This is a more general newbie question:
In order to get the perfect GPS-signal, I have installed a variety of custom ROMs, I have flashed various radios, edited /etc/gps.conf, wiped (and restored) efs-data. I am on most recent MIUI Rom (from miui-germany). All these actions didn't really help, gps is worse than ever, and I am now kind of tired. Now my question:
There are ways of reflashing stock rom and hboot with s-on. Will I get the original system back? Will I get delivery-Status back, including original radio, EFS, Boot etc? It seems to me that there are parts of the system that are not affected when ROMs are flashed etc.
I assume you got s off using rev?
Flash a eng hboot then flash a RUU of your choice.
will this work if i unlocked the bootloader with the info from htcdev??

Yes, I am s off, and currently HBOOT shows up as 6.98.102.
Still not completely clear: will everything be "reseted", including kernel & radio & restore original efs-data? (I am still wondering about my courage trying to wipe efs data...) These were the parts that (I thinkt) stayed untouched when I was flashing a rom.

After flashing the RUU your phone will be completely stock.

This seems like a simple and silly question to ask but... Do you use a case with your Desire? I read reviews of some that actually had adverse affects on GPS signal, commonly the cheap ones!

I am very much interested in ICS ROM, but one basic question:
If the Radio is not good for my region, esp. the voice clarity thing, and I wish to revert back to the GB ROM with the current RADIO which is on my sensation....would the Nandroid thing work on it???? Or anyway to download the radio which is currently there in my sensation...if yes, How do i find out the Radio for my sensation??
Someone please guide me...
I was flashing ICS ROM yestarday, but things didn't go right. Restored NAND and everything is working, and i still have back my old radio.
I have seen a few reports of going back to a GB ROM over in the InsertCoin thread, so it would seem like reverting back would be an option. It would also depend on whether or not you did the full process of upgrading to an ICS ROM including updating the firmware, because I believe 4.0.1 can be run on the original firmware but 4.0.3 you must update it. According to what I have seen regarding InsertCoin anyways.
Also, I want to say that you can find your radio information if you boot into hboot. (Take battery out, hold VOL down and power). Not 100% sure though, I usually just use it to hop into recovery.
Hope I helped
I flip flopped a couple times now, just make sure u reflash gb firmware if u upgraded for ics, and always use the radio reccomended with the rom. I've had no issues.
Here's my last 4 roms, in case anyone cares.

I am currently running android revolution 5.0.2 without updating my radio or firmware and it is running very well. If I want arhd 6.0.2 then I would need to install new firmware. So far I am keeping my option to return to gingerbread without any hassle.
Flashing a rom or backup doesnt change your radio. You have to go through your bootloader for that. I havent heard any bad news about going back to GB as long as older 10.xx radios are flashed as well. And people have actually gone back succesfully while keeping newer firmware and hboot. And by people i mean me lol. I have a insertcoin GB 3.4.5 backup on tap i use regularly cuz we all know ICS is still learning how to walk on our sensations

Did you flash the radio separately? I am having the problem now as I did a NAND restore to GB, but the radio is still 11.xx...I think the battery is draining more with it. So I want to revert the radio back...but how did you do that? Just flash the radio? I flashed the recent firmware from December in HBOOT and even though it says the custom radio was flashed, the radio still says 11.xx
please let me know

You can flash a radio through hboot screen just like you did with ICS firmware. Im not sure but i dont think the firmware zip from the dec tmo ota had radio included as all radios are rolled up in a thread in the dev section. Theres a radio flashing guide somwhere too

Would like to know who has the firmware to go back go GB? Because the nand backup isn't working.....

Hi, would appreciate some input as I'm pretty new with this.
I recently tried the ics Rom but didn't like it, so I reverted back to my 2.3.4 stock but now it seems the battery is running down very quickly. Could this b related to the firmware flashed for the ics?
I noticed hboot is now 1.23 and radio is 11.19.....even I did a wipe and restore the Nand I created b4 the firmware upgrade. So I guess restoring NAND doesn't include the firmware?
So I m wondering how would I go.about goin back to where it was b4...is the battery affected by the firmware?
Thx

