You all know that we all use kies to connect net on computer through our mobile. But really I am just fed up of kies. Its nothing but a piece of a crap. I really cant believe how a well reputed company samsung gives such software to people. I use it to connect internet to computer via my mobile. But it takes a lot of ram of my pc. Also sometimes net get connected but sometimes not.
I want suggestion guys is there is any light weight pc suit like nokia which can be used to connect net to computer???

Simple job dude..
Get easy tether for android or get a phone like sgs2 or galaxy note that already has tethering facility built in...
On a serious note... Get easy tether for android
Tapashocked via my gt-I9003 with a random keyboard of my choice !
I think i9003 already has usb tethering connect to pc in usb development mode > on phone goto settings > wireless n network > tethering > tick usb tethering > a new network device will be there on pc and u'll be connected provided u have enabled data connection on phone. Theres another way also : if u have installed proper drivers, go to control panel > create new dial up connection > select i9003 modem & enter phone number as *99# > username password blank.
Also in the phone & modem options in control panel, select your modem(i9003) > properties > advanced tab > in extra initialization settings type at+cgdcont=1,"IP","yourapn"
Replace yourapn with the correct apn eg. bsnlnet for bsnl.
Now you can connect with the connection u created. Hope this helps.

I searched the Captivate forum to see if AT&T left USB tether enabled on the phone and couldn't find squat. I'm inclined to assume that they disabled the capability unless you paid the extra $20 (or $30, whichever it is) to use the feature. Can anyone confirm please?
It does work

1. Enable Airplane mode
2. Enable Wifi, and obviously connect to a wifi network
3. Search Market for PDANet (which is free)
4. Download
5. ????
6. Profit!
I have tethered via USB. you need the generic Samsung drivers Not the att captivate driver. Then Just enable pc connexrion in USB settings and your pc sees the phone as a network adapter.
NO Root required.

You can also do ad-hoc tethering.

Sorry, didn't know the details, was trying to be funny. Listen to these other guys, but that is how you can install pda net on an unrooted phone.

Thanks all. The feature was one of the deciding factors for me to get the phone. Appreciate it
Tethering
I can personally attest to the fact that the Captivate WILL tether straight out of the box with NO third party app needed if you get the right USB drivers installed and just select PC Internet when you plug in the USB.. Wifi tether is a bit more touchy though..

I've seen a lot of folks refer to the generic Samsung drivers, but I can't seem to find a link to them anywhere.
Anybody have a link to where I can get them?
Anyone have some details on which drivers work for tethering? I am using the ones off Samsung's site and its telling me that it cannot start up the modem, perhaps im using the wrong drivers.
Thanks for the help
I installed the drivers from here, 64 bit in my case.
Changed USB setting on my phone to "PC Internet".
Plugged in my phone.
Waited for my laptop to setup the ethernet connection (Windows 7).
Disconnected from Wifi on my laptop for testing purposes.
Voila, submitted this post via USB tether to my phone.

Drivers posted on Samsung US site does not contain network driver for tethering (no supprise there). AndroidForums.com Captivate forum has a sticky to download drivers that do include tethering.
If you don't feel comfortable going that way, you can download Kies from Samsung UK or any other non-US site. Kies has the proper driver included in the installation. If you don't like to use Kies, you can uninstall it and the driver will stay.
I ended up with Kies, The network device connects but I cannot reach open internet. Any thoughts?

It depends how you connect your phone. If you select USB mdoe to 'Kies' mode, you will have to use modem tethering inside the Kies application on your PC to connect. Otherwise, you need to set your phone to 'PC Internet' mode and your PC should be able to connect to internet once plugged in. No Kies needed in this mode.
Personally I don't see much value of the Kies (I can use WMP to do all the media transferring). Hence I uninstalled Kies and left the network driver alone.
This is while its set to PC Internet.
it just randomly started to work, hell I wont complain lol

I am looking for a tweak\tool\registry hack (if possible) to have a Charge Only Mode for Windows Mobile 6.5 if at all it is possible. Most of the times, I am at office using my HD2 (Dual boot with 6.5 and DarkStone Android ) connected to the Laptop and it would be great if I can just connect it to my laptop without choosing either of the three options
1. ActiveSync
2. USB Storage Mode
3. Internet Sharing
P.S : I did lot of search for this option but was unable to find it and hence started this thread...but I will be more than happy if anyone can redirect me to an existing thread if any, for the same issue.
When your phone is charging off the laptop do you actually use any apps on it?
I'm like you in that I spend 2 days a week with my phone charging from the laptop, but I never use it for anything other than phone calls, so selecting disk drive does the job for me.
Any apps I'd need, I'd make sure were installed on the device.

