3.5 using the fxz, and the update over the air afterwards.
Remember to always have a backup and use CWM in boot!
Follow this link and look at the instructions on how to flash the fxz: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1396650

Download "fxz" and "replace" files from Noob thread and flash it using rsd lite if its a software issue then it will be resolved if not i m afraid you will have to service it.
If you're using stock then you shouldn't have to FXZ your phone. With the phone OFF hold the up & down volume keys, and then press your power button. It should pop up the "Boot Mode Selection Menu" Release both the volume keys and then press the down volume once to highlight "Recovery." Then press the volume up button to start your recovery. Scroll to "wipe data/factory reset" using the volume down key and when it is selected press the power button. Then navigate to the "Yes -- delete all user data" using the volume keys (up or down) and press the power key when it is selected. After it has finished, it will show the first menu again. Then navigate to the "wipe cache partition" and follow the same steps as the wipe data/factory reset instructions. Once it goes back to the first menu after wiping the cache partition, then press the power button ("reboot system now" should be selected) and when your phone boots back up it will be like you just got it out of the box except you WILL still have all of your pictures and your videos.

are you rooted? if so you can reset then get all of your data back (I can explain how if you are)
If not, do you have usb debugging enabled? if so you can do a temporary root, just enough to dump your system so you can reset then restore your data the same way

Let's start here, try telling us exactly what happened and what you did to get yourself into this situation. For instance, are you rooted, running any custom roms, or are you on stock Android 2.3.6.? Which model of ATRIX 2: MB865 or ME865? Anything else you can tell us that you have done? The more information you can give, the better!

this would all be helpful. as long as he has usb debugging on he can use the root exploit to open things up enough to try pushing a launcher and if that fails dump the system so that data can be restored

1. Can you try bringing it up without the SD card? If you can, the card may be corrupted, may be need to put to a computer for fsck.
2. Can you connect to it via ADB? Then there are ways (google for exact command syntax: adb pull /data/data/com.android.providers.contacts/databases ... in fact pull out entire /data/data, you can extract all your contacts, sms, call log from there) to dump/restore your data.
Like i said a few posts up bud, follow the link i provided and flash the fxz. It will fix your issue. Your pics will remain on the sd card, but yes you will lose your texts. Your contacts are backed up by your google account.

I should add,the last app I installed was that Lookout Security app.

Never mind my last post, you need to be able to boot into a rom to use kdz updater, it's been a while since I had to do this kind of thing.
I'm pretty sure you only soft bricked your phone (i.e. it still turns on) and the only way, that I know of, is to use nvflash. I've had the same problem before, there could be many things that are causing the phone to not be recognized by your computer. Follow this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=17258229
when you plug the usb into your phone make sure the audio on you computer is loud enough for you to hear that "usb recognized" sound. If you don't hear it, or it does not get recognized, try using a different usb port on your computer, believe me that actually worked for me a couple of times. Also, make sure you follow the steps very carefully because if you use the wrong button combination, or release the buttons too early, it won't work.
I wish I could help you more, but that's all i've got.
Good luck, and if by any chance you get it fixed, don't try to root your phone using any root tools, simply nvflash cwm recovery and flash your choice of a custom rom, that will automatically give you root privileges.

every time i look at my apx driver it always tells me to troubleshoot but it always says driver not installed. ive downloaded the same driver in different posts just to make sure but nothing helps. Wireless shops are useless. I live in vegas and there isnt a single store with a person smart enough to figure it out.lol. ive given my phone up for days at a time to shops who brag about "WE CAN FIX ANYTHING" they lied. well i guess im going to search for a few more hours on here to get some kind of lead. thanks for the help. if you kknow anything else or figure something out i would appreciate the help.
Have you tried this stuff?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1619932
It sounds to me like your pc's jacked up the driver somehow. Try plugging in the phone with the battery out and holding all 3 buttons, go into your device manager and uninstall all the USB drivers. Then reboot and try following the apx driver installation procedure again.
Sorry if you tried all this stuff a million times already.
I would say the two things that I would focus on would be to first fix the drivers on your computer. I downloaded mine from the LG website. Next is to flash CWM Recovery so you can flash a rooted ROM to your phone. I would go back to the thread where you got the instructions to start flashing and ask the same questions but only after reading the whole thread. There the orig. developer might chime in and you'll have more specific answers focused on your specific issue.