Generally when you flash any new ROM you should give it 2 full charge cycles before evaluating the battery usage. It has something to do with the "battery stats" needing to recalibrate.
However, I guess it could have something to do with flashing the new firmware. I would recommend though giving it some time and seeing if it levels out in a day or two. If it doesn't, then you know there may be some other issue.
Battery drain is one of those tricky subjects, cause any amount of apps can make a huge difference as well. There is a lot of general variance...
Anyways.
Hope I helped
It can also be attributed to GB roms having certain RIL files pertaining to 10.x radios. The ICS radio is 11.x, and no GB roms have RIL files for 11.x radios. That being said - if RIL files don't match the radio in question, battery life and performance can be bad.
I do believe you can keep the hboot 1.23 but you need to down grade that radio back to 10.56 or 10.59. The RIL file should be in ur nandroid backup for the older radio already so in theory that + 2 battery cycles and you should be good again. Theres a radio thread over in the development section. Install old radio and like mommy used to say 'dont forget to wipe' before a fresh restore. G'luck

Thx for the input. I do think it's related to the firmware update I flashed when trying to do the ICS. I've done a few cycles and the battery is still bad. I flashed the older firmware file (the one from the extracted dec tmous update), but it didn't change radio back and HBOOT is still 1.23. Guess I can try to just flash the radio.
If I run the RUU file, it will reset everything is that right? I'll lose root too? How about S-off and CW? And after installing RUU, can I do OTA update given the RUU file available is a lower software version.
Appreciate the clarification
Theres a radio flashing guide somewhere where you can download just the radio and flash it without losing root or rom data if done right. The firmare you flashed was taken out of the ICS RUUs just like the radios are taken out for flashing purposes. And so are flashed through the bootloader just like you did with firmware.
That old dec tmo firmware we had flashed didnt include a radio i think the packager left it out. All i think you did was redo the nand partitions back to the last GB setup so no harm there.
An RUU is a full package install. Partitions, hboot, recovery, radio, rom, the works. Everything we are talkin about here are just pieces of an RUU. So root and s-off should still be there unless u flash a whole RUU.
baatery
the first time I've flashed it was horrible, run out after not much usage in one day.
flashed oneics, and now hd 6.0.2 and it is looking good...
Basically, the GPS on my Sensation wont find any satellites. I tried OpenSensation and ARHD and the GPS doesn't work on either. I read on Google that someone flashed the appropriate RUU for them and reflashed their custom ROM and the GPS started working again. I was going to do the same but was wondering if I flash the T-Mo ICS RUU, will it lock the bootloader? If so, how would I unlock it again? Also, if anyone has any tips to fix the GPS, any help is appreciated.

RUUs are ideally last choices.
Also, I'm assuming you are HTC Dev unlocked (you need to confirm this), if yes, then did you enable smart flash in 4ext recovery before flashing or flash the boot.img manually?
Try performing a full wipe/format before installing the ROM.
If you are S Off, then try installing 3.32 base firmware
If all of the above fail, use my guide to find & flash the correct RUU: www.tinyurl.com/RUUGuide
I am unlocked through revolutionary, I don't know if that is HTC-Dev, but I doubt it. I don't know about smart flash either, what is it? I full wiped and installed 5 different OpenSensation builds and the T-Mo ARHD version with no GPS on either. I also flashed the 3.32 firmware from the official ICS T-Mo firmware. Radio's too, went from 11.69 to 11.72. I want to flash the RUU to reset all the radios, firmware and such. But I am worried the bootloader will get locked down again.
My plan is to flash the RUU, test the GPS, then restore my clockwork backup of my current ROM and go from there. Would it be easier to just flash a Gingerbread RUU?

Here's what happens after flashing the RUU:
You will lose all data (except data on SD Card)
Your bootloader will be locked, but if you're S Off, you will remain S Off (You can get back to Revolutionary bootloader by flashing 3.32 base firmware from firmware thread.)
You will lose custom recovery if custom recovery is installed (this can be re flashed if you are S Off )
You will lose root if you are rooted. (this can be re done)
I recommend you flash the normal 3.32 base firmware from the firmware thread before flashing RUU.
i used to have the same issue as yours...
i tried this fix ..it works for sensation too
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=12764930&postcount=1
i used method 2 to do that ..method 1 failed for me
but be careful when using dd commands..you need to be extremely careful while typing that
also the fix..messes up your splash screen ..but you can easily flash the splash screen again
I tried the wiping thing, but it didn't work, I'm going to flash the RUU. If it doesn't work, it's borked, I guess.
Nothing, I flashed a Gingerbread RUU and the ICS RUU with no change. I am going to take it to T-Mobile in a few days. Any final, shot in the dark, tips?