Better use the active sync or the mass storage mode..As it is you wont be needing to install apps on your memory card thanks to the massive storage of the HD2 compared to the older WM devices...This shouldn't be a problem IMHO...
Cheers.
Ive got a really easy fix for this, just use a different cable, you can get cables or adaptors that will charge only and wont sync. When you want to sync just change the cable or take off the adaptor.
btw... such an adaptor is only £2.50 from amazon for my phone

This doesn't stop the action as such, but when you connect your phone to PC, with the 3 options you listed, there should be a a check box at the bottom "Don't ask me again", so whatever you choose will automatically happen next time (choosing USB storage will therefore not ativate ActiveSync/Device Centre on your PC. This can also be found under Settings->Other (miscellaneous settings)->USB to PC (see attachment).
Or, just use a wall socket charger?
Hi,
Thanks for your replies ! The reason I asked this question is because I do not have a Data Plan on Phone. I only use Wifi at home and office and Active Sync kills it. Data storage mode won't let me use the Storage which I kinda need (Don't ask me why? ) and ofcourse Internet sharing Mode just sends the phone into a crazy 'Connecting 3G Network'...loop.
Anyways, I think using the Charge Only Cable should do the trick for now..But I still feel that this mode will be helpful for few rares like me...Love tis mode in Android.

ActiveSync does not kill my Wifi - make sure the 'Allow wireless connections on device...' is checked under File->Connections Settings. Also ActiveSync should allow your phone to use your PC's internet connection (pass through) anyway.
The other thing to try is to delete the mobile device from within ActiveSsync as if you've never synced it before and when you next connect it it will ask you to set up a relationship but click cancel and - viola - should now just charge.

No "Allow Wireless Connection on Device" option. I am using Windows 7.. Not sure if it is present in WMDC.
ActiveSync Passthrough does not work..I am on a encrypted network with authentication based Proxies..whole bunch of them.....
I do not want to kill the ActiveSync relationship since it syncs everything with my PC.
I think I am bothering a lot over this stupid requirement.. so I will just close this thread (If I can) but if I find anything I will post it here, for someone else who might be in similar situation.
Thanks anyways...XDA rocks !!!

Turn your data off and turn on your WiFi, connect to the desired network and try to tether via usb to your phone. This should hopefully bridge your connection if you have an aosp ROM. I'm not sure about sense, as I've never tried it on a sense ROM before.

He meant to say, connect to wifi and in settings there will be an option to tether via usb
Although i am also not sure about sense roms
Or you can use a market app
There are many, Easy Tether will do the job
Connect to the wifi network and then use usb tethering
okay well I have a droid 3 so there aren't any roms out for it and when I try a wifi tether app from the market it disables your wifi