well i have all the drivers needed. and the computer is fine but the phone is not. i mean the pc doesnt quite read the phone right. with that being said i dont know how to flash cwm recovery to a phone my computer cant read. im running windows 7 64bit and all my usb drivers work fine.
CWM = Clockworkmod Recovery (everyone remember this is a newbie).
Important question: Did you do a backup before making any changes to your phone?
Also, try this: remove your phone's battery for 30 seconds. Put the battery back in. Press and hold the volume down button, then press and hold the power button. Hold both buttons. First you'll see the white LG screen, then wait, when you next see the blue LG screen wait ONE second (no longer) then release the buttons. Tell us what the phone does then and what the screen says.
Have you tried taking out your SIM card and micro SD card?
Usually right after I take them out and plug in my phone while holding volume up and volume down... it usually works after that.
Yup, that's my problem. No matter how many USB ports I tried it still wouldn't read it until I took out the SIM card and micro SD ;p.
Try this on for size...

Sounds like you are having the same the issues i was having with my phone why dont you try this..... First you have to flash a custom recovery image for your phone, follow all the procedures exactly then once you have flashed your CWM Recovery ( i. e. Clockworkmod recovery) Once you have installed that properly, you can now flash your new custom ROM and that should help to fully reboot your phone back to recovery for you to start using again....... hope that works for you.......just as it did for me have a good one!!... :fingers-crossed:

He can't flash anything to his phone -__- that's the problem we are all trying to solve.
May sound stupid, but have you tried different cords? Maybe your USB cord is bad. Just a thought.

@op can you give us screenshots of:
A: what your device manager looks like when you plug your phone in not in apx mode.
And
B: When it is in apx mode.
To do this: right click on my computer>properties>on left hand side, click on device manager. Hit print screen, open paint and tell it to paste. Save and upload here.

well i brought it to two shops and were both unsuccessful. wireless toyz and smart fix. i have it back and it goes to the lg screen. and instead of the second it flashes from black to a very dim gray back and forth. when i hold the power button along with the volume down it does a master reset and i can press the home button then it takes me to a screen to delete cache partition and what not and you move up and down with the volume keys but i cannot select anything. i think i really messed my phone up.
Somehow you got stock recovery. Google for howbto do a master reset, on devices like the nexus tablet at my work there's a series of steps needed to do a full reset/restore. Just booting into stock recovery may not give you the option. As well, please post those screen shots as I said earlier, this way the issue with the USB can be troubleshot and maybe we can get you a fully working phone with CWM.

[q] nexus 5 bricked in first 4 days sos

Alright i got 6 hours before tmbobile store opens and i can HOPEFULLY get an exchange, but not banking on it. btw im new to rooting so i wasnt familiar with the process, but regardless i have hard bricked my NEXUS 5. Title says the problem. I followed wwjoshdew's guide to rooting on youtube, and rooted successfully. But i could'nt for the life of me figure out how to create nandroid. I ended up realizing i didnt download cmw recovery mode and downloaded it from the play store. the app took me to a button that said flash recovery and i hit it and my phone asked for permission from unknown source, i hit ok and it shut down, on 70% battery life. Not turning on please help
Try to boot the phone into bootloader mode. Just hold volume down and the power button. From there try to cycle to recovery. You use your volume down to cycle through the options and power but as select. If you can boot into recovery and have that successfully installed then you can erase your phone and try to power it on from there. If you didn't successful install the custom recovery then you'll have the standard Android recovery. You can erase everything from that too.
These phones are hard to brick and not be able to fix it.

Doesn't turn on dude. No matter what. I am new to roms but i know what a hard brick is.
You should really read the guides and stickied threads at the top of these forums. The guides are very noob friendly and you wouldn't have bricked your phone. There's one to reset your device to stock as well. There's really no need for this thread and on top of that there is a sticky that says no questions in the General forums.

Determine your phone is actually off. Plug your phone into charge, if a battery sign appears in the middle of the screen then your phone is off.
If your phone is off, hold down the volume down button with the power button to start the bootloader, press volume down twice and press the power button to enter recovery.
If your screen remains black and doesn't show a battery logo, hold the volume up, volume down and power buttons at the same time for a minute, then let go and hold down the power button. Which should hopefully start your phone.

You should have been around long enough to know that when newbies break their new toys they go nuclear and dismiss all the information around them.

You bricked a Nexus?
Hold down Volume Down, Up, and Power to get into fastboot mode. Restore from Factory Image.
Normally, to root a nexus, I fastboot Team Win Recovery Project.
Anyways what you did simply could not HARD BRICK the phone.