Yes. Open up the back cover & check if all antennae are making contact. If not, apply aluminium foil. Take a strip, fold it till it's the right size, but ensure it isn't very thick, just a little more than enough to make contact & not tear.
First of all, Hello.
I don't want to make another GPS topic, so i write it down here. The thing is that i bought a used HTC Sensation XE and everything is working great except the GPS. I have read all the sensation threads about fixing the problems with GPS and i think i tried most of them without any luck.
I installed the free GPS apps from Market (GPS Status, GPS Test and the fix named FasterFix). It just won't find any satellites and that's it.
It wont lock on nothing and it wont find nothing.
* At the beginning when i started FasterFix it showed that the conf. is set to America. I live in Europe. So that really made sense, that if i change it to Europe, then it should work because the conf. is just wrong.
I have tried all kinds of fixes (FasterFix, modifying the gps.conf file), tried the Sensation topic named AGPS patch and flashed the gps fix .zip.
Tried all kinds of gps.conf files and putting the right server names in there Europe, Estonia. Tried the wipe and format and reinstalling Locations.
I didnt want to root the phone and use custom ROM, but nothing seemes to help fixing the GPS problem, so in last option i rooted phone, did the S-OFF and all the stuff so its unlocked and tried custom ROM.s. I was fingers crossed and hoped that the ROM change will magically fix my whatever errors with GPS but nothing. I tried :
* [ROM][Sense 4.1][20.01] Team Venom presents: ViperS 1.6.3
* [ROM][CM10][Kang][Pyramid][4.1.2][09 JAN]
Yesterday after i did full wipe and tried the vision wipe fix (Method 1) + Reinstalling Locations. I went outside and started up the GPS, i used AGPS fix configuration file. So i started GPS Status and waited for ~30sec. it magically found 5 sats and after waiting couple minutes or so, it finally locked up and managed to get the right position. I was so happy and thought that i finally fixed it after tried everything in 2 days. So later on that day i went driving with my car and wanted to test the GPS in real. I fired the sucker up and NOTHING. No sats, nothing. And here i am, again searching for help.
I really like this phone and i need to get that god damn GPS working. Please any help is welcome. What else can i try?
Can it really be the GPS unit itself what is defective? Well it found sats and locked up on them yesterday, so i think something has to work but there is some error somewhere.
------------------------------------------------
EDIT:
OOh my god! I managed to FIX my problem! What a relief and of course im telling you how.
My problem was that antenna contacts didn't give a good connection between the housing. I played with the housing and watched the GPS Test software, so if the connection was OK, it automatically detected sats and if i moved the housing again, they disappeared.
I tried the aluminium foil trick and it helped but i didnt much like the idea of some loose foil inside of my phones housing. So i checked up the antenna contacts and tried to figure out what the heck was the problem, because if there was a cap between the housing and phone itself, there was a signal and as soon as i locked the housing to the phone - Baah! nothing, the signal was gone. I opened the housing and took a scalpel. Next i really carefully bended the antenna contacts, so if first they were shaped like "/\" then after the bend they looked like " L ", with that trick applied they now get a good contact with the housing and the GPS is working as it should.
I hope it will help someone, who might have the same problem. The phone is Sensation XE with beats audio.
The easy was is to first try the foil trick, if it helps then you know it's the contacts.
The GPS antenna contacts are located between the camera lens and the battery. At least these contacts worked for me, after the bend.
This is my first Samsung phone - had an HTC incredible, then a motorola bionic. I'm a veteran regarding flashing, rooting, etc - but, as many of you know, each device has it's own nomenclature and quirks - so, I'm getting my feet wet. I familiarized myself but had a couple more questions.
I followed this thread first:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1974114
Decided to install latest leaked image - then rooted and unlocked and flashed TWRP. No issues, works great. This had me on VRBMA2.
I got squirrley for a new experience - only took me maybe 24 hours - so, decided to flash a ROM or two. Stuck with stock ROMs based off VRBLK3, CleanROM and Synergy. Both flashed fine, no big issues. I did note however that baseband still read VRBMA2. Because I've had the Bionic for so long with it's *$*%*$* locked bootloader, the idea of flashing custom kernel's and radios is foreign to me. I PRESUME, the baseband is the radio, but I don't know. I realized it was probably ideal to have the VRBLK3 baseband, but, since it was still JB, figured SHOULD be ok. Which it was in general, but, I wasn't sure - so I went back to stock via openyoureyes thread above.
So
1. Can someone clarify the importance of matching the baseband with what the ROM is based off of? How does this relate to non-stock ROMs? i.e. AOSP, AOKP, CM. I'm 99 % sure I've read that the ROM does not modify the baseband or the kernel.
(( 2. openyoureyes files do not modify data (I presume he means data folder with system apps). If I wanted to go back to square one - I presume the image files that he has 'hidden' and warns about using are the original image files to flash via ODIN if I want stock stock. (analagous to an SBF or FXZ file in a motorola device. He just has such serious warnings I wanted to be sure.
** Answered question 2 myself via here -- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1762709 section 5 *** ))
Thanks in advance. I love this phone and am having fun learning another device.