Okay, so basically what you're going to be doing is using your phone as a USB WiFi dongle. To do this, follow these instructions VERY carefully.
1) Assuming that you are already rooted (via z4root, Gingerbreak, or some other means), search for "EasyTether Lite" on the Android Market and download it.
2) Go into Settings>Wireless & Networks
3) Uncheck the box that says "Mobile Network", "3G", "Mobile Data" or something along those lines.
4) Check the box that says "WiFi" and connect to the desired network.
5) Now, download and install the drivers you need for EasyTether to work with your computer here (note that you are going to do this from your computer and not your phone): http://www.mobile-stream.com/easytether/drivers.html
6) Connect your phone to your computer via USB cable and open the EasyTether app. Enable tethering and with a little bit of magic and fairy dust, you should now have a connection on your computer.
Good luck mate.
Need for same
Need an expert here!
what we look for is using android phone to connect other devices not only to internet but also to each other .
We could do it with our modem, but with tethering is like a hotspot , every device can connect internet but cannot see other devices.
Everywhere i looked was explainin "how to tether" which is built in android 2.2 already.
Helps will be highly appreciated
Is it too simple?
I had trouble getting USB tethering on my macbook, not my PC, but:
I searched the market for USB tethering.
and with "Easy Tether lite" (the first app in the search results; there are other options, I tried this one first and it worked great).
I installed on my phone, ran it, followed the wizard, had to install USB tethering drivers for OS X at some point.
Now:
Phone getting WiFi from my router and entering my computer via usb.
I even set it up now to send this very post!!
cheers,
-nerB
EDIT: (Hmm, your syntax is kind of shaky, original poster... You don't mean use the computer as a wireless adapter for your phone do you?? that would be internet pass-through, yes? I think you do mean USB tethering but using a WiFi source, not the mobile connection. Is this as simple as hooking up a usb data tether but using the WiFi instead of 3G from your phone, such as to use a dingy laptop without wireless to get the WiFi in a Starbucks/etc/etc? Hmm.
Otherwise, your phone is not a WiFi wireless adapter, it has one that your phone OS connects to, which then "usb tethers" to computer...
I've never even seen a usb cable that connects a mobile phone to a mobile phone. Haha. I suppose if you had one, you should be able to USB tether from one phone and Internet Pass-Through on the other.....:/ )
Check out this thing called Bluetooth for that. It works wonders.

solution without additional software while having cyanogenmod
This works with cyanogenmod10 out of the box. Probably also possible with cm7/cm9 too.
Connect phone via cable to pc, connect phone to wifi, enable "USB-Tethering" (Settings -> Tethering/Hotspot), let OS detect the new device, done.
I know this thread has no activity since over a year, but if anybody finds this page like me while searching for this topic, I could be helpful for him knowing a method without using additional software while having cyanogenmod.

Just some questions...
OK GUYS. thnx for the usefull info.
Now i wanna say that suppose we have this wifi dongle for connecting to computer..(see photo attached) we use this for connecting WIFI to our PC's. RIGHT???
NOW i wanna ask if it is possible that we can use our phone instead of this ""DONGLE"" as wifi signal catcher. NEITHER USB NOR WIFI TETHERING(like easy tether lite or many other options available on XDA.) [people are actually asking for "THIS OPTION" so we don't have to spend another 20-30 bucks but they ends up with USB or WIFI tether)
we connect our phone to PC and Search for WIFI Signals on PC... NOT on the phone itself.
please guys, if any one know how to do this then please share. OR please tell if it is possible or not..
thnx...

thank you a million times man
I actually just tried the above program and it works. It has serious limitations if your not getting the paid version. Blocks a bunch of webs sites and all secure ones. It does work though. I really wish Verizon would not have found it necessary to remove wifi sharing over USB for some dam reason. The S7 I have, had it factory and they removed it. Not sure why? Seeing how it does not have a fuking thing to do with the mobile network. I can actual tether my computer by USB using mobile network and can't from my wifi. Can already bypass they're tethering fee.
I will continue reading and searching till I find a way to undo or work around big reds unnecessary removal of this feature. Even if it involves crawling a 1000 miles on my hands and knees, on broken glass to find some big wig and beating the reversal out of him with the very S7 I'm typing this on.
I have the Samsung Kies application installed on my Win7 x64 laptop. Using USB works fine, but Ive been trying to get the WiFi sync option working and I can never get the Laptop running Kies to see any of my 3 Samsung Galaxy S2s (two skyrockets and one T989).
I followed the guide to make sure I setup network discovery, enabled the right services, etc.
However what do I have to do on the phone to make it "activate" or anything to show up on the laptop? What am I missing?
Again this is Kies over Wifi, Im not talking about using Kies Air application on the phone and going to the URL the phone shows, that works just fine.
I saw a few guides searching on Google, but problem is they all seem to show this option of "Kies via Wifi" under the Network/Wireless menu, I have nothing like thatin all 3 of my phones which are 2.3.6, or 4.0.3 or even the 4.0.4.