Do you have a link to the kernel you flashed? I think you done bricked it good.
Were you using this method?

If yes,I think then all Nexus 5 users should be warned about CF's autoroot issues, because I see more and more topics related to this issue.

I don't believe the issues you're seeing, appears to be failed emmc, is related to chain fire's auto root. Cf is probably the most popular method to root and it's a coincidence. I've seen these failures with other root methods too.
I think the op flashed a kernel not for his device.

I am not a developer so bear with me. I'm just a guy in mpls with a completely stock N5 from Google Play that encountered similar issue as the original post. There was no damage or water issue, or other problem prior to going dead. It had about 50% battery and maybe 15 minutes after reading an email it was dead when I looked at it again. It just simply turned off while in my pocket. I could not get it to power on or enter bootloader or a recovery screen. After a week of trying to charge via USB and the original wall charger and countless attempts to hold power and volume buttons without success, I decided to pop the back off and disconnected the battery. I put it back together, but that made no difference either. Google play will send me a new phone, but I'd like to get it fired up and extract the last week or so of pics. Any ideas? Again, I am a complete noob and this 3 month old phone has not been modified in any way, other than auto updates from Google play. Thanks for any assistance or guidance.

I'm afraid there's nothing you can do. It would have to at least get into recovery or bootloader to have a prayer.

Thanks - was just hoping it was not a hardware failure given the posts about difficulty bricking N5. Any chance if I bought a new battery that came charged it would fire up or replacing the motherboard an option?
p.s. I am not the original poster so not sure if I ticked someone off or not, sorry if I did. Just looking for assistance

It sure sounds like a hardware failure. Doubt a different battery would help. And don't worry about being the original op. This thread is old

I get the unknown device driver when hooked up USB to computer (QHSUSB_BULK). Think it is worth waiting a few weeks prior to returning it to see if there is a way to access the flash memory via a driver download? Searches for help showed similar unknown driver problem workable on samsung and HTC last year (QHSUSB_DLOAD)

No, you won't be able to. The memory doesn't mount like a sd card would. For the future use something like drop box or Google drive too backup your photos as you take them.

[Q] Trouble Unbricking

Hey all,
Recently took advantage of Google's 1 time replacement policy as my phone is completely shattered. Received the new one in the mail the next day, installed everything and transferred my data, then went to set the old one up to send it back. I decided to unroot and relock the bootloader, then I went to wipe data via TWRP (why I didn't flash stock recovery before wiping I don't know...) Unfortunately, I was rushing and managed to stupidly hit wipe everything, and I have no OS. The phone is soft bricked. Normally this wouldn't be too much of a challenge, but my phone also refuses to be recognized by my computer (Windows 7). The new one installs drivers and pops up perfectly, but the old one doesn't show up while in bootloader or recovery. When I try to run fastboot commands, any application I try says "Waiting for Device" (including the Kwongger toolkit unbricking setup).
Short explanation: I managed to idiotically wipe the OS, now my computer won't recognize it while it's in TWRP or bootloader.
Anybody have advice on how to fix this and flash a stock image? Should I risk sending it to Google like this?
Thanks for any help you can provide!
If you're worried about it, flash the factory image in fastboot. But I wouldn't worry too much. Google's pretty cool about flashing stuff to your phone.

How would I go about getting the file onto the phone (my stock backup disappeared from TWRP, forgot to mention that in the OP) if I can't connect to my computer?
Thanks for the reassurance - if I can't get it working by tomorrow I think I'll probably just send it in and see what happens.

Thanks for the advice - I tried it, but the phone doesn't enter download mode. It just enters the powered off but charging state (where the charging battery symbol flashes on the screen).
Additionally, when I launch the FlashTool, it says "LG USB/Parallel lock key is not detected" then sends me to a login screen (it appears this person had the same issue, but solved it without posting how to solve it). Any ideas?

There is a megalock dll in the crack folder. Replace the original dll with the one from the crack folder.
I wouldn't worry about flashing back to stock. Like said before, Google doesn't really care about what firmware you're running. You're not going to run into any problems if you send the phone back in its current state.

That fixed the issue with flashtool, but unfortunately something on my phone must be busted; it won't go into download mode. I tried my new one just to ensure the cable and port were working, and it went right in. I think I'll just have to send it in and hope they don't mind. Thanks for the help guys!