Welcome to the SGS3 :good:
1. Yes, baseband = radio. Any baseband can go with any rom (AOSP or TW). They are separate and not interrelated. I tend to keep mine flashed to the current newest, but use whichever one gives you best reception in your area. It's very subjective and what works for me may not be what works best for you. Flash away
2. The data he talks about is the /data/app folder (all the user apps you have installed from the Play store or otherwise) and the /data/media folder (your internal SD card). All the system apps (camera, contacts, email, phone, etc) are in the /system/app folder, which is part of the /system partition that gets overwritten when you flash the images in his thread. To go back to stock stock, as you put it (stock recovery, unrooted, locked bootloader), look at Section 5 in the OP here.
The difference between the openyoureyes files and the ones in droidstyle's is that droidstyles wipes your internal SD (you lose everything on the internal sd - it doesn't touch the external sd) and openyoureyes does not wipe the internal.
Hope that helps.

Welcome aboard!
Basically there isn't any importance with matching your baseband with your rom. Just use whichever you think improves your signal the best. Fyi, you may see these terms thrown around a lot so to clarify: baseband = radio = modem. Your baseband is not flashed when you flash custom roms which is why you saw it stay the same. It will change if you Odin flash a stock rom.

What you'll want to look out for is whether the stock rom tar will format /sdcard. Open1your1eyes0 has hidden those in his thread I believe. At this point, each of the primary threads that contain Odin specific stock tar detail whether flashing them wipes /sdcard or not. With /sdcard being your internal storage, most user data is stored at /sdcard/data. You're external sd card will not be wiped when using a full wipe Odin tar.
Also, anything ending in ".tar" or ".tar.md5" is flashed only with Odin.

What is the process for restoring the stock ROM? I did a backup of my ROM using CWM before installing Cyanogen. Everything is running fine (with Cyanogen), but now that I've seen how easy it is to install custom ROMs, now I want to bounce around and compare different things. To restore my stock ROM, is it literally just a simple case of doing a wipe/factory-reset, using CWM to restore, and then rebooting? That's it?
Or is there more to it?

That will restore the stock rom.
But NOT recovery and other extra partitions e.g. radio
The official way to set your phone back to full stock is to run a RUU (Rom Update Utility)
Ah. Ok. Thanks. I'm not familiar with running the RUU process. I'll search the threads and read up on it. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

RUUs for the most models can be found HERE
The RUUs are self-explanatory
The RUU must match your "MID" (model ID) + "CID" (carrier ID)
If your phone is "S-ON" you can only use RUUs that are the same date or newer than the firmware actually installed on your phone.
If your phone is "S-OFF" you can flash any RUU / RADIO / HBOOT version you like as long its compatible with your device
+ if you phone is "S-OFF" you can change the phone's CID. E.g. for flashing a unbranded firmware on a phone that was sold as a carrier branded device
Before I run a RUU and go back to stock... it occured to me that when I put CM 10.2 on this phone, all I did was unlock the phone, install CWM, and then install the -ville zip file for CM10. That's it. Are there other steps that I should have taken? Should I have flashed the radio? I'm on T-Mobile, and I didn't install (or even see) a T-Mobile-specific version of CM10 to install on the HTC One S. The whole issue that I'm having is that I can't seem to maintain a steady data connection. My connection keeps changing modes, and disconnecting me every time it does. I'd hate to give up CM10, if it is just a simple case of needing to flash the radio or something. Or do I need to change/update the APN for T-Mobile?
TIA

I'm on T-Mobile, and I didn't install (or even see) a T-Mobile-specific version of CM10 to install on the HTC One S. The whole issue that I'm having is that I can't seem to maintain a steady data connection. My connection keeps changing modes, and disconnecting me every time it does. I'd hate to give up CM10, if it is just a simple case of needing to flash the radio or something. Or do I need to change/update the APN for T-Mobile?
TIA

Flashing another radio version may help or may not help. I'm not on T-Mobile, so I have no experience which radio offers the best reception. Have you tried another rom yet to check if you get a more constant data connection?