You dont need to run a program on your PC. Turn on your wifi on your phone and run kies air. When it starts it will give you the IP address of your phone. Open up your browser on your computer and type "IPADDRESS:8080"
8080 stands for the port number. or it may be 80 but im sure its 8080.
Theres a program on the market that does the exact same thing. WiFi explorer im thinking is the name.

Yea Im familiar with that, my 2nd to last paragraph mentioned that I have no problem with Kies Air.
But I was just trying to figure out how to get Kies to sync via Wifi as it claims it can directly with the phone. But i can never get it to work. Thats what Im talking about. Kies Air is different and like I said works fine, but Im talking about the Desktop thick client application that is called Kies and supposedly connects via wifi to the phone and allows it to sync wirelessly like the iPhones can now do.
Dixit
Forgot to mention that your computer and your phone MUST be connected to the same network. You can even activate wifi tether on your phone and connect that way.
I have the same problem. Want to use wi-fi connection to sync my Samsung Galaxy Y Duos via Kies via Wi-Fi automatically. The problem is that I can't connect my phone to Kies via Wi-Fi. Via USB it works fine, but I want it via Wi-Fi.
It looks like my Win 7 haven't accepted the driver for the phone form Kies at a time of Kies installation.
Have any one solved this issue?
Hi..
I recently bought samsung galaxy s2 and have a few doubts regarding a few features..
The situation is something like this-
My phone is connected to the internet via wifi..
Phone is connected to laptop via usb cable..
And i want to access the internet on my laptop is it possible??
The issue here is -
My laptop (lenovo R60, 2006 make, Win XP) network card seems to be incompatible with the high speed modems.
As when i hover over the network icon in the tool tray it shows 54Mbps and the wifi in the phone is shown as 65 Mbps..
So i suppose this is the problem with the NIC card for the laptop.. Am i right in assuming this?
Please help me resolve this issue..
Sure, use usb tether app. it does 3g, not sure about wifi, but worth a try: https://play.google.com/store/apps/..._apps#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEwOSwiY29tLnBkYW5ldCJd
try it with kies
it should let you do that
I just make sure only WIFI data is enabled from the drop menu, and then settings-wireless-tethering then check the USB tethering option
I have tried USB tethering its giving problem with the config file given there for Win XP..
While installing the new hardware using the new hardware wizard it is unable to find the config file downloaded onto the desktop itself..
Tried downloading the PC studio 3.2.2 for samsung and using the network wizard there.. But that too wasnt connecting .. Gives me an option of only removing some connections , which are not there in the first place..
Is there any other alternative for that config file available?
And will switching off mobile data enable usage over wifi on its own? I need it to be wifi only as i do not have any data plans for 3g enabled on my phone..
Thanks a lot.. That USB tether app works.. :good:
And it connects via wifi of phone as well..:victory:
Found that my rooted gs2 phone works fine for usb tether with the juggernaut ROM installed. unfortunately I couldn't tether with the phone connected to the WiFi. I will have to remember that app on the market if the need arises.

I first tried slickmod 3.6, tried a bunch of other roms afterwrads, but none of them as easy to use and i love the look of it.
You could try this if you don't want an app filled with permissions / ram usage that can be fixed rather easily
[just a question do you have any of the 3 Kies processes running: kies, tray agent, KiesPDLR.exe in task manager while trying to use your phone as a wifi usb?]
Im running slickmod3.6 and all i need to do is enable wifi only from the awsome looking drop menu and then settings tick usb tether and i get my wifi data speed/limit Im pretty sure I tried that with stock Telstra firmware and did not work. Why would i want a permission hungy app for if it's not needed, it has a very modded look to it its great, plus i added some xtras.
Just a thought try uninstall the drivers, download kies (Set all 3 kies processes to not start at boot, msconfig should do it). Only use it when you need to. let it update the drivers (note the new version n.o drivers for future ref) If that dont work uninstall the driver again, and then click scan for hardware changes, let windows update find it.
Failing that, I have quite a few driver packages I have collected with the odin setup zip that I can host on my skydrive just pm me.
Also when uninstalling drivers, and you run into problems delete the ghosted drivers as well, by default you wont see them.
